Yes, there is a Plex App available on the LG Store (I'm assuming this TV has access to said store). However, you currently need a Plex Pass for access to it. This will likely change down the line.

I doubt the Sony has better image quality, and definitely not "light years ahead"... Maybe you didn't set it up correctly.

Surely if you can afford to spend £600+ on a TV you can afford £10 for a nowtv box (not paying the subscription and just using the catchup) or getting a £40 Roku? Or is it better if it's integrated?

Panasonic, Samsung and Sharp in no order in terms of panel tech and in house production.

And no before anyone mentions Panasonic do not outsource any parts.

It was very hard to read, but I think you are wrong:
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1363168964
"In the fourth quarter of 2012, LG controlled 28 % of the LCD panel market and Samsung controlled 25.1 %. LG has managed to take the lead after signing contracts with Sony and Panasonic that have begun using LG’s LCD panels in new TVs. Sony was previously a partner of Samsung. LG has also supplied the largest share of LCD panels for Apple’s iPad that has seen explosive growth."

http://www.digitalversus.com/tv-television/ces-2013-panasonic-s-new-lcd-tvs-get-passive-3d-n27771.html
"Using passive 3D in 2012's ET5 LCD TV must have proved a positive experience for Panasonic, as the firm has decided to switch all of its LCD TVs over to passive 3D for 2013 (with four pairs of glasses supplied with each model). This no doubt means that the Japanese tech manufacturer is now sourcing its panels entirely from LG, and that Panasonic's own version of IPS technology—Alpha-IPS—could be on its way out."

Ok just found the difference between this and the previous model lb730v.

Translated from german:

Of the equipment features identical to the LB731V is the model LB870V. Only the name "LED Plus" and the thickness of only 34mm indicate that this model is an edge-lit LED TV's. The "Plus" stands for "local dimming". The display has a much higher frame rate of 1000 Hz MCI as well as a built-in 8-megapixel camera , such as video calls via Skype.

One may wonder about the chunky design of the stand, the one at the flagship of the LB series LB870V Soundbar is. Here 2 x 15 watt speakers and 2 x 10 watts woofer are installed. As a small accent that can LG logo on front lights are displayed.

We went in for the Samsung UE48H5000 @ £399, the blacks on a 5500 looked terrible, really washed out, grey, and major light bleed from just about source of light on the screen. Maybe deliberately set up badly? This TV however looked fantastic, sounded great, and had an amazing picture. If you factor in the cost of a soundbar and warranty from elsewhere it really is a bargain.

The stand-integrated soundbar is a pure genius idea, not even sure if LG themselves do one like that?

I could have coped without smart features but they were an added bonus. Ditto the 3D

Both SD and HD from a skybox are incredible...no motion blur light bleed or grey blacks to be seen. PS4 also fantastic

Would definately recommend any in the market for a TV of this size have a look at this. We had the last 49 from Tamworth unless they get more stock in today

Not seen it on this set and the bigger 65, dirty screen is normally something that happens with plasma, if you do get it on any LED set you can try:

Turning the brightness down or getting a calibration app on android to sort the right picture quality settings for your enviroment.
Turn the led backlighting down on the TV
Try a mild, low light source either side of the TV, eg: do not watch it in a completely dark room

Also if you have not already done so, check the firmware you have installed on your LG, there have been 3 updates that had recompiled code for some reported errors, that were fixed with the latest [700mb] official firmware, try and do the update direct from a USB stick in the tv, which it will allow you to do, instead of updating it over the air or on wifi ;-)

28 Mar 15 #132
That's interesting; I did an awful lot of research before buying mine, and you're the first person I've come across to have had this problem with it. The picture in store and at home is excellent, as far as I can tell. This John Lewis TV, however, like all LGs I've seen over the last year, simply can't cope with fast-moving images. Even their own in-store demo shows up the aberrations when they show a skydiver - there are dodgy pixels all over the place, even on their £8,000 tellies. Seriously awful when you're paying that kind of cash. As for this deal, and I know it's down to the individual, so I'm not having a go at the OP, I'd much rather save the money and go for a Sony; it's a no-brainer!

There is a lot more than there was 6 months ago, but if you buy this one, it will last until there is more!

Yes it is a good purchase, if the 55" is too big, if you do have the 49 as a bedroom set, suggest some gentle low lighting either side, as no doubt when you watch it, it will be pitch black and the screen will be way to bright on normal settings, thus turn the backlight dimming|brightness down, put some 10-15w love lights on and save your eyes! Have a measure up prior to buying, as you will be suprised how much better the 55" is and what spaces it can fit into|onto!

No

Cool, make sure you get the whole firmware in one download on your laptop|server|desktop and test the zip extraction first, then copy it over onto USB, also advise that you do not use a crappy slow USB stick, as sometimes this will make the update hang and you will think that it going slow, but it is not, it has crashed due to the transfer rate of the stick, also ensure that your network|wifi is off|unplugged prior to doing it, if it states you have the latest and|or the same # firmware, just simply do it again to overwrite all the crap factory ones on the TV ;-)

If you are getting that sort of effect on a particular stream/sky channel, might also be worth hard resetting your sky box and getting the latest [dec2014 or feb2015] firmwares, which do not and have not hit all the 2015 boxes yet.

Once you have the newest official LG firmware and have followed the LG guide to the letter, reset the TV to the un calibrated settings under picture, then re-calibrate with an android app or manually turn off the dimming|edge|back lighting on a simple 1080p HD stream from a usb stick, then try the same from your football source, it could also be the hdmi cable, so again swap it out for another to try it.

If all else fails, send the 49" back and get this one! Agree about the sound bar, nothing wrong with the sound and afawk, a lot more middle|bass than the on the Sony's..

'Targeted for those on benefits' - what a ridiculous comment. To get a decent TV at this size you'd be paying this price at an absolute minimum. Admittedly, I think the picture quality on this model is appalling when there are fast-moving images on-screen, but that just makes your comment all the more strange. Personally, I do work for a living, as does my wife. We are looking to buy a TV that is vastly more expensive than this, so what does it make us - homeless?

Besides, everyone knows the stereotypical folks on benefits (not the decent people who have hit hard times) just go for the biggest screen at the cheapest price. JVC and Technika all the way ... ;-)

we went to buy one of these today. The whole Web Os is great, the magic remote is quirky in a good way, the tv physically lools great. The picture is not so great. had the guy run tech demo on various sets throughout the store and this was the worst by far. There was one scene where a peraon blew a hand full of dust which lost sharpness and another with a face on gradient blue background and the banding was awful. They had a Sony 55" for only 50quid more, that had a stunning picture. So clear. We spent 45mins playing between the two to see if was a setup thing but it really wasnt. We didnt get the John Lewis/LG one needless to say.

If this is like every other LG set it will have bad response if you use any of the TV's motion compensation or cinema mode.
You can make it vastly better by setting the TV to "GAME" mode and then renaming the HDMi inputs to "PC" which will bring the response time down to under 40ms which should make gaming and watching sports a bit better on the eye...

LG tv's are generally set badly from the factory and require a fair amount of tweaking the settings to get the best out of them.
sebs
28 Mar 15 #171
I don't understand why renaming to pc does anything?
can you elaborate in slightly more technical terms?
f1refox to sebs
28 Mar 15 #174
"GAME" mode disables a lot of the TV's motion compensation features. Changing the HDMi label to PC disables a few more and tells the TV to allow the PC to control the settings more than the TV.

The less the TV is trying to adjust the image the lower the input lag using a combination of game mode and renaming to PC lowers it as far as possible.

Got a 60 plasma Model 60PB690V from PRC direct for £600, plays Sky TV fine through HDMI and freeview through antenna but when watching stuff through my PC or Roku box through HDMI, playback is bad (changing ports doesn't help). Image processing seems off somehow, noticed flickering between scenes. I filmed it on my phone and played it back slowly and can see how the previous image is wiped away vertically by the next one and if you pause it at the right moment you can see the top half of the screen is the new image and the bottom the previous. It happens several times per minute and iv very annoying. Manage to get one and put up on the wall last night. 5 years guarantee cost me £200 last time I bought a TV.

Only had time to set up wifi and plug in hdmi Virgin cable.

I watch a max of 1-2 hrs of tv a week as I'm on call 7 days a week, so this budget tv suits me.

Last time I bought a tv I paid £2000 - Now I just buy average equipment that lasts 5 years then upgrade again.

If people watch alot of TV then this TV is fine.

If you watch a lot of TV and the picture must be perfect with no game lag, then invest another £1000-2000 or get a life as you'll get fat and dumb.

Thanks O.P. My old LG TV started to play up after 7 great years yesterday!

29 Mar 15 #199
LMAO! £1000 more? More like £30 more for a much better tv.

Your 'fat and dumb' comment just tops off your idiotic justification for a poorer tv.

Your purchase may suit your needs of 1-2 hours max per week but most other people usually share their tv with a few other people. These other people are usually referred to as family and its possible that they may want to use the tv while other members of this group of people are out sharpening their tools or hunting for food.

BadPseudonym to emJayO

If I were you I'd cancel the order and go for the Sony. It's not the input lag that you'll notice so much with sport - that's more for gaming - but it's really slow for fast-moving content in general. When you get it you'll probably think it's okay; maybe better than what you've got at the moment. What it absolutely won't be, however, is the best you can get for your money. Check out the Sony W8 - it really is the best on the market in that price range at the moment.

Tbh for watching mainly sport or playing games I would look at the Sony W8 for a few quid more It has much better response times. After reading some comments I'm now unsure if I'd be better off cancelling and going with the Sony Bravia KDL55W8 for £49 more. I'm not a gamer and don't care about 3D but do like to watch a lot of HD films. The LG received an award from Which and comes with the built-in soundbar, but what are the advantages of the W8 eg. are the blacks better, what is local dimming and does the W8 lack this? I’m a bit wary of LG now after the experience with my current set:

Bought the LG 60PB690V from PRC direct for £600 in January. Displays Sky TV fine through HDMI and freeview through the antenna but when watching videos through my PC via HDMI or Roku via HDMI, playback is bad (changing ports doesn't help). When it comes to "quality" its obvious!
You need to spend less of your time on tech, and ALL of your time on developing some personal maturity?
For that is were true quality lies.
And if it wasn`t for people like me? Just think! You might never of have learned that.

Mike, I have Panasonic , Samsung and Sony , the picture quality of my sets are also in that order, however thats not to say some Sony's and Samsung TV aren't better.
Ive been to John Lewis to demo some of the TVs on offer, I was watching the football on ITV hd on all the sets however it was being fed via hdmi to all the sets as they had no working aerial.
I was disappointed with the 55 inch JL/LG TV, the picture wasn't that clear and was showing some distortion, the 55 inch Sony w8 was pretty similar, the Samsung 48 inch versions h6400 and Samsung h5500 looked pin sharp and I would say the picture quality was bang on.
I only seen the in store demo of the Samsung 55 h6400 so could not do a direct comparison, also the picture quality of the JL/lg 49 inch running from a demo USB stick was very good and compared well against some of the 4k sets.
All in all I'm more confused now than I was and would actually say a 48/50 inch TV would be better for my relatively small living room.

Wow, congratulations for having spent £599 on a terrible piece of hardware. I'm hoping, for your sake, you're just trolling. Otherwise you might be interested to know that the 50" Sony W8 - winner of many, many awards for its picture quality, is exactly the same price. Maybe you couldn't tell the difference when they're in different stores, playing different content and in different lighting, but do a side-by-side comparison and your tears will destroy the cheap Technika remote in your hand.

Think I'm going to cancel and go with the Sony W8 instead. Although I love the soundbar idea and it is a good buy overall, the picture on the Sony is reviewed as excellent, whereas the LG suffers with mediocre blacks and haloing with local dimming. Think it's worth the extra £49.

Ango, before you take the plunge make sure you view the set before you buy.
I spent a good hour viewing this set and others (with limited HD material) and come to the conclusion that this set is no dramatic improvement to my Panasonic g30 plasma.
I need a new secondary TV but have now decided not to replace my main panny with this, I will now buy a smaller second set such as Samsung h6400/ h5500 and wait for a few years for mass rollout of 4k.

For £499 I've purchased. Think this is a cracking deal. The built in camera sealed it for me over the Sony ( I already own a Sony W8 series TV and think they are great) as a separate camera for Skype currently costs £79.99 (Sony CMU-BR200).

I can also get rid of my NowTV box as the app is built in. Bonus.

I popped in to John Lewis today to have a look at the TV. Interestingly and as commented elsewhere the staff felt that the Sony TV at £50 more was a better deal for a superior set. The one thing that put me off is that although the TV is clearly a good set the soundbar loops around as a stand and unless you are resting the unit on a very large unit it will not rest properly on it which completely ruled it out for me. Limited options when considering wall mounting means yet again back to the drawing board. Voted hot for the fact it is a good deal but just not for me.

Modern LED screens have dealt with many of the problems that plasmas suffered from - screen burn, weight, size and power usage. Unfortunately the one thing that wasn't quite so good was fast movement. Now, however, that's been fixed - as long as the TV you buy isn't cheap, or an LG. Good-quality LEDs are capable of giving all the benefits of plasma (and more) but without all its negative aspects.
f1refox
30 Mar 15 2 #262
There is no LED tv's they are LCD and use LED as the backlight.

There is nothing that comes close to The PQ and motion handling of a decent plasma other than OLED available today. you just cannot get the deep blacks and bright whites on any TV using a backlight for it's light source.

The problem is the cost. A 55" oled is £2k+ at the moment and with LG holding the patents it's doubtful anyone else is going to produce them anytime soon which means the price will stay high.

Not unusual for the products that are technically superior at a point in time to lose out to other tech. Normally because of cost or limitations in the technology. In the same way, things aren't always improved in all areas where new and 'better' tech comes along.

OLED patents are held by many companies not just LG...CRT and Plasma have both been consigned to the technology graveyard so it's time to move to pastures new.LED is the best bet for now as OLED TV's are the best, but are too expensive due to high production costs and a higher yield failure rate. There are some very good LED TV's out there, but you need to go to a retailer who has dedicated viewing rooms to really tell what one is best.Viewing on a shop floor is not the best way.

Wow, someone likes being a contrarian, don't they? 'There is no LED tv's they are LCD and use LED as the backlight'. So ... they're LED then, aren't they? Otherwise, I'll counter your faulty logic with 'there are no TVs, the word is television; we just call them TVs for short'. Yeah, that didn't make sense either, did it? So shall we just leave it there and accept that because, a) they have LEDs in them and b) everyone in the industry uses this to differentiate between the old type of LCD which didn't, hence the advertising material all referring to 'LED TVs', that yours was a silly point?

There are better TV's and I'm no Sony fan after the shoddy service I've had from them. If you prefer the Sony, then buy that.

I'm sticking with my LG I mean JL :stuck_out_tongue:

What clinched it for me was the inbuilt satellite tuner.

My old sky box is getting a bit old and ugly too. I hooked up the satellite feed to the TV and tuned up the free channels and presto HD, less cable clutter, one less remote and one more power socket free.

I have a £30 CI module on order that fits in the slot in the back of the TV so I can use my Sky card. If only the TV had a built in cable tuner for Virgin.

Also I have a 1Tb hard drive plugged in for recording off Sky.

The remote is fiddly but ok, however the other click media remote that comes with it is great. (You get 2 remotes to use for your own choice).

Sport settings lowers any football lag and I was surprised to see my PS4 working quite well.

WIDI or Wi-Fi devices work through the Wi-Fi menu quite easily.

I hope to keep this for several years until something new establishes itself e.g. 6K?

Also impressed by the 3D (not a fan of wearing shades for movies) some things looked like you could reach out and touch them!

I'm waiting for Apple to make a brilliant TV oh and they are using LG screens.
niceguyrick
31 Mar 15 #286
Thanks, that's what I'm hoping! I don't feel I need anything more than 1080 as there isn't much material in 4k yet and I don't watch sports. I presume it's only newer material filmed in 4k that's going to benefit on the 4k TVs? I'd be surprised if they could top the quality of existing blu-rays by much, especially older films. I know some films are being released as "remastered in 4k" but I'm not sure they could be presented in 4k and look that much better than the blu-ray?

31 Mar 15 2 #300
Nope not trying to confuse you - but it isn't very difficult lol

Seriously - there is a input for satellite. I screwed in my cable that feeds my sky and chose Astra East 28 degrees and non scrambled channels.

It found over 400 channels (not that many as some are broadcast twice or have regions for the whole U.K. e.g. BBC East or North), radio stations and a HD channels. It won't allow me to watch sky as I don't have the card slot but freesat on sky (not normal Freesat as this TV doesn't have the licence).

I've put away my Sky box which was picking up the free channels.

One less piece of clutter for me. Hope it helps someone who is after a tv with a satellite tuner - I don't know if the card slot is compatible with Sky yet.
jr007
31 Mar 15 #301
It won't tune to the official Freesat system due to licence issues.

It will pick up the 'Freesat on Sky/Astra' and record to a HDD too.

Google Freesat on Sky. It will show you a list of channels vs. proper Freesat where you need a Freesat box.

Just take the cable from your satellite dish box and screw it into the TV, then select when tuning: Satellite. You won't any other equipment to watch free channels on Astra/Sky so you'll save money from not using the Sky box anymore.

You will need to adjust the frequency so you scan the lower bands too. Otherwise you will miss a few channels. Click on unscrambled as it will save you from scrolling on the tv guide/

So far I have all the free channels that my old Sky box would pick up and the HD versions such as BBC1/23 ITV C4 etc on HD.

I also have CBS actions/drama/horror channels.

To be fair the channels are not great if you are a couch potata' but suits me to quickly flick through after a long haul in the A&E. I just crash and watch a movie on demand/Blu ray while scoffing!

Just to confuse and try to clear this up, Just been onto AVForums and their review of this model and it does indeed have, as they list it, Freesat HD. Although the picture of the socket only states Satellite. They did not test that, and this makes it more confusing as you say you only get the free to view sat programs.
Even if you do get a CI CAM I am sure you won't get Sky as I am sure nobody makes a CAM that decodes Sky encryption. This may have changed lately with TV's now coming out with built in tuners but I think you would have to get the CAM from Sky.
Bit confused as you say in one post you have sent for a CI module, and then later you state you have no CI slot.

I posted earlier on the thread. It is a superb TV. I was originally after the 46" sharp from richer sounds, but they didn't have one set up and were rude and unhelpful to my wife and her friend (Leicester branch). As we wanted a free 5 year warranty we then switched to the 48" Sammy 5000 series at John Lewis. The 5500 they had set up looked awful, as did pretty much every sub 450 TV. I'd be really interested to hear if they were deliberately set up badly to encourage upselling....?

Just when we thought every decent TV was out of our budget we stumbled upon this. Looked superb and the soundbar swung it.

Not messed about with the settings at all, ps4 doesn't feel (to me) noticeably slow, and again, looks superb (apparently renaming input to pc, or using gaming mode helps). Tomb Raider on the ps3 looks like a ps4 game to me

Not sure on the football, might mess around with settings. Perfectly watchable. Films look great, SD (from a skybox) looks great, HD looks great. Blacks look black, nothing halos or smears, to me - perfect.

If you factor in 100 for a soundbar and 100 for the warranty (if purchasing elsewhere) you are getting a top of the range LG 49" for 300 quid. Plus the fact there are no wires for the soundbar helps.

Hope this helps you two?

If you ordered online, you should have got an email and a text if you provided a mobile (maybe landline too) number with your order. If you ordered over the telephone, I'd assume they'd told then.

I gave them a call and it seems things are a little different concerning deliveries to N. Ireland. Sent with courier 'DX' and then it will be passed to a local third party courier. Delivery expected next week. I guess Easter holiday's are delaying things slightly.

If you want a 49" screen or something close in size, I'd say it was a no brainer. Nothing else out there comes close to this price and includes a 5 year guarantee.

If you want a 55" screen, then there's not a lot in it. In store, I still preferred the LG (JL) picture, but would have been perfectly happy with the Sony and wouldn't argue with anyone that preferred it. However, I don't watch football and I believe the Sony it a bit of a sod to wall mount.

Just stuck match of the day on and I genuinely can't see ANY banding AT ALL. But that may be my untrained eye, the av forums review (link on first page ofcomments) definately mentions banding. So that's either tech review sites making a mountain out of a molehill, or ignorance being bliss for a layman...

received mine yesterday, I wasn't going to leave a comment but there appears to be a lot of trolls clogging up the comments to put people off this for some reason so wanted to give some feedback from an actual owner!

This TV is awesome, the picture is fantastic so ignore any worries there is no banding, blurring etc. I watched footy on it last night and it looked brilliant! There is a raft of settings to tweak things if you want to modify the picture, the settings posted by the chap earlier in the comments are very good and I have set mine to them. I have also watched Interstellar on it and it is the best TV picture I have seen from a set and you can see why it cost £1,500 quid when released last summer.

Had a play with the 3D and looks great, the menu and navigation of the actual television is fantastic its like using a computer in some ways as the remote is used like a mouse pointer. hard to imagine if you haven't seen it but trust me its a massive improvement if you are upgrading from a TV that is a few years old or more.

The sounds is good but no replacement for a proper home theatre system if you have one, although it beats a standard TV by a mile though for sound.

I can confirm there is a socket to plug a satellite feed in round the back, I don't have one so haven't done anything with it though.

If you are in the market for a new TV and this is in budget then its well worth the money in my opinion, it looks great, has loads of features, brilliant picture plus the guarantee.

thats good to hear. really no banding.. thats even better as I said previously I have the lg55lb730v and the banding is band. I am thinking of swapping it for this. as you have the set and you know what you are on about what are the blacks like? and have you tried and consoles on it and if so is there any lag on it?

thanks in advanced and I am glad you like the setting I posted as on my tv they look pretty good. did you set it to warm2 or medium.?

Good review... All these comments about the input lag, bad for sports, go for the w8 etc were starting to put me off.
This is £50 cheaper than w8 + comes with soundbar, webOS, fancy remote, camera and looks better IMO.

as long as the image comes out great, i think 99% of users wouldn't be able to notice much of an issue.
For the uber TV geeks, maybe the w8 is the better option. but as an overall deal this wins

Glad you're pleased with yours. BRFC fan here too!

1 Apr 15 #346
i don't have a console so not been able to try it out, it has the usual PC/Game modes which will no doubt reduce it down but hopefully someone else can comment when they give it a try.

Yes it comes with 2 remotes, one a standard TV style remote and the other the mouse pointer (I use the latter as I prefer the small unit and less buttons).

The blacks on this TV look great to me, given the massive amount of settings you can have it how you prefer. The setup wizard steps you through to make it easier so you configure it to have the picture you like best. Like I said I found the settings by timetosurf the best as I like deep blacks and natural colours, opposed to the high colour/brightness settings you can use out the box.

I was a little worried that the sheer size of the screen might pixelate stuff (as my old one was a 42inch Phillips) but I needn't have worried the image looks great.

Something to note is that the stand at the bottom needs to be fully sat on a firm surface, end to end. It wouldn't fit on my old TV stand so have ordered a new one that fits the full width of the sound bar.

As Rakios says there is probably 1% of people with bionic vision who can critique it but for the 99% of people who want a great picture to watch tv, sports and movies on it looks fantastic. If you combine that with all the extra features you get then I think its a great deal.

1 Apr 15 #347
I think what the W8 commenters (including me) were trying to say is that if all you're looking for is a TV that's probably better than your last TV then this is a reasonable option. If, however, you want the best picture quality you can buy for roughly the same price, the W8 wins hands down. Some people won't be disappointed by the LG, particularly as it's not likely that they will be doing a side-by-side comparison once it's at home. I, on the other hand, would hate to think that no matter what I'm buying, there would have been a better quality, multi-award winning option for the same sort of price.

Sorry to be a pain, do you have the width of the stand 'tubing' itself please, if that even makes sense? The 39" equates to around 99cm and we have a 97cm cabinet, so wondered if there was enough width on the stand body that it could overlap a cm either end? Many thanks.

After watching this thread since it started, comparing stuff in currys etc i decided that I had to view the set in person to compare it. I drove 90 miles to the Cardiff store yesterday and put the tv salesmen through the mill. In short the Sony W8 was excellent and so was the Samsung 55" but the JL LG 55" won hands down, the picture quality was superb after testing different media on it. I wasn't interested in the sound bar as I use an AV amp but was a nice feature. The operating system, magic remote, camera were all deciding factors.. For £649 this is a superb piece of kit to replace my 50" Samsung plasma..

HI All,

Picked mine up from JL in Stratford today.
Initial impressions

- Very very very easy to wall mount. I recommend you get everything plugged in on the back before you finally wall mount
- Easy to setup
- Magic remote seems cool, works better than i thought it would to be fair
- Sky 3d looks great, so far it seems to add more depth than "pop out" effect
- Unit itself is beautiful lookimg
- HD Images seem great straight out of the box, i havent messed with the settings yet
- Sport mode creates DSE and lag
- Havent noticed any motion blur just yet but havent watched a game of football on it yet, will report back later with that info.
- App store seems a bit clunky to get round will try skype later
- If you want to see how good the 3d effect is google LG 3d Demos and download a few, mind blowing, even my mrs is a convert

Hi. it might seem like a strange question but ... do you HAVE to use the sound bar? I was wondering how things would work if I later upgraded to an external amp and a 5.1 speaker arrangement.

Also I think I'm right at saying the sound bar only accepts input from the telly. I'd like to be able to inject audio from another source, for example, a squeezebox player on my Joggler or a picoreplayer. It's a bit like a diy Sonos arrangement.

I don't have this TV yet (I have ordered the 49" one - thanks OP, heated) but I do something similar with my existing TV. If I am using my 5.1 surround system then I simply turn the volume down to nothing on the TV. (I don't just mute it because "Mute" appears on the screen if I do that.) I have my sources connected directly to the amp.

In this case, it will be slightly different. The specs for the LB870 indicate that there is an optical digital audio out (TOSLINK) which is probably the easiest way to get the signal to your amp, and I'll re-jig my set-up to work in this way. There may also be an option to use an HDMI cable for this; I'm not sure on this point.

Hi,

I have plugged in: HDMI Virgin cable box, PS4, Xbox360, and a PC. All work flawless.
One usb stick with music and video.
One satellite feed direct from the LNB.
WIDI laptop,
Wifi,
One external HDD 500 gb powered by the USB for recording.
One composite from the cable box for recording as I can't record via the HDMI.

One fault: clicking on the tv guide to watch a channel via Sky, switches to AV if I have something plugged into the scart. Hence now I use composite and not the scart.

Recording video and playing back is great.

Can anyone let me know how you get on with Bluetooth for an external sound devices please.

Hi, I have ordered this TV but a bit concerned about wall mounting. I was hoping to get it as flush to wall as possible but noticed the power cable goes in the back instead of into the side like all the various other connections. In a review it mentioned "unusual three-pin power cable found on all LG's 2014 TVs"! Is anyone that has the TV able to comment on the power cord and how it is in the back. Is is possible to buy a right angled power cord for this? If so any links?

I was also looking at getting one of these wall mounts which have good reviews on Amazon. But concerned it wont work well with this TV and power cord!!

I saw one in Cardiff yesterday and it already had a right-angled power cord, so presumably that is what will be supplied.

I'm getting mine on Saturday 11th inst. so if you need me to verify absolutely that the 49" one comes with a right-angled power cord, I can do so then, but I would be very surprised if it isn't part of the standard kit.

Someone else recommend the one you've linked to earlier in this thread. However, I wanted something significantly cheaper.

JL (Bluewater) recommends the AVF JML8450 for these and I was impressed with it when I saw it. It gets your set as close to the wall as possible. However I wouldn't get if from JL as it can be found a fair bit cheaper elsewhere. I managed to get an ex-demo one very cheaply from eBay as it has a few screws missing.

Yeah I get that, but even if I press the input button on the remote it takes around a minute for it to load up the input menu. Surely that's not right... I've reset to factory with same outcome. (This is after the tv has been on for At least 5 mins, so it's not as if it's going through it's warm up process.)

Try IBRA ultra slim wall mount bracket on Amazon, saw this in Curry's a couple of years ago for £175 and is a brill piece of kit if you do not need to angle your TV sideways. Needless to say at £175 I was not paying that and perhaps nobody would so are being sold off cheap. Perhaps people were scared it was to flimsy for a TV but it is really strong and provide your wall is good not a problem. If you look at this suggest you read Q&A's.

Anyone have any experience of the 60" version? One of the John lewis reviews wasn't impressed with the picture quality.

jimjam14
5 Apr 15 #476
^ I'd like the 60" too, I went in last week to check out this and the Sony and liked both in the shop (both 55"). However, I really want a 60" so would like to go for the John Lewis one, but extra £250 seems hard to justify.

Hoping that maybe the 60" will drop before they sell out.

6 Apr 15 #479
The price ratio between all the sets seems good to me considering how much extra picture you are getting but to my mind 55" is all a normal living room can take. I have a 55" Samsung UHD TV and what ever anybody says about "We ain't got any UHD broadcasts" the benefits of the electronics that upscale or whatever give me supper right sized pictures whatever the input, as witnessed by my visitors expressing what a fantastic picture whenever they visit. Previous to this I had a 42" Panasonic that got the same reviews from my visitors but I wanted the bigger screen for Footy.

^the price ratio might look about right but JL are still hoping for folk to shell out £900 for a discontinued TV, they'll be pretty keen to to clear out all the stock for their new range (according to one of their salesmen) but as you've said yourself the 60" is probably considered too large for most folk - not many on this thread have said they were after the larger set. I'm hoping the 60" sets aren't shifting as quickly as they'd expected.

i received my 49" yesterday. upgraded from a 42" panasonic Viera plasma.

overall i am very happy. it is stylish and the image is good.

Viewing angles are great too. Though when viewing from extreme left or right side, the image does start to get 'whiter'.

The comments about the slow response from the remote are correct. For some strange reason, the settings menus seem to take a long time to pop when pressing for the first time upon turning the TV on. A subsequent press doesn't seem to have the same effect.

Strangely though, accessing menus through the Magic wand remote does not seem to suffer from this

My recommendation is to use the wand. The only downside to this is that you can't directly input the channel you want as there is no keypad on the wand. However, you can access the EPG guide very quickly. I am most impressed with the magic remote anyway... it's so intuitive to calibrate and much easier to use than arrows on a keypad. The scroll wheel lets you change channels quickly too.

You can surf the net but there is no flash support, so pages will be limited in media content.

the LG store has loads of free 3D short films which showcase the 3d. The effect with the supplied glasses was pretty cool. Look forward to watching some 3D films at home.

I think overall, it's an excellent buy. £499

Anyone got good recommendations for good apps?

the TV will reboot itself after you change the LG service location. I think the order i did it in was :

Then i went into the LG store to find skype.

Ok so i have got mine set up

Really good build quality, sound is really good for a TV , in fact best i have had

Couple of features not in the spec on JL site , voice recognition and movement recognition via the camera, not sure how these work i tried waving my hands around and it didn't do anything, need to read up on that

Blacks seem black to me, haven't got a special electronic thing to test them like reviewers but to my eye black looks black so that suits me , no clouding either

Watched football and didn't notice any smearing or anything, looked smooth

As for banding and DSE yes there is a small amount, dont notice when watching football but on a plain background there is a slight amount, no worse than any other TV i have had , dont think you will get one that's perfect except OLED, 95% of the time you dont notice anything in normal viewing, ( If you want to test for DSE download Homes under The Hammer via the IPlayer in HD and when they pan across the magnolia rooms this will bring it up, Every TV i have had has failed this test , if you dont know what DSE is then dont do this be ignorant !! )

As for the menus im not finding them slow, sometimes they take a couple of seconds but 95% of the time they are OK

Im loving the magic remote and the Web OS, its by far the easiest TV to navigate

I think thats it ?

EDIT: oh yes, tv does not wash out when you move your head,i can watch from either sofa in the house, when sat on the one not directly in front of the tv other tv's used to wash out, colours are great at any angle, black drops off at extreme angles though but why would you watch a tv at extreme angle anyway

Oh yes gaming, i only have a Wii and that's in the loft at the moment

Excellent TV. Had mine (55") since Saturday and I'm really impressed. Upgraded from a 6 year old 50" Panasonic Viera plasma. This is less than half the weight, uses a fraction of the electricity, and doesn't give you a heat rash if you walk past it.
The NFC sticker allows you to download the android apps on your (NFC enabled) mobile or tablet, which are specific to the 2014 line of LG TVs - a nifty remote control app (if your phone has an IR blaster) and SmartShare to view photos, videos etc.
If anyone is having trouble with accessing NowTV like I was, just open the web browser and log in. Now close the browser and use the start up tab, it should automatically log you in.

Thanks OP - my 49" arrived this afternoon!

As someone who had a basic 42" LED LG before I don't know enough to change settings etc. - I just want to plug my TV in and watch it! I also fancied a smart TV.

The improvement on my old LG is noticeable and the picture looks fabulous. Sound bar is fab.

I have a small Sony upstairs and I always feel like the colour of the picture on an LG is much more lifelike (although that's probably because I don't change any settings!)

I had my old LG for 4 years and it was brilliant - quite happy with them as a brand and so even happier with the 5 year guarantee from JL.

I think this is a fantastic buy for the price.

Be warned about paying with Paypal.

We bought the 55" TV, 2 weeks ago and had to wait all this time for delivery. It arrived today but after setting it up it wouldn't switch on. We tried everything, different power cables, different plugs but to no avail, so we called JL to ask for an exchange, as this one is clearly broken.

We were then informed by JL that due to the fact that we paid with paypal, the only way their system dealt with it was for them to give us a refund and come and collect the damaged TV and then we would have to order again.

Very annoyed!
grazie to zyany
13 Apr 15 #550
Thanks for posting this info, as I nearly always use PayPal as it does have advantages. However, another disadvantage of course is immediate debit, whereas most of the better retailers only debit on dispatch with a card.

Unfortunately, mine arrived with a couple of small cracks in the display, so I'm weighing up whether to go for a refund or replacement.
jr007
11 Apr 15 #532
So PayPal is acting as the seller or finance middle man?

I could understand this if it PayPal paid on your behalf like a loan.

Surely there should be some sort of financial agreement with instructions on who is responsible for the TV?
zyany to jr007
12 Apr 15 #534
I find it all very strange too but it's a case of "computer says no" which the JL CS representative was very apologetic about and to be fair to them they can only do what the systems allow them to do.

On the positive side they issued the refund straight away rather than waiting to receive the TV back, just waiting now for Paypal to push it back into my account.
deanos
12 Apr 15 #533
I would ring jl again and complain, all they have to do.is a swap out on same delivery
zyany to deanos
12 Apr 15 #535
That's what I suggested but because they had to issue a refund it couldn't be done. It was a case of reorder which I'll do when the refund comes through. I'll do it by phone and pay by card though as the CS rep put a note on the account to offer a few sweeteners by means of apology.

13 Apr 15 #549
I suggest you read your user manual to see if you can either change channel listings order or put channels into favourites. This is something you can do on a sat receiver, but not sure if this set has that capability.
The problem here is that unlike LG branded sets sold in the UK with Freesat, this TV does not have EPG and unless you can get an LG user manual for a European model with sat tuner included then their maybe no way to do this.

Is anyone else having problems using the optical audio out? I'm using it to feed my sound system, but the level fades every now and then. Wouldn't have thought the optical out could give this kind of problem unless there's something going wrong in the HDMI processing. However, there was no problem using my previous Samsung TV.

Hi, if you paid by Paypal then you'll have no other option than to get a refund (they did ours straight away without having to have received the faulty TV back).

We've had to reorder but we did it over the phone this time and paid by card. Can't fault John Lewis customer services, they've given us free express delivery (it arrives tomorrow) and are going to refund £50 as an apology for the inconvenience. The only downer on this is that they can't pick up the faulty TV when they deliver the replacement and that will be picked up on Friday.
DannyH73
14 Apr 15 #556
Had a 60" arrive last Tuesday but it had a small crack in the screen as well. John Lewis was great at doing what they could, but same issue with payment by PayPal meant I had to pay for a new one and would get a refund when they received the returned item.

They organised fast dispatch which meant I could have got it Thursday morning, but tonight was the earliest time I knew someone would be home to receive it. The screen being collected was always set for tomorrow instead of being collected at the same time as the new one being delivered. A bit of a clumsy process.

Had the same process with a Panasonic plasma I bought from them 5 years ago which just stopped working after a week. They collected the dud one 5 days after I called, and then had to wait for 3 weeks for the replacement - was Christmas, stock in short supply. Had a £50 credit from them for that one, but not this time around - took accidental damage cover at half price as a bit concerned about the longevity of the glass on this new display if it already had a crack from being in its packaging!

JL still much easier to deal with than some other retailers, and it's the ease of knowing they'll do something about the problem that keeps me going back to buy more stuff from them, but would be great if they could fix up this logistics issue of new one one day and collecting returned product same time, which might also solve the having to buy another and then getting credit for the original instead of just organising a swap.
grazie
14 Apr 15 #557
Fortunately, I didn't use PayPal because of the immediate debit and over a week to deliver (for free). However, I was offered a replacement with new and broken sets to be delivered/returned at the same time, so maybe you can't get this when using PayPal even if you pay again, although that would seem very strange. JL are good, but I wasn't offered anything for the hassle, so I decided on a refund. I'll probably reorder, as I was otherwise impressed (apart from my unresolved sound issue), with an outside chance of getting it a bit cheaper if the price drops.

I paid with paypal... hope that doesn't become a problem for me.

Interested to know what they would do in say 4 years if the tv broke...what would they do?
offer a full refund?...strange processs..
soldierboy001
14 Apr 15 #559
Warranty work is different than refund/replacement for damaged or not working properly on receipt so has different workings. If the set stopped working then they would try a repair and if that was not a success then a replacement set, not sure of a refund to full value though as reading your scenario you would have had 4 years use out of it. Think that would be down to the insurance company they use.

Bought the 49 inch version today from JL Liverpool. Pleased with it so far, but only after updating the software, until I did this, the TV was really really slow and would not recognise wired internet connection. pdated the software from the instructions above and all was well.
Not really got the hang of it yet though, as it's only been on an hour or so but GTAV on PS4 looks great and the kids love the 3d (they have commandeered it for 3D films from the LG store) and the free glasses from the cinema work with it. TV seems like a huge bargain at £500.

Had a look in John Lewis last night - they had both 55" and 49" on display. As usual they had a crap source feeding the TV, but it still did look good.
I saw what someone else pointed out as a lighter band at the top of the TV picture - but only when something bright was being shown. When the picture was darkish, there wasn't anything.
The 55" looks big, but the right-to-the-edge picture is sexy, and even the back is quite pretty (and has LG branded on it.)
So ordered via the website, and hopefully will arrive on Thursday!!

Got my 49" version today and been playing about with it, and so far quite happy with it, though I'm getting lots of "out of memory app closing" error messages, when trying to use some of the features.
Also, I've tried to play a couple of 3D movies which I've downloaded and dropped onto my NAS (QNAP) drive. I access these over a DLNA connection straight onto the TV. Normal x264 movies are fine (such as US TV series), however the 3D films I've downloaded are showing dual screens of the movie simultaneously on screen. Have I pulled down the wrong 3D format for playing back on this TV, as they are all " [3D] [HSBS]"

Good for normal TV. And more than enough if you have a neighbour very close by.

Starts to pop when you want loud cinema experience on very loud bass settings.

I used an external cinema pro logic amp for movies such as Interstellar and my house is detached with the neighbours garage in the way so I don't disturb anyone.

Otherwise the standard sound is crisp and loud for normal TV.

Hopefully people are still watching this thread, but I'm hoping someone will be alble to tell me if this tv has a specific feature that I need in a TV...
When you plug something into the headphone socket, does it mute the main speakers, or can they be conrrolled independantly? I bought a pricey Samsung a few years ago, and didn't realise at the time that it wouldn't be able to do this, seeing as my ancient sony can manage it...! Given that the headphone socket is also inaccessable round the back, this makes it a huge PITA to plug in and remove, would much rather it can be left in all the time!
Broathboy
19 Apr 15 #613
It does mute the main TV speaker when plugging in earphones.
Broathboy
19 Apr 15 1 #614
I have been looking the earphone muting the TV speaker issue. As far as I can make out you can plug the hdmi to female scart cable in (which come with the TV) then you buy an adaptor from Amazon or the likes which is a male scart to 3.5mm headphone socket for £5ish. Then plug your earphones into this. Aparently you are able to control the TV volume and earphone independently of each other. Hope this makes sense.

Have you had any problems with the sound fading and returning back to normal with your external amp? Are you using HDMI or optical? Still can't figure out why I've got this problem. I don't have an AV amp with HDMI, so can't check if that'll solve the problem.

Incidentally, although the sound bar is much better than most panel TVs with inbuilt speakers, it's nowhere near as good as my external DAC, amp and speakers.

I mucked about with the optical, headphone socket and Hdmi arc. All seem fine.

I turned off the TV sound options so it's running purely on the source without the LG TV sound enhancement, e.g. BluRay or PS4 or cable and satellite.

Can i ask. Does anyone else get this problem.

For example when the credits at the end of a programme roll and the back ground is pure black with the text being in white, it creates like a white kind of spotlight that runs through the middle of the panel and leaves either side completely black (as it should be)

Seems like the white of the text is lighting up the middle of the panel. It's weird and actually really beggining to bug the life out of me....

Got my replacement on Saturday, but it had exactly the same issue with sound. Called JL on Sunday, but they couldn't help, so they referred me to LG - a bit irritating. LG were useless. So why bother with customer support when you've got Google? Did some searching and it appears that this problem is not uncommon. I wasn't able to get the root cause as these JL/LG models were't ever mentioned, but it was clear from other models mentioned that its all down to HDMI standards and implementation incompatibilities between different equipment. Armed with this info, I switch the DAC and the problem was solved. Good job I had a spare!

A little miffed at having to find the cause of the problem for myself and that customer support departments couldn't be bothered. If I'd paid full price at over £1K for this, I'd have been furious. Still, the sound is now good, but I can't use the DAC I was planning to. If I hadn't had a spare, I'd still be none the wiser.

Having resolved the sound problem, I must admit, I'm beginning to find the banding/bleeding (whatever it's called) a bit disappointing. It's at its worse during opening credits, etc., which isn't something you generally check on a demo (I certainly will in future). Does the set configuration you suggested help with making this better?

Cant really get rid of banding , wasn't too bad on mine to be fair, but can change from set to set, if it bothers you get it changed for another brand

Any way of getting a free tablet (as a 49" buyer)?
Infiltrator
30 Apr 15 #678
The tablet is being heavily discounted today, I'd expect the tablets to sell out quickly - then what?

The 49" is sold out, the 55" has 270 remaining and has sold 13.5 per day so could sell out in 20 days.
The 60" has 109 remaining but is only selling 2.5 a day so will be 40+ days.

Free tablet till the 13th May, £100 discount till the 16th, what happens after the 16th? Will they seriously put the price back up?

These TV's are taking up valuable display place in the stores and there's more profitable TV's that should be in their place.

I'm in no hurry, but I do have an issue with forking out £900 for a discontinued clearance TV - if my plan doesn't work out there'll be another deal along shortly - it's hardly TV weather this time of year anyhow.

RE: Free tablet offer.

I've just noticed on the thread that there is a free tablet for purchases of the 55" & 60" TV now. I purchased the 60" earlier this month so thought I'd call JL customer service to have a little winge as they offer a 28 day price guarantee. I spoke to a lovely lady called Lucy and just explained to her that surely this constitutes as a price reduction as there is now the free tablet included to the value of £99.95. She asked be to bare with her whilst she seen if she could rectify this issue. A couple of minutes later she came back and said that JL couldn't just send out a free tablet so she said they would refund my PayPal £99.95 and I could just purchase one.

To cut a long story short the £99.95 is already in my PayPal account I don't need a tablet as I already have a nexus 7 and iPad so I'll just keep the £99.95. So the 60" TV now stands me at £799.

Hope this helps someone else out!

Get a chair, go to J.L.

Watch one TV for an hour and rest.

Find other TV, move chair and watch.

Haggle, match your needs, see which menu and screen works for you and buy or go home.

JL refused me the price match so I mentioned that people on this site had been given a price match and a precedent had been set. They responded,

"A small number of our customers have experienced difficulties when purchasing this bundle on our website as the tablet was not included at checkout. Therefore, the tablet had to be sent out to them separately, after they had received the television. This will be the reason for people on the forum receiving the tablet after purchasing the television."

So their stance is that nobody has been given a price match which is quite shocking.

If you have been given a TV / tablet price match after buying the TV on it's own, would you let me know and also the date you placed your order please? Thanks.

Thank you for your email.

We don't expect you to find a lower price at another high street competitor for the same individual product, sold with the same service conditions - but if you can, we'll match the price when you buy, or refund the difference for up to 28 days after you've purchased from us when you make a price match claim..

The offer for the Free LG G Pad 8.0 Tablet does not fall within our never knowingly undersold policy. As the purchase price for the John Lewis 55JL9000 LED HD 1080p 3D Smart TV, 55" with Freeview HD & 2x 3D Glasses is £649.00 we would not be able to reduce the price any further on this occasion. I apologise for any upset caused however I hope this clarifies why we are unable to reduce our price on this occasion.

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me,

Kind regards,

Using the Never knowingly undersold isn't the right policy this applies to.

You have up to 90 days to return the JL product so I'd suggest calling back and suggesting two options - either you'll return the current set and order a new one with the tablet, or they could make it easier on everyone and give you a refund so you can go in to a JL store this weekend to purchase the LG tablet.

Good luck!

Linked to this wall mount before, but it'd certainly save you the hassle of having to remove the TV from the mount every time you need to add/remove/change cables. The TV hangs on the wall like a very big picture and there's little prop to hold the TV out while connecting cables. I've mounted my TV without the sound bar, but spacers are included that should allow for the sound bar. Can't go wrong with £12.15 delivered.

Does anyone know a good online resource to get technical answers about these LG/John Lewis TVs? I have some questions about how to add channels (specifically 4OD, now known as All 4) and if it's possible to set the recording format. It seems to be some proprietary file format for recorded content, which means that the hard drive cannot be moved to another device.

I was responding to kalico's query on the file format problems they were having with their LG recorded media.

I don't see why not, so long as you're happy to let the TV format the stick to the partition/file system it requires.

You CANNOT use an USB stick. I have no idea why not, but the TV will reject it. I tried everything, formatted it on a laptop, tried FAT, FAT32, NTFS: Nothing worked. Plug in a USB hard drive and it's working immediately.

Makes little sense, but there you go.

My post about file formats was that the TV doesn't record programmes in a standard file format such as MP4, AVI or similar. It records programmes as multiple files (absolutely loads of them) using some, bizarre naming format with extensions that I don't recognise. A regular PC makes nothing of them.

I wondered if it were possible to change a setting to make it, for example, MP4. But I can't find any config details.

You almost certainly can use a USB memory stick, but it's probably more hassle than its worth.

This TV is most likely rejecting a USB stick as storage because it's seen as a remove disk, whereas a USB HDD will be seen as a local disk . The USB can be made into a local disk by flipping the 'removable' bit, but doing so is a bit of a mine field.

If you really wanted to use a USB memory stick, search for makes/models/sizes where the removable bit can easily be toggled.

Finally got my sound bar, picked up the LG LAS455H for £80 delivered from currys. Mounted on the wall under the 60" TV and connected using the wireless LG sync. Sound is now awesome and the sound bar and wireless subwoofer work like they were original parts of the TV.

I did the same a couple of weeks ago, I got the LG NB4540 4.1 Sound Bar from Currys for £150 and I'm very happy with it, it's still not perfect, but it is a HUGE improvement on the standard sound. It's so nice to have a bit of bass back. I connected the system with Bluetooth and it works great. Takes a few seconds to connect when it starts up and then that's it. I do wish the new thin TVs would come with sockets allowing you to connect your own speakers or sub, that would make life a lot simpler.

New update on the LG website. 05.00.60

Had to download it on to a USB stick, rename a new folder to LG_DTV and stick the update into it.

Pop into TVs and follow the prompts.

Nothing new but less sluggish and boots up slightly faster.

Hope that helps.

Another software update that doesn't seem to want to download over the air, but all good when downloading and installing from a USB memory stick: http://www.lg.com/uk/support/support-product/lg-60JL9000

Any new changes to the software?

Can't really see anything except the fonts are a little bolder and nicer. Can't see any other differences, so am assuming it's got to be a little refining here and then - everything does seem a little more responsive but might just be placebo effect. Nothing as noticeable as the jump to v5.0

I just think that it's great it still is receiving support.

Well I've noticed by normal remote is working fast again as it felt like the batteries were dying and the delay between remote and TV has been reduced. I don't use the wand that much.

Menus are faster to load. Less buggy.

Has anyone figured out a way to watch a TV channel using one tuner (either Freeview or satellite) and record the other and/or vice versa. I would have thought it was possible, but maybe the TV processor(s) doesn't enough grunt?

I can record and watch different hdmi inputs but don't use aerial inputs.

Yep, that's what I'm doing, but I'd prefer not to have an external tuner box, if there's is a way round it.
