ASDA told me their varifocal (progressive) lenses were made by Shamir (HQ in Cambridge). I emailed Shamir to ask how the lenses they supply ASDA compare with their advertised lenses which they provide to independent opticians. Shamir said the ASDA lenses were specific to ASDA and refused to provide any information on how they compared. I conclude that any manufacturer declining to provide such a comparison is merely hiding the fact that they are inferior. Hence, I conclude that Shamir supply ASDA with lenses inferior to their advertised lenses. If I am wrong, Shamir are at liberty to post detailed technical specifications to prove it.

I got Essilor Comfort varifocal lenses put into my own frames for £140 at Asda.

I just been got single lenses and frame for £1.20 with my NHS optical voucher. Bonus there was more tame to chose from in the £40 range then NHS.

I got a pair of varifocals a year ago from asda but could only see through the very bottom of the lens meaning I had to put my head in the air and look down to read so pretty useless.

if ur looking for a sub standard quality lens then 40 quid is perfect for u. But im a qualified optician and I can tell u so many people come to me and complain about these cheap lenses. Remember you get what you paid for!

They are cheap for a reason, if you're going to get varifocals make sure you get a branded lens like Essilor or Zeiss, they are more expensive but the design is superior to any store brand.

I got my Zeiss vari's at Costco, bargain compared to high street, when I went into Specsavers they thought I was quoted wrong because the price was so good!

Seiko make excellent lenses and the quality of there varifocals and anti reflective coatings are second to none

If your looking for the best quality .. Then look at Nikon lenses .

The Costco deal is exceptional for Essilor lenses, with genuine Essilor coatings. I shopped around extensively and couldn't beat Costco's pricing.

Great deal......however I bought these varifocals last year and they are the worst ever. The lenses are so basic that the "viewing" area in the reading section of the varifocal is minute. I actually took them back at first because I thought the wrong prescription was in them. The assistant told me that they are very basic. I have since opted for varifocals online from the likes of select specs and goggles4u with no problems and that is me opting for their 2nd best varifocals which actually worked out around £65 with a massive choice of frames to choose from, oh and that includes anti reflection coating and anti scratch coatings.

Second the comment about the lenses being parp unless they've changed them. Enough to put you off varificals for life with such a narrow usable in focus zone. It's like looking through a slit.

I ended up paying substantially more for essilor comfort lenses on the advice of the Asda optician after returning three times for adjustment/checking. Difference is night and day in terms of viewing width. I could not fault asda for customer service or the performance of the optician though. But cheap varifocals may lead to disappointment.

I used ASDA Opticians in Queensferry for my last glasses. Have to say very good service and pricing. Far better than some other well known opticians I have used in the past. Took about 3 weeks for the glasses to arrive (suspect they came from China), but superb quality with NO SCRATCHES - something I normally end fighting other opticians over. Will definitely use again.

Get a free eye test at tesco, get your prescription information then measure the distance between your pupils and the distance between each pupil and the centre of the bridge of your nose. Once you have done that order some glasses from zennioptical or one of the many other low cost online retailers. Glasses are dirt cheap online.

I always get mine from asda because i get staff discount you cant really beat them i got a pair of Nike glasses with every option including transitions for £88 winner. (This was a few months ago though)

the £40 glasses all look good.They have geek style and sprung hinges.
Also saw new ranges at £100 or 2 for £159 with varifocal lenses.I liked the savorski and the 7 for all mankind.

The eye test I had at Asda was as thorough as any other optician I had been to. Some of the cheaper High St optician chains gave me a much less thorough test in the past. I'll be ordering some glasses from Asda this week. Thanks for posting. Heat added.

I found frames I liked straight away. The lady said varifocals were now the same price as the single vision. Coated and thinned, all in. The website price had not been update when I looked last night but the store had sign for £40 non designer & designer £70-90. 2 for £99 Complete. Eye test is £15. Heat
