Required an angle grinder for cutting a rather thick slate hearth for a fireplace and came across this from Screwfix. Reviews sounded good so decided to go ahead but the offer Screwfix is doing until the end of May means you get the smaller one for free! Will be using the smaller one to cut one side off an old cast iron rolltop bath and turning it into a bench for the garden. I did buy diamond edged disks for cutting the slate hearth which came in at 2 for £20, also good reviews Product Code: 71137.

I have the 5" version and its had some abuse over the past few years cutting 2" flags, sharpening chisels, metal cutting but switch went faulty could not find one for this size plenty for 9" so in the end managed to open existing switch up was just burnt on the contact so cleaned it swapped - for + side contacts and back to fully working again so yes I highly recommend these just a tip I always use diamond blades for masonry type jobs as the blade never wears down in size so you always have full cut :smiley:

Sound tip Hoppie thanks. Added in to the details about diamond disks as screwfix do ones for £12 or 2 for £20 and they have good reviews. Since I'll be cutting a large thick slate hearth I need the cut to be smooth and slate can be a nightmare for chipping/flaking.
@matot, could you elaborate on things please as I've bought this based on other reviews so would like to hear your experience with this product before I take a 2 inch by 5ft slice from a very expensive slate hearth.

It'll probably be like any budget cheap tools, basically fine but don't expect it to last or be repairable. I don't generally approve, but if something has particularly good reviews or you're expecting minimal use could be the way to go.
Also, Screwfix are manipulative with pricing nowadays. The big grinder has been £50 and the small one £20.
Note the date on the cached page, less than six weeks ago. They just raised the price by the cost of the small grinder and called it a freebie. Always flipping prices around or combining products.

I'll add that I've a Titan wet/dry hoover, Titan edge sander, Titan multi cutter, Titan oscillating sander and Titan belt sander and although I'm juat a DIYer they have all been amazing products which have done the jobs required to a better standard than other more expensive branded products which I've used in the past.

It's not much more to buy top flight brand names, and you can buy a MacAllister 230mm & 115mm from B&Q for £74. I'm not convinced buying poor quality even at a reasonable price is such a bargain. - Buy cheap buy twice !

MacAllister is B&Q's own brand! And seeing as they are the same group as Screwfix, the Titan tools will be at least as good if not better (low-end trade oriented). I've owned a wet-and-dry vac, power washer and various other Titan branded tools and they've all been excellent quality for the money. But otherwise I generally agree about buying the best quality tools you can afford, at the cheapest price.

Well I've had makita, dewalt and Hitachi products either not withstand basic diyer jobs or just die on me half way though jobs and the Totan tools I've mentioned above I've had for years, they do a consistently great job and I'm my opinion which as I've said I'm just a DIYer have a better build quality than the branded versions I've used. Unless you are a tradesman who demands top end tools for thier day job then I guess cheapish well reviewed tools are good enough for the DIYers.You also get rubbish quality branded tools at the lower price range aimed at the DIYer and they just don't cut it. I know because I've been there.

indeed cheap drill here has lasted me 5 years and still going , used it to drive 25cm timber lok screws into sleepers about 400 of them
Take away the cheap 4.1/2 inch grinder prolly worth 20 quid, makes the 9" 50 quid... plenty of 9" grinders on ebay for less than 50 quid...

titan tools are powerful but the build quality and reliability is pretty bad. only yesterday my dad had a sds drill give up on him.

Well that's the slate hearth cut and between the 9" grinder and diamond disk it went through it like a hot knife through butter with super clean lines. Very easy and effortless to cut with. Very happy with the end result.

As for reliability who knows at the moment, I've a garden path to do later in the summer so will see how it stands up to cutting lots of concrete slabs. Was quoted £100 to have the hearth cut by a company and I've just saved myself £10 and own a decent 9" and 4.5" angle grinder and 2 x 9" diamond disks in the process.

my issue is as a builder if my sds packs up on site it may well cost me time. so its better to spend a little more on something more reliable.

Thanks man, completely understand where you are coming from. If I was a builder and my time on site was precious then I'd be buying the best most reliable tools for the job. Its IT I work in so my tools when on site with a client is a laptop and by christ its not a cheap one. When it comes to keeping the bills paid and a customer happy there is no substitute for quality and reliability.

I already have the 9" for general diy and it is a brilliant angle grinder. Has slow spin up with is good and very powerful. Not sure about trade us but brilliant for diy and comes in a case.

The switch has failed on my Titan angle grinder. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement? Perhaps another make's will fit?
