HUKD's member Henlans (real name Shang Tsung) seen here being deported back to his homeland of Cambodia for his part in the 2015 NUS card scandal. The scam rocked the foundations of the UK commerce market, costing retailers- such as The Co Operative society -upwards of £12 per store.

NUS extra Discount Redemption Instructions

In order to take advantage of the NUS Extra Student Discount, you must collect your own personal 5% discount code right here on our NUS extra Amazon page. This code will entitle you to 5% off Books (excluding Kindle books), CDs, DVDs, Office Products, Jewellery & Watches, Grocery, Personal Care Appliances, Health & Beauty, Shoes, Sports, Tools, Lawn & Garden, Automotive, Kitchen & Home and Pet Supplies items.

To make a purchase on Amazon.co.uk using the discount codes, simply follow the steps below:
1.Select the items sold by Amazon you wish to order using your shopping basket, then proceed to checkout. (Please note, you cannot use the 1-Click shopping method.)
2.On the “Review your order” page you'll see a box headed “Gift cards & promotional codes”.
3.Enter your discount code into the box and click the “Apply” button. You’ll be able to see your discount deducted from the total cost in the order summary.

When you have successfully placed your order, the following message will be displayed: “Thank you--we have received your order”.

Please note: To take full advantage of your NUS Extra Student Discount you must purchase items eligible for the 10% discount and items eligible for the 5% discount in separate orders. If you combine items eligible for different discounts in the same order, only one discount will apply, and will apply only to the items to which it relates.

Once you have made a purchase on Amazon.co.uk using a discount code, that discount will apply to all eligible purchases. You will not need to add it again. Discount codes expire on 31 August 2015.

Please note: When using the discount for the first time, all items in the basket must be eligible to receive the discount. Once this first transaction has been completed, all further transactions can also include non-eligible items and the discount will be applied accordingly, but only one code can be applied per transaction – please keep clothing purchases separate to benefit fully from both discount codes.

* Amazon Student is only valid for students aged 18 or over, studying at university or further education institutions in the UK. Terms & Conditions apply.

Thats so 90's modern students now eat Domino's pizza multiple times a day, wear jeans from brands like Zara, get a taxi the 5 minute walk to student bar if its spitting with rain as they dont want to get their hair wet.

Oh the stories I can tell you about the recent years I spent in education, common one was students moaning they only had £100 for a nights beer money as they needed taxi money both ways(for a max 10-15 minute walk) takeaway on way home etc.

NUS and the NUS card are dead dead dead.

They (NUS) lean to the left, yet supported the government that introduced tuition fees. They continue to do so. It's simply a leg up for people who want to get on in the Labour Party and it no longer represents 'students' even if it ever did. How can a party that believes in equality of outcome ever support someone who is studying to make their life better, when they believe that the outcome of that study - increased life opportunities - should be a right gifted to all.

Rant over.

I'm in the same position. To be honest the only reason I see buying this deal is as a backup in case Endsleigh gets pulled from NUS. But there is no reason why this couldn't be removed from NUS as well so I don't really see how its guaranteed for life.

The NUS card is £12 because we are more than half way through an academic year, the card will only be valid until August.
To get a NUS card that will be valid for the whole year you will have to wait till August and the start of the new academic year, by which time the NUS card will be back up to full price £25.

cmr28 is correct. It is fraud. It's unlikely you'll be taken to court over the matter but a judge would rule that you are not a student. Is it worth the risk for a possible conviction?
mikeyrobbo
10 Apr 15 #247
No it's not. You have enrolled in a course, ergo you are a student. Even if you don't take the course it doesn't mean it is fraud. I could start a university course then never turn up to lectures but benefit from having a student ID...is that also fraud?
No

10 Apr 15 3 #248
Funny how people are quick to dig at students not deserving discounts, then as soon as they can cheat the system to get the discount card, it's fine. I'm a student and have had this card a while, and I cannot see why non students are desperate to buy it? Yes you can get a free cheeseburger if you buy a meal at mcdonalds, or 5% off books and dvds at amazon, but with flubit you already get a better discount on amazon, and other offers there is usually a code floating around to beat the price already. If you are shopping at co-op then moneysaving isn't your priority.

When I got free Spotify through my mobile contract, I had a similar experience - I seem to remember I had to contact Spotify support directly for them to cancel my previous arrangement on their systems, otherwise the system thinks you have just had a change of heart and want to reactivate your account! I would contact them and explain that you have just become a student so that they can do the necessary on their systems...

10 Apr 15 1 #279
Wouldn't be fraud anyway.
The NUS xtra card is a civil offering and has no physical monetry value.
The only legal recourse against you would be to sue in civil court privately.
Considering it would be quite easy for someone to sign up to this in good faith that would be impossible to win for any company.
Companies would voluteer to sign up to this based on terms that would certainly disallow them form following this (impossible to win) line, would be a PR nightmare "Superdrug sues potential student and loses"

NUS Xtra, likewise do they really have the resources to follow a line of principle?
They don't even have telephone support.

Cretin.

If you are a uni grad (for real,) you can get an nus card for a year using this link: https://cards.nusextra.co.uk/affiliate/alumni

Yes you can't benefit from Amazon, and the railcard, but it easily pays for itself within the few months of using it.

I got mine in Jan (i think) and have used it when eating out, cinema, online shopping e.t.c.

That's the problem, people aren't getting an education. These loopholes are wonderful arent they? Governments use loopholes to redirect tax payers money into private pockets, some overseas students enter the country on student visas without intention to study but to take advantage of the benefits the country offers, large companies and the wealthy use loopholes to pay as little back into the system. What a wonderful mindset to have.

I've had mine for just under a year and I've definitely made the money back. All the co ops I've tried take it, even when just buying a magazine. I just flash it anywhere that offers student discounts. All the pennies saved add up.
The big things like rail cards, amazon prime, apple discounts, etc require a signed declaration from your uni. I can't get a student bus pass but I have had student dayrider tickets with a big discount (stagecoach in Fife).

NUS extra gets you an extra 25% off student prices at odeon, you have to make sure they scan the barcode for the offer for the 25% as many places fob you off and say yes it's applied when you've just been given the standard student price.

As long as you are legitimately enrolled on a qualifying course I don't see how it can be fraud..... There's no lie/deception involved (or false representation as the fraud act States). It might help your conscience to start the course online to show you're actively doing it but there's no need. There's people go to Uni with the sole intention of enjoying themselves and the degree/qualification comes second. Don't see how this is different.

I've just had a knock on the door from the bobbies.

Apparently they were passed my details from an unknown source. They'd been tipped off that I had partaken in a fraudulent transaction. They informed me that to pay for a service (NUS), where no one actually loses out on anything, by deception is a crime.

After speaking to me for 5 minutes and after my initial shock had dissipated. I succumbed to my inner feelings. So I released my bladder all over the insides of my clothes, injured my side, that will probably need stitches as I fell to the floor in my emotional outburst. This was manifesting itself in the form of uncontrollable laughter and comments of your having a fecking laugh, now sod off and go send the flying squad out to catch benefit scroungers too.

All those jumping on this deal have you thought for a moment about the ethics of your actions, you are basically committing fraud, but as long as you get 5% off at Amazon everything is rosy…

NUS cards are meant for full-time students to help a low-income group of individuals gain qualifications, not a perk for a bunch of freeloaders on a money saving forum.

I've not yet applied for a card but I'm pretty sure that no students were harmed in the exploitation of this deal. It's a pretty safe bet that those retailers and restaurants who sign up with the NUS don't do it out of altruistic reasons to help anyone but themselves - they do it because it leads to greater sales and 95% is better than 0%. If everyone started ordering from Apple with 15% discount or shopping at the Co-op with 10% discount then they would withdraw the offer.

You're right in that it's not an altruistic offer, but it's not as simple as "get more sales". The idea is to build up some brand loyalty with young people who will likely go on to earn good money. Giving them a small saving now could lead to a lot of potential sales in the future.

What they don't want is to just give discounts to any old person who doesn't want to pay full price.

Spotify student discount update; this is a reply from Spotify:

Hello drummerdickens,

Thanks for getting in touch. Don't worry, we'll work this out together to make it happen! ☺

We have two options for you as we work on a fix to the Student Discount issue:

We can add one free month to your account. After that, you can try again to subscribe to the Student Discount. We should have the issue resolved by then.

To do this option, please provide the following:

Your date of birth (example: March 8, 1995).
Your zip/postal code.
Last 4 digits of your payment card.
Or you can create a new account with the Student Discount. Reply to this email with your new username and we'll move the playlists, starred tracks, followers, and Your Music from the old account to the new one.

Note: If you're offered a trial during sign up, don't take it. You won't be able to apply Student Discount if you do.

Look forward to hearing back from you soon, we thank you for understanding and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I went with the free month and I'll set a reminder for next month to set it up again. Sweet!

unidays will not work for non-students as when you register it does a check with your institutions system - which you wont be on, unless you are an actual registered student. As another poster pointed out, many of the best discounts are now unidays specific, meaning I can see the NUS card being phased out eventually. how do I know all this? I work at a university so I know all the tricks, and as a university member of staff we've always been able to get an NUS whenever we want, I have a three year one currently.

21 Apr 15 #494
Hello.

Here's my experience today, after buying & redeeming the Groupon voucher with WriteStoryBooksForChildren (WSBfC):

NUS Extra website will NOT accept the Place of Study given to me to register with NUS for the Extra card (from WSBfC on their website 'http://www.writestorybooksforchildren.com').

This refusal to accept the institution by NUS Extra is of course after paying WSBfC using my Groupon voucher, then logging in as a paid-up WSBfC student + cutting and pasting the address name WSFC gave me (to prevent any spelling errors) to use on the NUS Extra card site. It didin't work going directly to the NUS site, nor via the link to it supplied by WSBfC.

Have emailed WSBfC asking them to explain what's wrong & asking them to send me an address which will work with the NUS Extra card application site.

The WSBfC site is clearly advertising their affiliation to NUS & paying students' eligibility for the NUS Exxtra card, on their own NUS page - opening paragraph - as follows:
"As a result of our affiliation with the National Union of Students (NUS) we’re delighted to announce that ALL students of http://www.WriteStoryBooksForChildren.com are eligible to apply for a valuable, money-saving NUS extra and International Student Identity Card (ISIC)!"

Will post more when I hear back from WSBfC.

In the meantime: buyer beware...

I'm struggling to remember my student days but i think back then we had a uni card and nus card separate? Nothing called 'nus extra'.

I see it's quite normal for a university card to also be an NUS card (nus logo on it)

My question essentially is whether this really is an NUS card? If say, a cinema asks for an 'NUS card' or 'student id' will this 'extra' card be sufficient or are they likely asking for a university/nus card?

What are people finding the NUS card good for ?
Silhouette to Cyrus
30 Apr 15 1 #536
The big one for people was Spotify (instant £60 saving).

I personally dont use Spotify, but used at McDonalds (free cheese/burger/flurry with EVM) whenever I go there, but my 'biggies' have been Vision Express (for £60 off my glasses) and food bills at most local restaurants.
nige182 to Cyrus
30 Apr 15 1 #537
In addition to what Silhouette said, Amazon next day delivery is another. A lot of gyms do student discounts, my local (if I ever start going again) does good student prices.

Personally I would say the free Microsoft software through Dreamspark and Spotify offer the best value, each worth well above the investment. And Vision Express if you get the saving Silhouette mentioned and actually use them, I personally buy my frames online and have for years.

It does not give you an .ac.uk email address , you cannot get the Amazon 50% student discount with this. But you do get 50% off spotify and 10% off at Co-Op , 10% Superdrug and others (once you have your NUS card).

Buy the course from the U.S. Groupon site then follow below...

Buy it, register on the site http://www.writestorybooksforchildren.com then visit

http://www.writestorybooksforchildren.com/nus/ for the info that you will need on the NUS extra site

Then visit http://www.nus.org.uk/nusextra?utm_source=NUSExtra&utm_medium=Redirect&utm_campaign=NUSExtra to get your card, you need a picture to upload.

You will save £27 easy on the first year and then £13 a year after. Spotify, Coop (10%) etc etc.

Email from writestorybooksforchildren.com

Thanks for getting in touch.
You are eligible for an NUS extra card once you have registered for the course. I have included a link where you will find all the information on how to obtain an NUS extra card below, but please make sure you are logged into the course before clicking on the link otherwise you will not see the correct information:
http://www.writestorybooksforchildren.com/nus/
When you have registered for the course you have a lifetime access to the course content however the NUS extra card works annually so you will be required to reapply every year.
I hope this helps and if you have any further issues please just get in touch.
Kind regards,
amour3k

Via Livingsocial's Web Site? .. which literally has sod all to do with either a Children's Book Writing Course?, &/or Groupon itself for that matter?, or .....
(I'm just a wee bit confused here ..... )

Its 3 Months from purchase of your Course to THEN Log-In to the Course via Groupon's 'Link' to u, etc to then Register your Course with the Site/people who'll now administer the Course to u .....

Beyond those preliminaries, the rest is solely up to u.

Werent people having some problems with the kids one?. I seem to recall people trying to get their NUS cards, and NUS site saying this course was not supported even though it was at the time.

Worth checking the T&C's as they may have removed it, if there were issues.

I don't think so as u need an academic email address. But u can get some sort of 5% and 10% discount at Amazon.

Don't forget 10% at the Coop.

There's Super drug ans ASos as well.

Not strickly true? .. via another/earlier hukd comment via a 'similar' thread, someone did actually comment that IF you input your NUS Card Number via Amazon's Student Sign-Up Page then that/this would be just as acceptable as that of via the ac.uk Student EMail Address alone, so ..... lol. :-)

And via NUS Website if i'm not mistaken, they list at least 190+ online and offline 'Merchants' that are signed-up to the NUS Scheme, and in so doing your discount/s are then iminent lol.

The Amazon 5% discount ends on 31st August! :disappointed:

So only got just over a weeks worth of discounts ( saving £4 ) with mine which is the main thing I bought the NUS card and course for!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201513510

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200217300

I better get myself down the Co op!! ... I only signed up for the course for one year ( silly me ) does this mean I can't get an NUS card next year without signing up for another course?

This isn't proving to be the money saver I thought it would though as the Amazon discount would have been good if it continued after next week

Just tried to do this but it is not possible.
Groupon.com do not accept purchasers from outside USA and Canada...Your card can not be input as you can not select a relevant Province / State.
Paypal is not accepted and neither are gift cards .......

Not sure if this has been mentioned already by someone else as the thread is obviously really old and can't be bothered to read through it all, but I managed to get Amazon Student with this card.

I just scanned my NUS Extra/ISIC card and sent it to their email address (can't remember which one but could dig it out if someone actually reads this lol) pleading ignorance and saying "my friend said if I send you this I can get Amazon Student" and a few days later I got a reply apologising for the slow reply, and stating they had activated student on my existing account. Then I paid £40 to upgrade to full Prime services (it didn't included Video, Music etc - just the deliveries) for the year.

Best thing is about a week or so ago I got an email from Amazon saying that since they were now upgrading the Student incentives to the complete range of services and I missed out, they were giving me a £19.50 credit on my account!

I'm pretty sure I was lucky with this and it's not standard practice to activate Student using just the NUS Extra card, but doesn't hurt to try. I don't think I'll try it again next year as I do feel a little guilty and thing that even at £80 for the year, Prime is an excellent deal.

Ur 2nd link says "Once you've made one purchase on Amazon.co.uk using a discount code, the discount will apply to all eligible purchases until the end date of 31 August 2016, or until the cap of £1,500 is reached, whichever occurs first. You won't need to add it again. Discount codes expire on 31 August 2016."

So good till Aug 2016
shoobirdy
7 Oct 15 #634

Yup, that's the one - I literally said;

"Hi

One of my friends told me that I might be able to get Amazon Student membership if I send a scan of my NUS card to this email address - is this correct?

Thanks"

Good luck!
