Thanks for this. I have been tempted for a while. I am not musical at all but starting "youtube" learning and got the basics - wonderwall (default beginner song is it?!)
I can read very basic tabs.
I just want to play pearl jam - Alive!!

Anyone know where is best to get a cheap real tone cable from? Remember looking last year and they were pretty expensive/hard to find.

I bought it with the game from CEX and then immediately traded in the game because it was cheaper than just buying the cable on its own (and still is if you buy the PS3 version for £20)
This was a year ago though when the trade in for rocksmith was worth doing (it's about £1 now!)
But still the cheapest way to get the cable I think as they're £25 on their own on amazon.

I like it, but I can already play guitar. It's a fun way to get in some extra practice though as I find it boring to just pick up and play without backing etc....
There are built in lessons which are pretty good - and if you 'flip' the tab in the settings you will learn to read tab which is useful for reading any other song using the internet. I don't know why it doesn't automatically start off flipped.
DLC is slightly overpriced but if you can get deals on credit then it's not so bad.
There is a sizeable unnofficial DLC too - but may be difficult for beginners

just in case anyone doesn't understand how this game works:
* you need a real electric guitar to play
* you also need a 'realtone' cable to play, which will cost you £25

The good news is that the realtone cable is good if you own a cable from any other version on any other platform.
So my Xbox 360 cable from the original Rocksmith is still good to go with this Steam/PC version of the software, for example.

hmmmm tempted
got this and a guitar for christmas for the 360 a few months before buying an XB1...played it probably 4 times.
might get more of a chance to play it on pc
although the guitar has made a nice decoration next to the fireplace for the last 6 months.

The solo in Alive was the first "proper" solo I learned to play all the way through back in the day :smiley: At family occasions, my parents used to make me sit and play it to everyone :/ Sat in my ripped jeans, flannel shirt and long bleached blonde hair. No wonder my cousins didn't speak to me for years after.

Would recommend! I don't know how well this teaches you to remember the songs, but it definitely improves technique and is well fun.

Been tempted with this for awhile,
Learning basic tabs at the moment and tried things like jamplay to learn.
Problem is online video lessons assume your at the same level, most of them are very similar and give no real feedback, I quickly get frustrated and bored (YouTube being the exception as you can find a song you like and get step by step instructions of how to play it, although some are too advanced).
Can anyone recommend this to a beginner such as myself?
Also someone mentioned a no cable patch, any more info? Can I just use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable and plug it into my pc? Where can I find out about it as ive searched myself and couldn't find it and I'm sure many others want to know.
To anyone else looking where to learn, ive found learning to read tabs and playing songs from video games is fun and easy, for example the song from Metal Gear Solid or Aeriths Theme from FF7, although this is about as far as I get (they are very basic but a good foot in the door and quick to pickup) Aeriths Theme Tab Metal Gear Tab How to read Tabs
Also search for family guy sons on youtube, they might be a bit silly but there fun and mostly easy.

Cant say I really approve as it adds all the DLC presumably for free hence I wont link it and am hesitant to recommend or even download it. Apparently you can use just a line input to your microphone jack or a sound card though.

Bargain , and a pretty decent way to learn the guitar through lead, rhythm or bass, ive been using it for well over a year now and, well im no Clapton but i can play well and confident enough to sit in the pub on the open mic nights with the others and strum/pick through a couple of dozen songs without needing the tab/notation.
A reasonable guitar is more of a priority here either Electric or Electro acoustic will work fine ( i use both ) and you can pick them up pretty cheaply if you look around, the only reason you want something relatively decent is the cheap nasty guitars generally have terrible action and thats not good for you fingers especially if you are just beginning, with that said go to one of the Cash for places and see what they have for sale, i grabbed a nice Yamaha from CC for £50 and its sweet.
The only downside for me was the cable , which thankfully is not included , i returned mine 4 or 5 times before i just put the replacement in the drawer and went online to find a work around, this may not be the best option for you and i am not condoning piracy but the cable IS a known problem and unless they have redesigned the whole cable then tbh fkem you end up paying for their cheap junk in return postage. as above there is a "patch" which works perfectly fine for whats needed, i dont notice any difference at all between the original cable and the alternative cable and patch, need help with that just ask.

Yes, absolutely. I've tried learning a couple of times in the past from DVDs, books etc, and always gave up. I would totally consider myself a beginner (can strum a few chords, thats literally all), bought this earlier this year and it got me far closer to playing actual songs than anything else (had two songs almost nailed on rhythm), and was a much more enjoyable way to learn. Don't get me wrong, it's not easy, you WILL find yourself doing well on a song only for the number/complexity of notes to increase and throw you completely, but stick at it, slow the track down for tricky parts, and play it or practice REGULARLY and you'll make solid progress :smiley: (the latter was where I failed - other things took priority and I stopped playing)
Oh and I had no issues whatsoever with the cable.

bought this mainly as a method to encourage my daughter to practice more but was having a go myself last night. It's pretty good at finding your level automatically and then pushing you. however I found that the way the 'tiles' visibly move towards you encourages me to be a bit early.

Also to anyone wanting to buy this without the cable, after a few hours trying last night, the patch didn't work for me (it did but the crackle made it unplayable, sounds smooth as a nut in audacity but on this it was a no go). I wouldn't bother buying this as the cable is around £25 separately and you can pick up the game and cable combo for £12 on ebay + no lengthy download.
Anyone feel free to correct me, I would love to be proven wrong as then I could actually play the game! Its also piracy as its a patch that bypasses steam, and no doubt most links will contain viruses.
