Line rental saver is non-refundable. I have paid up to October, so in my case they discounted my overall price so that it worked out I would be paying the same as the SSE deal.

Plusnet's uploading max of 1.9mbps on their standard fibre package is pretty well concealed - even BT don't restrict this!
Newbold
31 Jul 15 #2
I see there's a BT deal on at the moment for £10 pm unlimited fibre - plus a £125 Sainsbury Gift Card - plus £157.50 Topcashback! Wonder if Plusnet will match this?
Sogaaddict

Now this is worth investigating.

They wont match with cashback sites I was told.

No, I suppose they won't, but the BT terms are tempting.
ChrisUK
31 Jul 15 #7
Matched with SSE on BB, not the line rental though.

Saves me £7.50 a month though on my current deal & this runs through the duration of the contract, so no "promotional" period as such where you're locked into a contract & paying a higher rate for X amount of months.

Thanks OP - voted hot.
andrewhislop
31 Jul 15 #8
this is right, you might be able to negotiate something regarding the gift card though, basically if its on a competitors main site they will match it, you won't get any quidco or tcb matched, and you will have to push to get anything like a voucher included.
Aeschylus
31 Jul 15 #9
Just phoned, got 76MB unlimited for £10 a month  been with them for 3 years already, service has been flawless...

£10 a month!!!!!!

obviously does not include line rental, but my line rental saver does not run out until June next year anyway
Newbold
31 Jul 15 #10
They didn't. So I've switched to BT. £10pm for fibre (and a decent upload speed, unlike Plusnet's 1.9mbps) and a total of £282.50 back in vouchers and TCB. I'll be switching again in a year's time, though, because the BT charge increases from £10 to £23 pm at that point.
Sogaaddict
31 Jul 15 #11
So what is BT's upload speed on that plan? I have searched high & low to no avail.
Aeschylus
31 Jul 15 #12
You sure that is nothing your end, just did a upload and got 19mb
Newbold
31 Jul 15 #13
• Unlimited BT Infinity 1 with up to 38Mb connection speeds and 9.5Mb upload speeds
Newbold
31 Jul 15 #14
Depends on which fibre package, and when you signed up. New customers to their basic fibre (38mbps) get a 1.9 max upload! Even the CS people aren't aware of that yet - until you get them to check!
Aeschylus
31 Jul 15 #15
ahh, I am on the 76mb unlimited that would be why then, they would match 76mb at £10 for me, might be worth trying again, unless you want to go ofcourse
Sogaaddict
31 Jul 15 #16
With the BT 38MB for £10 a month (12 month contract) then the £282 back in vouchers and TCB (slightly higher phone rental) it is certainly worth moving, for a year.
Aeschylus
31 Jul 15 #17

I tend to agree, obviously though it is not 76mb, but as you say the vouchers are the incentive
barga5n.h4nter
31 Jul 15 #18
I think thats why the virgin price match is the best option for us who have paid our line rental up front already, its just over £9 for the full 76MB
barga5n.h4nter
31 Jul 15 #19
They will price match virgin for £9.16 not £15
Sogaaddict
31 Jul 15 #20
Virgin have messed me around twice before, charging for non existent terms, and then setting the dogs onto me for not paying what I didn't owe, CS are pathetic. Never, ever, again.
MissionaryMan
31 Jul 15 #21
Well, it didn't work for me.

I called them and they offered to match Sky's offer, but for an 18 month contract, not 12 like Sky's. I declined. I then called again the next day and spoke to another rep, who said he couldn't do any better. I asked why I should stay with Plus.net if all they could do is match a competitor's offer, not better it, and he had no response.

So - over to Sky I go. Let's see what Plus.net offer me in 12 month's time.
sleepywhispers
1 Aug 15 #22
You guys are all lucky, I live in a market 1 area I can't even get SSE so no point in asking them to try and match it. I'm currently entering my 3rd year with plusnet and have had no problems with them or their call centres but I got the email and my head has been turned by BT offers my contract is £29.50pm with unlimited broadband (not fibre) and unlimited anytime calls, should I stay or should I go any advice
barga5n.h4nter
1 Aug 15 #23
Ask them to match the sky offer of free broadband for 12 months. You should be able to get free broadband at least. So you should be paying just for line rental+anytime calls. If you can pay your line rental for 1 year in advance you should save about £10 a month on what you are currently paying.

Thar
1 Aug 15 #24
Wouldn't you have been better off taking the 18 month offer from Plusnet?

Anyone with BT? Are their CS hellish?

I never needed to contact them, the service was without fault. But when I asked to leave after the price increase was announced, that's when the problems started.
Newbold
3 Aug 15 #28
Anyone signed up to BT over the weekend and still waiting for the final confirmation email?

The initial email contains the following:

If we don't confirm your order by email or letter within five days, please call us on 0800 731 0286.

but making that call is likely to stop the Quidco/TCB. There should be a second email with full confirmation.
MissionaryMan
5 Aug 15 #29
It's funny you mentioned that - I did think about it. My conclusion was that, after the 12 month discounted deal with Sky, Plus.net would probably have a deal on to tempt me back! I'm gambling that the deal they offer then will be better than what they're offering now.

I appreciate it's a gamble, but I've been with Plus.net for many years and although the service is excellent, they don't seem to value long-term customers and so moving around for better deals is the way to go.

I also didn't like the fact that they'd match a competitor's offer, not better it.

Have any of you guys had problems when switching providers -- I'm thinking of switching from Sky Broadband to Plusnet Fibre (and my landline from BT to Plusnet) but slightly apprehensive that I might lose my existing phone number in the switch. Does this happen much?
cliosport65
9 Aug 15 #31
no providing its all done correctly you will still have the same phone number as its still active, switched over 5 times and so far same number and no problems

BT, for example, and, I think, most other ISPs. It's the 38Mb fibre packages that are restricted to 1.9mbps upload for new customers (including existing switching customers). And that applies even if you can't physically get the 76Mb packages, which is bizarre.

mld81
9 Aug 15 #36
I've just renewed my broadband with them only a couple of days ago to take effect from the 23rd August and then seen this post. Does anybody know if they will review my approaching contract and price match the SSE deal should I put it to them? Worth a shot surely as my new contract with them hasn't started yet?
techno12
9 Aug 15 #37
I think Plusnet are great. Currently paying £10 a month (plus line rental) for 76Meg fibre, and I get the full 76 as the cabinet is close to my flat. I love the fast upload speed (I get 18meg or so real world)

This was a retentions deal to extend contract for 2 years,

Their support is great and they reply to all queries on their forums.
Newbold
9 Aug 15 #38
Absolutely! Put it to them that you'll leave otherwise. They should offer you an attractive retention deal.
Thar
9 Aug 15 #39
I've been with Plusnet just short of two years. Never had a problem with the connection, so never had to call them. I'm currently syncing at 75 Meg. No evidence of throttling and no limits on downloads. I'm very happy to stay with them for another 2 years. I've made a £8.50 per month saving thanks to the OP.
mld81
9 Aug 15 #40
That is my retention deal but my arguement will be that the new contract isn't in force yet and that I still have time to get out of it unless they can match it

£30 is the cease fee, this is pretty much standard. Migration to another provider is free.
cliosport65
9 Aug 15 #42
you will still have to pay the £30 fee no matter who you go with next. :disappointed:
Newbold
9 Aug 15 #43
Very happy to be leaving them. The speed's been considerably lower than with TalkTalk (different equipment at the exchange) and the customer service considerably worse. Support has been poor, and I did not expect 30 minute waits on the phone to be the norm.

BT have left their imprint on Plusnet, sadly - and I gather it's BT who have insisted that they reduce the upload speed to 1.9mbps on the standard fibre packages for anyone now signing up to them.

I suspect that their previously excellent reputation will soon disappear now that the BT accountants have intervened to try to make it as cr#p as BT is.
MSK.
9 Aug 15 #44
Oh right. I was a bit confused because I can't find a company offering better than 1.9mb upload on 38mb at the moment. I can't find the upload speed you will get at all on the BT website.

So it was just better from customers that signed up earlier? I can't see a current package that is better.
jaynino
9 Aug 15 #45
Something makes me wonder if plusnet's deep packet inspection/advanced traffic management system affects performance slightly, not on high throughput items, just slower response on websites etc.
MSK.
9 Aug 15 #46
I find this too. Most things are okay, but webpages load very slowly considering my connection speed.

Signed my dad up last month for fibre. First they completely lost his order and he had to order again. Now they have pushed his install date back a fortnight. It's a real mess.

My connection is dropping out every night, the same time of day but exactly ten minutes later each night and they refuse to do any tests.

Got this today, they matched the SSE deal for 2 years as soon as I mentioned it. The customer representative didn't want to say anything unless I said it first.

Then I asked the guy to beat it but he said they couldn't, just match it. Finally I mentioned free caller id and he said that was possible! So 24 months, unlimited 76mbps fibre optic, free evening and weekend calls, and caller id for £24.50 a month, not bad!

Massive thanks to the OP, just got a cracking deal from Plusnet.

I joined a 4 months ago and was paying £2.50 per month for standard broadband, free weekend calls and £15.95 line rental.

I asked them to match the current Sky Fibre deal of £16.40 line rental and free fibre for 12 months (limited to 25GB). The advisor offered me free unlimited 40mps Fibre for 18 months, free weekend and evening calls for standard line rental of £16.99. Nearly bit his bloody hand off!

So for £1.46 less per month I'm getting massively increased speeds and free evening calls! Dead chuffed. Oh and free installation and free router!
Saban
13 Aug 15 #52
A couple of other notes-

-The advisor was really helpful and open about what they could offer, I didn't have to persuade him or threaten to cancel.

-As other posters found he said that they could not match SSE's £12 line rental, Plusnets line rental is fixed at £16.99.

-He said that any 'free' offers could be matched. I have had my confirmation email with the reference 'SKY Deal match'

Hope this helps someone!

My line rental is paid up to October. I asked if they could do anything to match SSE's and they reduced my monthly broadband charge so it matched SSE's. I just have to pay for my next line rental saver before 1 September to get that at the lower price.
