The undamaged part will probably be a problem with HP laptops since they seem to fall apart fairly easily.

Hi, I've got an XP machine which currently runs windows 7. I've moved over all my files on to my external storage the only issue is if I format the hard drive i will lose the OS and the drivers etc? I can't find my windows XP disc either not sure what to do. Thanks

Thanks OP. Bought the same laptop and cheekily used the 10% code, added a mouse to get it to £610, it's been a few weeks but just had confirmation that my 2008 Dell XP desktop has just saved me another £300, so a quality, and I mean top quality laptop for £310. My old laptop is going to Laptops Direct to get £150, so hopefully, £160 to swap, billy bargain.
I've just found an old Fujitsu laptop in a cupboard, now if that powers on who knows what could happen next....

thanks - the probook comes with windows 7 64 bit preloaded and a windows 8.1 on DVDs.
I probably do want to go to Windows 10 (can I use the windows 8.1 key on the DVD?) but I'm looking for the most painless way to put it on the laptop with all the HP drivers. Saying that though I have an MSDN subscription so can download any version directly. Also this laptop does come with a bit of HP bloatware which I would rather not have.
The reason I was considering upgrading the RAM was mainly due to games, something as simple as Minecraft was not as smooth as I liked. Other tests I did were only playing at 30fps.

29 Oct 15#99
Just do an upgrade from WITHIN Windows 8.1 using the Windows 10 installer
(Be sure to choose 64 bit and Windows 10 PRO assuming you have a Pro version of 8.1).
Once you have successfully upgraded Windows 8.1,then you can do a clean Windows 10 install via USB stick. The Windows 10 licence key is tied to the device and is held in Microsoft server's - so you don't ever need to worry about losing the Windows key.
As for the graphics issues - I've no idea what may be causing those. Minecraft is fairly resource intensive though if memory serves....so it may just be a tricky game to run without a dedicated graphics card.

Just disconnect the mechanical hard drive and load Windows to the M2 SSD. Then once Windows is installed, stick the old mechanical drive back in.
You shouldn't be getting lag with normal video playback - regardless of whether you have 1 stick of RAM or 2 installed. For reference, I have an Atom Z3740 tablet that plays back 4K videos without a glitch....
Check your drivers etc. Better still, upgrade to Windows 10.
(Is there any reason why you are still using Windows 8.1?)
acer77
29 Oct 15#96
Thanks for the info - I was considering the RAM upgrade as well because I read that the integrated HD 5500 graphics is using the main system RAM and having two sticks allows it run in dual channel mode. Playing games and viewing video on this I found it a bit laggy.
For the M2 SSD do you just connect it change the BIOS to boot off it? Also do you use the windows 8.1 media to install the OS onto it directly?
wenttoabetterplace
29 Oct 15#95
Don't worry about the RAM. Just upgrade to an SSD.

I actually bought that Intel one from Dabs for a client. Cracking bit of kit (though the screen isn't much to write home about!).
I would always choose Intel personally. AMD are behind the curve in performance/power consumption. Intel Core laptops also have better resale value.
To determine which processor is better, just do a Google search with 'AMD processor name VS Intel Core i3-5010U CPU BOSS'.
You will then get a link comparing the processors, with benchmarking scores etc.
Obviously factor in buying a full size SSD (or an M2 42mm SSD which this laptop supports). Don't stick with the mechanical drive....or if you do, just use it for data storage. The setup I sorted for my client included an M2 42mm SSD as the OS drive + the 500GB mechanical hard drive.

Cracking bit of kit that will cost £179.99 after cashback. (£199.99 for those buying now). It has a spare M2 SSD slot, a fingerprint scanner, brilliant build quality, runs silent and cool...and has a superb keyboard/touchpad.

I bought an HP 840 G2 recently and just got the cash back. So it cost me £348 in the end. The laptop is really good. So good I'll only ever buy HP business laptops in the future.
It's totally silent and so comfy to use. Lightweight. The back just slides off to get at the internals. It has 3 years warranty, including the battery! The battery lasts 6-10 hours, comes with win 7, a win 8 instillation disk, minimal bloatware. An backlit keyboard. up to date i5, enough ram. The screen is nice and the laptop looks good. And it's pretty quick in use.
For £348 this is amazing. It's over £600 original price was fair for it. Yeah you can get some consumer grade crap for less, marketing bs features, but having gone through owning a good number of them, never again. This includes a top of the range Dell Inspiron for £650 which was just a nightmare in every way. A £450 Lenovo that went bust at 12 months. A £300 Toshiba that was horribly slow to use, which also went bang after 10 months. Another £350 Lenovo that was majorly faulty after 1 month. And all these laptops were made to sound and look good on paper. They all had shoddy build quality, with cut corners in all sorts of areas.
interesting..... i have an old aspire one 10" notebook which sounds like it'll qualify.
its not worth £100 real world so is it worth the hassle of upgrading it when i just want rid.......hmm....decisions

It doesn't actually need to have xp installed on it as I had done a secure wipe of the drive. I also listed myself as a sole trader under company name on the form and was accepted with no issues. I also was able to claim an extra 50 for the model I bought which was a probook 455 i3. Effectively got it for 200 quid. It's well worth doing. You can get an old xp machine off ebay for a few quid.

It is a bargain though. Just such a shame it's a 1366x768 screen.
I have just bought this for a client;

Cracking bit of kit that will cost £179.99 after cashback. (£199.99 for those buying now). It has a spare M2 SSD slot, a fingerprint scanner, brilliant build quality, runs silent and cool...and has a superb keyboard/touchpad.
This is big boys stuff - not the consumer nonsense that will be tomorrow's landfill. £179 for a modern i3 professional grade laptop. Bargain
Edit: Confusing much?

And it can certainly be used for a business which will be valid for some.
