I've owned the Yi Camera for a few months. I don't use it often, but I've used it for skateboarding clips, selfies, dog walks, swimming in the sea, and rock climbing to name a few.

The camera for the cost is amazing. I paid £60, but I did a lot of research into it before purchase. The out of focus people are saying in the earlier pages, this is usually due to the quick build, and that each lens is just slightly out of focus. A simple un-casing and adjusting the lens will fix the issue.

Water proof cases are cheap as hell. I bought a £10 case off eBay ( Here )
and the only issue I had it had fogged up due to the heat off the camera and the cold water off the sea in Brighton. One of these ( Here) had fixed the issue for my next trip to the sea at South End.

The camera has a standard tripod mount on the bottom, but a cheap housing will give you access to all the GoPro accessories.

My personal case on the Yi is one of these
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxMjAw/z/Q~cAAOSw9mFWHBv5/$_12.JPG
This is mainly because my original water proof case was locking out a lot of the outside sound and recording an odd squeek, so I would prefer the sound of a skateboards pop, compared to a compressed squeeking off the camera sliding about.

Here are a few videos, these are mainly testing the camera, and/or accessory.

A camera handle I've made for about £10.

My friend has a GoPro hero 4 white (Lcd screen), his sound quality from his device just does a lot better, and that's while inside of the housing. But for the price difference, I'd stick with my camera any day off the week. The specs are pretty close to each other. The only downside to the Yi is that there is a blue tooth controller but it's only for about 5 meters (roughly 3m in my testing). While the GoPro has the optional 50m-500m controller, which would useful in some situations.

jokes aside, micra will never be in the same level with Ferrari, however this little Yi is so good that I really do not see who and why would by the overoverpriced go (maybe because they call themselves goPRO?)

sounds mint. but what about the protective outer case that you get with gopro . they are waterproof too. I've hammered my gopro and fell off many times out on enduro MX bikes and the gopro really has taken some punishment. plus I know I can buy new outer lens thing on the outercase if/when it scratches after head butting the floor. I'm interested in this as it seems good. does it fit gopro case?

It will not fit gopro case - you need to buy case for that camera check gearbest they have few from cheap to original.

Sj4000 is not comparable to xiaomi yi.
Difference in picture quality is to big.
SJ5000+ that would be equivalent of yi camera.
How can I be sure - have both.

According to Techmoan, it's a very good camera, one of the best he's ever reviewed but don't forget that it doesn't have image stabilisation, so may not be ideal for some uses.

19 Oct 15 1 #11
If only that were true, I wouldn't hesitate to buy an alternative camera.

However GoPro really do have a niche market, there is very little choice between the top-end action camera's - the Hero 4 Black Edition wins it for me though and is not comparable to this.

You could argue this is much cheaper which is true, however you're suggesting that they product the same quality video recording which is completely false.

That aside, this camera is good value for money.

I watched some comparisons on YouTube and thought the sj4000 looked better. The yi looks out of focus and the sj4000 white balance is off.

I would agree , owning a sj4000 , it has a better picture , but the sky in daylight is a white blow out on the SJ4000, but doesn't cause a issue , unless you want to film birds or planes ?

I have both the Mobius and SJ4000 Wifi. For me personally the video quality on the Mobius is by far the best out of the £50-£100 range cameras atm! Just a shame you can't see what you're recording.

We are comparing here £200+ camera and £50. I don`t have any of GoPro cameras however if you do do pixel peeping I suppose GoPro isn`t good enough either. And in real life, it`s not the camera but person who uses it. Today I saw one gopro permanently attached in a car as dash camera. So yes in a way you are right, if you have enough cash to burn GoPro is the way forward.

Hold your horses, now you're comparing something else because you realize your original statement is false.

Here is your original quote
"however this little Yi is so good that I really do not see who and why would by the overoverpriced go"

I merely stated that they are not comparable in video quality, which they are not as the GoPro Hero 4 Silver and Black editions are much better therefore there still is a reason to purchase a GoPro.

Price is irrelevant under this comparison you have given because you merely stated the quality is the same, nothing related to the price, therefore you're basically admitting the GoPro is better and has a purpose even though it is priced much higher

Don't worry about replying, I am not arguing with you. I was just making a point that the GoPro has its purpose and can record better quality video so they are really not comparable, which is fine considering the GoPro is around four times as much.

I am not affiliated with them I just didn't want people to purchase this with the mindset that they are going to be able to record in the same quality as a GoPro Hero 4 could do. However, again, this is very good value for money.

Take this how you want. I ordered this a month ago from the uk warehouse it was posted fast tracking worked through oneworld express. It got as far as Yodel sorting office in Farnborough where it was stolen by the animals that work there. I also ordered 2 other items in this time one expensive one cheap. The expensive one was also stolen at yodel Farnborough. The cheap one was delivered from china by Yodel Obvs not worth stealing. I have done every thing gear best has asked waited the right amount of time etc. Now they are saying it has been delivered and I need to collect from my local post office. I can still track the delivery it stops at Farnborough. The price is good. I ordered another from Amazon arrived next day .The cam is good version 23L no sound or focus problems did firmware update all ok. 240 frames slow motion is fun. Full hd looks great on 50". Lots of setting to play with and you can load scripts from the sd card to do 2K video at 60 fps. Very happy with it and the kids are having fun to if they lose it buy another its not £400 of go pro. Just hope paypal will refund me for the items stolen by Yodels Farnborough employees because I don't think gear best will. One last point I took out insurance on the 2nd parcel oneworld informed me that no insurance had been taken out on that delivery.

Having already been raped for import duty on some branded contact lenses from HK (VAT + handling) this month by "BORDER FORCE" I'd be wary of ordering anything valuable from China.. from the EU warehouse I make this camera £50 +/- debit/credit card handling fees. I read that that UK's balance of trade is s**t, don't worry HM Customs can correct this by inspecting every package from China and taxing you accordingly.

Some of these have problems with the lens needing to be refocused but in terms of potential image quality they are easily as good as the 1080p gopro cameras, the firmware can be customised to deliver higher bitrates and unlock the 2.3k ability of the sensor, which is by the way, a Sony Exmor R with back side illumination (BSI) and far superior to pretty much any of this camera's contemporaries and the reason it punches above it's weight.

It might help to go read a few forum threads about this particular device.

I own a "Xiaomi Yi" cam. Its very good... But I had to replace the lens because my model was made without an IR filter. Also I had to refocus the lens because it was originally bluey. So as much as I like it, it was also a pain.

Oh... And its not made by Xiaomi, just sold on their store. So everyone uses their name now. Like saying M&S Goodfellas Pizza.

I bought this from Banggood when it was on offer. I researched a lot into action cams before I bought one and this turned out to be ideal for me.

I took it with me when I went Mauritius and done some snorkelling and diving and the videos are unreal absolutely amazing. It is something you need to buy if you are going abroad.

I know the lens it uses is a Sony one, which you know it will produce really good images and videos. The only downside to this was the accessories had to be bought separately. But most I bought from Banggood and eBay without too much hassle.

@All - anyone have experience with Gearbest ? I ordered some items back in 17th Sept and nothing delivered yet. I raised a ticket with them and have been told I need to wait until 19th November before I can ask for a refund or replacement.

I've ordered from Ebay sellers and Banggood in the past and that usually takes 10-15 working days. Unless I have been terribly unlucky with Gearbest, I would advice not ordering unless you can potentially wait up to 2 months for delivery (or not)

I've ordered from gear best once and I had to cancel the order after 3 weeks because they still hadn't dispatched the items from the EU warehouse even though they were still advertising it as "shipped within 1-2 business days". I've ordered from bang good many times and usually have delivery from the EU warehouse (apparently its in the UK) in 3 business days.

There are a lot of clone cameras in China that wont give you any service and never offer firmware updates so if things go tits up you are stuffed, at least with SJ or Xiaomi they actually offer service if things go wrong, but if saving £2 on the price of a £40 quid camera sways you then you cant really complain

Unless they mark value as below £15 - if this gets picked up by the post office then you will be charged vat plus a £8 handling charge by the post office. Because it is a small package, they may assume it is a small value item and not charge you.
I've had about 10 packages from China - mostly low value items and as far as I can tell none have been opened to check their value. So it's likely to get through without customs charge but you can't guarantee it....

I paid for the express shipping from China, but it arrived from a UK address, so no duty to pay.

It sometimes takes 2 or 3 attempts before it connects properly and shows the 'viewscreen' which just takes up about a third of a smartphone screen. There is roughly about a half second delay on the live feed which is perfectly acceptable, and you select the menu via the smartphone to do all the setting up - selecting resolution/ frame rate /inverting /video/ photo/ timelapse mode etc.
Once set up though, it remembers its last configuration, so camera can then be activated via its top button.
The firmware updates are brilliant - usually receiving about one a month which first gets downloaded to the phone & then transferred across to the camera.
A word of warning - There is an option in the menu to switch off all indicator leds on the camera so it operates in a sort of stealth mode -which effectively means that you wont have a clue if the camera is on or off unless its connected to the smartphone.
Overall - a very impressive piece of kit :sunglasses:

I'd use gearbest, found them much better than banggood. I ordered my camera separate to the accessories, smaller parcel is more chance of slipping through. It's VAT + you normally have a fee collection charge of £8 on top. So looking at about £16 possibly.

Mine connects first time every time without fail to my galaxy s3, the small preview is annoying, hopefully they'll add a full screen or landscape mode, they've done this for their IP CAM security cameras so it seems logical. Agree the firmware updates are good, the LED thing I have mine in the half way mode, so main power led off, but camera mode/record status is still on, the full one is too bright for a dashcam, reflects a lot. The Bluetooth remote is only £3.50 currently from gearbest too.

I was about to order from GearBest until i noticed they ship random versions of the camera. I can't be arsed messing about with dodgy cameras so i was happy to see that BangGood had a listing for the allegedly bug free version.

I'm not too worried about VAT, i just wanted to make sure i wouldn't get stung with a HUGE bill!

I've ordered 8 mobile phones from China in the last year, including from Gearbest, Geekbuying, Pandawill and Merimobile. All were sent using slow boat post; China Mail, Singapore Mail or preferably Netherlands Mail if available, the parcels are always marked Stationary, Camera Accessories or similar and I've never been charged duty. If you use DHL or other expedited service you are pretty much guaranteed to get clobbered though.

I now apparently have to send them a copy of a claim ID from yodel before they will refund me. Joke.
As i said £48 from gearbest and no cam and a month of no refund. £50 amazon arrived next day.

I'm not knocking Gearbest for their comms, but the fact that I have no idea where my order from 17th Sept is and they cannot refund till 19th Nov means I don't know whether I should source the product elsewhere or wait,

They do themselves no favours by using whatever post that does not have tracking (even though they somehow still send you a tracking number that doesn't work)

Avoid Gearbest and stick to the likes of Bangood and DealXtreme

My heads battered with action cams, my 9 year old asked for a GoPro but purely as it's the brand she knows. She's mostly doing you tube videos but says wants to start taking action videos. Do I just splash out £300 on a good GoPro that ends up in her draw, do I buy this for its video quality but lack of lcd make it hard for 9 year old, do I get s4000 has everything out the box but quality a little below others? Do I go for the p2 wifi that's an alternative to s4000. Then there's things like s5000 but then it's getting into basic GoPro model pricing?? My thinking is the s4000 wifi for £50 has everything and even this yi will cost £100 with the accessories and still no lcd screen, then if she uses it loads I can think about something better. Please help..

The top of the line GoPro's don't have LCD screens either...(just to add to your confusion  ).
If your child has a smartphone, I'd personally go for the Yi camera. 60fps 1080p is a big selling point.
Also, you don't need to be spending an extra £58 on accessories
If it were me, I'd be buying a waterproof case at £8, and a generic GorillaPod thing for about £10

http://g03.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1067tHVXXXXcnXVXXq6xXFXXXc/Xiaomi-yi-Tripod-Accessories-Mini-Lightweight-Gopro-Tripod-Stand-Mount-For-Xiaomyi-Smart-Camera-Digital-Camera.jpg

That gives you ALL The flexibility you need (selfie stick, multi angle tripod etc).

Also, if your child isn't planning on using the camera near water, you don't even need the waterproof case! The Yi cam has a tripod mount built in.

Cheers for that, yeah she's got a note but didn't think that was much good been so big lumping about with a nice small Camera, plus that seems a lot harder for her to work. My problem with this over other ones is for all it has a better sensor unless you know what your doing and spend a long time changing settings and so on your not gonna get the benefit of the better sensor? With it having no lcd does that make it harder to use as just a camera for putting videos on you tube unless you view it all first through a smartphone?

I've looked at videos on that tech summit guys YouTube page and of the videos he takes I never see a massive difference between most the cameras in this price range.
wenttoabetterplace
21 Oct 15 #112
Probably best to consult with her...

Personally though, I would far sooner have a 60fps 1080p mode (allows for half speed slow mo at 30fps)...than a piddly little screen. There also aren't really any settings that will need changing beyond the initial setup. There are lights on the camera that denote when you are in video mode or still shot mode. Any editing can be done at a proper screen (or via smartphone). Having a smartphone connection also means your daughter will be able to show the photos/videos on that nice big screen - using a familiar interface....rather than the super confusing interfaces on the P2 (and) to a lesser extent, the SJ4000

I also think the tripod mount being on the camera is far preferable. It means the camera can be mounted without a waterproof case - ensuring the microphones aren't distorted.

Best to ask your daughter

I'm looking for a similar camera but want to buy one with all the accessories bundled with it (ie waterproof case ,hat mount etc ) .There's quite a few on ebay but looking for input on which is the one to go for. mainly want it to capture wildlife on walks or to use on fishing trips

Ok - In this instance, I actually shot it all in HD video mode (as seen in the first 14 secs accompanied by the actual station sounds) and then converted the 25 minute movie file into its component jpegs, of which around 1 in 8 were extracted and put into a slideshow maker program - ( Proshow being my personal favourite}. This also allowed for further frame rate reduction {eg ... when the train was standing still at a station for 5 mins, I reduced this to 5 secs}.
I also added the soundtrack at this stage, using a variable transition between frames for the final synch.
But basically any video editing program such as the free Windows Movie Maker will allow you to easily add a different soundtrack.

As for true timelapse on the YI, well there are actually 2 timelapse modes, with the first actually producing the completed movie file 'in camera', and the second producing a series of jpegs to be stitched together later,{ my favourite timelapse assembler being VideoMach - not sure why you only got 100 frames but I recall there might be an option in the menu to limit the timelapse number so uncheck that box.
This is one I made with the YI in true Timelapse mode with Videomach editing >>https://youtu.be/fQQrbkNkS3w

that might be in part due to YouTube's compression. Wherever possible try to download and compare original clips rather that's processed ones from YouTube.

These cameras are great for the money.
I have a Sony A6000 + sel 16-70, GoPro Hero 3+ black, Mobius and have seen clips from a mate's sj4000.

The Sony is obviously the best iq with a relatively large sensor and proper lens. Crap as an action camera of course.

The mobius is a great dash cam but a bit difficult as an action cam due to lack of LCD for mode selection.

The GoPro is better quality than the SJ4000 but nowhere near as good value for money if you're only using it a couple of times per year. By the time you've cropped and stabilised your clips then shared a two mine video on YouTube via Facebook you might a well have saved yourself £200. You could even but a couple of these cheap cameras for more creativity.

Same here with my son.....Then there's the challenge of working out which SJ4000 (or whatever) is fake and which is real, just about every seller on Amazon has somebody claiming they've been sold a fake - maybe even the sellers don't know for sure. Hence when people complain about the quality of the results, is it a poor product or have they unwittingly bought a knock-off?

I can see why people just blow 200 quid or so on a GoPro.

I know that's no help but had to get it off my chest :-)

Nice little gadget, I wanted to know what it was like so did a google search, Techmoan do a good review and i would say is a must read if you are going to buy it : http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2015/3/30/the-full-xiaomi-yi-action-camera-review.html
He gives different frame rates bitrates info and recording times of this gadg, with a micro hdmi lead it will plug into back of your tv, it has no microphone inlet, looks at recording in bright sunshine. the negatives being u think its recording but it hasnt started recording yet, also LEDs are not bright and clear which makes it difficult outdoors to know if it is functioning or not. In short very informative video

hi, interested in buying the xiaomi yi but the models are confusing me.

I've done some research and have realised that the older models have a mic and focus problem. So I was convinced I was going to buy the z23 model from banggood, however after reading some more have realised that the z23L has no IR filter.

Now I am very confused on what model to buy and where from, I need a good mic and focus with IR Filter is this possible?

Whic model is best? Thanks
