I picked one up a couple weeks ago from sainsburys harrogate. £4reduced to clear

I never understood how someone can tell if it's national or not.. I shop maybe 1-2 a week but not usually venture out to a neighbouring supermarket of same company..

Anyway, to answer your question no idea but I saw 8-10 in Burpham, Guildford.

At least 3 left in Enfield at this price a couple of days ago too.
Good: Batteries included; numbers on display are permanently lit so very easy to read.
Bad: The plastics feel flimsy; only electronic switch-off (not physical switch) so I'll have to remove the batteries if I'm not using it often.

Thanks, I know about the electronic switch-off system (aka soft-off). The problem is some of that circuitry will always have to stay powered up, constantly checking whether the "on" button has been pressed, which over some months will drain the batteries even if you never switch it on. Physical (sliding/toggle) switches are preferred because they disconnect the batteries from the electronics, which is equivalent to removing the batteries completely and thus waste no extra power so the batteries could easily last for years. Also worth noting that the included batteries are cheapo zinc type, which are prone to leaking once they are drained. Just something to be aware of. Deal is easily hot at this price.

Hmm interesting, did not know about zinc and leaking. What about alkaline?

I suppose you can stick a cut up business card in between the battery should you not looking to use the scale for a long period. The Mrs bakes every so often so for us it is not ness.

Alkalines also can leak when they get flat. However, they don't self-discharge much and they hold many times more power to start with anyway e.g. they come with a 4yr "Best Before" date and could still be fine in say a remote control for a couple more years after that.

On the other hand zinc batteries always discharge slightly even when unused. The outer metal tube is made of zinc and as they go flat they eat through it; this is how they are designed. Cheap cells tend to have thinner zinc, almost guaranteeing leakage if left too long.

I wouldn't stress if you're using a device frequently, since you'll notice the batteries being flat before there's much risk. It's only really devices where you might not notice they are flat for some time e.g. the dancing Santa toy that mercifully only comes out at Xmas. In my case these scales will probably only be used 2-3 times a year, so deffo want batteries out while stored.
