Sandisk discontinued using the chipset, so both the Clip Zip and the Clip usually sell on ebay for more than the new price.

I have 3 of these, the clip, clip + and clip zip. The zip has a bigger colour screen and should be only a few pounds more. One of them went through the wash and still works :). The Rockbox firmware can be flashed to these players which gives them lots more features. Heat added.

Really starting to regret getting this. First I bought the deal on the Sansa Clip Jam, and found that there was no way to sync ratings with my desktop. So then I decided to sell that and buy this which can be flashed with RockBox which apparently has ratings than can be exported, but once enabling Gather Info, you have to do 9-10 clicks for each song you listen to just to rate a song, and there;s no currently maintained software that seems to be able to export them anyway. I feel like mp3 players have only gotten worse since the 3rd gen iPod Nano. If only there was a way to add more than 8GB storage to that.
Gonna have to return this, Sandisk stock and Rockbox are just awful UIs.

Mine arrived today along with a 64gb card. Installed rockbox straight away, spent an hour or so configuring for my ears / headphones. Verdict.... Superb. Easily keeps pace with players that are 10 times the price... Fiio etc. Buy one, rockbox it, spend some time setting it up, use some decent headphones. Sorted!

Love this player had it for about 5 years now, its light, amazing battery life and even if the 8GB isn't big enough you can expand the memory. One thing though my clip broke and found this link on how to repair it using small clothes peg (I put 2 on side by side). I also use an old pair of headphones from my sony mobile that has one long cable and one short so it can go behind my neck and just clipped onto my collar of whatever I'm wearing. I put Rockbox on but don't use it much just hold dowb the left buttom when turning on and the standard software loads up. youtube.com/wat…Egw

Brilliant contribution there. So, it's old tech and.....? Your point being? It's still one of the few portable media players out there with a memory slot, that you can install Rockbox onto and that has exceptional sound quality, especially with FLAC files and decent headphones.
So, as I'm in the market for something to beat this, oh font of all knowledge, can you please provide us with some alternatives?

I got a used one of these to replace the car's ailing inbuilt player - at the time the best I could do was £23 used. The sound quality improvement - naturalness - over the car player is quite marked and I think it beats my iPhone 4 too. People say that Rockbox, while adding all sorts of features, degrades the audio quality.

Some companies charge £25 for a damn t-shirt and here you have a fully working music player with colour display and storage for less than most people pay for a piece of rag that's been around for over 100 years now.

I have had a Clip Zip for years and with Rockbox is the best portable music player I've ever used. The sound quality with FLAC files is amazing and the memory slot is a big selling point. I wish Sansa still made them.
Heat for the description. The price is outrageous, but I guess the quality of the player makes it desirable.

You can get the Sansa Clip+ Jam on a certain auction site for the same price. Well you could a month ago when I bought it.
Saying that, personally I think this is a better model as the power button isn't on the front and just feels better but sadly this doesn't have a micro usb socket.

Heated, tho I dont need another - got 3 of them. Much better than than the later models so I am sticking with the Clip+. Perfectly fine without Rockbox; does everything I need (except Rockbox does remember your sleep setting whereas you have to reset on this one each time).

As I stated on the previous page I use RockBox on mine, though for balance I should say (for anyone contemplating a purchase) that the downside to it is...
It has a terrible UI.
It takes quite a lot of getting used to and can have a bit of a learning curve if you want to do a lot of 'tweaking'. Given the size of the screen, however, it's certainly passable!

I switched from one of these to an Ipod 7 Nano for when I was out running but went back to this as it is lighter and easier to clip onto my shorts. Never bothered with RockBox as it does all I need it do.

Heat added but I much prefer the Sansa Zip layer over these Clips. The larger coloured screen of the Zip makes it easier for me to navigate whilst Rockboxed and being micro USB it means my stack of chargers around the house all fit. Running the Zip with a 64GB card is superb with my music and audiobook collection.
They have been this price for quite a while now at this place. I have bought two Sansa players from them in the past and they have been excellent to deal with.

Still, getting a new one with a 128GB microSD is tempting.

Sandisk still supply 'em I am 100% sure of - another point to note is that while zip and clip have been around for ages Sandisk have periodically updated the version with slight tweaks. A 5 year old zip is not exact;y the same. FLAC + microsd make this a great player!

I've had two of these, first one broke (after loads of use) and second one I have put somewhere safe and can't find :disappointed: They are quite small so losing and mislaying them is a constant problem.
Fantastic product with extremely good sound, better than your phone or whatever. My only criticism is that it's been around for years now and really ought to be less than 24.99 for the 8GB.

So what if it's old? In terms of sound quality and loudness it's the best mp3 player out there. I've owned several over the years and, while reliability isn't brilliant, for sound quality there's nothing come out in recent years that's anywhere near as good for this price point.

Sound surprisingly excellent, headphones not bad at all for price (I use my Senheissers though), battery life not great but not bad either (drinks the juice for FF and Rew though, disproportionatly.) get a 32gb micro - cheap enough and plenty plenty room for what you need
