It is not zero percent if the item is available elsewhere for less, as if you are paying £30 more, then your interest is £30

£249.99 really isn't that hard to save up. Finance should be used only when really necessary.

Yes I get that - so where can you buy this PS4 for less on finance then?

if they do this on an Xbox one that would be brill! I'd prefer a ps4 but everyone I know has a Xbox one.

As said a hundred times before on these deals buy the cheapest going rate for a ps4 on a 0% credit card and pay back that way cold.

Without getting into a row - assuming this PS4 is well priced? You say ' a hundred times before ' use a zero percent interest credit card - so the advantage over this zero finance deal provided by the OP is what?

As far as I know shopto was offering this from the very first day PS4 was released. Nothing new here...

If you got accepted for a Post Office Matched Credit Card the advantage would be:
Why not just save up for it rather then getting in the finance bubble.

credit cards give you a step up the ladder when applying for a mortgage, if you've had no credit in the past you'll find it very hard to be accepted.
it's always worthwile to have a credit card aslong as you pay it off in full straightaway even if you only use it to do the weekly food shop, the added protection for online purchases is another bonus.
Aslong as you use it right and not just so the wife can have another £400 pair of shoes every week just spend what you can afford , never spend more than you can afford to pay back.
I used to be the never get in debt type too , buying cars outright in cash, mobile phones etc paying in cash meant i didn't have the protection should things go tits up.
now i part pay with cash/debit card and spend a £100 of the balance on the card to get the protection.
If you blow the credit on stuff you wouldn't usually buy then you don't need a credit card

Fair enough Chanci32 - I'm glad somebody who knows what they are talking about took the time to explain the possible advantages
So - take longer to pay using a credit card ( subject to status )
Possible £25 quidco advantage? Hmmmm personally I don't bother with quidco although I'm sure it has its benefits!

The other benefit as i am sure people tried to point out is that you can get a 0% card, and then get a ps4 with games for less than the price at shopto, therefore have games + spend less = advantage

If you really want or need 0% just wait for Very's black Friday deals, or the deals they put up shortly after.
They did a PS4 for this price last year with Little Big Planet 3 on 0% for 12 months, along with many other bundles.

Just use Very, PS4 and fifa 16 for £309 use the £30 off first credit order code bringing it to £279 then the 12 months interest free code and as long as you paid it within the 12 months £279 is all you pay

Great deal dont see what people have problem with the 1TB version is same price and comes with a choice of games batman or choice of 2 games or fifa also get thumb grips free too and first payment isn't till 1st Dec. If applied do you get the console before first payment??

I got an idea, how about don't buy until you can afford it. There is something called saving up which people seem to have forgotten how to do. Loan for a car, ok but console FFS... Next you'll be borrowing for the lunchtime sandwich !

Nothing wrong with finance if it doesn't cost you anything and you can afford it. I make 99% of my purchases on Credit Card. The majority of these get cleared every month and the big ticket items get spread.
I'd rather have my savings working for me rather than just spend them, that would just be stupid.

Have to agree I have a Amex and every thing goes on that as it earns cash back then cleared every month. Credit for credit sake is stupid but not if it's done sensibly
theres nothing wrong with 0% finance, the money is better in your bank earning interest than in theirs
SteveEllesmore
18 Oct 15#37
As others have said, getting a 0% credit card is a much more viable option. By purchasing this on 0% finance you're in essence getting credit anyway in much the same way you would do if you have a credit card.
However with a credit card you can get 0% finance - probably for longer too and also get the PS4 cheaper.
BUT BE WARNED - Once you have paid for your PS4 destroy the credit card. Sometimes a mini splurge on things because it says "you have £4,000 to spend" can take years to pay off if you're not careful.
Credit cards are the work of the devil if you don't know how to pay them off and can make you a slave to the wage.
However if you do know how to work them then it's all fine.
DarkBat1
18 Oct 15#39
Please, savings work for you? Let me know when they are actually decent rates before they do the 'work' for you. You're telling me you'd want the pennies from 'saving' £300 and using the credit card money... haha come on.
g8spur
18 Oct 15#40
Not on its own no but if I adopted this philosophy for everything I wouldn't have any savings at all! £300 off my mortgage, in my daughter's account or in a rainy day fund is much better for me than in Shopto's coffers.
DarkBat1
18 Oct 15#41
Wouldn't call it luck, maybe he budgets wisely. Although, unfortunately there are some people in which your comment does apply to, however the vast majority don't know how to money manage and are busy keeping up with everyone else rather than what their finances can actually achieve.
RuudBullit
18 Oct 15#42
haha maybe he does budget wisely. maybe he lives at home with mum and dad. who knows? the point is, that he seems to be basing everyone else's financial situation on his own. £300 might not be a lot of money to some people, but to others its a lot. this 'deal' could help make a family's christmas. the criticism of people opting to use this finance is not warranted.

I'm of the opinion - if you want a PS4, or other gaming console - save up for it. Finance carries risk and if you can't afford the £250 outlet in one go, chances are you're at risk (however small) of not being able to keep up with the monthly payments. A PS4 is not worth a bad mark on your credit rating as it'll really hurt when you need finance to pay for something more essential (a car to get to work in or a mortgage) and can only get a poor interest rate.
I love my PS4, but I wouldn't risk my livelihood on it and believe it or not - kids can do without the latest games console. Get a much cheaper PS3 if they have to have a games console.
(This is coming from a gaming nerd that's lucky enough to be able to get the most recent games consoles, etc - not somebody who thinks gaming is a waste of money.)

Barclays platinum visa seem to have fairly relaxed credit score thresholds and good 0% deals. It would certainly be better to get one of the better value bundles on a new card unless your credit is so bad that you can't get a card with a £300 limit in which case you would probably be rejected for the shopto finance anyway.
JamesClark1991
18 Oct 152#48
Not really. I'm on minimum wage myself. Besides if you know it's for Christmas save up monthly and you'd save yourself the £50 difference on this "deal" overall. Wasting £50 due to lack of preperarion or pressure isn't smart.

A games console on finance?? If you can't pay cash for it then you can't afford it. All fine saying you can afford the payments just now but what if your financial circumstances change? Steer clear of debt! Mortgage is the only bit of credit you should ever 'need'.

I got the ps4 in February this year off Isme.com - after a discount code it cost me £299 with Gta v - I then used 12 months buy it now interest free ??? That was in February - interest free is interest free even if you have the money ! Surely it makes sense to make your money work for you if can save it and still get what you want !

But that's how the world works ! Not everybody is a risk and people like to budget also - also it could help rebuild credit (if that was an issue of course)

General rule of thumb for large scale purchases: Rent depreciating assets, buy appreciating ones. A car is very much a depreciating asset. Unless you buy an old banger on its last legs which has already lost all of its value.

Anyone got any better deals? some of these are more expensive for less, others are same price or fractionally cheaper but only the 500gb model. A lot of people criticizing the credit here but what about buying it outright, outside of buying in euros from france or germany there doesnt seem to be anything better right now.

I don't agree about these 'if you can't afford it don't buy it'.
I used to be in that camp when therr wasn't a steady income coming in - now I'm employed it's become a lot easier to manage finances and credit is a great way to allow savings to gain a little. I recently added some more sonos speakers to my system and whilst I had the money to purchase outright, I didn't see the point as the money for it is now sitting in a 5% account that over a year will make it over £20 cheaper than it would have been otherwise!

a) 0% for 25 months on purchases (so 13 months longer interest free than shopto finance)
b) Possible £25 Quidco http://www.quidco.com/post-office-credit-card/
Always check your eligibility for a credit card before you apply as a credit decline can impact your credit record. The Moneysupermarket pre eligibility tool does a soft search (no impact on credit) and gives likelihood of acceptance
