A faily good price for a brand new 2015 Macbook Pro Retina (compared with other stores)

Agreed, it's bottom of the Macbook Pro range with only 128GB SSD, and it's an Apple - but I couldn't find a cheaper price for a brand new boxed MF839B/A from a seemingly reputable seller.

Check your eBay account to see whether you have a 10% off voucher.

Just purchased for around £735.

Some people prefer higher specification and some prefer higher quality. Some have a budget to stick to and some don't. Get the machine that does what you want, with the OS that you want and quality that you want and pay the appropriate price. No need to boast or show off or slate each other. Some people drive a Ford Fiesta and some drive a BMW. Neither cars are wrong or **** and I wouldn't go around slating drivers of either. They are different machines. Accept it people

Some 3rd party SSD makers may release compatible replacements soon, but expect them to be relatively expensive.

That's not correct, the 2015 MacBooks use custom PCI-e SSD cards:
https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook-Air-13-Inch-and-MacBook-Pro-Retina-13-Inch-Early-2015-SSD/IF188-108-3

There are no third party compatible SSDs for it at this time. Likewise, RAM is soldered to the motherboard.

16 Oct 15 #33

16 Oct 15 #34
Guess you didn't read this http://www.hotukdeals.com/misc/simply-electronics-a-warning-391698?page=41#comments :S Hopefully you have no problems though .

The main difference you'll notice is the enter key. It's a different shape. Also obviously no £ on it but, as long as the keyboard layout is set to UK on the software it'll work with the shift and 3 key. Because of the difference with the enter key the | key is in a different place as well.
However, most people say the US keyboard layout is better than UK and European layout. I have used a US keyboard layout and you get used to it easily then when using a UK one I was pressing enter in the wrong place (but again have got used to it).
This pic shows the differences

Hi, Are you sure this applies to web orders or bricks and mortar stores only? Ask because i'd had an absolute nightmare getting support on a faulty iPad bought from their website that is under 2-Yrs old. Very, very clearly they did not want to help unless a one-off fee (£29.00 from recollection) was paid and even then despite SOGA being referred to they were insistent that repair charges would more than likely apply. Was extremely upset with their attitude tbh.

I hAve a 2013/2014 13" macbook pro with 4gb ram and 128 ssd
The ram is soldered to the motherboard just like macbook airs and lenovo x1. And the ssd are Apple ones which are very expensive to upgrade. If you are thinking g of upgrading later you may aswell get one now with 16gb and bigger ssd.

Windows machines are very poor since buying a mac it just works no updates daily from crappy windows best laptop i have bought as it works well well worth 1k.

Its all up to the person but i was a anti apple person before...
andymagic
16 Oct 15 1 #47
You aren't comparing similar machines though if you're seeing a £500 difference, there's more to the specs than the CPU clock speed and amount of storage, watch the price gap close up when comparing an Apple laptop to an Asus Zenbook, Dell XPS, HP Spectre etc..

16 Oct 15 #48
what else should i be looking at
skinnyman9000

He's right. you can get a PC World special for £300, but if you actually compare a high end windows machine spec for spec the price difference is negligible.

andymagic
16 Oct 15 #54
My point was that comparing a low end Dell/Toshiba/HP/Asus/Acer with the same speed CPU, amount of RAM and storage to a MacBook isn't really comparing like for like, to be a true comparison the machines your comparing to need to be of a similar grade, IE battery life, quality of materials and construction, which means looking at Zenbook, Ativ, XPS etc. and that the prices of those machines are much closer to that of a MacBook, not the £500 chasm you claim there to be.

In addition to a MacBook I've also got a Sony Vaio and an HP ProBook, the Sony is plastic and it shows, the ProBook is partly made from an alloy of some sort but these alloy parts are just covers, it's also double the thickness of my MacBook and has at best half the battery life when in use. If left for more than a week it needs charging to even turn on whereas the MacBook will go for weeks without needing a charge.

As with most things in life, there is more to things than just 'the numbers' whether it's engine capacity (cars), the amount of watts it outputs (stereo's) or the number of KG's of washing you stuff in it (washing machines) and all this is before you get started with levels of service and aftercare.
shakerstevens
16 Oct 15 1 #55
Yep that's the main thing, their lifespan is fantastic. I recently sold a 2008 MacBook for £300 that only cost myself £550 in 2009 (I bought it 2nd hand at the time).

16 Oct 15 #56
What that means is they offer two options at the time of purchase both of which are soldered and neither are upgradeable.

16 Oct 15 #57

16 Oct 15 #58
No, the @ symbol is in the same place on both US and UK keyboard Macbook layouts. It's in the "wrong" place if you're used to UK Windows keyboards but, you soon get used to it anyway, I have

With regards to the # no, not on UK layouts but, that's probably only the second time I've done a hashtag this year I rarely use Twitter so not an issue for me and even if I did, it's not exactly that much harder to press alt along with the 3 key. I use it so little I'd forgot it existed :stuck_out_tongue:.

Anyway, to add to the discussion, I've owned various Windows laptops/computers - the best Windows device I've ever used, was the Surface Pro 2. So clearly things work better if made by the OS manufacturer as same can be said for stock Android/Google devices and why iPhones are by many (except Hukkers) popular. Same for Macbooks. I've had a Macbook probably about 3 months now and I absolutely love it. Can't believe all the hate I threw at them before. While brand new may be overpriced to some, as it stands now, I'd rather buy a brand new Macbook, than a brand new Surface Pro 4. Both are expensive but, I've found Mac OS works better. Only thing I miss from Windows is IrfanView but, now I know how to get around that, it's not a problem .
Oh and in regards to prices......12 month old top of range Sony Vaio, £700 when new in 2014, struggle to get £250 for it. Same with Surface Pro 2, £600 odd pound, still 2 months warranty left, £250 despite being in perfect condition.
2010 Macbook Pro, sold one for £380 easily o.O - despite being a bit battered.

As someone has already pointed out.. Pretty much everything is different. Lol for a start it's not even hd, never mind the far superior resolution (and superior screen) of retina. These antimac people are so dumb sometimes. Well worth the investment. I've had countless laptops and all slowed down and got rid of within two years (with a big fall in price) I picked up a two year old macbook pro 3 years ago water damaged. Fixed it up a bit and it's still faster than a newer windows i5. And more reliable. And sturdy. With a superior os (unless you want it for games). You get what you pay for.

Mine's been going since January 2008. I upgraded the Ram from 2 to 4gb when I got it, and that's it. I'm in the market for a new computer because I want the features of the newer OS's. Otherwise it's working fine. It's a Macbook BTW.

For balance, I think iOS is junk, would never have an iPhone (I always go for the top spec HTC) and although I bought an iPad Air 2 to try it, I found it dull and boring and sold it again quite quickly. However, Macs and OS X are epic. Due to my dislike of iPhones, I was pretty much an Apple hater for a number of years, but then I dipped my toe into OS X and I'm now fully hooked. I have a MacBook Pro Retina (same as this deal but 512gb - to be fair though, I don't use anywhere near it's storage capacity, so don't think a 128gb would be a major problem), I have a 27" slim iMac, a top spec Mac mini (which is my 'main' PC) and I have just bought, for no other reason than I couldn't resist, the latest MacBook 12" Retina in gold. The iMac is pretty much an ornament in my lounge, and the gold MacBook is a bit of a toy, but I honestly couldn't live without my MacBook Pro and Mac mini, they are both amazing. The other issue is, once you have used a MBP, EVERY Windows laptop just feels like plastic junk, regardless of it's specs.

It's just gorgeous mate, I can't put it down! Sad I know.

I'm sure my MBP is better in every tangible way, but it's just so thin and light I can't get over it. Nothing actually bad though, battery lasts well, screen is great, keyboard is a bit weird, but not 'bad'. I managed to buy it brand new for £769, so figured the money was as safe as sat in the bank, can always sell it if and when the novelty wears off.

I found mine on eBay just a few weeks ago, it was on at £869, but for some reason I was offered a 15% (with a max of £100) voucher for using eBay/Paypal, so obviously the time was right to hit the button! It was a strange offer, I haven't found it mentioned anywhere, and it only showed up on my phone and tablet apps, not on my main 'PC'.
