From what I've read, the issue stems from certain rechargeable batteries. I've used several types of rechargeable batteries and have noticed eneloops seem to be a touch bigger and sometimes are a very tight fit. it may just be a case that the rechargeables that people have use don't fit the battery box well. The battery box is just part of the standard Lego power functions so the issue shouldn't just be limited to this particular set.
This is a fab set but I bought an extension pack last year to make the track longer. 1 year on my 8 year old still gets it out most weekend. We bought the station as an addition christmas gift too.
