UPDATE - Yeah seems like if u talk to sales rep about the mistake they made with specs they might give u a discount I got £20 off the first time I tried. If the Inspiron promo code expired then just make a little sob story about how u really need this laptop but the code didn't work or something so they might just add there own discounts to the system .

Take this from someone who for the last 3-4 days has been scouring the internet for used, manufacturer refurbished, and even imported gaming laptops at the £600-1000 range:
£699 for a laptop with those specs, particularly the GTX960M 4GB and the i7-6700HQ chipsets - simply does not exist today. This is a stupendously good price. If I were to try to find any other laptop brand new with the kind of specs this Dell Inspiron has I'd easily be in the £1000+ range. I'm so sure of this I'll accept any challenge on the matter .
The next best option I could find was a manufacturer refurbished Lenovo Y50-70 with a GTX960M 2GB and an i7-4010Q, with the same RAM, HDD, and everything else as this Dell. That was for £750 from the US (price including delivery, import and customs costs via eBay).
I hesitated due to the Lenovo Superfish rootkit drama, BIOS locking and other shenanigans Lenovo like to do, as well as the atrocious Wifi boards those models are plagued with - but boy am I glad I hesitated.
OP, I'd give you all the heat on the internet if I could.

£200 cheaper than this one but obviously terrible specifications compared to this.
Is this worth £200 more? Not sure what i want, tbh wanted a new desktop and dad wants a cheap laptop for Christmas.

I decided not to wait for delivery from Dell and ordered one off ebay, £859 for the 4k screen and 256GB SSD options. It arrived in one day, was brand new, factory sealed and had the full warranty. Other specs were also available. Seller was called ecomputers.

I was told that delivery would be 2 months from when I ordered. I was told by a rep that it would be delivered much sooner (they didn't tell me an exact date or how long) I waited around 28 days.. Still no laptop. The order status was in preproduction. I cancelled contacted dell and told them I was going to cancel and they did it straight away. When I told them why they accepted it and that was that. I then went to another shop and bought a much better laptop and it arrived the next day.

I can recommend Good Old Games (gog.com) for digital downloads of games. Not always the latest and greatest (hence the company title) but DRM free and very reasonably priced. They also do regular promotions. Not long back they bundled just about every "Dungeons & Dragons" style game worth having (some 15 titles) for well south of £20.

Most games run through a program called Steam. You download this for free from their website. When you buy a game from Amazon, choose to buy a digital download rather than a physical disc. Amazon will email you a key code. You then enter this code in Steam, and the game will be added to your Steam library and automatically start downloading
It's a great system

You can either buy a CD reader you can plug in via USB (20 to 40 quid from amazon or ebay), or download games which is what most people do these days. You can also plug in a Xbox 360 usb controller if you wanna play games like it was a console, or use mouse and keyboard. (seeing as you have a ps4 controller, it's also possible to connect that to the PC and use that instead)
I recommend buying this  runs GTA V like a charm

Did you try this? :
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).
2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
8. Click "Next".
9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

The screen is exactly as you describe it and the main reason I returned mine. If you are thinking of returning it, then it will definitely help if you received it less than 14 days ago, as they asked me the exact date I got it. Apart from that I was surprised how simple the process was; they arranged to collect it the day after I called them, asked no questions and gave me a full refund.

I got this laptop last week and I must say, it is not bad. Not sure about the graphics as I have not been playing a lot of games on it.
One thing that annoys me about it is that the "Intel graphics driver for Windows 8 has stopped working!" Very buggy, considering the fact that I am using a Windows 10 machine! I've installed the basic university software packages such as Word 2013 etc.
I can only comment on processing and RAM later when I start doing some programming , because at the moment it is being used very lightly - i.e. not many resources used. Admittedly I am more of a desktop fan, but have had to resort to a laptop due to university commitments.
Please feel free to offer me some tips and suggestions and even hacks for this laptop. Looking to upgrade the RAM etc

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure if this would void the Dell warranty - the original hard drive it comes with is pretty fast too.
I only use the laptop when I'm travelling so my type of use won't be anywhere near as much as yours but for programming should be perfectly fine!
I took it on a 9 hour train journey last week and had no issues at all, battery lasted for a whole 7 hour train journey (constant use), I was then able to charge it on the first class trains for the remainder of the journey.
As I mentioned in my previous post, the touchpad feels quite 'loose' when you're clicking etc but I use a mouse so this isn't a problem for me.
I didn't go for the touch screen because from what I've read in reviews, it has a 'glare' to the screen, whereas the non-touch has anti-glare screen.
Hope this helps.

8 Nov 15#308
Nice
But you would say there is no way of Dell voiding the warranty for say just upgrading these parts?
I wanted a SSD as well, and when I checked on their website, the cheeky **** have raised the price and put it under smart selection - meaning that customers would get the product a lot quicker!
Anyway, do you think the laptop will last me two years or more? I only invested about £900 as I wanted to do some intensive programming for my final year at university? How is she in terms of portability, speed, battery life and efficiency? Which one did you end up buying? The touch or just standard (non-touch)?
GmodLUA
8 Nov 15#307
Extremely easy - just make sure you clone the HDD you get with the laptop first (ALL partitions) then remove 1 screw on the back of the laptop and the rest is just clips, so pull off the back panel.
You will see the HDD - just unscrew the 4 screws and replace with the SSD. Done.
I got my SSD from Amazon when it was on lightning deal - not sure where best place is atm.

No I haven't been able to test in the dell as my laptop is still to arrive. I'm assuming it's m2 sata port as people have had no luck booting or using it as storage. But the sm951 is a pain to setup as video tutorials show so I guess there is always a small probability it may boot with the right bios support. The mobo I have seems to support both 951 and nvme which was a great choice.
Anyway with the new magician if you enable rapid mode on 850 evo m2 you will get faster speeds. On my 840 evo I got 6gb/s faster than the sm951 but it's all SDRAM caching so not to put all your faith in results.
Anandtech showed rapid mode improved overall performance in Samsung ssds.
Typey1
28 Oct 15#276
So it could be purely sata then. Did you try your sm951 nvme in the dell?

For what it's worth.. This drive is unrecognisable in a lot of systems. Even in x99 and z170 sky lake board people are having issues.
However even if your bios or OS does not recognise it the following video shows that it still may work.
I have a m2 sata drive and will plug into a pci-e port to see if it boots. If it does then surely a PCi-e port supports both sata and pcie. However a purely sata port may not support pci-e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No-ct8pQcIg
Just tested m2 sata in pci-e port. No boot and bios doesn't recognise.

I Run magician 4.8 and I ticked show hidden files, folders and drives if that's the correct one but sadly no sign of sm951 pci-e nvme or in the bios.
So you're up And running with the 850 evo sata 3? How's it all performing compared to the original drive?
adam1
27 Oct 15#269
Well done . Use the magician software to optimise your boot ssd. U can benchmark both drives and soon once Samsung updates magician for win10 then u can enable rapid mode.
Samsung has just released a retail version of 950 pro for m2 which is nvme PCi-e and promised to update magician for it for win10.
Rapid mode utilises sdram caching and although it's risky for mission critical systems the ssd virtually runs like the speed of RAM. My magician benchmarks exceeded anything ssd could do on its own.

27 Oct 15#268
So I just cloned it using the Samsung software and removed the hard drive. It booted up fine but before inserting the hard drive back in I want to make sure it boots off the ssd and not hdd...the thing is there doesn't seem to be a boot priority in the bios tab to select ssd instead of hdd. The only option it seems right now is formatting the hard drive? Maybe create a bootable USB iso before doing so but would windows still activate if for some reason the SSD messes up one day and I have to use the USB?
EDIT: So I put the hdd back in and went to bios. It recognises both drives...SSD showing up as the first drive and HDD as second which I assume means it's booting up from the SSD. This is confirmed when I check the computer screen on desktop as it shows the SSD drive as OS but now the hard drive is not coming up at all. Is it because both drives have windows affecting it?
EDIT 2: Sorted. There's an option in control panel that's called storage spaces. You can enable hidden drives that way. I know it's a long shot but if anyone has the pci m.2 drive maybe check if you can enable it that way.
adam1
27 Oct 15#266
Try cloning hdd to ssd using macrium which works. Otherwise u could install Windows via usb. Then u can re-install hdd and have it as secondary with ssd primary boot device.

26 Oct 15#264
Can confirm 850evo m.2 is recognised. I had it in there and it discovered it with the magician software but not as a normal drive on the 'my computer' screen. Have not implemented the boot function yet. Should I just clone the hard drive and then change bios to boot to ssd? I didn't find the option on bios when I first installed the drive but I'll most likely clone it then take the hard drive out and see if it boots up
adam1
26 Oct 15#263
Those are all sata3 so its only a m2 sata drive in the slot.

26 Oct 15#260
I remember when i installed mine windows would not show it. I installed samsung magician and it picked up the nvme drive. It offered me 2 drives to select to benchmark.
However the bios should see it is connected even though OS can't. Just read on a website its a msata port but clarify that before you order sata drive. Just to clarify it the above was done on an m2 pci-ex4 port on asrock z97.

26 Oct 15#258
That's what I would have done as sm951 only accepts a uefi install and a gpt partition not std one when u clone from a sata drive. However if you clone a gpt partition which was installed via a uefi install it should work. Boot via usb to do a uefi install. You may have to remove the hdd just in case you select wrong hdd to put OS on.
Typey1
26 Oct 15#257
Decided to keep it! lol
Spoke to scan and they said try the 951nvme but install Windows from the usb not clone (dont know why) after bios update, if no joy they'd accept return minus delivery within 14days. So thit attempt should be conclusive given the achi failed with others, fingers crossed.

I got the laptop, and I just want some advice from you guys.
I have some (what I believe are) some dead pixels on my screen. That is to say when I have a black/dark background there is a very, very tiny couple of specs of white on the screen. I know it's definitely not dust, because I've wiped it, and it's not there when the laptop is off. So is there a way to fix this without returning the item to Dell or will I have to return/exchange it.
Additionally, how is everyone else finding the laptop, this was my first new computer in about 10 years (from a PC) and tbh maybe I was expecting the world, but it's OK. I do need a new laptop, so do you think this is the best I can get for ~£700 or are there better options?

Check reviews of the inspiron 15 7558 thats an all aluminium laptop and has a good trackpad..although its keyboard flexes slightly....its not as fast but you can pick one up for 500-600 quid on dell website with 1yr warranty
thekitkatshuffler
25 Oct 15#250
Aside from the SSD ballache situation, how are those who've received the laptop finding it in everyday use?
Reviews on Dell's site are starting to suggest that the trackpad is terrible and the performance is poor considering the components used.

I'm not very happy with mine to be honest, trackpad is surprisingly poor and performance isn't great as you say, Probably ring Dell and return it Monday, sadly.
MagicianLord to thekitkatshuffler
25 Oct 151#253
Although I have used laptops before, this is the first one that I ever owned and I was really excited about it, but in general I am rather underwhelmed. The trackpad is ok and I can use it without getting frustrated but performance can be disappointing; I have done a clean install and adjusted the trackpad button delay but it still feels rather sluggish compared to my desktop. Of course it's possible that the laptop CPU is actually slower than my desktop one (i5 4670 @ 3.40).
The screen is nothing special either with light leaking on the edges, blurry text and large brightness variation at an angle. Again this has to do with the fact that it's not a glossy screen and (possibly) not IPS either.
Still I'm very interested in hearing other people's impressions too.

Just had cfm on another forum from US that a sata drive works in the m2 slot which would cfm that it only supports std m2 drives not the faster PCi-e drives. That person is using a Samsung sata m2 drive. This would cfm why it would not be seen as storage as well as not recognised in bios. However dell tech on that forum has claimed sm951 works which clearly it doesn't . Oh well I will need to return my 951 when it arrives as I only bought to test anyway.
adam1
24 Oct 15#247
I think in real world any ssd will be better than hdd but when your doing video editing sm951 will be faster but everything else booting up will be as fast with any ssd in the m2.
adam1
24 Oct 15#246
To be honest I would rather buy a decent size ssd unless you need large storage. 850m2 evo is close to its 2.5 inch version. There will be a 950 pro in m2 version only ,as good as 951 but I think it will be pic-e only so not compatible if going by what we are seeing .
I have a transcend m2 sata in my m2 and it's quite fast but with the Samsung you get rapid mode which makes everything insanely fast so I would stick to evo. Unfortunately no-one has made that work on Windows 10 yet as Samsung not update drivers.
jay-uk
24 Oct 15#245
Dissapointing but understandable if they were designed that long ago. Is the 850 evo m.2 any good? I know it's standard but as an ssd for using Windows OS will it boot up faster?

24 Oct 15#243
I think it's fair to say if ahci isn't recognised then nvme will not as well. This could be a problem with update on bios but I'm reading that someone has tried the sata 850 evo and it worked which confirms its a std m2 sata slot . Why on earth dell chose this I'm not clear but if they designed it 6-12 mths ago pic-e m2 was in its infancy.

Typey1
24 Oct 15#241
If the 951 pci-e ahci isn't recognized then what's the chance of the nvme version given that it's also pci-e, as you said the pc isn't seeing it as a storage device. My sm951 nvme ssd is delivered on Monday from scan, I'll ring to ask advice on try and return but I doubt they'd agree to it.
Is Sata 3 the only other alternative .Frustrating it is!
Three days days ago I'd never heard of an m2, it's bloody haunting me now!
adam1
24 Oct 15#239
Try cloning software macrium or Samsung data migration wizard from Samsung website. They should see you drive. If both can't see the drive then we have a problem as the system is unable to recognise drive even as storage which is unusual as 951 may not be always bootable but will be seen as storage if the slot is compatible .

Tried cloning the original hard drive onto an SSD - replaced old hard drive with SSD and come up with Dell SupportAssistance on boot saying hardware issue.. Something tells me we can't replace it with an SSD?
I only cloned the OS from the original drive because when I went to clone all partitions, it said insufficient storage?
ESP is 33MB
Unformatted Primary is 128MB
OS is 53GB
WINRETOOLS is 438MB
Image is 11GB
Any idea why it wouldn't allow me to clone these onto a 256GB SSD?
I can see some of those partitions are formatted as FAT32 and NTFS - would this be the issue?

This is frustrating. Maybe try updating bios? Also check for the samsung software suite for this SSD online, install it and try see if it detects it that way like Adam suggested. Which version is it nvme or ahci?
Look for m2 in bios . Also in computer disk management u will see the drive.
I would use Samsung data migration which will see the drive and clone it or use macrium reflect. You can only boot using uefi boot not legacy with the m2.
Look at boot options once installed .
Go to ramcity website or flexram and they advise on boot options .

That's That's great news Adam and you've hit the jackpot with your research.
This info Dell support hasn't a clue about so all we need now is the sm951 installed and tested!
Download brief and intro states it supports nvme drives and pci-ex4
It's disappointing for Dell not to mention M2 drive type in the manual or specs. As any consumer wanting to install drive will need to buy correct version either sata3 or pci-e(nvme or ahci). The protocol is unique and sata3 do not work in pci-e slots.
MattyD_UK
23 Oct 15#222
Someone in this thread, post 287, said that the dell techy told him it's "PCIe 3.0 (x4) and samsung sm951 will work fine with it".
That's reassuring . From the data from jay the only use controllers showing are sata and the PCi-e for Realtek card reader. However one is empty which could mean when the ssd is plugged in will show as pci-e device with the ssd as the device.
The proof of the pudding will be in the eating... Unless someone actually tests it is not going to show in any reports as that when info is picked up my OS.

When you get a chance if you take a pic of the m2 slot or better still run aida64 which will name the pci-e controller for us. See post 198 for link. That will settle this for us as it not a sata controller it's pic-e we are looking for on the m2.

If he said the m2 slot supports pci-e then the ssd should work. The 951 comes in 2 flavours AHCI or NVHCI( known as nvme) or non volatile host controller interface. The bios supports the nvme whereas the ahci should be supported if m2 slot is pci-e enabled. Older m2 slots in z97 chipsets support the old sata std. The new Macbook pro has the pci-e m2. It would be a bit strange for dell to implement an old sata std in m2 slot when all new skylake boards have the pci-e enabled and this is a six gen cpu..
If nvme is not supported you can use the ahci version which is nearly as fast as long as the slot connects to the cpu pci lanes.

Mine arrived this afternoon. I won't get to play with it until this weekend.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts you may have as to what checks I should run to make sure all is working correctly, then what I should do with it first (eg install updates, create a back-up, etc.).
It's been a long time since I've had a new laptop, so I'm pretty rusty on what to do first. I don't want to launch in to using it, installing new programs, etc. and then find there is something I should have done first.
Also, assuming all is working correctly, are there any obvious hardware/memory upgrades I should be making and should I invest in an external drive (I do occasionally burn DVDs). Would a Blu-Ray drive make any sense?
Thanks in advance.

I would backup your OS or clone your drive in case your hdd dies. That way you won't need a copy of your os disk to re-install. Note your windows 10 serial which will be generic as it will be stored in the bios anyway.
My first upgrade will be to clone hdd to ssd and use hdd as secondary drive . Leave hdd as is don't format it just in case you ssd dies.
Update Windows 10 and install latest drivers from dell website.
Remove any dell crap like antivirus trials. Use Microsoft or kaspersky if u have Barclays acc since it's free .
Then move any large files or programs to hdd and use ssd as boot drive only.

Quote from US forum
Alright, just to clear everything up for people I did install a Samsung SATA SSD into the M.2 slot and it has been working perfectly. Afterwards I put a call into Dell to confirm this and the person I spoke to confirmed that this laptop only supports SATA in the M.2 slot. I suppose people can get a PCIe drive and try it, but assuming the Dell rep wasn't wrong it looks like it is only SATA.
Also, the model I have with the 5400 RPM 1 TB SSHD was kind of sluggish on booting and running the OS overall. I bought a small crucial SSD, cloned the drive and swapped it out. Right now it boots up 5x faster. I know the SSHD learn your behavior and so there is a chance that the boot times and the overall OS would run quicker overtime, but even with the cache the 5400 RPM drive just seems slow and outdated. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this or not.
So, if i could go back and do it all over again (and if you can live with and i5) i would probably have waited until the Amazon model came out and bought that. It comes with an 256GB SSD and then i would have just added more storage into the M.2 slots. But, now that the system is fully running on SSD I do really enjoy this laptop. Yes, the fan is blow pretty hard when gaming, but i wear headphones so i never notice it really anyway.

Did they say which type of m2 it supports sata or pci-e? As the samsung 951 is the pci-e type. Of which there are 2 versions..nvme and ahci. I have read the samsung 850 m2 works which points to a sata type...whether it can accept both as my m2 slot works on sata and pci-e in a desktop.

specs v price seem great, but, and its a BIG but,I swore I would never buy another dell after the studio 1558.fan/overheating problems .It would seem lots of inspirons have these issues too.Its a design fault and dell don't want to know.Very tempted though as these specs tick all my boxes, will wait for reviews.

everything you actually want from that zoostorm can be added or upgraded in the Dell. The fact the you want a weaker processor and weaker specs in general that cannot be replaced or upgraded is beyond me.

Trying to decide between one of these or a similarly price and specced Zoostorm G4 from Argos
The Zoostorm has a less capable but still excellent processor with 16GB of RAM, IPS FHD screen and a 120GB SSD on top of the 1TB hard drive - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4453282.htm - I'd get 10% off the list price too.
Does anyone know if Zoostorm builds are any good?

hi guys
do you need to overclock to get the 3.5ghz speed? and how is that process done? also does doing the risk cpu burn out and invalidate warranty?
thanks
k4mr4n_nfs to superzab
20 Oct 15#134
intel turbo boost technology will boost the clock speed of i think at least one core to its full speed of 3.5Ghz. this is done when the system is under a heavy cpu intensive load where a program(s) is really pushing the system, turning the computer to high performance mode and like gaming will probs ramp up the clock speed, if the surrounding area is nice and cool the laptop should be blazing. no need to overclock this plus u cant overclock unless its a intel K series chip which is moslty desktop stuff. CPU wont burn out cuz of the thermal limit set on the chips, if it reaches its limit which in this case is 100 degrees celcius it will shut down by itself

That's exactly my plan. Just make sure the m2 is the Samsung sm951 or the new 950 pro m2 2280 size. You will boot in secs. I have it in my z97 board with ultra m2. Just hope the m2 supports PCi-ex4. I wonder if it supports nvme m2 drives .. Which improve on latency ...and random writes.
Being hm170 chipset I would assume nvme is supported by default.

Anyone check out the new Dell XPS 15 with the InfinityEdge display?
I know it costs nearly double for the same internals (except HDD) but does anyone think the compact size and premium finish warrants the extra cost?
"Costs nearly double" should answer that question for you.
The InfinityEdge display looks great, but thats really the only feature you're getting. The £1099 model has less VRAM and an i5 processor compared to the £749 Inspiron.

Just ordered this for £674.10. More of a discount than this post offers. Would recommend you talk to sales rep and request the VIP discount. Sign ups to the VIP discounts aren't available right now, but if you go through the sales rep, you can still get this price. You'll either need to use a student educational email address like I did, or order it though your 'employee' discount (This time last year I bought a laptop by saying I worked at Apple. Didn't ask me any follow up questions, the company just needs to be part of the program). Either option will get you 10% off (£674.10). Having said this, the sales chat rep will need to take payment and confirm delivery details over the phone which is annoying, but it's legit. For anyone wondering if you can get them to use the code as well as the VIP discount, you can't - I tried.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks for posting OP

To be honest I reckon 16GB is overkill For normal usage on a laptop, 8GB is still plenty RAM this day of age , if have hundreds of tabs open especially if it's chrome and your got multiples other heavy programs open at same time then yeah 16 will help but still 8GB is definitely plenty. good to see people getting prices as low as £690-700 on the base model. don't forget the GET DEAL link will not take you to the deal, copy the link in description. share the deal and let people know that they may need to have a quick chat session with the sales rep online to negotiate a cheaper price ( seems to be working for a lot of you!)
I personally think this model line with 15" having 1080p is sweet spot, the GPU will be best at this resolution, the higher tier prices give you 4K screens and SATA SSD's but tbh its just going to tax the gpu and battery life end of the day. and don't even think its a 60Hz panel at 4K.

I've had a couple of these top of the range Inspirons and they have both been nothing but trouble in all honesty. Both bought on very similar deals from Dell. They do this same kind of deal at this time of year, every year.
While they have been really great when they are working, they have broken and needed repair several times now. And the software support, at least, from Dell is atrocious on the models I had. Google something like 'Inspiron problems' and you'll get an idea of issues, that rarely even get resolved.
One of them, the Inspiron 7520 that I had and bought with discount codes for something like £580, cannot be upgraded past Windows 8 and keep the switchable graphics function, because there is no working driver available, so the graphics card is useless if you upgrade.
The thermal paste was pretty much missing, causing overheating and it had to go back for that sorting. 3 times over 1.5 years, it went into a reboot cycle, needing re-install of windows.
After 13 months the Dell battery totally died and held no charge at all.
It too was offered with something like a 3 week delivery date, which kept being extended and ended up nearly 2 months.
The build quality on that one was poor, it creaked and groaned when you picked it up, and a lot of brittle plastics were used.
The other one had broadly similar problems.
But one excellent thing that came out of ownership of the 7520 in particular is, that they hold their value very well. I sold it months ago for £420 on ebay even noting the duff battery. ( But including a small Evo SSD)
I had a Dell Latitude laptop about a decade ago too that had a lot of problems, so I think that's me done with Dell. Great laptops when they are working though, in my experience.

Looking at some youtube video, the 7000 series is pretty simple. Flip back cover and replace the HDD.
Since it has a 2.5" HDD the weight won't change much at all when replacing to SSD, only desktop 3.5" HDDs are bulky with some weight on it.

G751 1080p IPS screen is considered to by very nice indeed. There is a BR drive too which is v useful for my purposes. 4 USB 3.0 on G751 also, and it should stay very cool and whisper quiet. GFX has only 2GB mem.
There is supposed to be a know issue with 2 LHS USB 3.0 ports, connection / speed / USB power - don't know about a reliable fix for this. It appears that one of the two rear SATA bays might not be SATA III compatible, only SATA II.

14 Oct 15#57
Great price - hot added - especially considering the battery life for a i7 quad core. Shame they haven't put in dual drives (SSD+HDD) like the MSI's but still great value.
A question: why is the old 4720HQ still faster than the 6700HQ? There doesnt seem to be much power saving (45W vs 47W) so not in the same league as the U range of processors... Is it really much of an upgrade?
Shaun777 to ns100uk
15 Oct 15#59
it's not faster. It's just clocked lower presumably for power saving. It has a newer core architecture which makes it perform better at tasks at lower clocks and more efficiently. Not much comparison atm because the 6700 is relatively new. But it's 2 full generations ahead of the 4720 so I doubt it's slower.
I just cant see it :disappointed: it offers only with i7-5500U

To check laptop GPU specks and gaming benchmarks there's a site I find pretty handy called notebookcheck. It claims this model 960M with 4GB ram is pretty decent especially paired with the i7 6700HQ , will play latest games at 1080p high settings definitely play casual games max out

It's comparable to the 750ti desktop card so pretty decent. A 970m would be a lot better but the spec dell have put together here for this money is fantastic.
lump
14 Oct 15#48
What are peoples thoughts on the 960m? It ranks low overall on the gpu benchmarks, but seems to vary wildly depending on the other hardware present.
A heavily over clocked i5 might keep up with an i7 on a desktop, but this is a laptop deal and laptop i5 chips are usually only 2 core, so a 4 core i7 will blow a laptop i5 out of the water. Heavy overclocking in laptops often causes overheat problems, so not really recommmended. If your application does benefit from hyperthreads as well that's just a bonus.

Hottest gaming laptop deal around should be 1000 degrees! Good find thanks for posting!
Or just go to dell.co.uk > For Home > Laptops > "New 15" (under Inspiron 7000 series)
The voucher code didn't work for me online, but click live chat and ask them to put the quote together for you. I went for the £849 base option (with UHD touch screen) + £25 1 year accidental damage cover (plan on upgrading the hard drive and figured this might be useful if I break something!) less the £50 offer, should have been £824 but for some reason I was quoted £821.54 which I readily accepted
PS The quote started but GDDR5 and GDDR3 on the same line and I queried it, I was assured it's GDDR5 (4Gb) and that it's an error on the spec sheet.

I need a new laptop for work, and originally I was eyeing up the new XPS 15 because I can get a good deal on it. But from what I can tell, the only advantages of getting the XPS 15 over the Inspiron 7000 is the InfinityEdge display (small bezels) and 2133 MHz RAM. Otherwise the HDD, resolution etc. are all the same. The Inspiron even has 4GB VRAM on the GPU (2GB on the XPS), and is £350 cheaper!

I must say, this is massive amounts of pc for the money. The quad core skylake cpu and the graphics card are excellent for a laptop of this price, as are the screen, keyboard and OS. The ram and hard drive could arguably both be better, but at this price it is hard to see how, and they are both cheap upgrades if you use this site and a screwdriver!

If your a student in a tight ass room sure I can understand getting this, otherwise get a proper pc which is better, easier to upgrade and cheaper!
The technology / maths behind hyperthreading has not changed.
So to sum up, a heavily overclocked i5 will keep up with a stock i7 in most situations. 30/30/30/30 - 120. So just over the added power of 1 more core. Stick 1Ghz or more onto your i5 and your nearly clawing back the same added power. I'd rather have it than not have it, but it's nowhere near the same gain as extra cores. Also in some circumstances HT is undesirable altogether as it can create results that can't be interpolated easily. For instance falsification of CPU utilization.
Was just about to say the same thing, but it is also very much dependent on what you do, if you have 8 power hungry processes this processor will beat the c*ap out of an i5 with essentially same cores.
As an example I have i7 3610QM and have been doing some programming which involved running the same program for a long time and basically up to 4th thread there is no slowdown, going over 4 sees you slowing down to about 80% and processor going into uncomfortable highs temperaturewise.

"hyperthreading enabled so essentially 8 cores!" - Nowhere close to being nearly 8 cores. Threads don't even compare to the power of a core.

Why it's so cold i don't know. It's no HP cashback where you can send anything back but I'm sure there are qualifying items you can send them that isn't worth £100.

yeah should have two RAM slots with one coming occupied with an 8GB stick of SO-DIMM. just add another 8GB to the other slot ut make sure you check to see the specs of the already installed module to get a matching one. Mr Memory is a good site to check out.

Hey guys, deciding between this Dell inspiron and an msi pe70.. 17.3" - Core i5 4210H - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD, NVIDIA GTX 960M - 2 GB GDDR5.
.. Both almost identical prices. Is there much in it between the two? Thank you for any advice.

Yes the difference is major processor wise the Dell has one of the most powerful and latest laptop CPUs , the Skylake i7 6700HQ is 4 cores at 2.6Ghz and turbos to 3.5Ghz also its hyperthreading enabled so essentially 8 cores!
The hard drive is also a hybrid in this dell so it has 8GB of flash storage for quicker access to programs, responsiveness and load times are improved with this type of drive.
The Dell also has 4GB of GDDR5 so can handle higher resolutions if you want to connect to external displays or even go for the higher models on the same page that have 4K screens. Dells hardware is pretty good too and very reputable.

I almost placed an order for a laptop on PCSpecialist for £1000 with similar spec.. Thank you OP!
Just ordered one through an online rep for £696.58. Estimated delivery date is: 05/11/2015 so around 3 weeks which will give me enough time to buy an SSD drive.
Only thing I'm worried about is Windows 10 as everything else sounds great...
Looks like a really good price for this spec gaming laptops are finally getting cheaper.

First of all the price is 698.60 inc. vat and delivery for today "Save £50 on select Inspiron 7000 Series and XPS PCs. Use the coupon code PREMIUMSALE. Offer ends 14 Oct.".
Also I have confirmed that the battery is a 6-cell one. "Marathon battery life: With a 6-cell 74Whr battery, expect 10+ hours of battery life to power your favorite games and videos without interruption. Combined with a 1” thin design and strong performance, this laptop makes it easy to take it all with you."
Finally the online rep insisted that the graphics card has DDR3 memory but apparently someone was told that it is DDR5.
In any case I'm buying one!

Thanks for reply, yes I followed those instructions and it did fix the problem, very temperamental machine the original problem with picture freeze reacurred also. When I download a driver update I then deleted the file from downloads, I think this is ok to do according to Dell support anyway or am I wrong.
Agent (: "when there is global shortage of screen of this size and dueto this lead time went to 30-40 days and that is why we have not taken any amount for this order"
Maybe £750 at a push
Matt.
You will see the HDD - just unscrew the 4 screws and replace with the SSD. Done.
I got my SSD from Amazon when it was on lightning deal - not sure where best place is atm.
Just out of interest, did you end up upgrading your SSD on this laptop?
If so, which hard drive did you buy and was it easy to do?
If you are saying there is no ribbon or seal - then it is hard to tell I guess.
I haven't received my product yet - but I really want to upgrade to the SSD. Is this easy to do, and where can I get a good cheap one?
When I opened mine there were definitely no ribbons etc so not sure how they could check this?
BTW, does anyone know if you void your warranty if you add more memory or ssd yourself?
Also, how are people finding this laptop?
one more thing.. If I upgrade the Hard Drive to an SSD will that void warranty?
6:07:45 PM Customer Chris
That is, if I buy & install the SSD myself.
6:07:50 PM Agent sunil_n1
Yes if you do it your self the warranty will be void
Where can I get a good ssd and 8gb ram for £100?
But is the laptop any good? Has anyone purchased one and is pleased with the screen or performance? as comments so far don't seem that good for a laptop that has great specs.
Replaced HDD with SSD - boot/shutdown time is now 5 seconds.
Playing CSGO at around 150FPS - fans only kick in once every 15-30 minutes but only for 30 seconds.
The touchpad seems kind of 'loose' and makes a bit of noise but I use a mouse so that doesn't bother me at all.
Windows programs/folders etc have really blurry text - fixed this by changing the default text size to 100% instead of 125%..
All in all, 9/10
There doesnt seem to be any of the lower spec configs anymore or at least hardly any options to change the spec?

Anyway with the new magician if you enable rapid mode on 850 evo m2 you will get faster speeds. On my 840 evo I got 6gb/s faster than the sm951 but it's all SDRAM caching so not to put all your faith in results.
Anandtech showed rapid mode improved overall performance in Samsung ssds.

Your text here
So you're up And running with the 850 evo sata 3? How's it all performing compared to the original drive?
Samsung has just released a retail version of 950 pro for m2 which is nvme PCi-e and promised to update magician for it for win10.
Rapid mode utilises sdram caching and although it's risky for mission critical systems the ssd virtually runs like the speed of RAM. My magician benchmarks exceeded anything ssd could do on its own.
I would find a samsung evo 850 model this slot takes as it will be fast and with samsung magician software will be faster Ask dell if that would be compatible .

However the bios should see it is connected even though OS can't. Just read on a website its a msata port but clarify that before you order sata drive. Just to clarify it the above was done on an m2 pci-ex4 port on asrock z97.
Spoke to scan and they said try the 951nvme but install Windows from the usb not clone (dont know why) after bios update, if no joy they'd accept return minus delivery within 14days. So thit attempt should be conclusive given the achi failed with others, fingers crossed.
Might buy a laptop cooling pad to defeat that issue.
Reviews on Dell's site are starting to suggest that the trackpad is terrible and the performance is poor considering the components used.
The screen is nothing special either with light leaking on the edges, blurry text and large brightness variation at an angle. Again this has to do with the fact that it's not a glossy screen and (possibly) not IPS either.
Still I'm very interested in hearing other people's impressions too.
I have a transcend m2 sata in my m2 and it's quite fast but with the Samsung you get rapid mode which makes everything insanely fast so I would stick to evo. Unfortunately no-one has made that work on Windows 10 yet as Samsung not update drivers.
Is Sata 3 the only other alternative .Frustrating it is!
Three days days ago I'd never heard of an m2, it's bloody haunting me now!
Your one is the AHCI version which is just like mine and the nvme version is supposed to be better but oh well. I hope yours gets sorted out soon as I just received mine from CCL and will not open mine yet as I won't be able to return it otherwise.
installed the Samsung MZHPV256HDGL-00000 - Samsung which I think is the adhi version.
disk management only showing the 1tb sata hdd and I can't see any option for m2 under bios
That's great news Adam and you've hit the jackpot with your research.
This info Dell support hasn't a clue about so all we need now is the sm951 installed and tested!
http://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/chipsets/mainstream-chipsets/hm170-qm170-chipset-brief.html

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating... Unless someone actually tests it is not going to show in any reports as that when info is picked up my OS.
Does it show storage controllers especially for m.2 slot. It will have sata controllers for hdd but should list different ones for m2. I going to run aida64 on my m2 ultra to see what I have .

Any thoughts on a good Blu-Ray/DVD drive? Last time I looked, Blu-Ray drives were very expensive and I couldn't justify the cost.
Thanks!
Also does anyone find that their screen is quite blurry? When reading text on white background, the text is kind of blurred.
I have a Barclays credit card, but not a bank account. Will that entitle me to the anti-virus software? I am using AVG Free at the moment (which has always worked well for me).
Thanks again.
Thanks in advance.
cjp64
My first upgrade will be to clone hdd to ssd and use hdd as secondary drive . Leave hdd as is don't format it just in case you ssd dies.
Update Windows 10 and install latest drivers from dell website.
Remove any dell crap like antivirus trials. Use Microsoft or kaspersky if u have Barclays acc since it's free .
Then move any large files or programs to hdd and use ssd as boot drive only.

Pls virus check program first.
Just a question though, did you get a delivery date confirmation email the day before it arrived or did it just show up?
Also I've just been told by a sales droid on live chat that this machine does NOT have an M.2 interface internally.
Since there is such variability in the quality of sales advice, can new owners confirm that it does have M.2 support please? Cheers.
Not sure if Dell didn't pass on my mobile number/email?
Got a text from Dell with the time slot earlier this morning.
"Me: I have already purchased a laptop but have not received it yet. Is it still possible to buy accidental damage insurance?
Agent: Yes you can purchase it once you recieve the Laptop as we need the machine Service Tag
Me: so how soon do I need to do that? As soon as I receive it?
Agent: yes"
Protect my bubble otherwise are good.

Have you tried it out yet
Seems solid enough though, no issues so far!
Still considering the ZooStorm instead, with double the RAM, proper SSD storage space, an optical drive and an IPS screen.
Was it established if the Dell one has an IPS panel?

The Zoostorm has a less capable but still excellent processor with 16GB of RAM, IPS FHD screen and a 120GB SSD on top of the 1TB hard drive - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4453282.htm - I'd get 10% off the list price too.
Does anyone know if Zoostorm builds are any good?
do you need to overclock to get the 3.5ghz speed? and how is that process done? also does doing the risk cpu burn out and invalidate warranty?
thanks
EDIT: guys I really wouldn't bother checking the tracking of your order.. It's so inaccurate.. Mine was marked as dispatched today - live chat told me it was dispatched on 16th October..
I was considering getting this or ASUS X555LA 15.6" (from PC World).
EDIT: currently in China..
EDIT: Will let you know my dispatch/delivery date as soon as I get an email from sales rep although I did order this laptop was it was on 16 heat.
I'll buy the m.2 ssd as you suggested then when I receive laptop create a back up of the op system saved to 32gb usb. Then install ssd reboot bios to usb and save to new drive, am I on the right track? Will I invalidate my Dell guarantee, thanks
MZHPV128HDGM-00000 - 128GB Samsung SM951, M.2 (22x80) PCIe 3.0 (x4) AHCI SSD, MLC NAND, Read 2000MB/s, Write 600MB/s, 90k/70k IOPS £67.
Being hm170 chipset I would assume nvme is supported by default.
Looks perfect for me ;]
So I will order that low configuration model and bay on ebay/shop 8GB RAM, M.2 Drive, and one SSD dive ;]
Don't need touch-screen and 4k display which works very bad in laptops size 15.6
Next promo-code and this laptop can be my Christmas gift ;]
For HOME users have Windows 10 Home 64-bit English
For BUSINESS have Windows 10 PRO 64-bit English
Check difference:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HyperX-Impact-SODIMM-Notebook-Memory/dp/B00KQCOTCM
There is only ONE slot for RAM. :disappointed:
You cannot upgrade memory.
If you need more RAM choose more expensive model, with two slots.
8GB Single Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (8GBx1)
16GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (8GBx2)
Usually laptops have dual channel..... I will ask service support..
I know it costs nearly double for the same internals (except HDD) but does anyone think the compact size and premium finish warrants the extra cost?
http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/xps-15-9550-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC
The InfinityEdge display looks great, but thats really the only feature you're getting. The £1099 model has less VRAM and an i5 processor compared to the £749 Inspiron.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks for posting OP
Thanks for posting.
Still awaiting for next promo code ;]
Model base - Inspiron 15, 7559 with different configuration, so this is the same model/design just some changes with hardware. I think you can bay M.2 driva and ADD to motherboard.
You don't need replace 1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive.
Also you can bay M.2 driva and replace 1TBHHD with any other 2.5 SSD
I would like to bay this standard Inspiron 15 7559 and upgrade with 128MB M.2 and replace 1TB to SSD.
Unfortunately there is only Single Channel DDR3L for me this is enough.
I don't play with game need laptop for work and I like good hardware so don't want just cheep laptop.
Before I found this dell Inspiron I almost 'click' bay MSI GS60 6QE(Ghost Pro)-063UK. ;]
P.S.: Forgot to add that the laptop does come with an M.2 type 2280 slot
1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive + 8GB Embedded Flash Cache
You can bay Samsung SM951 128GB M.2 PCI-e ACHI SSD for £67.98 Inc VAT
4k display it's not good for laptop read any review about it.
So this cheep model with M.2 SSD without 4K display can be similar to high model just without 16 GB RAM :disappointed:
Do you really need 16GB?
Discount expired but Dell usually will have next discount soon us always have.
good to see people getting prices as low as £690-700 on the base model. don't forget the GET DEAL link will not take you to the deal, copy the link in description. share the deal and let people know that they may need to have a quick chat session with the sales rep online to negotiate a cheaper price ( seems to be working for a lot of you!)
More than happy to upgrade to another Dell so will probably go for this at some point.
Cheers OP.
Asked if he could tie the quote to my account - not an option..
In the end, I paid using my debit card - but a spare one.. So I credited the account with £700 and ordered using that.
P.S - for anyone that is curious to know when the laptop will arrive, sales rep advised me to contact them in 4 days after ordering and they can give you a date from there.
Thanks OP
30hz is no good so I went for a 2560x1440 monitor to get 60hz and it's fine.
(though occasion vertical green lines like the matrix - suggestions? Tried different hdmi cables so it not that. Graphics card driver or duff graphics card?)
Cheers
Since it has a 2.5" HDD the weight won't change much at all when replacing to SSD, only desktop 3.5" HDDs are bulky with some weight on it.
Failing that you could get 5% off student discount if you're a student which isn't too bad.
1. I was asking specifically for this laptop if it was difficult but I'm ordering it and I'll have a look
2. Asked the guy and there was 5% but it's obviously not as good as £50 off so wen't with the latter
3. I need it basically as a desktop replacement, so will probably do gaming so thanks. I meant more in terms of portability and battery life, can I replace the HDD with SSD and make it significantly lighter too or will the weight not change much?
Thanks again.
2 No
3 Overkill, even a laptop probably half this price would be overkill for "university" (browsing/office etc) unless you're doing photo/video editing/gaming
I spoke to livechat and they'll only let me use the promo code if you could send me the chat transcript of you getting it today at this price, could you please send me it that would be awesome.
Thanks
How easy is it to upgrade to an SSD for someone who has no experience doing it/making PCs?
Is there a student discount?
Do you think this is a decent laptop for university?
There is supposed to be a know issue with 2 LHS USB 3.0 ports, connection / speed / USB power - don't know about a reliable fix for this. It appears that one of the two rear SATA bays might not be SATA III compatible, only SATA II.
Says two yr warranty with asus, but some aren't keen on saveonlaptops.
Was a bit cheaper at 930 with 12GB ram recently.
Thanks
This one has 5th gen CPU, i7-5500U, 16gb ram (2x more) and AMD Radeon R7 M270 4GB DDR3.
Prices of both laptops and other specs are very similar. What would you guys about these differences ? Which one is the better choice to go with ?
Thanks
A question: why is the old 4720HQ still faster than the 6700HQ? There doesnt seem to be much power saving (45W vs 47W) so not in the same league as the U range of processors... Is it really much of an upgrade?
http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/G751JL-T7028H-ASUS-G751JL-T7028H_1841234.html
I know its more but you get:
17" screen
16 GB ram
128 SSD
CPU seems faster on http://www.cpubenchmark.net/
faster gfx 965m
This has a newer i7.

I Imagine it'd sail nicely in this setup?
Edit:
PREMIUMSALE - £50 discount on selected Inspiron 7000 series and XPS products. Offer excludes XPS 13
The selected products are the older generation so those who went on live chat and got the £50 manually applied got a deal still.
Are Dell reliable these days? I know they've improved just afraid of spending this much for something that may not last.
Also this seems very powerful not sure I even need such high specs....is there a model below etc which is cheaper but is still applicable for the discount
http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15-7559-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC
OP, I'd give you all the heat on the internet if I could.
https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/how-to-determine-the-effectiveness-of-hyper-threading-technology-with-an-application
%10 cash back for dell
As an example I have i7 3610QM and have been doing some programming which involved running the same program for a long time and basically up to 4th thread there is no slowdown, going over 4 sees you slowing down to about 80% and processor going into uncomfortable highs temperaturewise.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/30-50-100-trade-cashback-laptops-desktops-bought-from-uk-retailers-2298404
Why it's so cold i don't know. It's no HP cashback where you can send anything back but I'm sure there are qualifying items you can send them that isn't worth £100.
lol this model is actually even has better specs than Dell's own entry level alien ware machine and its couple of hundred pounds less!
If the code doesn't work, speak with an advisor on live chat and they will sort you a quote with £50 off.
Ordered mine, get it within 2 weeks!
.. Both almost identical prices. Is there much in it between the two? Thank you for any advice.
Only thing I'm worried about is Windows 10 as everything else sounds great...
Your text here
Also I have confirmed that the battery is a 6-cell one.
In any case I'm buying one!
and they may give you a discount because of this.
