I think that buying these to feed a family is acceptable but it doesn't cost much more to buy eggs that don't involve such cruelty. I would rather go without. I will never buy cheap eggs. the longer people buy these the longer such suffering will continue. Hens are workers that are doing a job in giving us eggs. would you agree with such working conditions. .. I think not. So why accept it just because its an animal.

buying cheap eggs if its too feed children then I agree its ok but seriously it doesn't cost alot more to buy an egg that has got cruelty conected too it. I would never buy cheap eggs id rather go without. the more these eggs are bought the longer the suffering will continue.

I've got no issue with those that GENUINELY struggle to feed their family, but don't equate calling someone 'intellectually challenged' simply for professing distaste at the disgusting conditions these poor **** live under to produce cheap eggs.
I'd honestly rather eat fewer eggs than eat the cheaply produced ones. As pointed out, the difference, especially at the cheapy supermarkets, is little.

commercial free range hens have a hard life and are only allowed to live 13 months,
I know from living close to 36,000 of them.

Actually one of the advantages of cages is that they keep the egg clean.

Lot of assumptions made about the quality of life of the chickens that lay these... I disagree with animal cruelty as much as the next man (unless the next man is Bernard Matthews :wink:) but even when some brands say 'free range' they just mean they were cooped up in a barn, instead of individual cages, not running around in fields, only way to be sure is to go to a local farm shop.

I only buy free range now too because I don't agree with the living conditions of caged hens. I would rather spend more and know I didn't encourage the exploitation of a living creature to save a pound.

I couldn't give a dam about the chickens and I still buy free range.
It has been proven that free range eggs have better nutritional value and they also tend to taste better.

To all those who think caged hens are cruelly treated, get up-to-date. There are now EU regulations covering them which have improved the conditions under which these hens are kept.

To those who claim free-range eggs are fresher, that is totally incorrect as caged hen eggs sell much faster, hence they are fresher. I have always bought them and have had only one bad egg in over 40 years! I don't believe free-range are nutritionally better or that they taste better - they may taste different if their diet is different but I suspect that most commercial producers use the same commercial feeds, so it is unlikely there is any variation in diet unless there is a known variation such as corn fed hens. I think the price difference has been eggsagerated by some here.

The regular price was £1 but admittedly they went down to 80p some time ago - sorry for my late posting.

Have we discussed chick shredding yet? Considering the life that the average farmed hen has to endure, I'm not sure whether or not the shredded chicks are the luckier ones.

And don't forget that large eggs cause vent prolapse and tearing.

I have for many years only ever bought free range, yes there was new regulations for colony birds, but still they are beak to bum crammed in like living in a festival crowd, but wether "barn" or "colony" stuck inside they don't see daylight, nor are they allowed a natural body clock of seasonal day and night to keep them in constant lay, at least free range get to roam and forage and eat bugs and plants as that is a part of the free range diet. However they all get culled at 18 months old when they are classed as "end of lay" meaning they may not guarantee to produce 1 egg a day.

As it stands i will be rehoming 7 exbattery hens this weekend with help from the british hen welfare trust. These are due for slaughter this weekend now they have reached that age. Theres also a farm near with 4000 being sold @ £2.50 each from the farmer, however many remain will go for the chop.

Do yourselves and these birds a favour, look into chicken keeping and rescue the poor birds instead, they are likely to keep on laying for years to come and make great pets...eggs, no more bugs/slugs in your garden & the added bonus of being excellent pets. (if i wasn't being serious indeed it would have been "eggxcellent pets")

The only way to be sure is to actually have chickens and collect the eggs yourself.
I think many people are missing the main point which is to minimise the potential harm for the chickens, which free range (probably does).
I only buy free range eggs and detest animal cruelty but that doesn't make a eco warrior that only eats soil.

I buy cheap eggs a lot... But I do have to say that when I can afford it, Lidl's free ranged eggs are so much nicer, they're much brighter orange yolk and just much better.

I thought HUKD had got better at stamping out the RRP deals from Aldi and Lidl every week? Bizarre to see a deal like this sitting as one of the hottest of the day.

The argument of 'Caged' v 'Free Range' is pretty moot to be honest. If you want to ensure a chicken doesn't suffer or get treated poorly, don't eat eggs. Free Range chickens live a slightly better life, but it's still a **** life, the regulations regarding Free Range chickens doesn't really mean they don't suffer, it just means they suffer less than caged hens. Chick-shredding still occurs, be they caged, free range, organic, etc. Germany has just announced an end to it, through genetic advancements :-)

Good price but please buy free range, good for you, your kids and poor hens. The major superstores are selling 15 eggs for £2 only. If more of us support the free range then hopefully the prices will come down in future.

True to keeping them yourself. But I've also seen people keep chickens at home in small coops with no run, which arn't good conditions either.
My grand parents had chickens for years, but they gave the last 8 back to the farm they bought them from, it just wasn't cost effective anymore even after 'trading' eggs for veg etc. off neighbours, having to buy the feed from the likes of wilkos or pet shops. they had a big coop and the chickens had free run of the garden, they lost 2 to foxes digging up the wire fencing that was 2ft into the ground! so there is a lot to look out for, then there's the vets bills if something wrong with them, and various antifungal treatments to stop red mites etc. They are very sociable / friendly animals though, and they do miss them.

Prefer the eggs from our own chickens. Much nicer and fresher. Shop ones can be up to 56 days old. Grim

No one much seems to care where the eggs to make pre-made pastries, cakes, biscuits etc etc come from.

Have some heat to cook those eggs.

People make all sort of comments about how good free range or organic ones are, but I have never seen a comment on why these are not available in large pack sizes. With my son on a restricted diet (Gluten, Dairy, Soy-free) I use a lot of eggs for his protein intake and would have switched to free range ones permanently if they did a 30-pack. With smaller pack sizes, the price difference tends to be huge especially on the organic ones which are only available in 6-pack..

I really doubt that is the case. People who stay near a farm have shared much lower free range/organic egg prices from farm which have never been replicated in supermarket pricing - so somebody is benefiting and unless these margins are lowered I doubt a mass switch from battery eggs.

That is what I mentioned in my comment that as long as somebody is not sacrificing the margins we will not see large pack sizes and for families buying eggs in 30-pack trays will only switch once we have free range eggs in 30-pack tray.

And what I say is that people who buy free-range eggs are not the sort of people who buy eggs in trays of 30 thus making it uneconomical for the suppliers. Just because one person wants that size does not mean that others do.

Do you really think your comment is right ? I have seen many people buying couple of trays of 15-pack. They would have purchased a 30-pack tray if available. For a family of 4, buying 30 eggs together is not a lot unless you want to visit the supermarket every other day for your breakfast.

Some people will say anything to try to prove a point, I bet I have been shopping more than you and have never seen anybody buying two packs of 15 eggs at all.

It appears what you said actually applies to you. I have said what I have seen in supermarkets. Unless you eat 1 egg in a week buying 30 eggs is not a strange thing people do. It appears you stay in a area where there are no families and shop every alternate day.

I buy only barn eggs from Sainsburys which are 1.25 for 15 eggs. The size is decent and at a comparable price.
