This is a dashcam for people who like to fiddle about with things. It's very small indeed, only slightly bigger than a packet of Tictacs. There are many fake Mobius cams being sold on ebay so you're best to stick with a reliable vendor such as Banggood.

For anyone looking to buy a dashcam I recommend watching Techmoan's excellent reviews on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFB79814F24001328 - especially the "Beginners Guide to Dashcams".

After a lot of research I decided:

1. It is preferable to have a very small camera that will not be too noticeable from outside. If you have to keep removing it when you leave the car you'll not use it.
2. Park mode is probably not as useful as you would think and can drain your car battery.
3. Dashcam batteries may not last long due to the constant charging & recharging and exposure to excess heat in the car. A dashcam with a super capacitor instead of a battery is a much better idea.
4. Wifi on a dashcam is a useless gimmick.
5. GPS on a dashcam is a double-edged sword - it's maybe a nice feature to have but if your footage shows your insurance company you were doing 32mph in a 30mph zone it'll all be your fault in their eyes.

There is a handy Windows setup utility
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25178932&postcount=6 to adjust the settings.
You can also use their Android app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=therau2000.amcamobiusac to do the same, all you need is a 99p OTG cable and you can set it up with your phone or tablet.

The Dashcamtalk forum
https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/mobius-support-thread-and-tech-guide-post-all-problems-help-requests-here-read-posts-1-8-first.4232/ is an excellent source of help & support.

You will need a few other bits & pieces to use it as a dashcam:

Windscreen mount 99p
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131376931661?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Hardwire Car Charger Power Cable Kit £2.59

Add A Circuit adapter 99p (if you want to hard wire it)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371036262838?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=640213470802&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Cable clamps 99p
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381343316287?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Super capacitor to replace battery (optional but desirable) £6.62 on the banggood website but £3.97 using their app.
http://eu.banggood.com/Wholesale-Warehouse-Super-Capacitor-For-The-Mobius-Action-Sport-Camera-wp-Uk-918122.html

And finally, here is a guide to hard wiring your new dashcam https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/easy-method-to-hardwire-any-dashcam-no-experience-required.7712/, it's not as scary as you might think.

Just search eBay for mobius helmet mount, there is a screw part that screws into the thread on the mobius holder, remove the thread from the holder and the screw from the mount and glue or as I did araldite them together, before you do though check it where you want to put the camera and you can taylor it perfectly to your car. If you look at the photo I posted you'll see the sections I glued.

Awesome device, bought two more than a year ago. Use them as dash cams in my car, one in front, one in back. Excellent video quality. Very discrete. Can be modded in various ways, i have super capacitors installed instead of batteries and the rear dash cam is hidden after i detached the lens from the body and installed a longer lens to body cable. 10/10 would recommend.

Got one from 'eletoponline365', an eBay seller (sold over 22000 of these), about three years ago.
One of the best dash cams around, been on two cars and never gone wrong.

I was given to understand, before I bought it, that there were a few factories knocking these out in China and that this eBay seller was recommended as having the best and giving full support plus downloads.

Only had one dealing with Banggood and will not go there again.

Yep, bought one, fiddled about with it, took my car to bits to find best way of fitting it, bought some cables and adapters from China, got it to work. But still looked like a carbuncle in my car, so then tossed it into a cupboard.
Great idea, but being a pedant, I hate anything that looks non-standard fit in my car.
Does take some good images though. Going cheap, if anyone interested!!

These are good, I got one a month ago from Banggood. Reasonably discreet, and good quality. There was a discount code "NewUK" I think it was which gave 8% off, not sure if this still works.

eletoponline365 is actually also the maker of this camera as far as I know.
I have two of these cameras in the family cars and they are brilliant, if positioned with some thought they are invisible from the outside.
I actually bought my two Möbius cameras from Banggood and chose the uk warehouse so had them delivered within 4 days.

Its pretty easy to run the 12v cable around the interior trim of the car which I did with both front and rear cameras. Ford 12v sockets are always on so can be left running when parked.

You are correct the g1w is a big dash camera but the Möbius is tiny in comparison.
I have 2 Möbius permantly mounted and virtually invisible in my family cars but I also own a g1w that I use in my taxi because I llike to have the screen on display whilst I'm working so passengers think they could also be getting recorded.
The Möbius takes very good night footage but the g1w takes fantastic unbeleivable night recording.
Anyone who's interested in buying a dashcam should look on YouTube at 'techmoans' reviews of many dashcams including the two mentioned here.

Good tip for mounting these in your car, don't buy the car mount, get the helmet mount instead. Cut off the strap and hack saw the hooks that the strap is attached to, this mount gets the camera not only closer to the windscreen to reduce glare, it's also not as bulky. Got 2 of these in the wife's car and 1 in mine, brilliant little cameras.
There are however copies of these knocking about and said above eletoponline365 is actually the manufacturer of these units.

I did consider getting these before but why oh why does it have to look like a cheap alarm fob from a late 80's XR3i
Don't get me wrong it means the average turd thinks it's not worth stealing. It just means it looks like it's not worth owning. Though if I bought one they'd think it was my garage door opener and trash the car anyway.

Another mounting tip for this excellent little camera, I bought a magnetic phone holder

http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/171726495803

I stuck the larger magnet to the underside of my rear view mirror, and the smaller magnet to the holder, and it allows quick release of the camera if needed from the car, but also quick to put back.
rporteo
14 Oct 15 #33
But then does the charging wire not dangle in the way?
chrisbenwalker
14 Oct 15 #34
No, I bought a 3 metre right angled cable and ran it round my windscreen and down the side of the rear view mirror. Totally invisible around the windscreen and can't see it from outside the car.
rporteo
14 Oct 15 #35
So you can't see it from inside the car? I'd have thought you would see the camera and cable if it's attached to the underside of your rear view mirror?
chrisbenwalker
14 Oct 15 1 #36
I didn't say you couldn't see if from inside the car. I said couldn't see it from outside. The windscreen has a black surround around the rear view mirror, and with glare etc it's just not visible.
Inside the car, yes you can see it, but only when look for it, it sits in front of the mirror itself. Very discreet, but I guess it depends on the car/mirror design.
The cable is totally invisible as it is tucked away round the windscreen lining, and then down under the carpet.

I'm after a decent light camera for my syma x8c as I'll be using it in conjunction with my 50g fpv kit and want to keep under 100g payload. Gopro, Xiaomi and sjcam will be too heavy with mount so this or the 808 #16? Might try bespoke and see what come back with, rather avoid banggood / gearbest / DX et al.

17 Oct 15 1 #46
If you look for the camera and the cable you will see it until it disappears behind the interior surfaces. If someone wanted to go looking for it, they would find it, but when you are driving, you should not be distracted by the camera or any dangling wires. Check the links and the techmoan website as mentioned in dwl99's posting to findout how to do it and how it would look. My g1w is mostly hidden behind the rearview mirror, although not from any passengers and the passenger can see about 2 inches of wire going up into the roof where the wire follows the window seals round to the glove compartment and under the passenger seat before popping up in the cigarette lighter. I leave my two g1w's in the car all the time. I think they look cheap enough that no one would break into the car to check. They hardly look like a 4k TV or an iPad and for five years with cameras I've not been broken into.

This is mine, So yes can see it from inside, but not outside. Unless go right up to car and look up for it, but is mostly hidden behind the rear view mirror. From the front of the car it can't be seen.
The flash pronounces the camera here as it was dark! But it really is discreet in the car.
The camera sits in the supplied bracket , I just superglued the smaller magnet to the bracket and the main magnet sits on the wing mirror holder. Just bought the magnet off eBay, link earlier in this thread. If need to re-use the bracket some other way after Glueing , they can be bought cheaply enough, about £3...
chrisbenwalker
17 Oct 15 #48
Agree. These things look so cheap, in some ways that's an advantage. A transcend 200 would never stay on a windscreen for long before being nicked. Hence why I didn't buy one, it wouldn't have got used as would keep forgetting to take it out with me and would not have been used for short journeys. The g1ws aren't as discreet as these, but look cheap enough.

My mobius stays on recording every journey.

I'm confused about dash cams! Can someone please advise me? I'm going to get my BF one for Xmas, he doesn't know much about them either but said about this one
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=306753&productId=991021&storeId=10001

Mostly because we have a Halfords locally who can also fit it for £30. Budget is only £100 and he hates cables showing so would need to be neat. Also, he says it doesn't matter, but I don't think he will use it if he has to remember to put it in/turn it on.

Which is best please?

The Mobius is much, much smaller than this one. Even if it's only 15 quid the fact that it's much more visible from outside the car probably increases the risk of some scrote smashing a window to nick it.

Lots of people don't search new deals, just hot ones. The new deals can sometimes take a while to get going I guess, and some get missed. I only found it by searching mobius to see if any deals had been posted, as was thinking of getting another for the rear of my car, and it was only at 80 degrees. Once on the hot pages, more people see the deal. I also don't think many might know how good these can be, I didn't until I bought mine a couple of months ago, hence the prompt for discussion once started gaining heat.....

chrisbenwalker
18 Oct 15 1 #77
Not really, I guess it depends on the type of rear view mirror you have. For me it worked well as is pretty flat. The wide angle lens covers a decent field of view too anyway. My biggest concern was if it was safe to use a magnet, but having researched it, it was fine, a bit of a misconception that magnets and electronics don't go together. Now if talking a CRT TV, things would be very different!!
jaydeeuk1
18 Oct 15 #78
Are you using the blade protectors? I was hoping the difference between this and the crappy stock cam (approx 20g) would be negligible, I might have to rethink things then. How have you mounted yours? I was considering 3m tape on top, or stick foam inbetween the camera and body to reduce jello and use underneath for the FPV cam. I bought the syma x5 FPV kit which looks about as light as you can get for the price, not received it yet. I've seen videos of people flying gopros and yi cams about with mounts ok which are heavier than the mobius and fpv cam combined.

Edit - noticed its also 3.7v, might be able to tap in to the FPV cam battery, should save a good chunk of weight.

You did well with that price. I'm tempted to get another for the rear and maybe hard wire both.
Someone on here asked if a magnet is ok to hold one of these with them being an electronic device, and yes they are fine. It's a mobile phone holder as well after all.

Just make sure you glue (or similar) the smaller magnet to the bracket that the camera sits in. That way the camera can still be taken out of its holder, and also available to replace for £3 on eBay if needed.

Mine's arrived (ordered Monday from UK warehouse at £43.79). Minimally packed, with no box but a protective foam plastic shell. Passes the visual checks for genuine article as you'd expect, and the lights come on.

Yup, how much you thinking? If you don't like the way it looks there is a way to make it look like a GoPro using a lens extender and a case.
I run mines off battery, the 850mah one. I get 4 commutes out of mine

Bought mine for about £25 3 years ago after an incident with a HGV ! Need to update it, may just order at this price, I like the small profile of the camera & the reviews seem good

Thanks OP, £41.84 if ordering via the app (new customer) - £43.43 with 1st class delivery.

I see the Super Capacitor is OOS. Anyone running this OK as a dash cam with just the standard batteries ?

Update - ordered capacitor from US warehouse where it's in stock.

I bought the super capcitor shortly after I bought the camera, and I've never looked back, as it works a treat.

I have had one of these cameras for about a year now. I fitted it in my car just behind the rear view mirror, and fed the usb cable behind the lining etc to a double usb socket. I put a 32gb card in it and just let it record over and over, and only take it out if I wanted to view any footage on my pc.
In my view it is a very good little camera, is unobtrusive and does what I want it to do.

Ditto, I take my laptop to the car to download.

Just make sure that the USB cable can transmit, not just supply the power.

Looking to buy this but have a couple of questions.

Does it have motion detection?

What's the battery life like? Can I possible run it off a power bank??

Thanks.

anyone recommend a decent sized micro sd card for this? i have one but every time i play back my files on media player they don't play. I do have a cheap 64gb in it at the moment and wondering if its because of this
paulandpam1 to king132
4 Nov 15 #100
Download VLC player and they will work.
If they don't play you could try reformatting the sd card inside the Mobius by following the instructions here http://www.mytempfiles.info/mobius/MobiusManual.pdf I use the recommended class 4 Kingston cards that the manufacturer recommends without any problems.
dwl99 to king132
4 Nov 15 #101
If you got your 64GB SD card on ebay or Amazon marketplace it's very probably a fake
paulandpam1 to king132
4 Nov 15 #102
As the comment above states your sd card may also be fake.
download H2testw and test it.

Are there any recommended mounts (UK based if possible), for the windscreen ?

I cant seem to find a UK equivalent - only the sucker version which is a lot more bulky:

C. The narrow field of view also gives the best night time results.

Should one be choosing a specific currency for checkout to get the best prices?
dwl99 to alexjameshaines
8 Nov 15 1 #113
Depends a bit on whether your card issuer has a competetive exchange rate or hidden fees
John Mason
8 Nov 15 1 #114
Just a note on point 5 of the original post. Speed can be calculated just be looking at the footage noting the time taken to cover the distance between to fixed points at the side of the road so not having the speed recorded by the camera is no protection.

23 Nov 15 1 #119
Tip - if using the Super Capacitor, make sure you change the option "Power off Disconnect" to "Immediate" - otherwise the recording wont save.

Just spent the last 45 mins wondering why this wouldn't work !!

Cheers

Got mine last week and have hard wired it in as a dash cam. Is the super capacitor needed?
Also what settings have you used for the camera, mine at night tends show high glares on lighting.
ChrisUK
23 Nov 15 #121
It's recommended if using as a dash cam to use a super capacitor instead of the battery pack.

I've read through everything, SO MUCH INFORMATION!

Sorry if I missed it but....

Can I buy the cam and a mount and just use it on my journeys with its built in battery and/or use a sat nav charger to keep it on for longer journeys and just remove it from the vehicle overnight etc?
paulandpam1 to cache
4 Dec 15 1 #124
Yes to all the questions.
Obviously if your using it on battery alone you will have to switch it on manually and it will work for about 60+ minutes between charges. If you using your satnav charger make sure it is a Mini usb connection and not a Micro usb.
In the camera settings program you can have it to switch on and off recording automatically when power is applied or removed.
