Do you cycle? The reason i ask is that if you cycle regularly in a city in the UK a coat is necessary. Now while its true that pretty much any coat would theoretically do, you soon find cycling regularly that you need a a coat that can do many things:

essential
- Keep you dry
- keep you protected from wind
- but not be too warm, you are cycling and if you don't have showers at work you don't want to end up a sweaty mess

good
- be seen
- have storage options, pockets on the jacket
- but no so many that the jacket becomes billowy, speaking of which
- a snug fit, but not so snug that you can't fit an extra layer under there in winter
- have zips that can be undone wearing gloves
- can be packed down into a stuff sack so it can be kept in your saddle bag / pannier / pocket

and so on and so on...

Now from the essential list, these things are generally trade-offs, a perfectly waterproof jacket would be like an oil-skin, sure it would keep you dry but before you know it you would have drowned in your own sweat, this is a difficult thing for manufacturers to get right and each individual is different. Some do get pretty damn close though, usually through tech like gore-tex and all the rest, but these generally don't come cheap - if i could find a jacket that hit the sweet-spot on those three i would probably pay 4 times the price of this and that's without taking into account the good list, which can themselves make or break a jacket.

But getting a jacket that has got the first 3 things right... time and money has certainly told me that windbreakers from the market aren't really going to cut it and that to get what you need, generally you need to pay for it. I think most people who cycle regularly in this country realise that.

I disagree that cyclists are being mugged. You can get a cheap waterproof jacket that keeps you dry but holds the liquid or pay more and get a specialised material to let the water run off which this jacket does.

Adding into the fact that this is a lightweight jacket, breathable and windproof for cycling and you have an even more specialised and high performance jacket.

You would be hard to find any other jacket at £50 which has all these qualities and not designed for cycling

I am a novice so not really sure what i am looking for but would rather spend money on something that is quality and will last

I've got an older version of this and it's brilliant. really warm and actually does a good job of keeping the rain off.

I was meaning in comparison to the other options available as this jacket is considered a performance jacket and i am not a performance cyclist. Just starting out and dont know whether this is overkill

I wouldn't worry about it being overkill at all, the "performance" aspect relates to the close fit and high starting price that reflects the quality of the materials. Commuting stuff tends to be a bit cheaper, bulkier and heavier.

General opinions on it seem to praise the decent waterproofing whilst still being quite breathable. I'm hoping mine shows up tomorrow as Merlin tend to be quite quick with the deliveries, if it does I will post something on here if you are still not sure about ordering one.

I cycle and I motorcycle. I don't disagree with what you say but I still maintain that this is a high price for what it is - cyclists are being mugged!

I've had one for a while. Fit is great but if it rains hard, you're getting wet.
Unless it's freezing cold, you're going to boil in the bag a get wet from sweat.
Unfortunately that's what happens with all waterproofs

But the good thing is that they are still are behind people who buy original printer inks, expensive aftershaves / perfumes, high end phones....branded clothing.. etc etc

At least this top does offer a benefit other cheaper substitutes something, all of the other products can't do against cheaper alternatives which offer no loss of function or quality (branded clothing & aftershaves / perfumes - its all in the mind / marketing). Original printer inks rarely make sense.

Loads of great reviews when priced at £100 so at half the price its a steal.

Be warned its a tight fit, and very short at the front. Sending mine back.

Taxi drove into the side of me i managed to stay upright and ride the challenge
Basically wasnt watching where he was going and pulled out into my path

I had lights high vis backpack and high vis helmet so a high vis Jacket wouldnt have made a difference because the driver wasnt looking and pulled out.

If its useful, you can get this a little cheaper elsewhere, but in red instead.

Thanks op picked up in large iam 6ft tall long arms slim build, perfect fit feels good on to with no restrictive movements, good quality zips, kept me warm and dry on a 1hr ride in light rain.

why is these deal's always S or Xxl. waste of time
