Works on the three mobile network

- rodman

For those saying it's expensive, be aware that it's £24.99 for the WHOLE YEAR, not monthly.
- Khairul

When you come to register the sim card you will need to add your credit/debit card details. Note that this doesn't mean you can go over and you will not be charged, but all the same, i no it can ruffle a few feathers

COLLATED SUMMARY OF THIS DEAL FROM FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE - ie GOT IT: + HUKDers feedback in this thread...
NB: @ 25Apr15 this product/deal is no longer listed on PCWorld/Currys website - it too late to buy & start your 1yr prepaid plan

This is what the pack looks like: (if collecting from store, ensure you get the right pack - several people have been given the wrong pack!)
http://i.imgur.com/J4TCjXNm.jpg

This is a 3-sizes-in-1 Standard/Micro/Nano pre-paid SIM that gives you “1GB of [4G/3G] mobile date to use every month for 1 year

Sold online & in-store by both PCWorld and Currys at £24.99 currently as product code 121006 described as
“KNOWHOW Mobile Broadband 3-in-1 Starter SIM” though has been 60% more at £39.99.
You might get cashback by ordering thru a Quidco/TopcashBack type site - eg I'm due 21p!

The item was initially in stock to order online for (free) home delivery (but it sold out) + Reserve&Collect in store. Though not a Clearance/.97p item they haven't restocked online (perhaps we made this too popular!), & though Sale may end any time & eg become 60% pricier again it is still available at some stores @2/4/15!.
For an example of why getting delivered beats collecting - see this HUKDer experience:http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=24609534

I believe it's being considered a Hot UK Deal as at £24.99 up-front cost (instead of £39.99) you get 12 months of 1GB/m of UK 3G/4G data ie just £2.08/m with no "Overage" charges as your 1GB/m is capped (ie can't use more), has no contract & "You can use your SIM in WiFi devices, USB dongles, smartphones & tablets including iPads to connect to the service" & tethering/VoIP/hotspots etc are all OK..

Thanks to HUKDer Sykos for starting activation process on his SIM (ie paid £24.99 up-front for the £0.00/m plan) & sharing its features: ie:
http://i.imgur.com/m6oZk9L.png
(NB: As per packaging: "In order to activate the service a valid debit/credit card is required for validation - this card will not be charged." The service is by "Globalgig" [see below re MVNO] so you may have used your email address with that brand before. The "'WiFi on the go" is them supporting its use for personal hotspot & MiFi's, not any access to other peoples' WiFi networks.)

Not sure it'd be hot at regular £39.99 & the optional extra £4.99/m bundles would probably make it poor value.

It is a pre-paid SIM - "no contract", "no credit checks" - that gives you what it says on the actual tin (ie cardboard sleeve & website - ie
The Knowhow-Mbb website [it's their product] is your best starting position to knowing what it is:
https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual#

For a quick "Annual SIM Starter Pack Service Description" of what you're buying see their 4 page PDF with info on its optional extras (more data OR overseas use at £4.99/m), here's a direct link to it:
https://assets.globalgig.com/globalgig-uk/docs/Annual-Plan-SIM-Starter-Pack-Service-Description.pdf

It explains clearly that you're getting mobile data:
* UK 1GB/m for 12m included in price and that 1GB/m on 4G/3G is capped, no "Overage" use/costs available to you
* and can start paying £4.99/m to increase to 2GB/m in UK for rest of the 12m, still no "Overage", ie capped at 2GB/m in UK.
* or can start paying £4.99/m to use the 1GB/m in c40 countries for the rest of the 12m but then "Overage" applies both in UK @5p/MB and overseas at 15p/MB - ie no longer capped though they aim to send email alerts as usage reaches 50/85/100%.

Options are "rolling month-month contracts" for the rest of your SIM's 12 months; you can cancel an option but that totally cancels the entire SIM, including the original prepaid elements!
If you are interested in 30-day international contracts probably look at their Freedom/Travel plans instead
https://www.knowhow-mbb.com/

If you want to find the link yourself (as you shouldn't trust strangers), look on their website at
https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual
then look at the bottom of the page at the footer... the last text is "Service Description". Click on that link & then the Annual Plan SIM doc link.

Any reference on PCW/Currys website to a 30-days contract must be to the two optional extra £4.99/m which remain for the rest of your 12m term, unless you cancel - ie per Service Description document "All upgrade plan options are rolling month-to-month contracts. There are no fees to cancel your service.". (There is no 10GB/£7.99 or other options showing on the Knowhow website (ie PCW/Currys website errors)).

The SIM only provides data : per packaging "This is a data only service. Traditional voice & SMS services are not supported."
which nicely suggests the VoiP/SIP/WhatsApps/Skype etc services would be working as they are data not voice/SMS based.

http://i.imgur.com/I7rSZfFt.jpg
If you want to read the back of the actual product packaging, please follow this link
http://i.imgur.com/I7rSZfF.jpg

Note: when activating it asks for a mobile number - this is NOT the 07777777777 [a dummy/nominal number]... from your pack... but is meant to be your own [other] mobile number.

Usage monitoring: with the bundled 1GB/m your usage is capped at the 1GB/m & then service pauses until the next of the 12 months begins. Currently there is no online usage meter, just email alerts on the day when you hit 50/85/100% of monthly limit. The website says more functionality coming.

So if aiming to use in a SmartPhone with normal voice/SMSs, you would need a Dual-SIM/Triple-SIM phone (with at least a 3G SIM socket for this SIM it seems) where this prepaid SIM can provide 1GB/m of data, while your other SIM provides any traditional voice/SMS services. [This SIM v.likely needs 3G, so to use alongside another 3/Three network SIM that also needs 3G would require a more sophisticated Dual-SIM phone than many are - ie many older/cheaper have one "2G/GSM only" SIM socket - ie do some more research if that's your plan.]

When you visit the website to activate your SIM, it offers you the chance to upgrade there & then, but you can upgrade later. See these screens captured by HUKDer Sykos:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=24585576

If you're considering the £4.99/m optional extra probably worth reading this first
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=24585630

re the fact that the SIM is on a MVNO based on 3/Three UK network this is based on T&Cs that services provided by "Globalgig (which is a trading name of Voiamo Limited" & their Australian site says MVNO with 3 in UK.
https://www.globalgig.com/au/en/how-it-works
Update: First users have reported it is indeed on "3 UK" network, and named as "KNOWHOW EU1" as service provider; plus checking the # of my SIM shows it as allocated to 3 UK too.
Their official network 'Coverage' section is (farcical) at:
https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual#coverage
but as a MVNO on "3 UK" network best to look:
http://www.three.co.uk/Support/Coverage

And if you're looking for a 4G mobile WiFi hotspot device and more you could try...
HUKDer seedbot's EE Osprey 4G MiFi at £20 up front (+cancel)
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/ee-osprey-mifi-device-free-with-15gb-ultrafast-double-speed-4g-30-day-rolling-contract-2114457
or at £30 with no contract to cancel - ie on PAYG at:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/ee-osprey-mifi-2gb-4g-data-ee-prepay-29-99-cpw-2161843?p=24603814
(though there are some reports of Osprey's not being mega reliable - eg 'Dodo')
or HUKDer Technation's EE Buzzard 4G USB powered at £20 one off
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/ee-payg-buzzard-dongle-with-car-wifi-adapter-half-price-2gb-4g-data-19-99-cpw-2159897
eg get the 4G gizmo and use the initial data and then exploit this 4G SIM in them...
Though the monthly 1GB allowance won't last long if/when used at 4G data rates!

Tip: If considering using as basis of a data only 'Smartphone' - eg using VoIP/SIP for voice & other services for SMS : I can recommend having a look at say using a FreeVoipDeal a/c & their MobileVOIP App. You prepay c£10 on a PAYG a/c & that gives you 120 days 'free calls' to c30 countries landlines (+some mobiles) subject to rolling 300mins fair use. (We've used them/associated companies for c10 years & while not perfect are totally 'usable'.) [Plus of course Skype + WhatsApp...]

If your device isn't picking up the Internet data connection properly, try their FAQ, ie to set the APN as: mbb.voiamo.net
https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/faqs

Things we still don't know:
- Activate by? - any deadline to Activate the SIM by after purchase.[no expiry on pack/site!]
- 2G SIM socket - does the SIM work in a 2G socket (probably not)
- Content control? - is the Adult block removed during activation (with debit/credit card "validation"?)

16/3/15: Globalgig are also offering a free "Worldwide" SIM with 100MB/m for 3 months to use overseas... [with 15p/MB "Overage"]

Hot, but as usual Currys makes buying something from them an ordeal.

1. reserve online
2. go to shop to order&collect counter
3. avoid assistant I had to repeatedly explain the Sale of Goods Act to a few weeks previously, when I wanted a refund on a camera with a clear manufacturing fault *one day* after Currys 21 day refund policy.
4. another assistant finds my order in the system quickly.
5. assistant disappears into the back room
6. assistant comes out of the back room, with nothing...?
7. prints something off
8. shouts at second assistant across the shop floor in a non-English language
9. second assistant appears, is handed a piece of paper (with my order on)
10. second assistant wanders off and starts surfing the internet on one of their Apple Macs
11. a few minutes pass
12. more time passes. Second assistant now appears to be helping someone else with an iPad. the original assistant is in front of me, ignoring me, and typing something into the sales computer, in a one-fingered hunt-and-peck manner.
13. second assistant now appears to be looking at the item I ordered on the Currys web site.
14. second assistant comes back and says "are you sure you want this, we can do you a better deal than this?".
15. i look incredulous. I explain it is 1GB of data PER MONTH for a year, for 25 quid in total, and no I don't want to be upsold to something else.
16. second assistant doesn't believe me. I offer to show him the service description on the Currys web page on my phone, which I do.
17. second assistant now believes me, but doesn't know where to find the SIM pack. He disappears.
18. more time passes.
19. third assistant appears and hands me a large plastic security box containing the SIM pack (so off the shop floor), and tells me to go to the checkout to complete the purchase.
20. I go to the checkout. The checkout assistant is listening to the radio.
21. The guy scans the barcode, and the checkout computer asks for the SIM ID (ICC ID - 20 digits) and mobile phone number off the pack. Three times he scans them the wrong way around which the computer will not accept, and I have to tell him how to do it so the system will accept it...
22. FINALLY! I CAN PAY!
23. Escape! Run away! Never buy anything from Currys again!

Depends how you use it. I'm delighted to pay 2 quid a month to be contactable on whatsapp, hangouts and facebook messenger alone without having to mess about with a rolling contract full of minutes and texts im not going to use.

Sadly the CS (which is a different person each time) are still playing hardball, this time saying that I am beyond the 21 days refund policy so tough!

I've got 10 days to go before escalation so will bide my time with this one..

Ah... interesting, thanks for letting us know. I find it cheeky as well, I bought one long time ago and activated it, but I don't remember having read anything at all about a maximum period to activate it either. I agree with you that some things should be made more clear to customers, but we know how some companies are...

Good luck with the escalation, hopefully, you can get something for not making something so important as prominent as it should have been..

I had the card lying around from March 2015 and I tried to recently activate it to see if it still worked only to find out that the knowhow website that you need to use doesn't exist anymore so I can't activate the card that way.

I used Resolver to open a ticket only to be told by PC World Customer support that the card had to be activated within 12 months of the purchase except that they fail to mention this anywhere on the packaging or the receipt or the flyers that came with the package.

They are hiding behind the "It's in the T's and C's" except that in this case if I didn't have any access to the internet apart from the data SIM card then I would have had to activate the card just to read the T's and C's on their website before accepting the 12 month contract or not! I can't quite understand the logic in that.

The Resolver website allows you to escalate the complaint if you aren't happy with the original resolution but I have to wait 12 days before this can happen.

Where can you appeal, in the same Resolver site?

So, you were basically trying to return an unactivated card for a full refund?
If you're still within the 12 months where you can activate the card, it seems a good offer still, doesn't it? Is it not a good idea to use that card for a year in your case?

13 Apr 17 #448
Just tried using Resolver to get back the money on an unactivated data SIM card only to be told that the according to the T's and C's the data SIM card must be activated within 12 months of purchase.

I am going to appeal this saying that there was no information available to this effect at the point of sale so they can't just hide behind some T's and C's just to get around the issue.

Update re my unused SIM as unusable as Currys/PCWorld turned off the Knowhow SIM website/service by time I got around to trying to activate it - see couple of my postings earlier...

Pleased to report that true to their response in my Resolver case, DSG Retail have refunded me the £24.99 paid for that now unusable SIM. So all ended well in the end, just wasted about 1.5hrs getting that refund from them due to their very poor initial phoneline response and rather pathetic in-store inability to resolve something so clear & petty. Lesson is that the leopard really hasn't changed it's spots : they used to be RUBBISH at customer care, and still are BAD.
Meanwhile totally recommend trying Resolver, as recommended by MoneySavingExpert, when need something resolved!

Update on my requirement for Currys/PCW to refund my £24.99 as the service was no longer available when I tried to activate the service 2 weeks ago - and that after all that analysis I did of the (excellent) deal back in March 2015....
see
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=28524113

Their call centre initially rebuffed me [=pathetic!]; and in store they realised they should refund me but didn't have the power in store to do anything as "original transaction dated over 12 months ago" [=totally pathetic!]; but having put my refund request into the MSE recommended Resolver website for Currys/PCW to formally respond via their system I got a sensible response within one working day and have just given them my bank a/c details for a full refund for the service they are unable to start providing [within the 6 years contract law provides for].

Of course it's only resolved when I get the refund, but no reason to believe they won't now do so.

So if anyone else has an unactivated and hence now unusable SIM I would definitely recommend from personal experience the MSE recommended Resolver service... it's certainly saved me the hassle and cash flow cost of taking out a legal claim against them [which I totally intended to do otherwise!]

Ironically, I'm interested in this as I bought it for a child going back to school last year and upon arrival (before activating the SIM) the school banned smartphones. So I was left with a contract I couldn't use.

I'll also pursue a refund I think as you mentioned they said it could be activated without a time limit.

3/8/16: just opened my SIM pack and tried to activate [fortunately before I removed SIM from its card] and found activation website not there!
Phoned helpline and got would respond to the #. Few minutes later got callback saying that couldnt activate and I needed to go back to pack vendor for refund.
Phoned Currys/PCWorld and eventually they found order... admitted that there notes said "no time limit for activating" and gave another URL ie knowhow-uk.globalgig.com ... which also isn't available!
Played hardball about refund and that I'd need to go to Trading Standards!

PS
Have emailed globalgig to get it in writing from them that they're no longer activating the SIM. I'll then take that paperwork to local Currys/PCWorld and endeavour to get manager to see sense.

PPS
Got a prompt reply - reiterating that can't activate...
"We would like to inform you that you cannot activate the SIM card because it is an old SIM card (the Knowhow company doesn't exist anymore from March). If you want we can send you a new GlobalGig SIM card, but you will need to link a new plan to it.
"Please be aware that you can try to go to the shop where you bought the package in order to ask for your money back.
"Please note that we just provide the service, but as you didn't activate the SIM card, we cannot do anything for you."

PPPS
Well I tried in local store today. Very sympathetic but 100% unable to help as till won't allow anything related to "over a year" before, and manager doesn't have discretion to override. Would need to speak to Customer Services to workout what to do, but I didn't have time for that.

I was charged £3.90 the other day for going over when the original contract was supposed to be capped so no chance of going over to be charged. now because it's due to expire they think they can automatically roll you over to a monthly contract!

when you cancel your account check the acct numbers because I noticed that the original acct number was say 000056 and the 'new one' was 000057 so you might not be cancelling the right one. crafty bastids.

Have now had the email they said would come. As expected and as discussed recently in this thread no automatic payments, just an option, which I won't be taking up, of an ongoing monthly service.

Those who report they've had fees taken must, I assume, have either taken up a different option originally or be talking about a different deal entirely. The one I had is still looking like exactly what it said it would be - a 1 year 1GB per month deal that expires this month with no ongoing commitment.

I saw a payment on my credit card the other day for 68p, then an email saying my "account had been reactivated" (which I did not ask for, I just wanted to use my 12 months).
Luckily I still have my account details.

I have just emailed them (their live chat is closed) and got a reply from AA WiFi (?). I presume it's the same company, so have asked to close my account and cancel sim, etc.

I can see a few folk getting stung though. Cheeky gits, thought they might do this.

Thanks, but that's not my understanding. The Faqs page here https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/faqs makes no mention of any ongoing costs. And no mention of any additional charge at all unless you 'upgraded' the offer.
It simply says "You have already paid for your annual plan in store. Your credit card details are only required for verification purposes."
The original activation page, which is still live at https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual also makes no mention of any ongoing cost, unless you 'upgrade'.
Nowhere is there any mention of a 30 day rolling contract. It is clearly described as an annual plan.

I've just been on on-line chat and I've been told something different - that moving to a monthly contract is an option. The good thing is they only have an old card stored for me, so can't charge me anyway.

Are you sure you bought exactly the original SIM card - I have a vague recollection that there were two slightly different ones perhaps? I'm sure mine was just a 12 month one off with no auto roll forwards to an on-going contract.

Below is a copy of my on-line chat (I've obviously removed personal information):

Me
Hi, I purchased a SIM for 1gb data per month for a year around 10 and a half months ago. I wanted to confirm what happens when the offer ends in a month and a halfs time?
Thanks

Hello and thank you for contacting Knowhow Customer Care, you're speaking to Ariadna, can I start by taking your account number or ICCID please?

Ariadna
Thank you
Once you finished your contract you will then have the option to move to a monthly rolling contract
We will send you an email informing you of all your options
For you to have an idea, those are The Knowhow Freedom plans for your information:
3GB - £9.99 per month
6GB - £15.99 per month
After the first month, there are a further two plans available if you require less or more data.
1GB - £5.99 per month
10GB – £24.99 per month
You can use your full allowance in 25 countries, and you can also use the service in a further 15 countries at a Pay per MB rate of £0.20p per MB.
Please note – if you exceed your data allowance you are charged per MB in excess.

Me
So this is just an option, and if I don't want to move to this I don't have to do anything?

Ariadna
That's right

Don't know the answer to your question. But that webpage is about packages that you have to buy in store and activate online. And, as far as I know, neither of those packages is for sale in store anymore, which, if true, makes your question academic - as you won't be able to buy one.

Happy to be proved wrong though, as a new 12 months of 1GB for £24.99 would be useful!

hi it wasnt a 12 month contact
just 12 months 1gb internet for £25 for the whole year
you can cancel at anytime (it said this in the paperwork that came with the sim)
this is a 30 day rolling contract
so you will be billed £4.99 a mont if you dont cancel
but that upto you
LOG IN TO YOUR ACCOUNT HERE
theres an online chat somewhere on there as i found it twice
this post was just a reminder for all of you to cancel if you no longer want it
having spoke online to the online adviser. they said just need to cancel 48 hours before via email
so best do it a week early
and told me my billing cycle is 28th and my year is up on 28th march

1GB/MONTH FOR A YEAR (SIM ONLY) £24.99 1GB
1GB/MONTH FOR A YEAR (WIFI ONLY) £69.99 1GB

Do you know what's the difference between SIM and WIFI only? I couldn't find the explanation on their site...

Are you sure we will be billed unless cancelled? This was a 12 months 'no contract' deal, with valid card details taken on registration with the promise that your card will not be charged. Which has been the case so far - if you use up your 1GB per month allowance the sim just stops until next month, you're not charged for extra data, despite them having your card details.

Where, in the original conditions, does it say we will be charged £4.99 per month after 12 months? I may be wrong, but my impression has always been this sim just stops after 12 months, unless Know-How write and offer another deal to keep it going - and, so far, they haven't.

(Edit: And having logged in, there is no option to cancel, the data plan simply states it is a 12 month one, which is not very helpful, but not necessarily worrying either)

I have installed the android app mobiwol which allows me on a non rooted phone to disable background data on all apps but messenger and csipsimple, keeps the data use down but uses a hell of a lot of battery for the VPN. I noticed there are other apps but would they be any better battery wise ie does anyone know the least battery draining one. Juicedefender seems to crash.

FYI: This week Carphone Warehouse - ie another brand alongside Currys & PC World within the Dixons Carphone plc group - is to launch their own MVNO based on 3/Three's network soon!

eg see this review, which has a link to register for emails from iD

So not sure how long this Knowhow HUKD - ie a Globalgig / Voiamo MVNO product - will be on sale for in PCW/Currys.

PS: Actually just tried to look for this deal on PCW/Currys and Product code 121006 is no longer on offer at all, so looks like deal's expired for good.

I used http://www.ukddi.com they give you 2 incoming ddi's, easy to set up you just type the details into csipsimple on android and then verify it with any betamax acct so even though you have 2 sip registations you dial out on one and recieve on the other. The betamax can be prgrammed to leave the uk ddi when you dial

I've been using this on my raspi http://www.raspberry-asterisk.org/documentation/gsm-voip-gateway-with-chan_dongle/

I wouldn't recommend it since its kind of buggy, but if you want to use a mobile number with this then this works, sometimes. lol.
mk-donald
22 Apr 15 #390
I would also recommend checking out the alternative branding of FreeVoipDeal where you get 120 free days per 10 Euro (+VAT) top-up and the UK landline are free (or 1p after used up free allowance) and main UK mobile just 0.6p/minute. That's all using their MobileVoip App. [I've still got an InternetCalls a/c with 4 Euros left on it after many years with an 056 DDI but that while 'band g21' National with some providers eg BT, is expensive with others - eg BT's PlusNet brand - ie I don't use it.)
dlozuk
22 Apr 15 #389
Who did you use to get your uk/ddi number for incomming?
pengwyn
22 Apr 15 #388
For all those wanting calling I use voipcheap.co.uk which give 300 minutes free landline every week and 2p/min after 3p/min mobiles from start. Then get uk ddi for an incoming number and strap it on by validating it through the voipcheap website. I get strange looks when giving out a landline number for a mobile but hey ho so what heat.

No, you do get 4G on this SIM (if your device supports it, of course).

Assume you've been misled by PCW/Curry's misleading Internet listing where they undersell & describe non-existent options.

Best to read our summary - you'll spot the "4G" straight away on the package picture - at
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=24580746

Do realise that if/when you've used each of your 12 months' 1GB allowances you lose service until your next month's allowance begins. What a massive saving for you though - ie £24.99 instead of 12*£17=£204 - ie £179, 87% saving

Ace, just ordered mine. Currently have a 30 day rolling deal with Three for unlimited data which costs me about £17 per month. When I've looked at the logs on my phone, I'm only using around 1GB per month anyway. So great saving for me...
No 4G I guess, but on the flipside I will have saved over £100 after around 6 months with very little hassle. My experience with Three is that their 3G is damm fast anyway.

27 Mar 15 #364
No, I think dlozuk is highlighting that the email usage notifications sent at 50/85/100% of usage are actually coming through, ie as in the summary at:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=24580746
These email alerts (the only official way to find out how much of your capped 1GB remains) appear to be sent on the [next?] day that allowance threshold is reached - eg one user got all three together when his kids went streamed video crazy in the back of his car.
Usage months are NOT calendar months. You are notified of your allowance month-end date when you activate.

Yes - as long as your MiFi accepts a 3G or 4G SIM and is unlocked or else locked to 3/Three network.
They explicitly support mobile WiFi & tethering etc.
The SIM is 3-in-1 with Standard/Micro/Nano press-outs sizes so no potential issues there either .

None known currently. They send an email on the day you hit 50/85/100% of the month's 1GB limit.
There were some reports their website said an online usage meter could be coming.
Otherwise you have to rely on any local tracking in your phone/MiFi device.
(As the 1GB/m is capped there is of course no potential "Overage" cost shock, just the data service being unavailable until your next month's allowance begins.)

Well hopefully somewhere in your Nexus' Android interface it should reveal the actual network - though where, will I presume depend on which Android version you have. (My Android phone for example on an MVNO shows 'TalkMobile' as service provider and "Network: Vodafone UK".)
Otherwise maybe you have discovered that this Knowhow/Globalgig's 3G/4G MVNO service will roam in the UK which would be good to know.

It's a pity that it doesn't come with even a small voice / SMS allowance. I was paying until recently £10 per month for 100 mins voice, 500 texts and 250mb. I changed my EE contract to PAYG and now have a £1 per week deal, 25 minutes, 100 texts and 100mb. "The SIM only provides data : per packaging "This is a data only service. Traditional voice & SMS services are not supported."" - you don't even get a phone number - just a nominal/dummy 0777...

How about placing the calls over Voip? That way it uses data to place the calls. I use skype as we have a subscription to Office 365 and we get 60 "world" mins a month to use.

re 4G v 3G - When I was reading one of the early reviews of one of the EE 4G MiFis as I recall it they were testing it in Wembley area and they got better 3G than 4G at the time and attributed it to congestion.
So maybe its all the heavy bandwidth consumers piling onto 4G that have left 3G better, though two initial speedtests hopefully aren't indicative of the year ahead of you.

100% definite - this prepaid HUKD package offers 4G data service - subject of course to the MVNO 3/Three UK network providing it where you are (as well as 3G) and 4G is explicitly featured on the actual Pack you get (and all this is detailed in the summary I've linked to many times). The lack of 4G on the listing is just PCW/Currys websites describing it badly (maybe to try to put you off buying it so that you buy something more expensive....). The summary also includes link to 3/Three coverage map - toggle that into 4G view and search...

If I recall everyone/thing correctly they provide no counter to you - ie there is currently NO online counter/usage tracker fuction, but someone activating reported that the site said one c/be coming.
They send alerts (presumably by email and/or your other mobile # (with SMS service) that you give during Activation) at 50/85/100% of the month's allowance.
Otherwise it'd be down to "your duty to monitor" - eg via a function in say your Smartphone's software, or if using a device to share the data SIM service - eg a MiFi box - to use its counter (many have them as people have volunteered above).

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=24580746

As others mention above too - whatever device you install it in - eg MiFi or Phone - may log usage for you.

One good feature of the prepaid package is that reaching the 1GB/m limit "just" means no data access until next month's allowance starts, rather than any financial penalty for the "Overage", though clearly inconvenient.

With the 3g mifi I have to log in to the device as kar999 states and then look at the usage.
With :
Huawei E5372 4G I paid £76.99
You set the amount of usage and the date of reset. It then shows you on the device your actual usage.

They work like any Router and you can log onto them with by typing something like 192.168.1.1 into a connected browser. There will usually be a statistics screen which logs upload and download volumes etc as well as all the other screens for the password and protocol settings, etc. There should be instructions with any Mif-fi.

It all depends on your location. I get a great Three (and EE) 3G signal where I live at home and take my holidays in Wales but Vodafone and O2 are nowhere to be seen,

From my own experience on my other travels I can also say I've found Three and EE to be more widely available and subsequently ditched my Giif-Gaff (O2) sim for that very reason.

Is that because you'd opened the wrong Pack and only realised you had been mis-sold you the wrong item when tried to Activate it ?

Because there is nothing in their (eg Currys) T&Cs to say you won't take back an unopened SIM Pack - eg they only exclude (as they are allowed to). where:
"•There is a contract for services with the product and you have started using the services; this would include, for example, a mobile phone subscription" [clearly if Pack unopened you can't have started...]

PS: Absolutely no issue whatsoever today with returning an unwanted & unopened Pack at Curry's. [The one picked up in store, but then had chance to order another online with a Quidco £10 £back bonus.]

The HUKD is for the prepaid UK only data card for 12 months. You can elect at any stage in your year to pay for the International Option for the entire rest of your 12m a @+£4.99/m that allows for use abroad too, in 40 countries (including Spain per their site) BUT that does away with the 1GB/m usage cap, so you can consume more than your prepaid 1GB/m at 5p/MB UK 15p/MB Overseas. If you decide you no longer want to pay the extra £4.99/m you can cancel but that cancels (after a month's notice) the entire SIM, ie you'd lose the rest of your prepaid months.
It's all in the summary back at
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/knowhow-three-network-1gb-per-month-mobile-broadband-for-12-months-24-99-annual-2160024?p=24580746

Where you may be thinking of 'adding Spain' is with the 3/Three network themselves (ie NOT this HUKD with a Knowhow/Globalalgig MVNO on top of 3/Three's UK network) who offer various 'Feel At Home' opportunities to use a 3/Three UK contract or PAYG in a number of countries overseas - see my earlier comments to other people re that as they are adding Spain in April to their Feel At Home destinations.

If it helps anyone else teaching DSG Staff how to do their job: the SIM # and (dummy) mobile number are there on the back on the pack - eg from my summary of this HUKD at

there's a link to a legible size scan of the back of a pack:
http://i.imgur.com/I7rSZfF.jpg
there are 3 barcodes on that with numbers underneath [I'd totally blanked out the middle SIM # of mine]
top = product barcode; middle = SIM #; bottom = mobile number ("dummy") 07777...
[For the future I'll 'blank' out with black rather than whitem then it'd be more obvious what has been blanked out.]

I presume your multi-SIM phone copes with 2 x 3G+ SIMs or have I got that wrong - as for me that remains an uncertainty as I've always found/seen a 3/Three based SIM requires a 3G/4G circuit and hence it's an issue with using this Knowhow/Globalgig MVNO 3/Three network SIM in some multi-SIM phones alongside another 3/Three network SIM as often one SIM socket has only 2G/GSM circuitry/capability.

Plus off-topic on to International data & alternative SIMs [as we're not interested in the Knowhow option] : I've only just on the 3/Three "PAYG Price Guide" noticed that there's also a £10 Add-On option too with a far more meagre 100m/3000t/500MB rather than the £15 300m/3000t/UnlimitedGB [<25GB when 'Feel At Home' countries overseas] and that'll (+WiFi use) suit me just fine next time for my Italy visit = £5 saved. [I did get my first £15 pre-loaded Add-on SIM for <£10 anyway.) though that £15 Add-On otherwise for upto 25GB seems amazing value to me.

I have used the £15pm top up in the states it works great.
For Just over £2pm month though I can use this for UK data and just use 321 for calls/texts on another sim (I have a multi sim phone)

I currently spend £7 for unlimited texts 250m min calls and 500Mb data

I can drop that and doubt I'll use £5 worth of calls on 321 tariff so will be still saving

When overseas I will top up £15 for roaming or buy a local sim (whichever is cheaper)

We have a Peugeot 2008 that was 6 months old when we bought it. The sat nav didn't have postcode search...which we thought was madness! Went into the dealership and they updated the software for us which included a range of other improvements .
The problem with French car companies is that they tend to release stuff before it is ready. So you will probably find that the software will be updated in due course (or has already been updated?) to allow the stuff to work as intended.

If it were me, I would give Citroen UK's head office a call. Tell them your grievances, and say you are going to be uploading a video to your Youtube channel (always good to sound like you are swinging willy in the world of Youtube  !). I did the same with a persistent fault on a Nokia phone; within 2 days I had a guy from Finland contact me directly, arrange for a replacement the next day, and got a free Fitbix Flex too

Basically, don't accept your current situation. Duke it out with Citroen; you'll probably get a nice financial result out of it

In theory yes - there's no activation deadline/expiry date on the package or mentioned on their site, but you'd have to be very trusting to assume that the Starter Pack you're prepaying for, and the provider, will both be there in identical form if you waited 2 years to visit their website to Activate - seems like quite a gamble to me.

10 Mar 15 1 #275
I was working nearby and reserved it for collection, turned up and they had it waiting for me but it was a regular monthly pack, i did query it and was told the packs are all the same and the service is registered against my purchase and will give me the correct activation screen (which it didnt and customer services said wrong pack).

I went straight back and stayed calm, got pack changed and said so you will knock off some money for fuel (to which they reduced it by £5).

Bit annoying but hey ho (it was the last pack in the store!). I think the sales guy who served me wanted it for himself as he tried to put me off the initial sale also.....

I asked if I could add the international roaming for a month and then cancel. The answer was yes and no.

Yes you can cancel with 30 days notice, but no you cant cancel the upgrade, just the entire account, thereby loosing whatever is left of the prepaid 12 months.

I bought the sim anyway as at just over £2 a month for 1GB of 4G data its still a great deal.

I'm off to the states in 6 weeks so I might call back and see if someone else has another opinion regarding having roaming for 30/60 days.

It seems crazy to me that you cant change the tariff back without cancelling the whole thing. Maybe the T&C's are that way to discourage occasional roaming on holiday etc; after all why would you pay £60 per year more for something you may only use a few times a year??
wenttoabetterplace to JonathanCassar
10 Mar 15 #270
Sounds like you are probably better off with a Three contract of some sort...
mk-donald to JonathanCassar
10 Mar 15 #271
Thanks for that clarification - that's is at least prima facie compliant with what their site says, although clearly as you highlight all a bit bonkers - though can understand them not wanting international on/off as people 'holiday' or not. The Hot UKD is definitely the bundled 1GB/m for 12m @ £24.99 prepaid!

As I mentioned above with another HUKDer, I recommend having a look at 3/Three's "Feel At Home" facility (which covers the USA) and with a £15 add-on on a PAYG SIM (which you can sometimes pick up for less than £15 - barcode 5050553373071 ) gives 300mins/3000txts UK# calls + Unlimited data in UK and 25GB while overseas in their "Feel At Home" countries, all over 30 days. ie just get a 3/Three SIM and top-up £15 as a All-in-one £15 add-on
http://support.three.co.uk/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBISAPI.DLL?Command=New,Kb=Mobile,Ts=Mobile,T=Article,varset_cat=internetapps,varset_subcat=3583,Case=obj(3833)

However their Feel At Home use does not support Tethering which may be a make/break issue depending on your hardware/usage; but allows you to use the bundled mins/texts to UK numbers while overseas & doesn't surcharge you for receiving calls/txts from the UK - eg which in the USA on my own PAYG o2 a/c for instance would cost 99p-149p/min to call UK numbers & 49p/text and 99p/min to receive calls - oh and just £6 per MB, so the 25GB would cost me 25,000 * £6/MB = £150,000!

And if I got this Knowhow SIM and added the International £4.99/m (for the rest of the 12m, or cancel the whole lot & lose the rest of the £24.99 too)... once gone through the 1GB/m (with more chance to do it as Hotspot/Tethering/etc all permitted) would cost 15p/MB there, so 25GB used that month in the USA would be 24,000 * 15p = £3.600.

Even in a EU country the 3/Three £15 add-on for a 'Feel At Home' country can be mega value (there's a lot fewer than the 40 countries in Knowhow/Globalgig's international list though).

PS: Incidentally the 3/Three PAYG Add-ons that give your Feel At Home data begin at £10 with just 500MB + mins/txts.
On the Three site just search for the PAYG Price Guide where they have a really clear table of all the options (page 4).

Just to mention that this definitely works in a "normal" 4G phone (in my case a cheapo Huawei). The phone displays KNOWHOW EU1 as the phone network. It automatically assigned 3 as the APN, so I had to create a new one for it to work. If attempt to make a call, you get a pre-recorded message saying it's not allowed.

I found that you can also create a simple Task in Tasker to automatically switch on the phone's Hotspot capability upon a boot: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/2bgzwr/automated_incar_wifi_hotspot_with_tasker/

Similar apps will also work if they see your car's Bluetooth MAC code, but I just wanted it to work in my pocket when out and about. This method also has the added bonus of being a pocket warmer when the device runs hot :stuck_out_tongue:

Nope there's no Activation deadline information out there. Nothing on the Starter Pack you get . Nobody's noticed anything inside the Pack [I haven't opened mine, just in case I want to return it in the 21 days as 'unwanted']. There is nothing apparent anywhere on the website. One would assume you have a year from purchase to Activate. If you purchase using a debit/credit card that should give you 120 days 'chargeback' protection if it didn't work when you came to use it [and PCW/Currys/Knowhow-MBB played hard ball and/or had given up].
Couldn't recommend buying 4 packs to try to build up 4 years usage as that is expecting a bit too much from them - unless you get an assurance in writing from Voiamo that they will be valid on the same terms to use them in 1/2/3 years time. It seems to be expecting too much of them all - Knowhow-MBB/Globalgig/Voiamo. After all the Knowhow-MBB venture appears to only be about 6 months old, though Globalgig going a lot longer. The UK telecomms/mobile shake up with BT & EE, 3/Three and o2 is bound to muddy the future waters. Still it's your gamble...

Yes the website T&Cs are clear it's services provided by "Globalgig (which is a trading name of Voiamo Limited" and it was their Australian site saying MVNO with 3 in UK that first led to suspicions of who was providing the UK 3G/4G network.
I'll add the tip about existing Globalgig a/c into the summary :smirk:

It's clear the pre-paid bundle is for 1GB/m for 12m in the UK only (via a MVNO on 3/Three UK's 3G/4G network). As you say you can optionally change the bundle to include International use and Spain is included. That costs £4.99/m from when you elect to add the Option - ie potentially during the initial Activation, or anytime later during the 12 months. The Service Desciption doc is clear "All upgrade plan options are rolling month-to-month contracts. There are no fees to cancel your service." so in theory yes you can upgrade for a least one month period and then cancel (ie maybe a minimum of 2 months if they are selling only in month periods) though one HUKDer claimed he had difficulty in cancelling (though he wasn't upfront about precisely what he was cancelling, ie may not apply to this package or even this service provider). What we don't know is which network(s) Globalgig/Voiamo has roaming arrangements with in Spain and it's Tenerife island. It would be worth your while using the email contact on their website to ask specifically and then to try to find a Spanish website coverage map to see if your location there is likely to be well served.
This thread [from Googling] seems to indicate you'd be frustrated in Tenerife - even where someone had been told it WOULD work!
https://twitter.com/globalgig/status/512817361804472321
Also beware that once you opt to take the International package you open yourself to "Overage" if you should exceed your 1GB/m allowance - ie 5p/MB in the UK and 15p/MB abroad. There currently seems to be no 'meter' for you to know what you've used - ie you have to rely on messages (SMS/email?) at 50/85/100% of allowance and they, like any say €50 excess charge cap, are best endeavour type things due to time lags - ie be wary! Personally I would consider getting a 3/Three SIM in the UK with All-in-one £15 add-on that gives you some voice & SMS & data in "Feel at Home" countries for 30 days - ie unlimited UK data & 25GB while abroad! [Spain is 'coming in April' if that's in your 7 week lead time].
http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Phones/Feel_At_Home
as that also lets you call/SMS UK numbers free and receive UK calls without surcharge.
Again worth checking coverage out there - looking good....
http://www.three.co.uk/Support/Roaming_and_international/Mobile_Roaming?content_aid=1214306371189
[Remember that just because Globalgig use 3/Three as the basis of their MVNO in the UK, that does NOT mean they use 3/Three network anywhere else in the world - it's up to them to make arrangements with whichever foreign networks to decide who to allow international roaming with!]

Their official network 'Coverage' section is (farcical) at:
https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual#coverage
but as we know it's a MVNO on "3 UK" network of 4G/3G your best bet is their coverage map
http://www.three.co.uk/Support/Coverage
You can zoom in there on the map of Scotland and toggle into say 4G view - and see for example the central belt conurbations get 4G. But as you say - with any mobile service it's worth checking their coverage map before parting with £. And we know this deal is a MVNO on the 3/Three UK network.

For the hard of hearing and for those that don't understand how many months there are in a year.... THIS IS £24.99 for a WHOLE YEAR:wink:
webnet
10 Mar 15 1 #255
Sounds pretty good. 2 quid a GB is not too expensive (I used to get 15 GB/month for 7.50, from Three), and I still have a suitable USB modem, plus a mains powered (Three) wireless router to 'share' the USB modem with a few devices (great as a business backup, just checking for e-mail, for example, if phone lines go down).

Obviously I will need to be sure the data doesn't get gobbled up by automatic updates of Android apps, etc, because quite a number of apps have an "update on wireless only" option (which would still use up a chunk of this 1 GB, if allowed to run).

Took about 12 hours for me - activated yest evening and finally went live at about 8 this morning, labelling itself as Three in my TPLink mi-fi.

By the way, anyone who's had a GlobalGig sim card may find they already have an account with KnowHow. I had trouble registering as the form kept saying my username was already taken, with the form refusing to submit. This seemed odd as the form hadn't, at that point, asked for a 'username', though it had asked for name, email and password.

I solved it by using a different email address (which is, of course, effectively the 'username') and realised after finally registering that they are part of GlobalGig, with whom I already had an account, long dormant, registered on the original email address. If I'd known I could have just added this sim card to the old account.

This is such a great deal. For £24.99 I can watch a whole 3-minute youtube video every day!

Similar message, when I activated it in the morning the message said: card activated... it might take 8 to 24 hours, although it's usually quicker.

I just tried again now, it allowed me to re-register the same card and this time it said it should be ready in 4 to 24 hours, although usually quicker as well.

Just checked about 30mins later and working fine now. So, it seems the 1st time it failed even though I got a successful message upon activation. Let's hope their internet works better

Thank you much for the appreciation! It's just like being back at work again (unpaid). I used to turn technological uncertainly and ignorance into something known, tangible, usable & documented  HUKD, at its best, is a great community forum to share knowledge and experience - and for 'MoneySavingExpert' style analysis. BTW let us not forget ... thanks to mike_6480 for spotting & posting this HUKD that I've elaborated upon

Of course as I mentioned before the really sad thing is that the customer shouldn't have to do that research. They should be presenting this item in a really customer friendly/enticing/explanatory way as it seems (rightly) there's quite a potential market for this product if explained clearly and consistently it should sell itself - but it's clear a leopard doesn't change its spots - we're still talking about Dixons + DSG + PCWorld + Currys + Knowhow (+ Carphone Warehouse)!

Though why would they pro-actively sell the cheapest/best value £2.08/m deal when they can sell ones for 3x 4x 5x times that amount per month

It's quite clear that the SIM is a "no contract" SIM with just 1GB/m data allowance for 12 months and that after that it will get no new allowances and will become useless (and with no voice/SMS number to preserve of course, binnable).

That said it is packaged as a "Starter Pack" and it would make sense for them to pro-actively offer a renewal, and from HUKDer Activation descriptions (I haven't done it yet) Knowhow-MBB [aka Globalgig, Powered by Voiamo] want at least an SMS number [and I'd guess an email address?] to sent usage notifications to, so probably a "it's your last month... why not call us" one too.

Of course if there is no worthwhile renewal offer frankly it matters not a damn as you've nothing to preserve on the SIM - no contract, no phone number, no PAYG balance, no 'subscriptions', no notice period [and hopefully no saved Contacts and SMSs from your other phone SIMs] - so throwing it in the bin just reminds you that you can't get data thru it anymore and you have 100% freedom to look elsewhere.

My tip, if the SIM proves successful for you - in terms of (a) 3G/4G network coverage (b) throughput achieved and (c) data needs met (ie <1GB/m) - is to watch out for PCW/Currys still selling it & reducing it again as your year runs out.

I'd advise: Buy one now** - ordering online- while they are still £24.99, but I couldn't suggest buying an extra one to 'bank' just yet, even though it might revert to being 60% more expensive at any time, due to it's not being a proven good buy for you ... yet, hopefully... and of course a year is a long time in mobile data with all the telecomms/network musical chairs in the offing with BT & EE, 3/Three and o2 etc etc.

** Remember you have 21 days at PCW/Currys to return an item that you decide is 'unwanted' - so if the next few weeks shows early adopters as struggling to get throughput/connections - which it does NOT yet, au contraire once actually activated people have said it's fine - then you can always return that first unopened £24.99 Pack. [I've kept mine sealed just in case...:stuck_out_tongue: ]

Dear mk-donald,

Just want to say a huge thank you for your time + effort you've spent in telling us all the useful and detailed information, for actually going to the shop and buying one of them to tell us the precious accurate first-hand experience, answering all of the questions tirelessly with such an open-mind. You are the definitely one of the best hukd members. I think you deserve medals. Thank you very much.

I have one question, some may have asked before but I haven't read all of the 220+ comments yet.

Would you know what would happen AFTER 12 months (post-activation)? Does the SIM just expire? Or the company would offer a renewal?

I know I am being optimistic as I believe this company is quite new and it could repeat "ovivo" history...

I think I will get one for my dual-sim phone very soon

P.S. no expiry date can be a good thing, that means I can probably buy it and store it when I actually need to use it, i.e. after my current credit expires. But then, it could be one day :P

If you have a rooted android phone/tablet you can use AFWall+ as a iptables firewall app which will allow you to quickly and easily decide what gets blocked when you are on 3g. This is dead handy as it means I've been able to tell it to only allow my communication apps via 3g. This means google music, app updates and other background activity don't eat all the data.
wenttoabetterplace to Sykos
9 Mar 15 2 #228
By the same token, if you use a Windows Phone, just leave battery saver switched on. This cuts the data connection to all apps running in the background. You can then choose to over-ride this default setting for specific apps by going into battery saver and changing the background usage permissions.

A simpler and more elegant solution I reckon as all of your apps can still work - but the vast majority are barred from doing so until you open the app manually.

Hence why always a good idea to buy such things with a debit or credit card - should be able to get 120 days 'Chargeback' cover, ie that should "protect" your first 4 months [assuming you Activate soon after purchase].
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/visa-mastercard-chargeback
[eg I got my last Ovivo Mobile SIM fully refunded by Tesco Bank when their service vanished without any notice at 5-6pm one day, as a MasterCard purchase within chargeback period]

So in that worst case scenario most one could lose is say months 5-12 ie your £24.99 would have bought you only 4m @1GB/m.
Where say a 3/Three prepaid SIM 3GB over 3m is £20.49 (though of course other "HUKDs" are available - eg 6GB of EE for 90days can be had for c£15, though I don't recall if that allows tethering etc).
(Plus of course as this is a data only service, we'd have no issues with a mobile # and needing to Port it elsewhere - ie none to port.)

And as Knowhow-MBB is presented under the Dixons "Knowhow" tagline they should feel some responsibility to us too if the worst did happen

If you're activating it any time soon look out for the 'mobile number' tip (a couple of msgs back) ie they are asking for another mobile # to SMS with usage alerts.
Plus if you have the time/opportunity please try the SIM in an (old) 2G only device - I believe it requires a 3G network and won't connect to network, and would be good to have a first-hand confirmation. [Mine's not getting activated for a good while yet.]

I wouldn't touch them no matter how good a deal. Be careful when you go over your allowance as well otherwise you'll be harvesting a kidney!!!! Only good thing going was the actual coverage as it appeared to be flawless with the kids able to stream films with no interruption while on long journeys.
mk-donald to robj73
9 Mar 15 #219
Two good things about this HUKD [without any optional extra] is they have no opportunity to grab any extra money:
- it's an upfront pre-paid card for a fixed term of 12 months with "no contract"
- the pre-paid 1GB/m data for 12 months is capped so there's no potential to "Overage" charges of any sort.
ie the most you can risk/lose is the £24.99 prepaid

Though If you're talking about another Knowhow-MBB contract or this one with the +£4.99/International option [where the usage cap is removed & hence 5p/15p per MB "Overage" can start racking up] it sounds like your experience should be alert to anyone opting to take that.

Thanks for that - my reply was getting way too complex/theoretical - and vanished into a moderation queue for a bit - and I've now deleted it to avoid confusion.

What I did find which I thought interesting, as it confirms your first hand experience...
http://www.hacktrix.com/install-whatsapp-without-sim-card
and some people were asking 'could I use this SIM' in my [single-SIM] Smartphone and rely on it to give me data based WhatsApp/messaging/etc - and seems like a goer.

I would just reiterate an issue re DualSIM if your existing "main SIM" is on 3/Three network - then do check your phone has two 3G capable sockets [many have one that is only 2G/GSM] as otherwise trying to use this Knowhow SIM in a 2G socket isn't going to work based on all past knowledge of 3/Three SIMs/network - though haven't spotted a specific alert/warning on PCW/Currys/Knowhow sites.

You don't even need to have a sim card inserted in your phone to register for Whatsapp. I bought a phone off a Gumtree'er that later got network blocked. Nevertheless, I still use it fully (aside from calls/text). & Whatsapp works perfectly over wifi.

So Whatsapp will have no problem working with a second data sim. The only time Whatsapp ever engages with your sim number is in initial registration. Thereafter, it is entirely internet based - and will work using this KnowHow data connection using your normal Whatsapp number.

No, definitely not. "This is a data only service. Traditional voice & SMS services are not supported."

That said - if you have access to a data based SMS service - ie via an App or website using your data connection you could use that as a substitute but as a SIM to rely on in 'Emergency' I don't think it's the right approach, not least as you need to consider 3/Three's network coverage & how recipient of SMS could/would get back to you.

[I think for an emergency phone & SIM - eg to put in car - people would tend to look on HUKD for a £5'ish Nokia/Alcatel/Samsung and an eBay 99p'ish EE/TMobile SIM with say £5 PAYG credit that they can just use once every 6 months to keep the SIM alive.]

Ah yes of course - I totally agree with you - you won't have a problem - you're a GiffGaff'er ie O2 network - so will have no issues with that GiffGaff SIM in a 2G socket (whether set by hardware or software), and with your Knowhow-MBB MVNO SIM giving you 1GB/m data in your 3G socket. (It's only people already with 3/Three that have to worry if DualSIM'ing.) [First hand experience here with GiffGaff and o2 SIMs working fine in 2G phones/sockets.]

I just checked and giffgaff sims work on 2G.

Mhhh well my plan is to use my giffgaff sim for voice and text (no data) and the knowhow one for 3g data only, so it shouldn't be a problem even if I can't use 3g on both sims at the same time.

Ah I think each of the Moto G Dual SIM slots are 3G capable, but not simultaneously - ie I believe either one socket OR the other socket can be put/toggled into 3G mode, leaving the other as 2G. ie that it's a bit more sophisticated than (eg mine) where the sockets are hard wired rather than 'software settable'.
That's my current understanding based on what I've read and that would be a problem with 2 x 3/Three network based SIMs. Totally stand to be corrected on that; I'm just as you say trying to get people to think about this as a possible issue/problem with Dual SIMming.

My SIM mobile number shows on package sticker & receipt is 07777777777 - so I suspect that is a 'token/nominal number' - either that or I got so lucky I must have a REALLY valuable "limited edition/personal number" now.
ie remembering that "This is a data only service. Traditional voice & SMS services are not supported."

Mine took about 4 hours to activate in an iPad, and so far so good on 4G although download speeds are 6mbps but more than sufficient. This is just perfect for the iPad on the few occasions I need data on the move..

You have a point

So, to make sure, I took my main SIM (giffgaff) from slot 1 and moved it to slot 2 to do some tests:

Connection icon shows H/H+ on sim 2 and speedtest gives a result of around 3 mb/s, so I can say that both slots of the Moto G 2014 are 3G  Thanks for making me think about it anyway.

I'll probably get my knowhow sim tomorrow.

8 Mar 15 #186
Is the Moto G 2014 Dual SIM able to take & use 2 x 3G SIMs ?
I see from the pictures that there's no physical distinction made between the two SIM slots, just #1 and #2 (and specs are always hard to find reliably).
I raise it as some older/cheaper Dual SIM phones - eg mine- have just one slot 3G/2G [ie WCDMA/GSM] and second slot 2G [GSM]only; and some people have raised they already have a 3/Three SIM (eg on 3p/2p/1p PAYG plan) that they want to keep, but to add this 1GB/m data @£2.08/m to it - but if one don't have 2 x 3G capable SIM sockets one's going to fail.)

Their official 'Coverage' section is (farcical) at:

but as we know it's a MVNO on "3 UK" network of 4G/3G your best bet is

and recognising that most MVNO's traffic is given somewhere less than <100% of native network traffic.

Well your two requirements are (1) for one that takes a 3G/4G SIM [size wise you get Standard/Micro/Nano in the box]; and (2) which is either locked to the 3/Three UK network or is unlocked.
If you look at my main summary that has a link to a HUKD for both a 4G MiFi and a 4G USB dongle, each at c£20

CommentThis deal is for a "One year's data upfront at 1GB/month" prepaid mobile phone SIM - ie just offers data over a mobile Phone SIM - ie over "cellular" mobile network.

So your iPad Mini would have to be the model that is "WiFi + Cellular" to be able to put this SIM into the iPad to provide it with data from the Internet over the cellular mobile phone network.

If you were lucky/rich enough to have a "+Cellular" model then Knowhow are explicit that "All Starter Packs come with a 3-in-1 SIM which includes a standard SIM, micro SIM and nano SIM. You can use your SIM in WiFi devices, USB dongles, smartphones and tablets including iPads to connect to the service."

That said your iPad with "WiFi only" can connect to a WiFi Access Point - and we talk about a WiFi AccessPoint that has a cellular mobile phone modem built into it as a "MiFi" ie that connects Mobile phone/data network to WiFi devices.
You can pick up a 4G MiFi - into which this prepaid SIM could be put to provide a year of 1GB/month - for as little as £20 - see my summary posting back at the start of this thread, or look on Carphone Warehouse for 19500755
(which comes with 15GB/month on contract, but just 30-day cancellable contract).

8 Mar 15 #165
From everything published on Website/ServiceDesciption/Packaging/T&C, this "one year's data upfront" SIM only works for the twelve months, there's "no contract" and no auto-renewal or rollover into anything else.

So in your 12th month after activation once you use up your 1GB/m capped data, or the month runs out, then the SIM has no more allowances on it and is a unusable SIM. That said one would expect them in the later months of your SIM to offer you the chance to "upgrade" to another monthly package, or buy another annual prepaid bundle (if they are still offering them) - or if it works out okay you could be watching out for another PCW/Curry's "sale" to grab another 12m bundle ready to activate when time's up .

It was originally available to buy online for home delivery when the HUKD began but heat soon led to selling out online. As per the website, which is the correct website for this HUKD:
"3-in-1 SIM - perfect for unlocked smartphones, tablets and WiFi devices"
https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual

Actual packet says "3-in-1" and specifically states "Standard/Micro/Nano" sizes so no problem.

And the website FAQ talks about using with a "personal hotspot" or "sharing your WiFi data with multiple devices" - so 'tethering' implicity supported, and no mention whatsoever of "tethering" being prohibited. [FAQs just alert you that many on one can be slow, no suggestion of throttling etc.]

PS: Tethering explicitly SUPPORTED - see later screen shots etc.

Did a bit of Googling and sorry to be bearer of bad news but the Honor Holly SIM socket labels in eg this photo
http://i.ytimg.com/vi/4sK5TcgOKCk/maxresdefault.jpg
show SIM1 WCDMA/GSM and SIM2 GSM ie 3G/2G and 2G as I thought.
So fear your idea of 2 x 3/Three network based SIMs won't be successful but once your neighbour lets you get near it, you can do your own research with your 3/Three SIM as to how it works in the 2 SIM sockets - ie probably A OK in WCDMA and no service in GSM. Meanwhile we should get confirmation on here as to whether this HUKD SIM is actually as we believe a 3/Three based MVNO.

If you want 1gb a month in the UK It is a good deal but if you want more or to use it abroad then its not really a deal at all.

Reading in to this if you Have to pay £4.99 a month to use abroad then its only a few pence per month cheaper then 3s own £7.50 1GB rolling month contract.

Plus if its an extra £4.99 a month to double up to 2gb then its no cheaper then the 6gb/3 month EE sims £14.99 sims.

Well eg from direct personal experience. my Lenovo A820 has a 3G/2G slot and a 2G slot. so I have my data/voice/sms (contract) SIM in the 3G slot, and my PAYG (used only for incoming voice/SMS) SIM in the 2G slot. Fortunately neither is based on 3/Three, so my old o2 SIM works fine on 2G. Unfortunately Huawei/Honor website is scant on tech spec, but do THINK you'll find the Holly is a 3G/2G + 2G socketed phone.

No reason why it wouldn't work, and they explicitly support it per FAQ: "You can use your SIM in WiFi devices, USB dongles, smartphones and tablets including iPads to connect to the service." It would need to be a 3G/4G dongle though, not a very old 2G only one.

Realise the SIM only provides data : per packaging "This is a data only service. Traditional voice & SMS services are not supported." so don't expect any SMS through the dongle.

No it's 1GB/m capped once activated. Upgraded TO 2GB/m (ie "double data") still capped if you elect to pay £4.99/m ongoing. [by capped I mean you can't exceed the data and hence can't be charged for any "Overage" as they term it.]

See their summary of the offer spelt out in “Service Description” a 4 page PDF which you will find in the footer of their website pages – it’s the last item – click that and then the “Annual SIM Starter Pack Service Description”
here's a direct PDF link if you trust me:
https://assets.globalgig.com/globalgig-uk/docs/Annual-Plan-SIM-Starter-Pack-Service-Description.pdf

Nicely done btw! If you can hover over the "Details" bit of the pre-paid 1GB/m offering it would be interesting to see what they offer there (as I don't want to activate mine yet - still got too many Sainsburys freebie £15 bundles to use up).

PS: You can per the site decide at any time during the 12m to upgrade to "double data" ie 2GB/m for £4.99/m ongoing, ie don't have to decide at activation and "All upgrade plan options are rolling month-to-month contracts. There are no fees to cancel your service." so you can opt out again a month later.

Right idea but unfortunately don't think that combo will work as many (cheaper) Dual-SIM phones have one 3G/4G and other only 2G and from what I can see with Holly it's a 3G+2G - and you'd need 2 x 3G sockets for 2 x Three UK Network based SIMs.

Correct. Indeed requires to be in a 3G or 4G SIM socket as based on a MVNO on Three UK network. Default this Knowhow SIM to providing your data (1GB/m capped once activated out of the box for 12m, unless you pay £4.99/m to up to 2GB/m capped.) and other SIM to providing your voice/SMS.
This SIM packaging: "This is a data only service. Traditional voice & SMS services are not supported"
PS: But watch out if 2nd SIM were also a 3/Three SIM as it too will want a 3G connection even though you'd be aiming to only voice/SMS with it!

Correct. You just pay up front the £24.99 current special offer price and get your 12 allowances on the SIM.
You are required to provide a valid debit/credit card at time of Activation online for "validation" but "this card will not be charged".
ie It's a prepaid card with "no contract or credit checks" and with capped 1GB/m use for the 12m - ie no "Overage" charges as you can't exceed the 1GB allowance. The SIM comes in a sealed pack with no stated deadline for when it must be activated by, ie to start your 12 monthly allowances.

mk-donald to SamSamoon96
8 Mar 15 3 #115
Should be no reason for it not to work. At the very least this offer is a 3G SIM, quite probably 4G too. The Osprey is 4G so once unlocked any network [and we believe this is MVNO on Three] 3G/4G SIM should work. The only issue then would be how good Three network coverage you have where you plan to use it.

Meanwhile it's Sunday morning shop opening time & I'm off to collect one as having contributed so much here to trying to work out what the flip PCW/Currys are really selling I'm going to look first hand (and probably pick one up)... so will report in about an hour's time.

8 Mar 15 #114
I think you're picking up on PrePayMania misrepresenting the SIM in the small(er) print as lasting 30 days.

The headline figure is data is valid for upto 90 days, and other people selling prima facie the same 6GB/90day SIM, all say the 6GB data allowance is valid for up to 90 days from activation.
eg Argos where it's currently at their 'full' £30 price rather than occasional half-price
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1094352.htm

What would be interesting is to know how long the 'shelf life' of these SIMs is - ie when do they HAVE to be activated by to start the 6GB/90day countdown ?

Looks like a good deal, 1gb of data per month works out at just over £2 pm which compares well with other data plans which are well over £5 per month (i.e. Giffgaff)

Thanks & Heat ... ordered one for my Mi-fi in my holiday home for basic browsing. 1GB is more than ample for my normal browsing and email.

I was using the Three 1Gb 30 Day Sims when they were discounted to £2.99 at Curry's/PCW but my stock is running low. You can still get the Micro ones for £3.99 Three 1GB Sim . The Standard/Nano ones are back up to £7.99

Samba was my previous preferred choice before they went down the toilet as it was only £2.50 (with referral) and free thereafter (from "watching" ads) and with no expiry date.

I think, like many less technically proficient people reading this, I'm a bit confused...
However, I would like to be able to use my tablet/laptop abroad, without expensive roaming charges.
Also, I see that certain countries (like Spain and USA) are listed in the CORE countries.
Does that mean I can get 1GB per month while in Spain, without extra charges. If that is the case, then this is brilliant for me and a superb deal. If not, then I can see its use for low data usage in the uk, but that's not mainstream...

eg why wouldn't Currys mention it's really 4G, why under market it as just 3G; why waffle on about 10GB data add-ons when only +1GB is documented etc etc etc - ie why mis-sell it (so badly).

Anyway for £24.99 less 1% cashback with tethering permitted (if it is what we think) I've reserved one at a local evil

7 Mar 15 1 #83
Thanks and the really sad thing is that the customer SHOULDN'T have to do the research. They should be presenting this item in a really customer friendly/enticing/explanatory way as it seems (rightly) there's quite a potential market for this product, if it is what we think it is - and if explained clearly and consistently it should sell itself - but it's clear a leopard doesn't change its spots - we're still talking about Dixons + DSG + PCWorld + Currys + Knowhow (+ Carphone Warehouse)!

You'd have to feel sorry for Voiamo (if it really is they) in dealing with them all the time - but it isn't as if their Knowhow-mbb website isn't a bit of a mess too and with (apparent) typos & errors too

Just had a late-night brainwave - assuming this is for a Knowhow-mbb based service, maybe these are reduced to £24.99 because they genuinely are "3G" (as per confused PCW listing) ie older SIMs before they raised the service to 4G, and they are just clearing out older SIM stock this way rather than recalling them to put a new SIM in the packs ? (And that maybe there was an older 3G annual service that no longer appears on the knowhow-mbb website with the upto 10MB/m £7.99 option too.)

In terms of Reserve & Collect this isn't a .97p item (ie clearance) and earlier today was showing as available at every local'ish store for me and for 1+ other(s). Now showing at 75%+ of stores in 3 areas I've looked, so shouldn't be a needle in a haystack type item.

mk-donald to PrinceA

Yes but ONLY for data, it's a data dedicated SIM, ie no voice telephony and no SMS.
Hence only really useful in a Dual SIM Smartphone where you can rely on another SIM for voice/SMS while this gives you a cheap 1GB of 4G/3G data per month for a year [assuming it is the Annual SIM plan we think it is], certainly 3G data.

Yikes that Moto G Dual on Lollipop seems unfriendly to your potential usage.
If as we believe the PCW Knowhow SIM is based on Globalgig/Voiamo's MVNO on the Three UK network then it's SIM will require a 4G/3G circuit.
Personally I'm used to a China market Lenovo A820 on Android 4.x with one 3G/2G SIM socket and one 2G SIM socket. Then the firmware lets you choose which SIM to default to for data (with potential to default or choose either SIM for dialing and/or SMS).

Realise that PCW either deliberately or negligently confuse & cloud the offer by showing very clearly "Pay plan: 1 month rolling contract" so anyone quickly perusing the PCW page could well come away thinking £24.99 on a 1 month rolling contract. As I've mentioned above the PCW listing doesn't 100% stack up, with various inconsistencies on that page which only a first hand experience of SIM and interaction with Knowhow website/subscription will reveal.
Alphy31
7 Mar 15 1 #68

spannerzone to Alphy31
7 Mar 15 1 #71
Hmmm I suspect this is far less risky than PC World laptop insurance..... this seems like a fairly simple transaction whereas it's generally common knowledge that you'll have more luck getting President Mugabe repairing your under warranty laptop than PC Whirled.
mk-donald to Alphy31
7 Mar 15 #72
It's a pre-paid card valid for 12 months with no contract so only amount you can be robbed of is the £24.99 paid for the SIM card.

I'd agree that it's pathetic/typical that the PC World website details which do specifically/crucially state
- Includes 1 GB of data per month for one year
- This handy starter pack includes a Knowhow Mobile SIM card and 1 GB of data per month for a year.
but then goes on to say
- 1 month rolling contract
and is not cross-linked to a Knowhow Mobile site/service statement, and does not 100% tally with the Knowhow Mobile website details at
https://www.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/index#

where there is just one 1GB/m for a year plan which I & others have assumed this PCW offer is really for:
- however that is 4G/3G not just 3G per PCW
- is capped at 1GB/month usage so no 'Overage' for excess data use [a core customer benefit] - not mentioned on PCW
- does NOT have various "data options up to 10 GB per month " eg "Additional data available from £7.99 per month" as PCW, but only a £4.99/m option to increase to 2GB/m capped with no 'Overage'
- and the PCW description of International usage misses the crucial £4.99/m aspect and doesn't affect the amount of data at all, just the potential for 'Overage' charges both in UK & overseas.

So it'll be good/interesting to see when the first person who probably collects a pack from a PCW this evening/Sunday churps up with their first hand real experience as this deal has got so hot today - and some HUKDer's £24.99 must pass into PCW's grubby hands soon...

Sorry I don't mean from a technical point of view, I mean from a "terms and conditions" point of view.
I have a moto g dual sim, and you are right that only only 1 sim can be 3g at a time (it doesn't matter what slot it is in though) however when using 3 network, if I enable the data on the O2 sim, the 3 sim doesn't work at all, because the O2 sim is using the 3g and 3 doesn't have a 2g network. Not a major problem but to make a call on the 3 sim I need to disable data. Not sure if this is just a feature of Lollipop as the 2g/3g options seem to have changed!

Most dual SIM phones have one slot for 3G/2G and one slot for 2G-only. As long as you put this SIM in the 3G slot you should be fine. But some dual SIM phones don't support 3G at all. Basically, one needs to check.

Can this be tethered?
mk-donald to kalico
7 Mar 15 #51
There is no mention at all of "tether" in their T&Cs or FAQs - ie no exclusion.

Their FAQs begins with:
"1. How do I know which SIM to purchase for my device?
"All Starter Packs come with a 3-in-1 SIM which includes a standard SIM, micro SIM and nano SIM. You can use your SIM in WiFi devices, USB dongles, smartphones and tablets including iPads to connect to the service."
so the mention of WiFi devices and USB dongles would imply shared use.

but it gets better - ie explicit support for sharing...

"10. My device connects to the internet but the data connection is slow.
...
"Please ensure that you are not currently sharing your internet connection using your personal hotspot. "

"16. Does sharing my WiFi data using a hotspot affect the speed of my mobile broadband connection?
"The speed and quality of your connection may be reduced when sharing your WiFi data with multiple devices. This is particularly likely to be the case if two or more devices are using large amounts of data when for instance streaming videos. "

and the way these FAQs are worded do not suggest throttling just idea of many users of one link = lesser performance.

Press Release from last month "Dixons Carphone confirms MVNO with Three"
http://www.dixonscarphonegroup.com/media-centre/press-releases/dixons-carphone-confirms-mvno-three
Could well relate to this deal, where "Globalgig" (a trading name of "Voiamo Limited") provide the services for this PCWorld sold "Knowhow-MB" SIM where Knowhow "the new face of technology service and support" for Currys & PCWorld.

Voiamo themselves seem to have some pedigree in the mobile data marketplace around the world.
http://voiamo.com/press-coverage/

where 1GB/data is £4.94/m but with 100MB of overseas data.
DennisG
7 Mar 15 2 #38
I've done a bit of digging.
Initially thought it was a PC World/Dixons Carphone branded MVNO (mobile operator that piggybacks off another network a la Virgin). Everyone's jumping on one bandwagon or another just like they did with ISPs circa 1998.
It turns out that PC World have just whored out their uninspiring 'Knowhow' brand to Voiamo http://voiamo.com but have been doing so since at least last July http://www.cityam.com/1405920655/voiamo-seeking-raise-10m-bid-speed-european-rollout

It troubles me that there are no reviews except for the one upset review on the product page (due to issues in spain), because having been going for this long, I would've expected it to have made a ripple in internet-sphere.

I just get the feeling that the 12 months isn't guaranteed. It could ovivo its way into oblivion before they year is up - who knows?

The website seems overly confusing and full of a lot of mistakes. I'm really unsure since it seems to say slightly different things on different parts of the website.
Coreydeals
7 Mar 15 #27
What a complicated structure. Surely at that rate it would be easier to stick with Three if you're not planning on going to any of the extra countries, and only the ones already part of Feel at Home.
wenttoabetterplace
7 Mar 15 #25
So it is £75 for a year of 1GB data when travelling abroad in a select few countries....and 100MB of data each month in the other countries. I guess this isn't such a good deal for me .
Still, it's a cracking deal for anyone that wants a data connection on their tablet etc.

So, this is basically the same as Fogg, but £24.99/year more expensive?

This would only be if you upgraded though. You aren't signing up to a contract if you just get the basic one as they don't have your details
mike_6480
7 Mar 15 3 #21
It actually looks like you have to upgrade and pay an extra £4.99 a month to be able to use abroad - see link below that has already been posted:

https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual#

states "Upgrade to the International monthly rolling plan to use your 1GB of data in 40 countries - £4.99 per month"
Coreydeals
7 Mar 15 1 #20
"We want to ensure that you are able to use your data locally and overseas without bill shock. To keep you in control of your data usage we provide the following spend management controls.

Email notifications when you have used 50%, 85% and 100% of your planís data allocation.
Spend Alerts for every £/€10 spent.
For your convenience overage is capped at £/€50, you can change this cap by contacting Customer Service. Admin charges may apply.
Please note: spend management notifications are a best efforts service. Occasionally notifications may be late due to delays in receiving data records from overseas network partners."

Aaah...I see now. The direct link was taking me to a different product page (£29.99 and no free data).

So before I pull the trigger on this deal...
- Once the data limit is reached each month, am I right in thinking the sim card will stop working. I.e, there will be no extra roaming fees etc? (I'm off cycle touring around N.Europe/Scandinavia and looking to use this as a cheap data connection but don't want to run into any additional costs!)

Am I missing something here...
I can only see a £7.99 a month rolling contract option? Where is the 12 months for £24.99 deal?
mk-donald to wenttoabetterplace
7 Mar 15 3 #14
Don't get distracted into that option - the main linked listing at £24.99 is for "•Includes 1 GB of data per month for one year" and per the text on the left "This handy starter pack includes a Knowhow Mobile SIM card and 1 GB of data per month for a year."

It appears this is the website to get more information at
https://annual.knowhow-mbb.com/uk/en/annual#

That talks about Upgrade to the International monthly rolling plan to use your 1GB of data in 40 countries - £4.99 per month and that upgrade cost runs for the rest of your starter pack's 1 year term!
It also allows 1GB/m to become 2GB/m for the rest of the 1year term also at £4.99/m

If you really want to use data abroad for a period of time I would checkout Three PAYG All-in-one £15 option for a phone SIM which gives you 25GB in their "Feel At Home" countries for 30 days (without tethering).
Coreydeals to wenttoabetterplace
7 Mar 15 1 #15
"Includes 1 GB of data per month for one year" you just pay from £7.99 for more data.

can use in Germany which is not on 3 list. Strange...
trogggy to toilettroll
7 Mar 15 #10
Germany is on the 'bonus data' list. It looks to me as though you only have 100MB/month in the countries on that list. Hopefully I've read it wrong...
jsoap
7 Mar 15 1 #9
It looks like you won't get the international roaming unless you sign up to to one of the data plans, detailed here
"Upgrading allows you to use your data abroad without incurring roaming charges, which is great for using on holiday or staying in touch with loved ones if you travel a lot."

So the min charge is £7.99 per month for 1gb - for the core countries - UK, Republic of Ireland, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.
For the remaining 28 countries you can only use the "bonus data", which is 10% of the allowance - ie 100mb for your £7.99 per month, which is pretty much useless.

update: As is now clear this is the "annual" package and not the old £7.99 monthly package
