hmmmmm cycling. another 1 of my 'shall I give it a go' moments until again I realise I had a life and no time this nonsense. Don't get me wrong. it's a great hobby if you have no job, nothing to do., and play video games until the early hours of the morning..... But, when you have a life then it's the last thing you'd want to do xxxxxxxxxxxx

"Just clocked the word 'cyclist'. Explains it all really, stuck up **** who's never worked a day in his life, wears lycra by day, plays video games by night hahaha, everyone hates cyclists mate"
and yet here you are, on about buying a bike?!?!?! I just don't get it, surely this would be a little hypocritical? Just sayin

If you want to get the best from you and your bike then yes, get clipless pedals, look for shimano spd sl or spd MTB pedals and you would need shoes that are compatible with the cleats

I ordered at about 20 minutes past midnight, still free delivery and payment taken. Had a phone call on Saturday at 12:30pm to ask my height and to confirm that I had ordered the right size, told that bike was on it's way. Received the same email as everybody else yesterday afternoon offering the Defy 4. Yes a good price but still £75 more than my original spend, which was already a stretch.
Has anybody received their bike yet? I'm not too impressed to be honest.

Interesting to see how this pans out. Clearly they didn't expect the dealt to be as popular but still.
Don't think I'm tempted with their counter offer. I'm really only looking for a starter bike to get me 10 minutes down the road each day so splurging £350 on that seems excessive. Just dont want to end up with an Apollo![/quote]
To be honest, if you did buy the giant then the residual value will be better than most bikes of that price, keep in mind the price offered is substantially less than its being sold for at most places

The 2016 defy 4 seems identical to the 2015 5 defy except for the composite fork, guessing that's a mix of carbon and aluminium, so not a full carbon fork. Don't think I'd be tempted with that offer to be fair

Didn't pull the trigger last night. Thought I would go down my local Giant store and see if they could price match. They had one for £399 but only xs left. Went to order this and £300 with delivery so bought from Rutland Cycles with 3.15% TopCashBack, although I forgot to add HAVE6 to get it for 287. Still was cheaper than this and feel quite strongly that they would not get my business after the £25 delivery added after adding so voting cold...

hi Paul, if you are using on canal paths probably better with a hybrid as it will be a bit rough the terrain admits easier to handle if your in an upright position, also a good idea to put slight wider tyres on your hybrid to tackle bumps and holes. I have a road bike, hybrid and mountain bike, and general short distances on mixed terrain I always use my hybrid as it's the best of both worlds.... hope this helps a little

Very similar specs but the Boardman has carbon forks. The whole 'carbon fibre' thing is chucked around as a selling point, but is pointless. The only time carbon fibre is good is when the frame of the bike is designed to be as aerodynamic as possible - in which case aluminium has low structural integrity at these shapes and so carbon fibre is better ... OR for CF forks. CF forks however are a worthwhile upgrade because they carry less vibrations and your arms will feel more comfortable on a rigid ride, for a relatively low cost (compared to a good full CF frame).
The gears are exactly the same, the brakes are a slightly different model but I doubt its perceivable (same line), same pedals, similar frame design. The Vittoria tires that the Boardman has are highish rated mid-range and i'm not sure about the Giant custom tyres.
TL;DR - All in all, its basically the same bike but the Giant is £105 cheaper (£20 with Halfords this weekend on the Boardman makes it £105 rather than £125). The carbon fibre forks are the only upgrade and while probably noticeable on long bumpy commutes we're not talking 'night and day'.

Fantastic deal. Amazed to see a great bargain at Tri UK. They are a local store to me and the few times I've been in everything was just about maximum price. Lovely store though and great knowledge. Giant frame manufacturing is just about the most advanced in the world using the latest robot welding and other processes. I think they make frames for other brands or used to but you are guaranteed to get a Giant frame if you buy a Giant bike.
Also on Tri Uk is the Giant Avail 5 2015 down from £499 to £299 which looks a similar bike but in white. Female geometry possibly.
Looks like a nice bike for the price. Good entry level road bike. Haven't had a Giant, but they seem to have a good rep. Biggest selling brand of bikes in the UK I think.
