I have three of the original chromecasts. Whilst they're absolutely rubbish I really couldn't live without mine. Now try and work that one out!! (It's probably more the apps in fairness rather than the chromecast)

How is it rubbish? Chromecast's do what they're supposed to without any bells or whistles. Couldn't be without mine.

Got mine from Wuaki and agree, they are brilliant. I prefer to use it with my Nexus 6 over the so called Smart features of my Samsung TV.

If you have a router capable of 5ghz wifi I'd strongly recommend getting the 2.0 version as it'll likely run a lot better. Even at 2.4ghz it'll probably run better due to 3 antennae rather than 1.
Hot for the price but I'll be paying the extra £10 for the new one myself.

waste of money and high price since fire Tv is better and has more options. Its cold. I have both but chromecast i hardly use since we need to have a mobile always to use it and there is no inbuilt app store.
It's simple, extremely cheap, works.

why do you need to "mirror" your phone to watch porn?
Just use one of the MANY apps that cast local content. Allcast is one ES File Explorer has a cast program so you can cast from the file browser.
Don't really get the criticism because you can stream local & net content. In fact I regularly stream content from my server via my phone to the TV and that works flawlessly too

You can mirror your phone. Simply press the options icon in the Chromecast app and select Cast screen / audio. Then you'll see/hear what ever your smartphone is doing. Otherwise, do what others have said, and just cast your "videos" using one of the many video casting apps. These can be easily found using the Chromecast app as well.

That's almost true with all cheaper tech. Decent price for now, a good buy, but you are correct in saying that it will likely be cheaper at some point
Seem about the price these should be sold for new to be honest. Half the cost of the Fire Stick, half the performance with just a quarter of the storage and no remote control supplied.
I would hedge my bets that Amazon will have another round of £25 sales on their Fire Sticks in the upcoming Black Friday/Cyber Monday events.

I bought a Chromecast when Tesco had them for £15 quite a while ago, however the wifi range on them is absolutely pathetic, I chanced an EzCast at £16 from memory (copy of the ChromeCast) and the wifi range was a lot better and no issues with screen mirroring at all. Just food for thought....

The Firestick can do a damn site more than the Chromecast, with an added remote control provided to boot. Obviously if all you want to do is cast a device then nope, but that's like saying what can netflix on a firestick do that netflix on a chromecast can't do.

Thanks I'll keep an eye out for deals on the V2 then.
I already have the rest of the Multiroom AV setup: Multiroom Amp, ceiling speakers throughout the house, etc. However, it's currently running of a Squeezebox system. Major issue is since Logitech dropped support, stuff like streaming Spotify is only supported by third part plugins. Those don't work on my current version of Linux on LMS and I really don't want to mess with a working system.
These seem relatively cheap, looks like they are being developed by Google going forward. So a good route to go from Squeezebox. Moreover, I can recoup the cost by selling of my Squeezebox stuff.
Couple of more questions:
Does the previous ethernet adapter work with the new Chromecast?
How well do they work with Apple devices? I know Spotify iOS now supports casting. Other then that I'd probably want to stream any on device music and possibly web audio (youtube).
Do they support Web Radio stations directly? I.E. I start the cast from my phone, but it doesn't stream through my phone.
Currently I have a 8 channel Multiroom Amp. Each of my Squeezeboxes are connected to it. Obviously I don't want the Amp on 24/7 sitting idle. So I have the LMS (Server) setup to WoL (Wake on LAN) and one of those USB triggered power saving plugs running of it to power the AMP. So when LMS wakes, 5v shows on USB connected to Power Saving Plug, it switches power on to the Amp connected through it. Anyone found a suitable solution for triggering connected AMPs to power on with these? Or even an alternative mini amp as I can probably get rid of my Multiroom Amp to fund replacement mini Amps.
Thanks again to all the help. Or perhaps you can point me to the best place to ask my questions

17 Oct 151#66
Hah, that's a lot of questions, will give some of them a go! In reverse order lol, what you could do is use an amp like the one I posted or similar which could be left on all the time. You could then use tasker + autocast. This allows you to set triggers and preform casting functionality. For example you could have it setup so that when your phone connects to the wifi it starts casting your music (for when you return home from work say). Tasker is quite a beast so what you can do with it is limited to your imagination really, there are a ton of tutorials out there though with some very cool tips. I imagine you can even use it with your current system to wake an amp, although I guess that will require more creative thinking
Edit: yep, looks like WoL is a go: tasker-profiles.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/auto-wake-on-lan-when-returning-home.html should be plenty other tutorials out there as well
Regarding the web radio, that is how chromecast works, your phone/tablet is just a remote, the chromecast streams the signal. You can turn your phone off for example and the music will continue being streamed by the chromecast.
There is support in iOS for chromecast now, it is limited the apps that support it though. iOS doesn't support it natively like android though so there will always be cases where it will do more on android, for most people though this isn't an issue I guess. For example on android you can cast your entire screen and whatever you are doing on it, on the regular chromecast.
I didn't know chromecast had an Ethernet adapter tbh so can't help there!
