Vodafone promotion but works with any mobile number, they send you a tag to stick to your phone (or wherever!) and a contactless Visa card.
You do not register your own debit card at any time in the sign up process, your card and tag are then sent to you. You can top up or just spend the £5.
You can use the tag even if your battery is empty, can also send money to other SmartPass users (donations gratefully received, lol)
You only need a Android or iphone to download the app and register, then delete as you can login and access from https://vodafonesmartpass.com/log/uk/ after set up to do anything further, like activate your tag and card...ie borrow someones mobile, download, register with your own mobile number in the app by changing it when it reads the number off the sim, input your details, complete registration and delete app
.
20,000 £5 credits are up for grabs, grab your free lunch - who said there is no such thing?!

i know it's just me, but i don't see where it says you get a tag to stick on the phone- looks like you get a contactless sim card, but the terms and conditions say you must be a vodafone customer first- does that mean you replace your existing sim?

I signed up but now it tells me it can't do a transaction. All I'm trying to do is login. I believe this is because I don't yet have the cards they're sending out. (Which is fair enough since I only just signed up.)
As for the nfc, if your phone has built in nfc shouldn't that be enough for the app without have to add stickers? I believe it is.
The last Gadget Show (One can still watch on Demand 5) had a fair bit about all the nfc bank card stuff. I just think the women at my local coop are going to get confused if I try to hand my phone over as my bonus card. They always swipe the cards. My phone is thin, but not that thin. lol btw I know how this tech works, I'm just looking forward to the faces on some of the local staff. :stuck_out_tongue:

I wont stick it to my mobile, I have a wrist band from Barclaycard Bpay before they ended that that 1st round of contactless and said you had to buy a replacement, lol just LOL, hopefully it will fit in that.
My balance shows as £0 but the transaction history says £5 pending (this is on the app, web login just says £5 )
Free worldwide ATM cash until 30th Dec, then £2, max withdrawl is £100 at a time with the Smartpass companion Visa Debit.
12 months of no action and the card charges £1 a month apparently, if its unused for that period but empty and they cant collect the £1 its closed down.

Do you own an Android phone ? Maybe it's due to you not having an iPhone, only the cool kids get this.
How old is your sim ? phones with NFC will use the sim and NFC to validate like EE cash on tap does. The tag is less secure in that way.

Does anyone know whether they they offer contactless sim which can be used in supported phones such as Samsung S6/Edge that you don't need the sticker for payments same as what EE offers ?
zorba_g
16 Oct 152#25
I just signed up for this last week and am now actively using it. My phone is a Samsung Note 3 which has built in NFC but isn't supported - I also have the thicker Qi charging case on the phone.
Few points:
1) I haven't got it working in my phone yet. I went to the local Vodafone shop and they swapped my sim for free for an NFC Sim. I am yet to figure out whether NFC has to be enabled or not though. I tried to buy something with NFC active and the machine complained. With NFC inactive nothing was detected. I suspect the memory card which sits over the SIM might be blocking the signal, with the back cover.
2) The tag and card arrive by post - only then can you enable the service. I've stuck the tag to the back of my work ID so I can pay easily at the canteen when the phone embarrasses me. When you pay for something, the app pops up a notification to tell you what you spent and where.
3) You can top up the account using the app, and set up auto topup too. I haven't checked out how to withdraw a future final balance, should it be necessary.
I'm happy with it so far - would be good if it worked with the phone NFC but my understanding is there are different generations/versions of NFC which have different strengths of security. I'm tempted to put the SIM in a cheapo Nokia ('going out phone') to see if the signal works there; apparently the phone doesn't need to be on to use the SIM.
From the FAQ: I have a SmartPass Tag. My smartphone also has NFC functionality. Will my SmartPass Tag work if the NFC functionality on my phone is switched on?
We recommend that you switch off the NFC functionality on your phone when you’re using your SmartPass Tag. This will ensure that there is no interference between the NFC antenna on the Tag and the NFC antenna on your phone.
I have attached the SmartPass Tag to the back of my phone. When I try to make a payment using the Tag, it’s declined. Why is this happening? What should I do?
If your phone has a metal casing it may be interfering with the NFC antenna on the SmartPass Tag. If you have a cover for your phone, it may work better if you attach the SmartPass Tag to the inside of the cover with the Vodafone logo facing outwards.
What's interesting is that you can take the service with you if you leave Vodafone.
I'll try and answer any questions if you want.

Top up options are bank transfer, credit or debit card, and 'voucher' - but no idea what kind, I never use them. From the FAQ: Voucher code
From the SmartPass app, tap on “Top up” on the homescreen. Select “Voucher”. Enter the voucher code you received from the SmartPass team and the voucher value will be added to the balance on your SmartPass account.
From a desktop PC, log in to your SmartPass account online at https://vodafonesmartpass.com/log/uk/ and go to the “Top Up” section

It seems that to register, you need to be on the Vodafone network, since the Vodafone Wallet app refuses if you're on WiFi or another mobile network.
However, you don't actually need to use a Vodafone SIM. Another network (MVNO) which uses Vodafone should also be OK. I successfully registered using a Talkmobile SIM for example. Sainsbury's Mobile could/should work as well.
