Not sure what to do with your older teen this half-term and you know they'll be bored, run up household bills, use you as a taxi service, want to stay out late with mates....it'll be cheaper to pay £50 for an activity week and you may even be able to get it for free!
Half-term activity week for 16-17-year-olds £50/free Register online for hundreds of places across England & NI.
All food & accommodation costs are includes.
They run this programme in the summer so if you miss out, there is always next year.
Details:
England & NI
The half-term break is looming and if you want to get your teenager doing something fun and productive, you can send them on a one-week activity programme (including a 3-night trip away) and 30 hours voluntary work in the community. It’s £50 or free for some.
It's part of the National Citizen Service programme backed by the Government and participants will get a certificate signed by the Prime Minister at a graduation ceremony.
You need to live in England or Northern Ireland and your child must be aged 16 or 17 at the time of the trip. It doesn't matter if they are at school or not, but if they've been on a National Citizen Service programme before, they unfortunately can't go again.
There are hundreds of places available and the programmes will take place during the dates of your local area's half-term break. NCS has told us that due to the programme’s popularity, most areas are nearing capacity but spaces are still available, so go quick if you want it. You must book in advance. All food, transport, activities and accommodation is included.
What's involved?
Phase 1: For the first part of half-term week teens will stay away at an outdoor activity centre for 3 nights and 4 days, participating in outdoor activities such as abseiling, water rafting and canoeing.
Phase 2: For the second part of half-term week teens will live at home whilst continuing to meet up for 3 days, learning new skills including presentation, teamwork and leadership, while also finding out more about the needs of their local community.
Phase 3: In the third and final phase, teens will continue to work together for 30 hours across evenings and weekends, devising and delivering a social action project of their choice.
How to apply
Enter your details on the National Citizen Service registration page (parents or teenagers can fill it out) and it will contact you to explain more. Register as soon as possible - once the places are gone, they're gone. You can also call the centre directly on 02034764400.
Can't afford it?
If you have a low income or are receiving certain benefits, you may be able to get it free with a bursary - you can find out more once registered.
Feedback from previous programmes:

"Teenagers need opportunities to shine, and that’s exactly what NCS gave my daughter" - Sharon
"The change has been wonderful; it’s something that a parent only hopes to witness, their child growing into a better person." - Dawn

Pay £50 to 30 hours voluntary work? How does that work then? Who else pays to go to work?

It costs substantially more than £50 in most cases but the government picks up the tab because it's subsidised. The receivers of the voluntary work are not paying anyone for it, there is no 'angle' on this besides encouraging young people to better themselves and help them stand out in a crowded jobs market.

Morning All,
Although I wouldn't just call it an activity week it is a great opportunity to get involved and for a maximum of £50 you can't argue with that! Good for the CV, guaranteed interviews with certain companies, personal statement for universities, good examples for interviews, create new friends and become more aware of community issues through social action.
You've popped in that there is a summer programme, but there is also a spring programme that can run in February half term or Easter holidays. Just remember when they/you turn 18 you are no longer eligible!

I've watched a presentation by the NCS team and they are really passionate about what they do. I would recommend any young person to get involved with this as it's great value with just £50 payable even if it costs more than that to run.
Their CV will be boosted for applying for apprenticeships and jobs, plus their personal statement for uni will pack a punch with NCS on there!
