The Teclast X98 Pro also looks like an interesting latest addition with Win 10/Lollipop, 4Gb RAM, 64Gb storage and an Atom X5.Z8300.
I've had one of these since January, I picked one up in Beijing for about £115 IIRC. They are fantastic. Mine is only 32GB. Windows 10 has given it a new lease of life. android works fine also. Battery lasts about 6 hours. You can upgrade to lollipop 5.x but I haven't bother. Slap a launcher on (smart, Nova etc), and it works like a dream. Sound is OK. Headphones connected and sound is above average. skygo didn't work on windows 8.1 on this or android. It does on windows 10. Banking apps work. (Santander and Barclay's) loads of guides on YouTube and xda. You can get this cheaper but I am voting this hot, as I sometimes post "deals" just to get HUKD feedback. I bought an apple air cover and keyboard, with a little trimming here and there it is fine. Get a screen saver as the touchscreen is not very robust, I think it came with one on, and I peeled it off thinking it was part of the wrapping :-(. Oh and the 3g slot takes a regular sim. Works fine on 3 and Vodafone. Not tried any others. You can use this as a phone if you so wish. It's a very good product. Its not top quality, its not apple, but for the price it is well worth it.

I have now ordered it from here when it was for £165.
They marked it as posted a week ago. Hopefully it won't take too long.

Likewise, I wouldn't order from Gearbest even if it were free! I've had nothing but trouble with all orders I've placed with them including the Teclast. They advertise items as being in stock when they don't actually have them. Then they try to make you accept inferior alternatives upon enquiring about the delay. I too ordered from Banggood at the end, and not to say they're perfect but my tablet arrived within a month and I've used it happily for the last couple of months without any problems.

Gear best take forever to post items papa,I got shafted by dealsmachine on my Teclast x98 plus 3G.The site said in stock and ready to ship, but after I paid for it,it was out of stock for a week yet said in stock on their website. So I started a dispute with PayPal,and I'm just waiting for my money back ;-( So I've ordered from bang good now with the extras, hopefully I get it within a month ;-)

this is definitely not the CHEAPEST way of buying a Teclast! aliexpress/kimovil/ other china sites are around $190 delivered last I checked
That sounds similar to my battery actually. Maybe a bios update is worth it for you but if you are happy and it doesn't have any major problems then maybe you don't need to bother.
Yeah HL2 works great even running at native resolution (which is crazy) I bought a load of old games in the recent GOG sale and have a few on my steam account as well. So far everything works great. I think if pushed you can get skyrim working as well but I think that may be going too far. I do have consoles and a laptop if I want to play more demanding games. I have a charger at work and home so battery life isn't really a problem and I've also got a portable charger if I need it to last a little longer out and about.
Thanks for that Chris. Will likely update to newest BIOS and see if that makes the difference re battery.
Keep us updated if you encounter any further issues as I will too. Hope it continues to work well for you. Despite the teething issues, they are great tablets.
I'll be looking to install HL2 and possibly my fav game of all, Unreal Tournament 2004 when I get home! Can't believe these games work on a tablet!

Cool, thanks for that. What BIOS are you on? I am wondering whether to update mine (I know 2.02 is supposed to improve battery life).
Interestingly, the battery life on mine isn't great. I don't know if it's a faulty battery, but it will generally only last 2.5-3 hours for a movie or, say, iPlayer or Youtube. Playing an Android game such as Fallout Shelter it'll last 2 hours which I feel is pretty poor considering many reviewers say it'll last a good bit longer than this. I guess I could probably get 4-5 hours browsing internet (screen brightness at minimal to get this though). Put it another way, my old iPad 3 lasts a good deal longer. On windows 10 it lasts a little longer, perhaps 30-45 minutes longer when watching a movie, browsing etc.
I love HL2. so that works ok on this tablet? I may have to find my old copy and play it on this. Amazing that a game that needed a good PC to run when the game was released now plays on a tablet!

Yea I'm really happy with mine, I had a few problems to start which were mostly fixed with a bios update. Android battery life is not good, really hoping someone at xda will make a rom for this tablet. I've not had any throttling but I'm also not going to push it to its limit (half life 2 is the most demanding game I will run on it) Android games seems to work great and I've not noticed throttling there either but the battery drains so fast when gaming in android.
Like you I am so happy with it for the money, without testing an air 3g I wouldn't really know how they compare but I would guess the 3g is the better bet, its cheaper and has better battery life and support. I don't think there is much difference in performance either when you take into account the heat problems. The 4gb ram probably helps a bit with multitasking.
For mine I bought a Logitech ultrathin keyboard cover for £15 which works quite well, the keyboard is great and it sits in the propped up position but the tablet doesn't connect on the magnetic strip (I just place them together in a soft pouch)
I also got a otg charging usb hub which works fine but the charge going through the hub isn't enough to keep the tablet charged and it just slow how fast the battery drains.

Nice. I'm looking at getting another one for my brother so just considering what to tab to go for. It seems whatever you buy that's one of these cheap Chinese tablets, there's always something not quite right. How are you doing in terms of thermals? I read the Pro throttles and often shuts down due to heat issues so hope yours is behaving itself.
Still, considering what you get for the price, I'm over-the-moon with mine despite the charging issue which has been somewhat remedied with the Aukey charger.
Also, thanks to Ashe's recommendation, I bought the following which has fixed the issue with the headphones and the 'tinny' sound. Actually, it sounds incredible with a good pair of headphones so it must have a good onboard soundcard: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231430050974

I didn't actually, I ended up getting the x98 pro instead as the air 3g just wasn't coming back in stock. I'm pretty happy with mine but it definitely has some quirks. I think the 3g is really the better device as the battery life is better, it has 3g and most importantly it has xda support. Charging is pretty slow on mine no matter what charger I use but it works when on at least (mainly use an ipad charger)

Did you finally get yours, Chris? What are your thoughts if delivered?
Overall, still loving this tablet but a word of warning, my tablet doesn't charge when on. I had to turn it off to charge it and many people have the same problem (see XDA forums).
Received the charger last week and finally I can charge the tablet whilst on, although it generally only gets to 75 - 90% before, for whatever reason, stop charging. Ok, it's still not the best solution but I can now use it and charge at the same time. It also charges the tablet much more quickly - 4 hours approx (going from 0 - 100% when off and 3 hours or so from 20-80% when on) compared to the dodgy Chinese supplied charger which takes 6-7 hours and gets worryingly hot.
Hope it helps if you have this charging issue.

The v2 version with 4GB Ram and 64GB storage looks to be pretty good to me.
This link will link the EU warehouse version, which is out of stock, but the China warehouse verison is £30 less
Thanks for letting us know mate. I've bought one. Just wondering if you know any tips on battery life? My tablet is extremely inconsistent with battery. It'll go from 100% - 90% as expected, but then nosedives and I find I only get about 90 mins to an hour of a game or movie using Android. Is that similar to your own experience? I read before about someone berating the battery life and so letting it die, then charging it to 100% and somehow that improves things. I'll try this in the coming days but currently having to charge it wherever and whenever I can unlike my old iPad which has superior battery life.
Still, aside form that and the headphone issue which should be remedied with the cable jack, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I ordered the Lollipop version and that had 4.4 on anyway.
My audio cable arrived, and just to confirm it fixes the audio issue when connected to headphones through that. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231430050974 is what I bought. It feels like a cheap cable (which it was), but it does the job.

My initial order had Lollipop/W10. I switched to a model with 4.4 Kitkat/W10 instead and only a few pennies more. It was this model which comes in and out of stock on a regular basis and is currently not in stock but keep an eye on it daily: http://m.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_227137.html?wid=3
I updated it to Lollipop thanks to Ashe's steps earlier in this thread and I totally recommend anyone to do this. I'm a noob at these things but wasn't difficult as long as you go through the steps correctly and took less than an hour to do everything. Hope it help.

I've been thinking of doing so. Which alternative did you choose? And how has it been so far? I still don't get why they claim items are in stock when they clearly arent; it's only a recipe for customer aggravation that outweighs the benefit of holding onto people's cash, I think. They must have their reasons, I guess.

Sorry for slow reply - currently away so can't get online as often as I'd like.
I've not heard from gearbest despite them saying a colleague would get in touch with an answer so not impressed about that. I had to take the bull by the horns and fortunately a friend had a spare Windows key which I used so that's rectified the issue for me. Not sure what you can do as it would seem Gearbest don't really care about anything relating to aftersales, therefore I hope you get something sorted, otherwise you may have to buy a key or find, er, other means.
badasschris, did you get yours yet?
expositouk, that happened to me so I bought a near identical tablet (also from EU wrehouse) that was labelled also as 'in stock' at time of purchase and that was dispatched within a few days so cancelled the initial order after 10 days or so of no movement. My refund hit my bank account a week or so later so its always an option to do that and cancel whatever order hasn't been sent.

Totally misleading on this occasion!

I've got the same problem re Win 10. I've asked Gearbest and suggest you do the same. I've had a reply to say that someone is looking into it.
I'd also suggest you upgrade to Android 5.0 if you haven't already. Ashe kindly posted steps on how to do it on this thread (post #122) and there's a lot of info on XDA forums (including tutorials) which Ashe posted links to also. I'm a noob but really wasn't difficult at all. It took less than an hour to do everything needed and get the tablet up and running with a clean install of Lollipop which rids it of the Chinese apps, the many bugs and obviously the all-important update to Lollipop.

Now I've had a couple days to use the tablet, I'm still very impressed with it. Will hope to install AutoCad on it this weekend and Office.
As for keyboards, I bought the one Jimbo recommended (at least I think it's the same one) from these guys on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221863210194?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I put in a best offer of £16 which was accepted. I received it today (great service from the seller) and I'm really impressed. It'll be perfect for when travelling. Before this, I used the Logitech ultrathin keyboard cover for my old iPad and despite it being a quality product, I found it very limiting when using the keyboard since there is only one position you can set it which doesn't give enough of a screen angle in many day-to-day uses, such as on a train or plane. The keyfolio will solve that issue for me thanks to the many angles you can set it to, including lay-flat and pitched. Overall, amazing value for £16. In fact, the keyboard/case and tablet for £140ish is ridiculous value for money.

Charger-wise, I'm using a Blackberry Playbook 2A charger - these were once selling cheaply, unfortunately more expensive now - but I suspect any decent charger that does 2A or perhaps slightly less may do the trick. I'll have to look at the charger in the box though to see what rating it is - my 2A charger certainly doesn't charge it 25% per hour.
I haven't got the cable yet to try to fix the audio issue, coming from China - will just have to see. I just picked a cable from eBay - chose http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231430050974 - will give feedback as and when it arrives.
Bit annoying about the Windows 10 activation issue. Mine is still showing as activated as it was when I first checked it, but wondering if a potential problem, especially if I ever have to reinstall/factory reset.
I've decided against a keyboard case for now - want something fairly light to keep it in without increasing the size too much.

I found that my Z3 Compact and my wife's Sammy microUSB charger are fine with the tablet so it must have something to do with the ampage? However, these charge slower than the charger it came with so I may plump for something like you recommended.
It's a great tab though it can be a bit slow changing between Android and Windows. It also gives a black screen for a good few minutes when I shut it down but it's nothing to worry about as it will come back on. I'm still setting mine up with all the apps and programs I want. It'll be brilliant to have a tablet I can work on using MS Office and then revert to Android in the evenings to play the odd game, Hangouts etc.
I hope you get yours soon!

Finally received mine from EU warehouse (came from London). Yodel delayed the parcel by 2 days so should've received it on Monday. Anyway, it came with a EU - UK adapter (bought the EU warehouse version with EU plug). However, I'll be using my own micro-USB charger.
First impressions are excellent. Nice weight and build quality. The screen is superb (should be with same screen as the iPad Air).
I noticed all the Chinese apps and such when booting into Android (4.4 installed on mine NOT 5.0 as advertised) for the first time so decided to take the plunge and put Mirek's Lollipop Rom on it.
I'm a noob but followed Ashe's method (post #122 of this thread) and used the links he kindly provided. It was a cinch and really not daunting at all. Took only a few minutes to download and install the MFT tools. With that installed you can then get yourself ready to install the Rom on the tablet. Make sure you read Ashe's method and also the more detailed steps on the XDA forum right down to the letter. If you do it right, you shouldn't have any issue and it only took about 10 minutes to flash the new Rom onto the tablet and then set it up.
As with Ashe, when setting up Android the first time, it crashed then restarted but worked second time round without a hitch. Now using the much cleaner Lollipop which is far, far better and there's no Chinese apps. There's also a useful shortcut to boot to windows.
Also, a number of people have issues with the audio port. Ashe, what product was it you purchased to rectify this and has it addressed the issue? I can jimmy the audio jack out a little and it's fine but would prefer to have some kind of permanent fix if an adapter is available. The speakers are perfectly good though.
Since I've had it only a couple hours I'm so far really impressed with this tablet. Seems an absolute bargain at £125. Bought myself a Kensington Keyfolio keyboard for £16 and a screen protector from Gearbest for £1.50 specifically for the X98 (it comes with a screen protector attached so I'll just keep that until the other one turns up): http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_234431.html
Just a couple of cons I've noticed:
i) Win 10 for me isn't activated, stating the key is tied to another machine. Does anyone know a workaround as I'd prefer not to have to buy a separate license?
ii) It doesn't appear to charge with some of my microUSB chargers which I was hoping it would. Again, does anyone know why or a product I could use to charge it. I don't quite trust the Chinese one supplied which is then attached to the EU - UK adapter and gets quite hot. Charges quite quickly though. Well, far quicker than my iPad 3 (about 25% in an hour which I'm happy with).
Thanks to all the guys on here such as Ashe, sbellseb, and jimbo19 who have provided lots of helpful info and links for noobs like me about using the X98. I was very hesitant buying a Chinese tab but after these posts and checking vids on Youtube, it's a very worthwhile purchase. Will reply to any question anyone may have.

Still no update on any of my orders, including an MXIII android box I bought on Tuesday - I'm beginning to think they just don't like me!

The Teclast X98 Pro also looks like an interesting latest addition with Win 10/Lollipop, 4Gb RAM, 64Gb storage and an Atom X5.Z8300.

That is weird. I've tried it on my phone as well and it's in stock and remains so on both browsers I use.
Try searching 'Teclast X98' in Gearbest's search, choose the one priced £120.97/$183.89. It's from China but change it to EU warehouse and price should change to £124.95 and you can 'add to basket'. Make sure it's EU plug, not UK. Hope that works.

Thanks Ashe, that's very informative. I'll check a few more Youtube vids to get an idea of Lollipop Rom and see if it's worth upgrading. I'll likely do it simply to have a fresh install and none of the Chinese apps.
Also, do you get a screen protector with it or do we need to buy it separately?
Looking into keyboard folio cases and think I'm going to go for the 'Kensington keyfolio pro with removable bluetooth keyboard'. Will come in around £17-18 with eBay's make offer and reviews on Amazon are decent (4/5 average).
Chris or anyone else who's interested, the Eu version of this tablet is back in stock @ £124.95. I've ordered this as well and will cancel whichever tablet hasn't dispatched (likely be the UK model we ordered 10 days ago). Link: http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_232115.html?wid=3

First, to confirm Windows 10 came activated (and in English, gave option to select on first boot).
In terms of flashing a ROM, it's one of the easiest devices I've done, but obviously people do at their own risk and experience level. I'm fairly experienced at doing it on various devices, so was confident enough to give it a go on the first day I got it. Didn't take long, maybe 30 to 45 minutes reading up and then installing/extracting everything. Actual ROM install took probably 5-10 minutes, then 10 minutes going through Lollipop first setup.
One thing to note is that it'll start flashing as soon as the USB cable is connected.
Also, when I booted into Lollipop the first time, it went through the first setup procedure and said something about doing mobile activation, and then crashed/rebooted. Since then, seems to have been OK.
The UI seems slower in Lollipop than my Hudl2 is, but then it is a higher resolution on the same CPU, so probably to be expected. Not used it much though. Windows seems fine from limited use, bit disappointed that boot isn't slightly quicker, I don't think the flash memory in it is particularly fast.
As stated, has the issue with headphones when it's in completely, sounds OK when slightly 'out' of the port. Ordered what I hope is the converter cable.
Pleased with it so far though, even though not tried much on it. Nice having a high resolution device for Windows.

As another update, just replaced the version of Android on it (so many weird Chinese apps...) with the 5.0 rom here (according to the device model I got):
Thanks for all the updates Ashe. So, is it relatively easy to update to a fresh version of Lollipop from Kitkat and thus cleaning out all the Chinese junk apps that come preinstalled? How long does it take for instance?
And what are your initial impressions of using it so far? Also, is/was Windows activated? A number of people mention on Youtube you need a Windows key as it's not activated
I'll keep an eye out for the EU model from EU warehouse so thanks for the link :smirk:

For anyone who's waiting to get this. My order was stuck on processing so I replied and this is the reply I got:
'The item your ordered is a hot sale and there have been significant supply issues with the manufacturer. We are as disappointed as you and feel let down by the manufacturer. We wish to apologize unreservedly for this situation.
1)Wait a little more
Could you wait for a few more days?
We expect the item to be back on date will back in stock on 7-15 business days, we will ship your item on the same day after the quality check.
If the item is more expensive than the one your order, we will send ask to cover the difference. If you the choose a cheaper item we will refund you the extra amount.'
I'm unhappy since when I ordered the tablet was 'in stock' and should've been with me by now. Since I need something for mid October it doesn't look like it'll arrive by then. Gearbest don't have any similar tablet available from their EU warehouse so can't do option 2. Frustrated to say the least and may well just cancel if there's no update by next Wed/Thurs.

Hi guys, really interested in buying this however, a couple of questions:
1.I see there's various roms for this device, detoxed if that makes sense so how do you install these android roms?
2.I'm confused on the gearbest.eu, how do I choose that option and I'm seeing people paying with various prices here so is the link for the deal the best price. Ideally I like to have the 4gb version as well.

Yes, that's the one I'm going to go for thanks to a previous poster on this thread who kindly provided the link. I believe this one comes with 64GB as opposed to previous models with 32GB. Like you say, it's coming from Europe so no worries re import duty.
sbellseb, just a quick question if you don't mind. Is there any need to flash the Rom's? I've read a good number of people who have done this for Windows and Android or should it work fine out of the box, without a broken Google Playstore?
Chris, after watching a few youtube vids and also the XDA forums, I think I'm going to go for this. It seems rude not to at £125! Will look into buying a keyboard, case and screen protector too. This looks good for £14 wouldn't you say?: http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_239759.html

Office 365 is built in free. I have had one since January. No crashes, no overheating. Works well on windows and android. Even slicker now on windows 10 in tablet mode. Read all my comments, you won't be disappointed. Same size as ipad air, just don't presume cases will be 100% ok as buttons for power volume etc and camera are not in the same loxations, but can easily be overcome. I don't even use the camera so no issues for me.

Thanks for that Chris. Yeah, I'm swaying more towards this since the Windows OS is quite a big deal. I'm getting a bit fed up traveling with my iPad and laptop which I only use for docs and s/sheets. Using this tablet for that would be a godsend since it would kill two birds with one stone.
Like yourself though, I'm a little concerned with build quality and warranty. I'm going through as many post-purchase reviews and Youtube vids as I can to try and ascertain if, on balance, it is a tablet that won't die after a year. and therefore worth purchasing. This is very interesting.
I'm looking for a tablet under £200 and was hoping to get my hands on a refurbed Z2 tablet but this floats my boat.
As badasschris asks, if I buy this will it be easy to use as an everyday tablet for people who aren't massively technically minded like myself? I really just want a tablet to do web browsing, a few games, watching films etc but having Windows on it is a massive benefit since I can work on documents and s/sheets when away with work.
Do these work well or do they freeze/crash a lot? What sort of tablet does this compare with.....iPad Air 2, Sony Z2 etc? Thanks very much in advance if anyone can help. It appears a lot of tech for the money I just want to be sure it's a good fit for me.
badasschris to cheaperbythe12
21 Sep 151#65
The z2 is thinnner, lighter and waterproof and has a better screen size for watching videos. This has a better screen for web browsing and can run full windows. I suppose if you are going to use it more for games/videos then the z2 is probably better but if you will do more web browsing document editing then this is probably better. That's in theory though, I'm still sceptical that a non brand tablet will work fine and not just die after a few months use. I haven't ordered one yet but it seems such a good deal for the money

It really is as simple as setting up a new phone or any device. Google play works out of the box. The trickiest bit is changing Chinese to English but its easy. Again on xda or YouTube should you need it. You can freeze or delete most of the Chinese apps anyway. Don't be put off, they are fantastic. It's like two tablets in one. I use mine more than my ipad. It's quicker, not as refined but if you have never had an ipad you wouldn't know. Once you have used your five lives on Cady crush, reboot to the other OS for another five goes LOL.

Yes. When you start up the tablet you choose which you want to run. Next time you can choose the other. Think of it like a reversible belt. You can choose whether the belt is worn showing the black side or the brown side but not both together. This is a reversible tablet which can be Android or Windows as you choose.

Personal recommendation only but I think Windows 8.1 works better with this tablet. I think of Windows 10 being like a new Windows 7 and it's clearly aimed at laptops and desktops. Sadly MS threw out most of the tablet support which works so well in 8.1.

Mate has this with Android/Windows 8.1.
She likes the fact that if a 3G call/data sim is installed, it makes the Android OS in to a proper phone and 3G data device.

20 Sep 152#41
I have both the Air II and 3G. The 3G has a slightly better touchscreen.
Good devices, brilliant to use windows on. On Android, I think you can remove the Chinese apps if you can successfully root it. Devices tend to fit a lot of the iPad air cases and things which is handy.
Windows doesn't need the space it used to and can run even with only 16GB allocated, especially with wimboot.
The major drawback is that anything you need for rooting, bios updates and drivers is in Chinese. This makes tweaking and hacking an exercise in frustration. You are unlikely to be totally satisfied with the out of the box experience and there are lots of ways to break things badly if you make mistakes. Lots of things to read on xda developers about it. Ask yourself if you have the experience and patience to work at it and you can have a terrific device. For most ordinary users I'd advise to steer clear and get something else.

Mine lasts under a day on light use.
There were thermal issues on the original android and it was bloated with unreadble/unusable junk apps. The android needs an unofficial Rom to make usable. The headphone socket is dodgy: you dont push it all the way in or it wont work, it needs to be halfway. When you remove it, theres no sound at all, until you reboot. The screen can freeze as well, but is fixed by lock on/off.
*Edit: Forgot to mention. Mine (Teclast X98 Air 3G 64Gb) came from Banggood China. And I had to pay another £15 once it was in the UK or they would'nt deliver it, so be aware of import fee if you go via the same route.

Cheers for the link aceshigh - tablet was still in my basket so allowed me to order

I received the tablet yesterday. Would have been sooner but Yodel didnt deliver it on the friday. Its a pretty decent tablet and the build quality is quite good. When you turn it on you get a boot menu screen where you can choose between Android and Windows. Both run pretty quick and the screen is lovely. Windows is scaled to 200% by default as the native resolution makes the fonts and icons absolutely minute. The battery seems to take an age to charge and that was using the charger that came with it wheich was a foreign charger with an adapter. It is rated at 2.5 amps and I didnt have another charger at that level so I used that otherwise it would probably take even longer to charge. The only downer seems to be that the Android on it is version 4.4.4 and not 5 as advertised and there are a few chinese apps that cant be uninstalled (Baidu, ifly). Overall I would say its a no brainer if you are looking for one of these type of tablets.

Flash can be sideloaded onto android, but you do need a flash capable browser. dolphin/firefox/chrome do not have flash support, other browsers on the play store might?

Has anyone any idea if this will support Flash player and BBC Iplayer? As i live in Turkey where they will not develop 4G but will develop 4.5G yes I know I don't understand why, then 3G will be fine for me in the medium term.

i know I sound like a bot promoting something, but I can assure you I'm not. the guy doing those reviews goes to town on thermals, benchmarks, comparisons. even shows how to mod with better thermal cooling. I'm going to pull trigger on the pro v2 if/ when it gets released. hopefully addressing the throttling issues on the pro. air doesn't suffer from this.

interesting!!!! that seems even better, it has android 5.0 not 4.4 like this one!
really trying not to spend my money, let's see how long that lasts!!
I've actually ordered one of these from Gearbest yesterday. Awaiting delivery of it today. Ordered from their eu warehouse for £124.

it has a micro sd slot if that helps.
I'd also tether my phone too seeing as I have a 20gb data plan.
I actually think this tablet is more powerful that my laptop.....

I picked up a Galaxy Tab A 9.7, off Amazon and I am mightily pleased. I had two first gen. Nexus 7. I don't trust Apple, never have.
More to the point, I am sticking with a company, I trust Samsung, they may never be the best, at everything like Microsoft, but they integrate smoothly across platforms.
When problems arise; it's the User's lack of knowledge which, leads to a quick usurp of finger pointing.
Nice tablet, love that high res display and ideal that's it's running both OSs.

Also available from within the EU from (non HUKD approved) geekbuying.com (Spanish warehouse) for £152.85 + shipping. It's the windows 8 version but will upgrade to 10.
I had the non 3G version of this. Has the same LG retina panel as used in the iPad Air. Worked really well when running windows but Android wasn't so hot.

I am looking at this one
Teclast X98 Pro

Still, considering what you get for the price, I'm over-the-moon with mine despite the charging issue which has been somewhat remedied with the Aukey charger.
Also, thanks to Ashe's recommendation, I bought the following which has fixed the issue with the headphones and the 'tinny' sound. Actually, it sounds incredible with a good pair of headphones so it must have a good onboard soundcard:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231430050974
Overall, still loving this tablet but a word of warning, my tablet doesn't charge when on. I had to turn it off to charge it and many people have the same problem (see XDA forums).
A guy on another website mentioned he bought the following and that supplied enough ampage to the tablet to use it when on and it still charge:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Qualcomm-Certified-Aukey-Charger-Included/dp/B00KD1XQT8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1447073084&sr=8-2&keywords=aukey+quick+charge+2+0
This link will link the EU warehouse version, which is out of stock, but the China warehouse verison is £30 less

Still, aside form that and the headphone issue which should be remedied with the cable jack, I'm very happy with my purchase.
My audio cable arrived, and just to confirm it fixes the audio issue when connected to headphones through that. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231430050974 is what I bought. It feels like a cheap cable (which it was), but it does the job.

I updated it to Lollipop thanks to Ashe's steps earlier in this thread and I totally recommend anyone to do this. I'm a noob at these things but wasn't difficult as long as you go through the steps correctly and took less than an hour to do everything. Hope it help.
Anyway I can't talk, Mr Yodel is enjoying using mine somewhere in the UK.
It plays Asphalt driving game in glorious 3d so has no issues with anything ive thrown at it yet. Great for me
My Windows 10 Home wasn't activated and came shipped with Chinese Android 4.4.4
Has any one managed to activate genuinely as I don't want to use a activator?
As for keyboards, I bought the one Jimbo recommended (at least I think it's the same one) from these guys on eBay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221863210194?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I hope you get yours soon!
what are they REALLY like?
Im about to buy a lower spec Lenovo for more money. But the W10 is catching my eye. does it DO everything? Anything that you regret?
Bought myself a Kensington Keyfolio keyboard for £16 and a screen protector from Gearbest for £1.50 specifically for the X98 (it comes with a screen protector attached so I'll just keep that until the other one turns up):
http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_234431.html
NorthantsPete, I'll let you know what I think of mine when I receive it later this week but a few guys have one on here and appear to be happy with their purchase. There's also some good Youtube reviews such as this one (reviewer has the more limited 32GB version not 64GB which this deal has):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmaLKDaJeWg
BTW the tablet is back in stock in EU warehouse (if you choose the win 8.1 dual boot version)
I've asked them to cancel my initial order for the UK model so hope that all goes through smoothly. What a wait and like you say, I hope it's worth it!
I've never been charged yet in a dozen or so purchases.
Can never guarantee though.
Just concerned it will have no support and it'll fall apart/get no support when windows 10.1 comes out as they made a revision on this and said their 4.4 wont update to 5.0 when its capable. And that windows 8 wont update to 10 on the slightly older model. My mobile was the same, I had no upgrade to the OS the whole year I had it, none coming, no idea if the company is still going!
Cant decide, ive bought chinese in the past and got burned 3 times
The X98 will need a little work to get it up and running but there's a lot of info here, on XDA forums and Youtube to help you through. Once you've got it setup though, you're golden!
Still no update on any of my orders, including an MXIII android box I bought on Tuesday - I'm beginning to think they just don't like me!
No mobile/3G though.
http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Teclast-X98-Air-II-9-7--Dual-OS-Win8---Android-4-4-Tablet-PC-Intel-Z3736F-Quad-Core-2-16GHz-2048-1536-IPS-Screen-2GB-64G-HDMI-Bluetooth-WiFi---Sliver-350953.html
Try searching 'Teclast X98' in Gearbest's search, choose the one priced £120.97/$183.89. It's from China but change it to EU warehouse and price should change to £124.95 and you can 'add to basket'. Make sure it's EU plug, not UK. Hope that works.
Link:

In terms of flashing a ROM, it's one of the easiest devices I've done, but obviously people do at their own risk and experience level. I'm fairly experienced at doing it on various devices, so was confident enough to give it a go on the first day I got it. Didn't take long, maybe 30 to 45 minutes reading up and then installing/extracting everything. Actual ROM install took probably 5-10 minutes, then 10 minutes going through Lollipop first setup.
From what I remember:
a) Installed MFT tools/drivers etc - here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62823535&postcount=5
b) Download ROM according to device. I got the full v5 Lollipop C5J6 from here - tablet shows model number on back: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62032369&postcount=10626
c) Followed flashing instructions here - making sure to select the flash that only does system (and wipe data in this case): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61852850&postcount=10160
Nice having a high resolution device for Windows.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62823666&postcount=9
And what are your initial impressions of using it so far? Also, is/was Windows activated? A number of people mention on Youtube you need a Windows key as it's not activated
I'll keep an eye out for the EU model from EU warehouse so thanks for the link :smirk:
That said, not even going to try the plug they supplied, using a decent Blackberry Playbook 2A charger.
Windows 10 on it, haven't yet checked the Android version. EDIT: 4.4.4 as expected (lot of Chinese apps!) Thinking I may try to replace with a version from XDA.
That said, even if unhappy, may be worth checking every now and then to see if any version comes back into stock.

Chris or anyone else who bought one last week, has yours dispatched yet? Mine still stuck on 'processing'. Wondering if they actually had stock when we ordered otherwise surely it would have dispatched by now?
It fits perfectly . Obviously the cut outs for the camera are in wrong place , but I wont be using them anyway and you could always modify yourself. All ports are accessible apart from the micro hdmi which is covered (again you could modify). I got it for £15 delivered from Ebay (via best offer) . It feels and looks like a very premium quality case
I managed to get BT headset working perfectly this morning on android and windows , but rebooted and then had same issues again, Headphones I can get working every time by not pushing the jack fully in (So I am sure this is to do with the type of jack )
Have tried both iphone and my note 4 earphones. can only get sound to work properly by sliding the jack plug out slightly. So probably need something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-M-To-F-3-5mm-Jack-Headset-Converter-Adapter-for-iPhone-to-Nokia-Audio-Port-/251717928810?hash=item3a9b8ec76a . Although that won't help me with my BT headphones
Also comes with an otg cable and a uk plug adapter.
One issue and I'm sure it must be a driver is the bt sound is crap.
Also Jim, have you tried headphone socket and does it work? I heard a few people reviewing it that it doesn't function or you need to 'Jimmy' it into position. :smirk:
I have a similar Logitech keyboard (the one that went super hot a few weeks back for £7.50) which will be good when in the house but also purchased this for £15 which doubles up as a case too:
http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_239758.html
Coming from China so will take a good few weeks - just hope it arrives before mid October as I'll be traveling for work then leisure.
As for screen protectors, what about something like this?:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Screen-Protector-Apple-2-Pack/dp/B00FDIKV3A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442916642&sr=8-1&keywords=ipad+air+protective+screen
There is this one specifically for the X98 but no reviews and slightly more expensive than those for iPad's:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/BROTECT%C2%AE-Screen-Protector-Teclast-Anti-Fingerprint/dp/B013FA22MU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442916693&sr=8-1&keywords=x98+protective+screen
Gearbest sent me a message to say all is good with the checks so they're now working on getting it dispatched which is good.
so I can connect stuff and keep it charged at the same time and I'll be using it with my logitech tablet keybaord which is a fantastic keyboard but obviously another thing you have to carry around http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Logitech-Bluetooth-Keyboard-for-iPad-iPad-2-Tablet-Sleek-Folio-UK-Layout-/221793318734?hash=item33a3e9774e
Jimbo, let us know your thoughts when you receive today if you can :smirk:
Any ideas what screen protector you're going to go for? Like yourself, I'm not interested in the camera so not bothered if an iPad Air protector will cover the camera hole.
Any idea how long these take for full charge from flat ?
I have an asus T100 and that takes a couple of hours (but only if you use the supplied charger) otherwise it can take 12-15 hours
http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_227137.html?wid=3
Just make sure you choose 'Eu' for warehouse and change price to GBP . Came in at £124.32. Hope that helps.
Should receive mine next week sometime. Can't wait!
3.What is battery life like on Android, last thing I want is some device which has great specs yet can't last more than 6 hours.
sbellseb, just a quick question if you don't mind.
This looks good for £14 wouldn't you say?:

I'll let you know my impressions when I receive it and thanks to all posters. I'd never have thought about buying such a device if it wasn't for some of the contributions from the likes of sbellseb. Cheers.
as this other place its about £130 and delivered from europe. Seems a better purchase
Like yourself though, I'm a little concerned with build quality and warranty. I'm going through as many post-purchase reviews and Youtube vids as I can to try and ascertain if, on balance, it is a tablet that won't die after a year. and therefore worth purchasing. Will let you know if I go for it. Thanks again.
She likes the fact that if a 3G call/data sim is installed, it makes the Android OS in to a proper phone and 3G data device.
The data Sim also works for Windows making it a 3G windows tablet.
GPS works well too.
Is there a guide to install windows 10?
I'd like one but the bit that puts me off are those keyboard cases. I've had a few with for various Android tablets and not found one that I liked. My friend has a surface and that design is far nicer.
Unfortunately I won't use it enough to justify Surface prices.
Also did you see the keyboard case? http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_239758.html?vip=51907
Fat thumbs lol
really trying not to spend my money, let's see how long that lasts!!

I'd also tether my phone too seeing as I have a 20gb data plan.
I actually think this tablet is more powerful that my laptop.....
More to the point, I am sticking with a company, I trust Samsung, they may never be the best, at everything like Microsoft, but they integrate smoothly across platforms.
When problems arise; it's the User's lack of knowledge which, leads to a quick usurp of finger pointing.

Personally I'd use my phone as hotspot anyway.
I wonder if 64GB is enough storage. We all know how much space Windows likes to use.
I had the non 3G version of this. Has the same LG retina panel as used in the iPad Air. Worked really well when running windows but Android wasn't so hot.
It can also be bought for slightly less from the non hotukdeals approved site here
