A lot of eBay sellers are doing Argos pickup whereby the courier delivers to Argos stores for you to collect at your convenience. Useful for if you do not have anyone at home during weekdays.

I picked up a used E6420 on eBay for my Mother - just waiting on it being delivered. I might be needing a cheap laptop myself so this might be worth a look. I've already bought the adapter for the dvd bay so I can put in a bigger hdd plus a small ssd...

Anyone know what the actual battery life was on these laptops?

"min of 1hr" is a bit vague.

Considering a new laptop as our Acer is getting long in tooth, and one of the issues with that is battery life. Bought a new one, but still only lasting about 1-2 hours on a charge.
shakerstevens to johnson293
11 Sep 15 #7
Its probably because its a refurb laptop it won't be a brand new battery but what why are saying is they will ensure the included battery can at least last an hour.

This is a excellent laptop for work however not for gaming. The differnce is the latitude machines are business class and not the cheap machines that you can pick up from the local supermarket.

My battery lasts around 3 hours however I am using a cut down version of windows. the great thing is that you can add extra batteries to this if you wish to remove the cd drive and also has a place at tthe bottom to add a slice battery. I am a laptop repair tech and I love these maches and use it as my main system. works great with linux too!
fishmaster to johnson293
11 Sep 15 #41
The battery life of a second user battery can NOT be preset to a determined level, the seller should give a threshold of battery life of which if it lasts below that threshold it can be replaced under the warranty. The minimum of 1 hour is therefore the threshold.

The less complicated answer to your question is the battery life will be at least one hour or more and you won't know until you buy the unit and no one else will know apart from the seller if they did a checksheet on the laptop and wrote it down.

Not bad. And 1280x800 is a nice resolution to work with. It may not be Full HD, but at this price you could do a lot worse.

Nothing stellar that I have seen at the moment, there is an [E6420] on eBay for £143.99 that is a 2nd Gen i5 that is also on the money.

Graphics performance and power consumption is greatly improved on second gen i5s onwards, and more worthy of consideration. This would suffice for your needs but as a very dated machine even compared to the dated second gen i5 it doesn't offer anywhere near the same bang for buck.

Obviously if you are on a budget it is 'ok' but as said nothing stellar...worth waiting or spending that bit more I think.

I use an SSD in my mSata port of my Lenovo X220 (to retain the hard disk bay for general storage) and even though mSata is slower than using a 2.5" replacement there is definitely a marked speed increase, especially using Windows 10 which boots quickly anyway.

11 Sep 15 #20
Absolutely...its just a collect + service the same as many mail order companies provide to convenience stores for collection.

Obviously Argos the same as any store that allows couriers to deliver parcels for collection by the end customer get money for the service themselves, probably is not much commission in it but if you have a shop and the staff to deal with the occasional parcel it is always going to make good business sense.

No monies not tight but I bought a dell 15 3531 brand new 12mths ago. It has no DVD drive and I haven't been able to get an external to work on it. It's windows 8.1 and I wish I had bought one with windows 7 plus a DVDs writer.

I actually bought a Samsung dvd which was recommended for the dell 15 but it didn't work. I Think the problem is windows 8.1 think I'll try windows 10 and if that don't work I'll get rid and buy this machine with extra ram and SSD.

Do they fit it, or do they send the ssd to me for me to fit?

11 Sep 15 1 #31
I can second this.

Upgraded this Inspiron 15 N5030 to a T4500 dual core CPU and stuck an SSD in it - it went from completely unusable to bloody lovely! Okay, can't play posh games on it, but it's got more use in the last few months that it had in the previous 4 years. Sticking an SSD, any SSD (don't stress over price/performance - a small cheap one from a reliable source would be fine), in an old machine is about the best thing you can do. The only box that I've not seen it be *completely* transforming for are in old Intel Atom netbooks. Even an old 2003 DIY Pentium 4 (pre hyperthreading) box that was dog slow and unusable was totally transformed (and that MB supported only SATA-I cos back then SATA was new.)

I wouldn't use this for gaming, it would be mainly home use, but also need to be capable of running AutoCAD and Revit software for work.

Current laptop has a 15" screen compared to the 14" on this, so having read comments, I'm also pricing up the alternative of buying a 120GB SSD (£50 for drive and fitting kit) and more memory for mine (current has 3GB, can get 2x4GB for £40).

I know this has an i5 chip compared to the AMD in my current Acer, so with upgrades to memory and hard drive on this refurb, it would be almost £180 compared to £90 to upgrade to SSD and more ram on current one.

Hmm, decisions.

Processor gets 2411 on passmark, not too bad considering the age... My Z3735F notebook isn't that slow and only gets ~890. I know benchmarks aren't everything but I find passmark is a good barometer for testing performance.

Okayish. Personally, I don't see the need for 14" screens unless it's an Ultrabook which it isn't. And only USB2 ports (3). An expressport is useful. At least an operating system is installed and some sort of battery life is given, unlike scc trade.

1st gen i5... what a waste of time. It's 2015 people, 6th gen has been released. If you're looking for a used laptop at least get a 2nd gen CPU (big improvements over the 1st gen) and USB 3 ports.

Slightly apples and oranges and it does depend on what you want it for but I paid £95 for an Acer C720 on the Ebay Tesco Outlet last week. For emails, browsing and accessing the wider Google ecosystem online, a good option for a newer machine with a quick boot up time at a slightly lower price point.

Decent deal..about what these are worth now. I remember building these laptops for a customer when they were brand new at around £1200.
Don't think anyone has mentioned it but for those who have bought one....remove the battery and you will find a Sim card slot tucked away in the corner. If your lucky then removing the small cover on the bottom front edge of the laptop you will find both a mini wireless LAN adapter and a mini WWAN adapter for built in 3G :-)

If your unlucky and you just have an empty WWAN slot you can pick one up on eBay for around £5-£10

why would you buy this..?
mugen6 to DeceDeals
12 Sep 15 1 #57
A fool and his money....? All LCD screens start to diminish with time; the brightness will be poor compared to a new laptop. Not to mention this CPU runs hotter than the sun (unlike a cool modern CPU) , 5 year old battery will be useless.

I'm not complaining because I love having plenty of mugs paying over the odds for my old kit when I upgrade just because it cost £1500 when it was new! Oooo big deal. Laptops in the 90's were £3000. Technology is cheaper than it was in 2009.

I bought a Dell 6420 for my father in law from these guys, which has the 2nd gen i5 and a better screen. Cost was £145 and I have to say it is miles better than expected. Not sure if we just got lucky, but it looks barely used and battery is lasting 7 hours with light use. Think they only guarantee an hour though.

I am trying to decide if spending on 2007 core2duo 1.8g 3 ram is worth a ssd upgrade as I need a tech to set it up.
So setup instalation cost is about £75 if the 120 ssd costs £30 .
I like at least 4 sites open at a time but its just too slow at present .
The tech said I could get £75 for it as is... sold on the used market .

The main reason to get this would be for build quality.

I have the same exact configuration as my work machine for the last 3+ years, it's better build than some of the latest Dell Latitude machines that my colleagues use. The keyboard feedback on this is excellent unlike the current trend of avg chicklet keyboard.

Perhaps, I might have been little lucky as my outer case is in mint condition and battery easily lasts 1.5 to 2hrs.

arrived today. Grubby - but mainly fixable with a bit of TLC. The battery has 6-7 hours, so looks good. Sturdy build but not too heavy. My 15 yr old who needs it for school was over the moon, so 8/10 from me. Satisfied, but not ecstatic.

had this E6410 a while now, bought for my nephew for Uni abroad, but unfortunately the keyboard has been playing up - mostly the Enter key, Space key, delete and backspace not registering at all - anybody had any similar issues?

i tried various sticky keys / accessibility options didn't help except once temporarily...so initially thought software...however
Plugged in external keyboard and the keys above work ok...so not sure now...

upgraded to Windows 10 and the same keys still not working ....so updated the bios to the latest A16 and still having issues

thinking it may be a hardware fault apparently dell laptop keyboards not that hard to change?

anyone had similar or have any tips? or worth contacting seller?
