Cheapest price for it since ebay discount but that expired very quickly. This is a good alternative for Christmas

A Crazy amount processing power and graphics performance for a ARM Chip. To get the best from Nvidia Gamestream (Modern GTX Card 600 series or above required) or Geforce Now you need good wired ethernet reaching the box (not powerline adapters). Wi Fi on mine is rather weak and it can't see my 5Ghz channel at all unless I take it upstairs. It's a fantastic emulation box for the TV though even Dreamcast & Gamecube emulation is possible though not 100% yet.

I often think Nvidia are like some mad science company. They produce the most amazing graphics cards but cant be relied on as a company? I had 3 Shield Tablets. I bought one at launch and 2 cheap second hand (don't ask why). All three had defective batteries so had to go through the recall scheme. Nvidia sent me 5 replacements all in separate boxes, all with separate return to destroy boxes. I guess the extra 2 were loyalty bonuses? I have so much cardboard from Nvidia its going to take 2 months to get it done by the blue bin
But still I want a Shield TV because they make cutting edge stuff I forgive them every time!

The other cracker is when they released half life 2 and episode 1 for the shield tablet and then made episode 2 an exclusive for the shield tv.

Why are you trying to start an argument and be so defensive. I wanted a box that could do both which this is capable of. It's just a shame nvidia didn't allow it's USB ports to take more than two drives.
ranja81
25 Oct 15#46
You can only use two hard drives on these which is annoying. Bought one to replace my windows 7 KODI box but have 4 drives feeding that so is a no no so it's going back. Is really annoying that they don't advertise that.

There is also the nvidias feature breaking updates , the shield tablet was a joke, the shield hub would get worse with each update.

Good price , heat given even though it's a shield product and will either fall apart or the exclusive games never appear .

It's pretty well made for change, but the ones with Hard Drives had some issues. I do agree it needs more native games and apps too (Android TV app wise is still pretty bare compared to North America)

That's the only issue is Nvidias habit of launching with promise of games that never appear. The Shield Portable was advertised with Hawken and it never appeared (They even played it onstage at the lauch event ffs) then War Thunder was promised for the Shield Tablet and never showed, when it finally did it is exclusive to the Shield TV! Theres some current confusion over Borderlands Pre Sequel. It was promised as bonus free for 500gb buyers but hasn't arrived. Someone asked Nvidia about it and they said to speak to Gearbox as they are porting it and Gearbox said its nothing to do with them, they gave the source code to Nvidia for them to port it...crazy

Is this the thing where you can play PC games on your computer upstairs and it sends the video/sound to TV downstairs?
das5665 to Roger_Irrelevant
24 Oct 15#11
Yes but it also allows you to stream from a powerful PC located elsewhere to play games even better as long as you have a suitable internet connection

Wait a few weeks and buy a steam link for £40 to stream games.
Steam link works with any gfx card, unlike the shield that requires gfx cards.
Or if you have a fire tv or android device install moonlight. And spend nothing !

Nope, Sky only allows apps on PS3/4 and xboxes to work on TV's for some weird reason.

Kodi isn't essentially XBMC it is exactly XBMC, they renamed it!

Are there any downsides to Sheild vs these?
Any holes in the format support or subtitle support for example?

Someone earlier mentioned Kodi on it which is essentially XBMC.
I have a Minix X8-H, a different brand of Android TV box, running Kodi and it works flawlessly. Much better than the WDTV players I had that seemed to struggle with some file-types lately.

Performance figures are from just one benchmarker, WiFi is subjective, apps are cherry picked, console standard quality games is a vague claim. I'm not saying the box is poor just that the claims are a bit pie in the sky.

So what claims are incorrect?

Nothing illegal at all about emulation!
Gamer_U
25 Oct 15#23
Did someone just comment about emulation? But isn't that illegal? Oh, we're doomed! :disappointed:
That's not an independent comparison tho so take some claims with a pinch of salt. Still a great set top box tho.

I bought one on Friday, cant wait for it to arrive. I snagged it for 100 at Cash Generator in mint. Its selling second hand on CEX for 170! Cant work that one out... https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=850438005838#.ViywfhFOcko
Anyway, awesome deal. Check out this thing running Doom 3 BFG edition and War Thunder natively for an idea of why its in a different league to those other set top boxes. Digital Foundry reckon the GPU is a stripped down GTX 950m, same card just with a third of the execution units.

I know exactly what it can do, if you read my post you would see it says if you ONLY stream media i.e videos then you would be better off buying something less expensive, and to run Crysis you'll need as stated on the Nvidia website 30mpbs, something I also mentioned, and I never compared any other device to the shield on running games lol.

You literally dont know what this is if your trying to compare it all of those,
can any of them run crysis?

The point was if you dont have a 4k, super fast broadband and only stream netflix and media you can spend 6x as less and get a new chromecast, a roku box or sideload plex onto a £9.99 Now T.V box and save over a £100 quid, don't get me wrong I want one of these too, and I'm **** I missed out on the Ebay deal to get one the other day, but for the average streamer you'd be better off with a new chromecast.
pelaquin
24 Oct 152#1
Good price, but to stream games you'll need around 30mbps, and obviously to benefit from the 4k streaming you'll need a 4K T.V, otherwise a great piece of kit, you can load all the emulators on them, megadrive, dreamcast, psp, snes the lot, and it recently had the Iplayers added to them in the last update, but I think unless you got the broadband speed for it and a 4K T.V you're better off with something else.
