Thanks OP, ordered with 10% off too.
Quick question - Distance between screen & projector (throw) will be 4.5m. Which projector can anyone recommend for my room?

The Optoma HD141X that I bought (for a 120" screen) has a throw distance of between 4m 49cm up to 4.92cm if my calcs are correct (1.48 to 1.62 ratio). I think the Optoma HD26 is the same... (slightly better picture but poorer lag if gaming is a concern).

Before you buy a projector do your homework on throw ratios. It will help you decide what to buy to maximize the result in your particular room. I currently use a GT720 which throws 120" 16:9 from about 2 metres away. Will upgrade the resolution only when this projector fails. Very happy for now.

Yeah good advice, only figured this out once I really started looking into a projector - it's probably the first thing you should look at - ahead of res, contrasts, etc.
My HD141X has about 2ft of play in the throw distance but just happened to be perfect at around 13ft for 120in for my room. After having it up and running for a few weeks I have to say I'm delighted with both the screen and the projector! Watching films & gaming (PS4) has been brilliant. I did have an old surround system which had a built in amp in the sub but had no optical or HDMI inputs so bought a neat little £28 optical to RCA adaptor which works really well: ESYNiC Digital to Analogue
Whole lot cost me just under £500 - frankly amazed as when I started out I didn't think I'd even get a decent projector for that!

Hi safskool, just PM'd you with pics of my setup - I didn't hang it from the ceiling but the link in wayne post (#34) to his ebay purchase has pictures of hooks you could use...

Screen arrived home yesterday and I'm very impressed! Solid build quality and smooth screen that takes about 50secs to extend & retract. Just need my projector home now...!

Hey niknak,
How did you fit the screen in? Did you hang it from the ceiling with hooks? If so, what hooks did you use? I've located my ceiling joists, just not sure what hooks to get!

Looks impressive! This is my first attempt at a home cinema setup so doing as cheap as possible and a hd141x & 120" motorised screen all delivered for about £470 is under my budget (for once!). Could see upgrades like your screen in future though...!

I did have a quick look at Amazon Italy but not sure about returns. I have ordered from Amazon Spain before and it was fine (really quick delivery too!). Never knew about the Curiua site though - very handy. The Italian one is cheaper at the moment at £379.71. Hmm over £45 cheaper... ooh choices! Oh heck lets go for it. Amazon Italy order placed. Once I get the screen & projector home I'll post a pic and review it.

oh, also, richer sounds sell it for the same price as amazon (UK) so if a cheap extended warranty is what you want, you may be better off with them

i was looking at the amazon warehouse return units, but i ended up ordering a new hd141x last week from amazon.de, cost me £381.72 inc shipping (bought it on my halifax clarity, so no euro conversion fees). arrived on thursday.
compare different amazon prices at https://www.curiua.com/dp/B00M2YDBXK
(i originally ordered from amazon.it, but cancelled after i checked the next day, and the german one had dropped in price so was cheaper...)

I stuck in a request to Flubit & Barclay's Bespoke last night on Amazon's price for the HD141x (£449.99). Both came back with prices from box.co.uk, Flubit was £434.99 but Barclay's was £425.25. Think I'll bite on that as even the Amazon Warehouse ones are £408.99 so for £17 extra I'm guaranteed a new one.

Might sound like a stupid question but how is this powered? Do you need to connect it to main or can you use batteries?
nikc0069 to BeerGoggles
17 Oct 15#27
it is mains. there is also a hack over on a forums somewhere to add a small relay in veiling so it can be triggered with a 12 volt trigger. I'm personally using an ikea tupplur blind which is super cheap and produces decent results. you can motorised them too for 60 squids.

I have wanted a projector for a while as our living room is 20' long so sitting at the back 42" TV is just too small. My brother has an Epson projector and 90 something inch screen and it looks awesome with bluerays or playing skyrim 1080p settings all maxed. We put blackout blinds in our living room when we redecorated last year just in case :-) But a TV will cope better with light in daytime and no messing around with mounting which will be a nightmare... Decisions decision. The HD141x is on my shortlist though, have spent some hours window shopping online.

Good plan but now I've bought the screen I can't wait to get a projector! Decided to go Optoma HD141x as it's the cheapest of the ones I was looking at but not a massive difference in specs/performance but the real selling point for it is the cables (power/HDMI/etc) come out the left side of the projector rather than the rear. I've got an old mantle piece I'm setting it on an it's only just wide enough!

Thanks for the good feedback folks on the projectors, might just have a look at those Epson's too AJ92. The 3 I mentioned have what seems like low lag for gaming, Perfect throw distances for 120" screen and decent picture quality for hopefully(!) sub £500 but as being a HotUKdeal'er I'm looking for sub £400 before biting!!!

Black Friday? I'm either looking for a good 55" TV or Projector. Struggling to pick though, worried about cool downs and trouble fitting a projector (low ceiling and real tricky fitting 100/120" screen in our cottage). Have a budget in mind of up to £700 but think the deals on the day will make the call.
Good deal, heat added!

I have this exact screen coupled with my Optima 141X and for the money they are both awesome. Easy to put up but would suggest not trying to install in your own as this thing is seriously long but overall performance is excellent from all sources, Apple TV, Freeview and streaming.

Make sure you use appropriate fixings with these screens - they're quite heavy! Very good price and I've read many people getting stunning results from basic painted walls so I would think these would be suitable for all but the most fussy people.

I had mine projected on a grey wall and it worked pretty well and was still bright. so any plain flat surface will do. if you have a coloured wall you can adjust your colour balance on the projector to compensate.
I now have an excellent screen i got of ebay used market and it a must have (that plus surround sound is also a must)

I've been looking at this exact screen (from Amazon) for a while to go with a bargain Acer projector I picked up a while ago for a paltry sum. My current screen is manual and not great (but hey it was free). Lots of good reviews but I'd be very interested in anyone's feedback that purchases this. Is thinking of putting this in the conservatory along the join between the roof and windows, anyone done this already? Drilling into the metal framework concerns me slightly though as I'm almost certain that it would invalidate the warranty on the conservatory

I bought one of these recently with a Optoma 141x. Never had a home projector or screen before so can't compare, but I think it is awesome.
It is so good being motorised and is really simple to fix to the wall or ceiling.

after using a cheap (manual drop down) screen for the last few weeks, i'm *so* glad i stumped up the extra and went for a tab tensioned screen.... theres a bit on the right hand side of my current temporary screen that is bowed in a bit, and while most of the time i dont notice it, when i do, it is really annoying!
