Popped into Morries to get some Pepsi Max. Big sign with £1 over the shelves with the 2l bottles. Bought 3 bottles and got £1 discount. Works out at 67p per 2l bottle.
Just checked their website and it is an offer. Ends 8th November, so keep voting hot 'til then!

Whilst acidic, these drinks will struggle to damage your teeth unless you keep a mouthful in your gob for a week. The actual concentration of acid is pretty low but yes moderation is of course advisable.
It's calorie free, slightly acidic carbonated flavoured water. There is nothing in it that warrants significant or specific health concerns particularly, as you have mentioned, in moderation.

I think your statement that cola is contributing to obesity is something you need to back up before telling people to drink water, after all pepsi has been around since 1898 so thats 117 years to be precise. We live in a world that's not good for us in some way or another!
I'm suprised noone has jumped in with how "aspartame is the devil poison and will burn your insides out" rubbish yet

Also your link is to mercola, possibly the worst source of information ever. It's full of misinformation and pills to buy.
yrreb88
15 Oct 151#74
Is that in a country where the only easily accessible drinking water is in the capital and where there are no proven health benefits as of yet? Sales have gone down yes but what's to stop people switching to other high calorie alternatives like fruit juice? People can simply buy cheaper brands.
It's a regressive tax and one that would only work, in terms of likely reduction in obesity rates, with significantly higher rates of tax.
yrreb88
15 Oct 15#75
Key words there being "large amounts". The key to obesity, and thus generally diabetes, is calories. You can have a sugar or even carb free diet but if you consume too many calories of fat and protein etc, you will gain weight.
"Reward centres"? If you're suggesting sugar is addictive then that is simply not true and it seems to me that people tend to confuse the pleasure of enjoying something with "addiction".
HFCS is banned in the EU? What on earth have you been reading? It's not at all. It tends to be called glucose-fructose syrup or isoglucose in the EU. Sugar is sugar, one form can't be worse than another whether in fruit, honey or HFCS.
yrreb88
15 Oct 15#76
In the USA it did to try to combat falling sales even though soda consumption has decreased overall there I think. The recipe hasn't changed here thankfully.

urbanlegend11

I understand what your saying but i really don't think they help dieters. In fact it adds to your cravings because your body is expecting high sugar calories and it gets nothing but gas and e numbers.
Cigarettes have been around since 1865 does that make them healthy?
Coca Cola and Pepsi are multi billion pound industries doing all they can to keep you addicted to sugared water. You don't really need hundreds of studies to understand that surely it cannot be good for your body ?
violentj
15 Oct 15#80
sorry but as soon as you read "new study found that drinking diet sodas is a direct cause of obesity in at least one special subset of Americans" you know it's not a balanced and unbiased study. whatever the experts claim from personal experience 2000-2500 calories a day and as much diet/zero drinks as I fancy and my weight has been steady for years now.

That Poundstretcher deal turned out to be in only one store, if you read through the comments. The Wilkos offer is a store specific clearance offer, only the Cherry Max version reduced in mine. So there really hasn't been a better offer nationwide on Pepsi than this in a long time.
yrreb88
15 Oct 151#85
Please try to critically analyse what you read. This limited study consisted of 749 senior citizens, only 474 made it to follow up. A correlation was found which would perhaps warrant further study because a correlation does not mean causation. Crucially, the study does not count any other form of nutrition i.e. calories. It is also one small study, you have to look at all of the available evidence before you even think about making a conclusion. Here is a meta-analysis that looks at 24 studies if you fancy a long read but it showed that using diet drinks in place of high calorie drinks resulted in weight loss. There is nothing in diet drinks to cause weight gain and there is little evidence to support it.
You can't be addicted to sugared water and you can't be addicted to calorie free, flavoured water. Nothing is good for your body in large quantities.
There are many multi-billion pound companies and they all want you to buy their stuff. More importantly, no one is forcing you to buy any products. For example, advertising has llittle influence on making people buy things unless it is for a brand new product.

yrreb88
15 Oct 15#92
Yeah ignore all my points and pick one you think you can tear apart. :stuck_out_tongue: Ask any economist, they will tell you the same thing. Advertising is to increase market share of a product group. If coke doesn't spend millions, then Pepsi would be the only brand with advertising and increase its market share enormously. Think about toothpaste, pet food and toilet paper, or even clothes why do adverts exist for those? You already use toilet paper (hopefully!) and toothpaste, the adverts aren't trying to get you to start using them, they're trying to get you to buy their brand and increase their market share.
Coke doesn't sponsor sporting events to get a healthy image, and I don't know who thinks that or what they say to show they have a healthy image, they just have banners, commercials etc. It's mainly because sporting events are watched by billions therefore they get the most bang for their advertising buck.
Coca cola life is an attempt at being "healthier" but only what consumers perceive as "healthier" i.e. Less natural sugar and natural sweeteners.

I personally haven't done any research (I'm not a scientist), but you are just turning your head if you want to pretend that the effects of acidic soft drinks are negligible to the human body.
The acid will not your teeth and along with the carbonation will contribute to cause reflux. Anecdotal evidence can tell you that. In fact there is absolutely no nutritional benefit to drinking diet soft drinks (even regular Coke or Pepsi is better for you in small quantities).
