I'd estimate that I print around a third or a quarter of my total at around 5% coverage but the most of the rest would be around 10% in general which might be a better figure for them to start using as that is more like a full page of text.

I find the base on 5% per page ridiculous by the manufacturers to superboost their cartridge page counts. Who realistically only print 5% coverage on average regularly? So take it with a pinch of salt or as a loose guide.
Realistically you can't rely on them printing that many pages, only use the figures to compare cartridge sizes to get a price per page indication.

Yep, have had a new compatible spill 24K pages worth of toner in a Hp M602 - wrecked the fuser. My mistake, although ive since learned who to trust and not trust for compatibles. I stick with reputable sites who offer no quibble replacement if something goes wrong, even when you're 12K pages into a 24K toner. Usually it's better quality toner anyway that sticks on paper under high loads (unlike some cheaper alternatives). Also, if you're buying a printer to use with compatibles make sure there are a few alternative sites to buy from. Plenty of newer models with rubbish compatibles (I.e. For the Hp m476nw)

Should come with one, but often the starter toners are usually small, I'd guess about 1000 pages at most.
All laser printers quote a estimated page yield on a toner cartridge based on the idea that the 5% of the page is printed to. What you actually get depends what you print. 1 word on page and you'll get a lot more pages, a dark photograph and you'll get less.

Hence my comment about original or copy...
My experience is clones tend to fail earlier than genuine ones do, but yes you pay more for the original cart than a copy. I've also have clones fail a few times and spew toner over the printers (hateful job to clean toner power), whereas originals have always been fine, I assume lesser QA and quality. That said I would not be trying to fix a sub £150 printer with a toner leak, these were big colour lasers when they were multi thousands to buy and then someone saves a few quid buying cheap toner than then caused lots of issues......
Official HP high capacity are £132 for 6.9K of pages at 5% from HP or £99 from Cartragesave. Clones start at £30 or so.
Dell hi capacity are £136 from Dell but 10K of pages. Originals are £108 form Cartidgesave Clones start at £62.
Other cartridge sellers may be cheaper, or do better deals, I've just used cartridgesave before and had no issues.

The HP cartridges are cheaper but smaller capacity. assuming the standard 5% coverage and the carts do have the life you expect the dell works out slightly cheaper per page. Of course that depend on how cheap the carts are and if they are genuine or copie carts. If you get a discount all bets are off.

That's funny, I was looking at 50ish or so, for 2 HP cartridges, stated 13.8K pages, vs 1 Dell at 45 or so, for 10K pages....What figures where you using...

On a similar note, I got the Dell 1765 last year and have never looked back. (refills £20 for a full set)
Laser v Inkjet is a no brainer. Plenty of online printers if you want a photo for the wall, but for home use and kids homework etc these are a bargain
Opening post
Got to be a bargain Selling at over £240 elsewhere and £300 on Dell website

More expensive, but replacement cartridges are cheaper....
Also, slightly, only slightly, more aesthetic.

If brother even do offer a cashback on Laser printers again this is going to be a steal !
I usually melt a hole in the cartridge and add toner and have been using this method for years.
