I purchased this receiver the last time it was posted on here at roughly the same price and I am delighted with it. This was a couple of months ago and the deal went cold strangely but I'm hoping this time around it might get the heat that I think it deserves!!
I haven't seen the price of this AV drop below £547 here in the UK so this is a saving of almost £180... and you get a lot of receiver for that money:
The Onkyo TXNR646 receiver combines high-quality 7.2 channel amplification with 4K UltraHD HDMI inputs and built-in AirPlay, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth streaming, Spotify Connect, and more for an incredible surround sound experience.
Engineered for Dolby Atmos sound
Optimised for Dolby Atmos, you can be amongst the first to experience the wonder of Dolby Atmos in your own home. Producing a multi-dimensional and totally immersive sound, Dolby Atmos has been hailed as the greatest advance in surround sound for 20 years - so don't miss out!
A powerful performer
Making sure you feel the full impact of DTS:X and Atmos, the Onkyo TX-NR646 boasts a powerful 100w per channel amplifier . The high current design with WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) and discrete circuitry easily sustains powerful but testing dynamics such as explosions and intense action scenes.
High Resolution sound
As well as offering multi-dimensional surround sound, the Onkyo TXNR646 is compatible with High-Resolution Audio. This gives the highest sound quality, that's far more natural sounding than standard audio. The premium 384kHz/32-bit DAC is compatible with a wide range of HD audio formats, including DSD 5.6 MHz and FLAC 192kHz-24-bit for exceptional sound quality.
Wi-Fi with Spotify and AirPlay
Connect via Ethernet or wi-fi to your home network and gain access to a whole new world of entertainment. From here you'll be able to access a massive range of Internet radio stations plus music services such as the hugely popular Spotify and Deezer. New to this year's model is the introduction of AirPlay, making it easier than ever to stream from your Apple iOS devices, too.
Stream music from your mobile with Bluetooth
With a Bluetooth receiver built in, it's easy to enjoy your music from other devices. Pair with your smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC and wirelessly stream all your favourite music. With the possibility of streaming music services, such as Spotify, Deezer and Tidal, as well as your own music library, you get access to near unlimited music! Advanced Music Optimiser improves the dynamic response from compressed music sources, adding 'sparkle' to the sound and restoring the sound quality.
The latest connections
As you'd expect from this leading AV brand, the TXNR646 comes with the latest connectivity. The TXNR646 features the latest HDMI 2.0a connections and supports HDCP 2.2, which means you can stream UltraHD video and that it's ready for the next generation of 4K discs. With twin HDMI outputs you can also have a second AV display in another room.

All it takes is a small bit of decorating. I've channeled the wires in the wall and papered over so all the wires are hidden

Had an ONKYO receiver a few years ago. Sold it on. Too many quirks in the system. Didn't like the sound much either. Went back to Yamaha, which I had before the ONKYO. Been very happy since. Obviously it wasn't this model, but I wouldn't buy one again.

Good price for this model, but I'm resorting to headphones and soundbars instead these days.
Using an AV receiver and good speakers just causes problems with the neighbours (I need a detached) :disappointed:

You don't have to turn it up loud to experience good quality audio. I'm sure a soundbar and subwoofer (if it has one) will be an annoyance anyway.

Just a word about the in built Spotify app, it won't shuffle your playlists which a big dissapointment from me. I'm now using a LG music flow system that is much more versatile

Personally, I can't be a......ed to set up another set of speakers just to 'experience' atmos. And now, I'd never be able to get a matching set. IF this contained a really really good media player which could convert and play ALL the current formats better than any add on box or the built in players of any TVs then maybe. And a Bluray player would be useful and make more sense than most of the other 'features'

OP, just a quick question. Did you buy the atmos speakers or using normal ceiling speakers?

22 Oct 151#18
I haven't set mine up with any atmos speakers yet. I'm still undecided as to whether to commit myself to 5.1.2 or move forward on a 7.1 basis without any atmos for the time being... Personally I don't think my lounge will give me the true atmos benefit unless they are installed in the ceiling which is not something I really want to do in this house..
