Asda used to be free refills. not sure when they stopped, but used to get free refills with my papa who died over 15 years ago

I remember this as he used to refil before leaving and take it home for the next day. cars back then didn't have cup holders though, so he got one which slotted into the window, your couldn't wind the window up with it in though as our would fall out!

Always seeing people in Subway help themselves to a jug of pop on their way out - always thought they were just blagging it while the staff were too busy. Worth remembering perhaps for a hot day.

The new store at Gillingham Pier, it seems they advertise the fact that there are free refills. It's just a bit strange that some stores do offer them and others do NOT.

How is this a deal?

cicobuff to stevenhp1987
22 Oct 15 1 #15
It's not a deal, it has been posted in freebies. Clearly the OP had no idea like some others in the thread that Subway did this. So it is a heads up for those that do not know.

I personally do know, and know that you are being a pedant.
niggardly to stevenhp1987
24 Oct 15 1 #81
Because there is no heads up section on the website. I was unsure, I thought it was (and possibly is) store specific because many stores are franchised.
cicobuff
22 Oct 15 1 #16
Some stores I have been in actually put a notice up on their machine stating words to the effect of 'Only one refill per customer' or 'Refills for customers who purchase food + drink'. It is down the discretion of the franchise.
preecey to cicobuff
22 Oct 15 1 #30
That's correct.

Some franchises in my area only allow refills on their large cups, not the regular ones.
dalipsinghno1
22 Oct 15 3 #17
This can't be right if it's free in one Asda's store and not other, and you were made to feel shame is not right. I think Asda's HQ must take note and change this policy either allow in all stores or not at all.

Just imagine if lewis_fox goes to Stock on Tees or Thornaby stores and helps himself and he/she is paraded through the store at the back in front of all the shoppers, um "What did he do" Staff "He refilled his cup of tea"!!!

can't imagine that. So the unknown Lewis thinks all stores allow free refill, no not the case....

So please ASDA CEO please change this!!

BTW
IKEA allows free refill and the best thing is if you are a Family Member you can have free 1st cup as well.... so free all the way....
johnsmith1997 to dalipsinghno1
22 Oct 15 1 #19
IKEA is always useful.
Not all places have an IKEA nearby tho.
For those that don't Subway (those that allow refills) and Burger King will be useful,as they are plentiful.
johnsmith1997
22 Oct 15 #18
Been to a few Burger Kings eg.Gunwharf Quays,Portsmouth; Guildford.
The soft drinks there are refillable as well.
Give you a cup and fill at the machine.

22 Oct 15 1 #21
I never knew this and have been a subway regular for years. However most of my local branches are so small with few seats that I never eat in, so can't really take advantage of the offer anyway. I doubt you could walk back in with your cup half an hour later and get a free refill!
Cameron92
22 Oct 15 #22
I always go up and refill, never asked but never been told not to do it. If they didn't want you to do it why have a self-service machine that is often not in direct view of the main counter staff.

22 Oct 15 #23
I think its store specific. I go to 2 Subway stores regularly one allows unlimited refills the other only allows one additional refill.

22 Oct 15 3 #27
Pretty sure earlier it was in freebies, if so it has been moved...and most likely because technically it is not a freebie as a purchase has to be made...irrelevant anyway, it is still a handy valid heads up for those that do not know whether in freebies, as a deal or in misc.
Shatwell
22 Oct 15 #28
It's news to me ... that everyone didn't know this.
Include burger joints in this too.
If they give you an empty cup and allow you to fill it yourself, then it's free refills.
If they don't allow refills, they fill it before they give you the cup.

All the places I've been in, UK or abroad, have used the above method.
wavecrest1
22 Oct 15 1 #31
Subway policies are store specific.
Not every Subway franchise offers free refills.
Similarly, there are a few that don't even offer the standard £3 deal.

But yea, most busy Subways limit it to 1 refill these days.

ether707
22 Oct 15 #35
Our subway only offers 1 refill now as kids were abusing it. 20 of them would come into the store and share 1 cup between them. Other kids will go play in the local skatepark and then come back to refill their drinks lol..
premierfella
22 Oct 15 #36
Those talking about shoplifting have little to worry about.

Yes, security could in theory collar you for shoplifting. In practice that would be going nowhere if you HONESTLY believed that refills were free because they were in the past, or were in other same chain stores you frequent. The worst that would happen would be a store ban.
septimoose to premierfella
22 Oct 15 3 #41
Correct!

Theft is dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another with intention to permanently deprive. The differentiating factor between what OP did and theft is that he honestly thought based on a previous course of dealings that the refills were free.

There's no reason to be embarrassed by an honest mistake, go into that ASDA all you want!

I got store banned from an ASDA by Bradford for changing the language on the demo iPad back from something like Urdu to English. Apparently it was set up that way to cater specifically to people who didn't speak English.

Free refills are always better though

Not all Subways offer free refills, most do but i would check before you start loading you cups again or you may end up being accused of stealing like the poster @ ASDA

pidgeofcdf
22 Oct 15 #42
Thought this was common knowledge lol.
A few of them stick signs up saying no refills but 95% allow it.
For the poster who mentioned ikea, their soda is horrible own brand stuff, whereas subway are coke/Pepsi

As someone who worked as manager in McDonald's many years ago, I can tell you that the margins on these drinks are ridiculous when sold . It cost the restaurant around 10p per cup, so Subway aren't really losing here.

nmarshgiddings
22 Oct 15 #52
Not really a deal, they've always done this? As a rule anywhere with the fountain drinks you fill yourself are free refills. It's the same everywhere, sounds like the woman in Asda didn't have a clue what she was talking about (not really surprising for Asda).

Yea always been free refills at Subway, although it's true they don't really shout about it.

Used to go to Subway all the time, especially for breakie as often eat out for breakie. But once had a cold breakfast sarnie at Subway which put me off. Seen as I often eat at Meadowhall there are lots of other options like Nosh, Greggs and Weatherspoons...breakie out is so cheap at most like £2 for a sarnie and a drink (at Weatherspoons & Greggs anyway).
premierfella
22 Oct 15 1 #62
Sounds about right. In the same category as printed coupons I suppose.

It is a bit strange that some of the national supermarket chains seem to allow local store managers to implement local policies in such innocuous areas of their customer-facing business. Their choice I guess, but it does mean that customers are often left wondering whether staff are making up policy on the hoof.
adamcroft1996

Icalldibs
22 Oct 15 1 #66
I did not know they were free. do any other fast food places do this like burger king or mcdonalds?
upset brown pant
22 Oct 15 #67
it's more likely that they have to make a certain amount of profit on the cafe; if profits are low then stopping free refills happens. if hardly anyone takes advantage of it they let it continue.

quite why anyone is bothered by this enough for it to determine whether they regularly go to an asda cafe or not is beyond me. really quite eye-openingly small minded behaviour.

With the onset of cold winter, would it not be better to ask for a caffè latte?

I've often wondered if people knew they could choose a hot drink over sugary acid for no charge.
premierfella
23 Oct 15 #79
I'd agree if we were talking about something that would seriously erode margins, but we are not - as others have indicated drink refills cost them peanuts. They'd only be eroding their profit if customers would have paid for the refills, which of course very few ever do where refills are not free.

No doubt Jamie Oliver would have something to say about all this

This actually depends on each store as both stores in Bury allow it but one in Chatham centre doesn't, the one on the Dockyard allows 1 free refil. You'd really have to ask the staff.
aiden0109
