HP 8610 Printer £109.00 at John Lewis - net cost £29 after £30 cashback and £50 JLP vouchers

HP 8610 printer at John Lewis. The purchase price is £109 however you get £30 cash back from HP and £50 JLP vouchers so the net cost is £29 (this obviously assumes you have a use for the £50 JLP voucher). Also get an extended three year warranty from HP. The link to the details on how to redeem the £50 JLP vouchers isn't working, I've advised JLP customer services as have just ordered. Excellent printer, I already have one but bought this as a spare as at that price this is an absolute bargain.

Big yes, but large 500 sheet capacity tray. Ethernet and wireless and also fax so must have a phone line connection?
Supports airprint and (presumably) tablets? Supports double sided printing. The only question to me is are there cheap compatible ink cartridges available
And the JL vouchers are ok if there is something else you really need to buy there.

7 May 15 1 #67
Agree with the comment on compatible aftermarket cartridges. After some research, I picked up the Epson Workforce WF-3520 (colour inkjet with duplex printing, scanning, wireless etc) which seems to accept almost any type of aftermarket cartridge - seriously I've bought sets of 4 cartridges (black + 3 colours) from multiple ebay and Amazon sellers and they all work. A set of 4 sets me back about 4 quid delivered, seriously how cheap is that!! A set of 12 or 24 is even cheaper per cartridge. There are even continuous fill ink systems for this printer that cost £40 for the system including 400ml of ink, an option I haven't had to explore yet as cartridges are so cheap.

Fantastic deal and also compatible with HP instant ink.
I have an Envy 5532 printer on the £7.99 a month deal and can print 300 A4 colour photographs a month. I've been using instant ink for nearly 1 year and have no complaints and saved over £300 in ink. More details below.
Also on the HP site it shows an included voucher for 2 months instant ink (600 pages) free. Worth £15.98

I have given up on inkjets, they are just built like turd for the most part and especially if you don't use them pretty much every week they dry up and block and have fits when you do come to use them. Highly annoying.

I recommend a small (size is relative) colour laser if you don't print photos and you probably shouldn't anyway, it's cheaper and better quality to upload and order online from a print service if you can spare the couple of days turnaround.

Something like this perhaps: http://www.ebuyer.com/542404-dell-c1765nf-colour-multifunction-laser-printer-with-fax-210-4119

But there's plenty of options

Very subjective as to what constitutes a page of print also how many times printer turned off/on (they use ink every time you do so). But don't take my word for it as I have only had experience of around 20 different HP inkjets both at home and at work. Buy your printer and enjoy.......Until you need to buy ink.

Awesome deal, and heat added. Word of warning, this range of HP printers, and its predecessors, have a long history of issues with Wireless printing. It doesn't work reliably and never has. There are heaps of pages of people complaining out on the 'net, and HP deny its an issue. There have been a couple of class action cases in the states about the fact that HP continue to sell a printer that has a known (although not yet admitted to) issue. Just something to bear in mind.

Works perfectly with a wired connection though.

wow good deal - printer is about 2 years old. Mine last 18months but as I bought it at Costco (it was also under warranty anyway) for £60 ish I got a refund and bought a hp 8615 instead for £49 after cashback

ink isn't cheap but lasts ages and is cheap to run despite the cartridge cost outlay. Main issues are HP bloatware and for no reason whatsoever just drops off the network - seems to be a known issue as others have reported this too and the same problem occurs with the hp8610 and hp8615

Standard cash back (mal)practices so you forget to apply between 30 and 60 days! ( I once forgot for a similar one from Samsung).

The whole idea of cash back offers relies on majority of users not able to claim one way or other.

topss
7 May 15 #118
It can be used in the context of printing too. Half duplex meaning you have to manually turn the paper over and the other side gets printed. So press print - page prints - message on screen asking you to put paper back in for other side - prints other side.

Kinda crappy, but that's what it means.
scooby555
7 May 15 1 #119
Great deal, however a word of warning. INK COSTS

Before you buy any printer weigh up the cost of replacement ink and go for one with separate ink tanks for each colour. Sometimes they will sell printers at below cost because they know you will have to buy cartridges from them.

I would go for Canon (for less freq use and less chance of nozzles clogging) or Epson, or older HP models without the tricolor cartridges are ok but do have a tendency to jam.

My last Canon lasted 10yrs and £2.50 for a full set of cartridges, but things are a lot more flimsy now days judging by my new Canon, still very cheap ink.
Uridium
7 May 15 1 #120
In my 20+ years working in IT (I actually work for HP as well) I've never heard Half Duplex referred to as a printing term. Duplex printing is duplex printing whether you turn the pages manually or not.

Half duplex is as Perpatratur says a Networking term.

Flipd to argosextra
7 May 15 #128
Not immediately clear, but the general t&c for a JL "Gift Card" (where a JL Gift Card is the formal identification of the voucher being discussed) state:
"The gift card will expire 24 months after the last transaction on the card. Any remaining balance will not be refunded."
but doesn't appear to specifically say when the first transaction must be.

The voucher for the JL gift card cannot be claimed prior to the 30th day after purchase, and the processing time after having claimed is up to 28 days. People are buying this device to use as a printer? I thought they were buying it to access the cutting edge in communication: think it's called facsimile or similar. I'd buy one but it would make it too easy for the boss to fire me, or the other half to divorce me :disappointed:

30 years here and I've only ever heard half duplex used in network terms. Either a printer prints both sides, in which case it is duplex, or it doesn't! So the term half duplex doesn't make sense to me.

Even the term manual duplex is a con made up by marketing departments as far as I'm concerned. You can get any printer to print both sides if you turn the paper yourself and organise the pages in the correct order. It's about time printer companies stopped the sharp practice of claiming that is duplex printing.

To replace all four carts with a set of genuine HP XL carts rated at 2300 sheets works out at under 2.5p / sheet at total £56 direct from HP. Smaller-capacity HP carts are available for less. If you can locate any compatible carts that will not be rejected by this printer, those compatible carts will likely be total £12+ per set (4 x XL equivalent). Specs state the printer is supplied with circa 1000 sheet "starter" cartridges. Or as the printer qualifies for the HP "instant ink" subscription programme, the user can choose to pay HP a set monthly fee to cover the cost of printing a pre-arranged number of sheets per month, where HP sends the user replacement carts at the appropriate time no additional cost.

According to the HP Data sheet link below it does (Automatic) duplexing printing.
If on top of that you want automatic duplex scanning, you need the 8620 or 8630 for that.

Thank you for your reply.

I contacted their Customer Services and they were very helpful. Soon after speaking with them, I noticed that the price link went live again and I was able to order one, which I collected the next day from my local Waitrose.

The John Lewis Gift Card has to be claimed via a postal application form which also requires the original receipt. However, the £30 Cashback from HP is all done online.

When claiming form them, make sure you have the serial number of the printer and a copy of the receipt, as proof of purchase, in electronic form that can be uploaded to the HP Cashback site.
kebamo
10 May 15 #164
I assume the original receipt is the one you print from your account or do they ship one with the printer?
Spotlight61
10 May 15 1 #165
The one you print from your computer. As when the item is delivered, all you get is a delivery note, and HP state this is not a recognised receipt in their terms.

Well that's what I have submitted to both John Lewis and HP. HP also say that if the paperwork you submit isn't correct they will email you and give you 7 days to resubmit.

Hope this helps?

Just used links on JL site to register for HP 3 year warranty and £30 HP cashback, initially I had thought the HP cashback was like JL where you have to wait 30 days but it doesn't appear so. Note I used the 2 HP links and went through the registration process twice however I suspect you can do both together, someone may have already done this and could confirm for others? Looked like if you go through HP cashback link and register that after selecting cashback it give an option to add another product and I think you can pick 3 year warranty at that stage.

I'm really impressed, nothing flimsy that I've found so far. Touch screen is very responsive, very good quality. When you change cartridges it even has a light inside the unit to help see what you're doing.

I did have an issue (its been heavily reported) with the printer going to sleep and Windows machines on the network seeing it as offline. Could print from ios and android and the printer is wired (no wifi) and has a static IP....but still saw the issue.
The fix for me was to install the printer driver on a PC thats always switched on. That seems to stop the problem happening but not ideal for everyone

Regarding the instant ink and the possible 2 free months. I looked at the linked .pdf and it seems you need the enrollment key that came with the printer, which should give you 2 months free regarldess of plan chosen. This offer didn't include one if I'm correct. If I purchase an enrollment key from say argos and enter that number when registering with instant ink, will it still be eligible for 2 months free?

Oh, just a side note, HP are selling the same printer 8615*? for £109, £40 cashback and includes 2 months free enrollment key. Noticed it when I was exploring instant ink. Not sure what difference between 8610 and 15 is, perhaps colour? but £40 cashback instead of £30 and definately 2 free months instant ink. No john lewis voucher but then you're not commited to spending it either (:

Post as another deal but it may be there already and meh

Starter carts supplied with printer are rated "1000 sheets" by HP.
A £17 standard-size black HP950 cart is rated at 1000 sheets.
Each of the three £15 standard-size colour HP951 carts is rated at 700 sheets.
The suffix XL versions are £23 black @ 2300; and each of the three £18 colours @ 1500.
Clearly the pricing is heavily incentivised towards a significant benefit to buy the £56 XL four-cart pack, and at equivalent of under 2.5p per sheet seems very reasonable.

Totally forgot to register within 31 days to claim the £30 cashback from HP. I know I can still claim my £50 from John Lewis as that has to be claimed between 30 and 60 days, and I can also do my 3 years guarantee as that has to be done within 60 days...
Is there still any way to claim the £30 from HP? Missed it by a few days. The online form doesn't let me choose the purchase date as it has lapsed the 31 day period.

£149 now with no cashback from HP and no John Lewis Voucher

waiting for our John Lewis Voucher to arrive! shame they don't sell the complete pack of cartridges as would be ideal use of the voucher, I did email JL and said it would not be until next year before they stocked them - weird!

They will be holding onto the voucher for the full 28 days. Let's hope that there are some things left in the sale, probably a load of old tat!

Has anyone had their £50 voucher from John Lewis yet? It will be 28 days this Saturday since I posted my claim form off and I know that there were quite a few people before me so just wondered if anyone had received theirs.

Nothing yet. They are not vouchers by the way. It's a partnership gift card loaded with £50 of credit to spend in store or online at JL or Waitrose with certain exceptions.

No I have checked and there is £50 credit linked to my account now so may go and spend it. My daughter rang after me as they would not give me any information about anyone else's account. They told her that they had logged her call and that she will receive them by Friday.

Called in and apparently due to the high volume of claims there is a delay of 12 weeks but we should all have it by this week, gift card team are calling back to confirm my claim was received and if it's already been posted out or if they will send one out if not. Whenever it arrives either way am super happy with my printer bargain! Love John Lewis I have to say...

Called John Lewis just now in regards to the £50 John Lewis Gift Card. They said most people are in the same situation. They said they are waiting for HP to release the funds to them, as it is a HP promotion but via John Lewis. They advised to wait until the 31st of July, and if nothing has come through then to call them back and they will issue the £50 via bank transfer.

Received my £50 paper voucher today too along with the receipt I had sent them. Date on letter says 10th July. Happy days!

FYI these gift vouchers have no expiry date. I have a John Lewis Partnership card and they send me the same vouchers time to time. I have had some for years and years on end and they work fine. Once you use it if there is remaining balance they move that onto a plastic gift card which does have an expiry.

Heads up for anyone who bought this.

I bought this at the time, 15 months ago. Got the £30 cashback and the & £50 voucher. I didn't go for the 3 year HP warranty. Last week it developed a slight fault (tiny lines when printing) John Lewis said that because it was outside the HP one year warranty they wouldn't fix it but either replace it or give me a £109 gift card. I opted for the card and bought a great (non HP) printer from JL. Can't beat John Lewis for customer service.
