I've got two ordered, lol. One in case payment fails at GAME and they flat out cancel it, as they often do. Means I won't get the free bobble head (already received the free t-shirt) from my other order at Gamestop, but at least I'll get the Pip Boy which I can then wear down to Tesco and blast some radioactive scum with my potato gun.

Fallout 4 on PS4 is £38.95 on Rakuten, but only £36.85 on the main TheGameCollection website (+ 360 points) so you're saving £2 straight away right there on this purchase.
I take it this deal is only highly rated because you can get 20x points today only, or the equivalent of around £7 off a future purchase (or effectively £5 if you take into account you're over-paying by £2 on Rakuten) but only till the end of November to use the £5 of points? Given Bethesda\s previous record of totally screwing up the fallout titles on playstation and xbox I would strongly suggest that anyone who wants to play this uses a gaming PC instead. I saw people saying this previously but put it down to PC users being asses but TBH they weren't wrong!
I initially played Fallout 3 and New Vegas (both the base versions and GOTY versions) on the Playstation 3 and having recently bought a really cheap gaming PC I acquired the same titles again off steam for a couple of pounds. The differences are quite shocking it really is like playing a different game. I even managed to get my old PS3 controller working on the PC so there is very little difference in the controls.
I appreciate that the latest gen consoles are more like PCs so in theory there should be less issues but what would really worry me is that Bethesda's minimum requirements on the PC are 8Gb of RAM something those new consoles are really going to struggle with - so something is going to have to give?
The PC version of Fallout 4 has already been selling at around the £25 mark for a few months watch it drop after launch.
Black_Knight to Bejeezus
16 Oct 15#51
Never heard of any issues on Xbox with Fallout or TES. I know PS3 had problems due to the fact the engine Bethesda use didn't play nice with the architecture.
Should be OK this gen for both consoles through due to the fact neither console has any arcane architecture that you had to be sacrifice several goats and your first born to the Sony gods to get it to work.
Still, if you've got a good PC that is as ever the superior choice.

slayermatt to arsenalfan
16 Oct 15#48
The "deal" is not so much the £38.95 price tag (TGC and Base both have it cheaper) but more the £7.60 credit and cashback. It's all a gamble, but one that brings it down if you would use the credit.
£30 (effectively) isn't a bad price for a AAA preorder, it's only hit £25 on PC from memory. Not much different. But still not a deal for everyone. OP stated he has 8300 odd points, so for him it's effective cost is nothing even if it is slightly more expensive than most places.

I preordered Halo 5 from Base/Rakuten and it's a shame I probably won't get those points before they expire. Still tempted. Haven't decided where I'm putting my preorder down for yet. Hopefully this will be my last preorder in a long time  Hate preordering, but this and Halo are two games I'd rather not see spoilers for before I get round to playing.

I never understand why on the Game Collections own website the games are always cheaper than on Rakuten. This game is £36.85 on its actual site (PS4 and XBone).
So if you dont plan to buy anything in November from Rakuten, buy the game for £2.10 less at the Game Collection site - 2% quidco
Just Wondering to Lord vader
16 Oct 15#53
Because , rakuten , DONT let people sell on their site for free , just like eBay and Amazon they charge a commission on every sale ...
slayermatt to Lord vader
16 Oct 151#56
Because they have to pay Rakuten a commission I assume. But if Rakuten are offering points deals like they always do, plus discount codes it works out about the same. TGC don't miss out regardless. When I cancelled an order to reorder with a code with Base, they mentioned payment is all handled by Rakuten, and they get the price off the product regardless. Makes smart business sense really. During sales, they sell more on Rakuten, other times, they have some of the better prices. I can't bring myself to spend another £300 on a console. I've already spent about £500 this gen on them (Shared one, then a personal one last Christmas). I know first hand cashback and rewards shouldn't really be relied on, I find more times than not I don't get them. That said, with Halo if it's dispatched as early as Rare Replay was, I should have a day to spend my points (which I shall if they turn up). More power to you, but I'm not a gambling man. Plus, all getting those £7.60 in points would do is convince me to spend on more pointless crap I don't need! Do I want Battlefront for example? Yes. Will I actually play it? Once or twice. As a student that pays £120 a month just to travel 2 days a week, I know that there's better stuff to spend my money on. Always sales later on down the line.

Ah well NV suffered a lot worse than F3 did, though I lay the blame for that more at the door of Obsidian than anything, when it was released it was a complete disaster.
Fingers crossed Bethesda get it out the door fully functional, though there will be bugs in all versions without a doubt (likely some save corrupting ones too so I'll be keeping backups upon backups), PC will be patched up first as ever because they won't have to wait on certification from MS & Sony.
slayermatt
16 Oct 15#64
I've not had the best experiance with Bethesda games in the bug department regardless - if it's there I've probably seen it  To be fair, auto saves cause a lot of issues in a lot of games, and turning it off made me realise how many issues it must have caused. I know my save is rather large which also causes loading issues (I'm about 500 hours in on that save). That said, Bethesda do patch there games relatively well and quick, and the games themselves are good just hindered from the bugs, rather than bad and bugs make it worse. I always keep backup saves (for my main one I do a new save everytime and other saves alternate between 5) for any game that allows multiple saves as more than one occasion I've been screwed, worst being NV I lost 50 hours of play because I couldn't leave an area without it crashing and I saved in there because of a speech challenge.

My concern with the current generation of consoles is basically RAM allocation. Apparently the PS4 and XBone make between 1-2 GB less RAM available to developers than an 8GB PC running Windows 10 does! I dread to think what the wait times between locations will be on the XBone/PS4 versions ?

I don’t think that should be a concern, the recommended PC specs call for 8GB ram and the chances of the game utilising that 8gb fully are pretty remote, I mean on PC you’re usually running other stuff than just the game anyway, same as consoles are running the OS & other services at the same time.
If you’re concerned about load times then on Xbox you can use an external drive, that improves things and on PS4 perhaps a replacement for the internal drive and on PC, store the game on an SSD.

Hardly. Licensing fees. Simple as. I'd say a 15% mark up isn't unreasonable vs the PC version (which FYI is the £40 retail on Steam, if you could get foreign imports digitally like CDkeys operate console gaming would be cheaper). It's easier to source CD keys from a cheaper market and also licencing is the main reason for the difference. Inflation should dictate games should be in the £60 - £70 region at a £40 RRP - basically gaming is cheap.
Just Wondering
16 Oct 151#83
My concern is the 30 fps , I have a good pc for gaming , should easily max out FO4 at 1080 , but I play a lot of Destiny that is also 30fps ,but I tried out far cry 3 on ps4 and I found it unplayable at 30fps compared with my pc version running super smooth 60 fps , but at this price point ,if I really don't like the frame rate then I will flog it on and buy a cheap online key offer with the proceeds , so I kinda have nothing to lose , but my big incentive is the pick up my ps4 pad and play situation, as opposed to going upstairs and playing on my pc , even though I have a cable I can run to my tv and play downstairs , its just a bit to much hassle if I am going to play for a hour or 2 . slayermatt
16 Oct 15#89
Okay let me say it simply
1. PC gaming is cheaper due to the lack of licensing needed, and the fact it's easier to source games from cheaper countries (Euro countries like CDkeys do).
2. Consoles are more expensive for new releases by around 15-20%, this is because of licensing, no easy foreign sources, as well as boxed copies having a production cost and laws. However it's still cheaper than it should be (see point 3.)
3. Gaming in general is still a cheap hobby as inflation dictates a game with a £40 RRP 10 years ago, should be selling at a £60-£70 RRP which they don't
There's not a lot to disagree with, its just fact. If you don't want to buy console games - then don't. Simple. More power to you.

For real. I have no idea why people buy single player games then keep them forever, or even buy them digitally. In the past 6 months or so, I've played Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Mordor, Metal Gear Solid, Mad Max, Tomb Raider and quite a few others and spent about £5 max in total after selling the games on when you're done.
arsenalfan
16 Oct 151#93
1. So basically Sony and Microsoft makes you pay extra and you guys are just lining the pockets of these already multi millionaires who don't care about you. Not to mention the paying to play online fee which is ridiculous.
2. It's not 15-20% that's the absolute minimum. A lot of PC games are half the price they are on console and some aree even more than that. Console gaming is a rip off.
3. Why should games be £60-70 because of inflation? Didn't games used to be £30 brand new if I remember correctly. They've already gone up and remember those were the days when there was no DLC, micro-transactions. They make their money from that stuff now so I don't agree with you on that. Also, I don't buy console games that much anyway but I'm here to tell people the truth that it's not good value because some people might not know about that.

1. It's the price you pay - Nintendo are also the same but nobody mentions them.
2. You can't compare grey key sites to brick and mortar stores. It's not the same. I buy from grey key sites all the time like you probably do. But cases like Mad Max being £10 for example is completely down to a number of factors that I'm sure the devs don't appreciate us taking advantage of (I'm not taking a moral ground, just stating how it is). That said, the moment retail stores get with the times xbox/ps digital downloads should drop.
3. Inflation dictates that $60 in 1995 is worth around $90 in 2015. While those are American stats the UK and American economy is very similar so is comparable. You're also forgetting that videogames used to cost more than that, around $80/£60 in the NES and SNES days not £30.... I actually have a SNES cartridge somewhere in my room that still has a £60 sticker on it. Can't remember anything other than Gameboy games retailing for less than £30 RRP. So basically prices have actually gone down when in reality they should have increased.
But they are good value? £40 for 400 hours plus gameplay? You could waste that in a night out drinking. Yes PC games are better value, but saying console gaming isn't good value isn't true. Gaming is probably one of the best value hobbies there is when you think about it - regardless of how you do it.
Edit: For background, I have a pretty capable PC that would likely max Fallout 4 at the resolution I use. Some games I just prefer on my console.

I went to buy this at 23.55, couldn’t remember my password so reset it but by the time I’d got to the very last confirm screen it was about 10 seconds too late. Damn!

1. It's the price you don't have to pay if you game on PC. Why would I pay more to play games on an inferior platform only to support companies worth billions that don't care about us?
2. The less money I give to these greedy companies the better. I would rather support the indie devs if you want to support these companies that's on you but I'm going to keep telling people PC is cheaper because it's facts and I'm actually helping them know the truth.
3. I already told you they make way more than that because of DLC and microtransactions. How many AAA games come out nowadays with all the additional DLC being free? They are actually taking stuff out of the game and putting it back in later as DLC. Why do you think games like the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront have so little content? They keep the price at that because they have done the research and found out that it's actually better for them to keep the games the same price.
If it is £40 for 400 hours gameplay then that is good value but what about games like Order 1886 which is £40 for 6 hours gameplay?

A little flawed that, I picked the order up for £17.99 a few weeks after release.... I'm thinking you many have been held at gunpoint and forced to pay £40 for the order on the day of release, or even weeks after given your comment!? Or was it a lack a patience and willpower that forced you to drop £40 and then feel ripped off?

PC gaming might "seem" cheaper but that's mostly down to the fact that they can release titles digitally without production costs, obviously most games have packaging but they don't have to produce as many.
Also, PC games come with 1 license only, as soon as you use your CD key, regardless if it's a physically or digital copy, you won't be selling the game on. You won't be playing the game forever so at some point in time, you'll own the game and never play it again, rendering it useless.
Console gaming is pretty cheap if you stick to the HUKD deals, I can't count how many times I've snagged a cheap deal on this site, played the hell out of the game, got bored, sold it and either ended up with a profit from CEX/eBay or lost a few quid, for playing the latest game. I know some people are "collectors" and this might not count for them but overall, a console gamer WILL be the one saving the most money and playing the latest games.
Saying that, for me, I've got a beast of a PC (4K capable at 30-60fps depending on game, 1440p at 60fps) and it **** all over console gaming and for me is worth the extra money to be able to experience something that runs smoother and looks a hell of a lot better. Far Cry 4 on PC at 4K resolution makes the console version look like minecraft. I prefer Fifa on my PS4 though.

So PC gaming is not actually cheaper is that what you're trying to say? Even when I was mainly playing on console I never traded most of my games in I don't know how you guys look at gaming but I don't see it like that.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest a lot of people looking to save a few quid on a deals website may have to work more than an hour to pay for this having said that you point about cost vs game time is totally correct. I'm pay £100 for my version and even at that price I am willing to bet it will cost me less than £1 an hour.
PC games cost less, this is a thing we know so I don't know why people have to keep bringing it up. Having said that they have no trade in value, I have, in the past completed a game 100% and then managed to trade it for more than I paid, seems pretty good value then.

Last Saturday. You needed to be within the first 10,000 people who ordered from them.
How to check:
"If you have pre-ordered after Tuesday 16th June 10:11AM unfortunately you would not be eligible for a T-Shirt"
It seems they both get the mods, just Xbox One gets it first. I would say the best way to make the choice between the two platforms is to decide if the longer wait for PS4 a problem or if someone wants to get the free Fallout 3 with Xbox One

I don't get it. If PC games cannot be traded in, then why are there tons of pre-owned games online and instore! Does that mean I have to buy an activation code too to play a preowned game?

The main thing is I've already booked a week off work in anticipation :stuck_out_tongue:
Thanks for raising awareness OP.
I take it this deal is only highly rated because you can get 20x points today only, or the equivalent of around £7 off a future purchase (or effectively £5 if you take into account you're over-paying by £2 on Rakuten) but only till the end of November to use the £5 of points? Doesn't seem like a great deal to me...Not sure why you'd need any other game after buying Fallout 4 anyway
Should be OK this gen for both consoles through due to the fact neither console has any arcane architecture that you had to be sacrifice several goats and your first born to the Sony gods to get it to work.
Still, if you've got a good PC that is as ever the superior choice.
Starting to think this site is run by CDKeys and Rakuten shareholders.
£30 (effectively) isn't a bad price for a AAA preorder, it's only hit £25 on PC from memory. Not much different. But still not a deal for everyone. OP stated he has 8300 odd points, so for him it's effective cost is nothing even if it is slightly more expensive than most places.
Very confused how that is a rip off.
Still tempted. Haven't decided where I'm putting my preorder down for yet. Hopefully this will be my last preorder in a long time  Hate preordering, but this and Halo are two games I'd rather not see spoilers for before I get round to playing.

So if you dont plan to buy anything in November from Rakuten, buy the game for £2.10 less at the Game Collection site - 2% quidco
Also, with the 210 reduction, the 760 new points arent reduced.
Nice.
I don't like being tied to points though so preordered mine via flubit for about £30
Fingers crossed Bethesda get it out the door fully functional, though there will be bugs in all versions without a doubt (likely some save corrupting ones too so I'll be keeping backups upon backups), PC will be patched up first as ever because they won't have to wait on certification from MS & Sony.
If you’re concerned about load times then on Xbox you can use an external drive, that improves things and on PS4 perhaps a replacement for the internal drive and on PC, store the game on an SSD.
You sicken me.
:stuck_out_tongue:
2. The less money I give to these greedy companies the better. I would rather support the indie devs if you want to support these companies that's on you but I'm going to keep telling people PC is cheaper because it's facts and I'm actually helping them know the truth.
