Hi

From 1st April 2015 Three will be including Spain in its Feel At Home package meaning you can use your data/calls/text allowances in Spain - handy for many of us and just in time for Summer.

This also includes the Canary Islands.

As people on this thread have previously mentioned, the speed is usually good enough for browsing and not normally good enough for streaming

Hi there, I've used it in California twice now and found the speeds to be slow - sorry no exact speeds. It was fine (and extremely helpful) for Google Maps and checking in on Facebook but I would imagine you'd struggle streaming media or uploading large files in good time.

I was just in HK and it worked fine. Given that one can only use this in a phone (no tethering) and most people are likely to have a relatively limited allowance, I am just wondering why people are so hung up on speed. Surely 2Mb is good enough for phone browsing ?,
japcars
27 Nov 16 #482
on a similar Note I think they limit to the speed while you are abroad. I just came back from hk and had been on "3 " hk. my speed is never above 2mb and in most cases I just less than 1.
HK actually has a very good 4G speed and o was comparing with my friend who has a local 3 sim, he is getting over 10mb on download.
so pretty crap for me.

hi, I'm considering changing from EE to 3 mainly for the free abroad mobile data, however only concern is the speed. I heard it is 3g only not 4g for roaming and even within uk speed is slower than ee. for those using it, what are your experiences?

Yes it does work on path sims but it might be the case that the sim needs to be active for 30 days before your trip.
But, I am not sure if that applies only to contract sims, rather than path offering.

This is definitely not strictly enforced. My daughter was in a 3Athome country for 4 months and had no problems. However, she did come back home every 4 - 6 weeks, so was able to intersperse a little UK use into the overseas use. I am not sure what happens if you try and use for a longer period without the odd UK connection.

At one point in France you had to use Orange. Seems that's no longer the case and it will select automatically. So far I've used this in France, Italy, Spain including Canary Islands, and Ireland,

I don't know if it's been mentioned but it's not automatically switched on, you have to go to your "my three" account (non mobile version i think)and activate it before you travel. You only have to do this once not every time. I had the issue not working in new York only way I could get it to work was to contact three via twitter to get them to activate as it needs to send you a text which if you cannot connect to the network you won't get a text! Any way the customer care was really helpful and stated that it's not usually activated and to activate simply visit three website and log into your account . Maybe that's why for some people it didn't work?

You can use whatever you have in your balance including the 150mb bonus data. for short trips I tend to top up 5 just to get the bonus data and all I use is the bonus data. Just have to be careful not to go through the 150 else it will eat into your cash balance really quick.

on longer trips I use the cash balance already in my account from these small top ups to buy the add on.

Anyone know if these Sims can be purchased at Heathrow airport? I'll be flying in from Australia with my family in April, and these seem ideal for our 2 months in Europe. We have a stop over at Heathrow before flying to Barcelona. 3 Sep 15 #423
Can anyone conform whether this works with the basic 500mb data package, rather than a more expensive data + voice package ?

I am assuming that the Feelathome does not work with data only SIMS (is that correct ?) so what I am talking here is buying a 500mb data package for a voice and data SIM, not a pure data only SIM.

I'd read that data only sims work in a feel at home location without any add on required - the primary function is data and so that feature works as is.

If you have a PAYG sim you can add a package any time there is credit in the account, however long the sim has been active and wherever you are (certainly if you add via the internet or the Three app). Also bear in mind that incoming calls are fee whether or not you have an active package.

Thanks for this. Three's 'Feel at Home' offer really helped when we went to France several weeks ago. Plus, they send you a text when you arrive back in the U.K. to notify you how much you would have spent!

8 May 15 #414
i went to australia for 3 weeks and used a three PAYG sim.
Topped up £15 on my account and got something like 150mb data credit for free (i.e. my £15 was untouched).
I was able to use the 150mb as 'feel at home allowance'. when i almost used up the 150mb, i used the £15 credit on my account to buy the all in one add on: giving me All-you-can-eat data, 300 minutes, 3000 texts.

over the 3 weeks we used more than 7Gb of data going by the app counter! no probs whatsoever!
all that for £15. hassle free.
paulfoel
17 Apr 15 #413
But last year paid £15 for the top-up inc calls and data and it worked quite well in the USA.
Occasionally, you'd get problems saying you had no credit but if you switch manually to another network it worked.
paulfoel
17 Apr 15 #412
Beware of this. If you're on PAYG use your credit to buy a bunde/top up with inclusive calls/texts/mb or whatever you need. This will then be included.

If you don't the call/text/internet charges are NOT the same as in the UK. I got stung with this one.
Its something like 18p minute not 1p, and 10p for 1Mb instead of 1p. Makes a difference.

Ended up costing me. First £10 went in a day.

I got an answer from practical experience ! Any included items will be available e.g. the 5000 (?) free 3 to 3 mins that you get when first topping up, and the 150Mb data givien each time there is a top up + free incoming calls (for which I don't think even any credit is required, although I have not tested it out with no credit)
FF99
1 Mar 15 #406
I have a question about this which I have not got to the bottom of. I understand that for PAYG one has to have a relevant add-on, but what I am not clear about is whether this has to be one of the £10 or £15 monthly packages.

Can (for example) the 5,000 free 3 to 3 minutes and 500 (?) texts which one is given when one first signs up on PAYG, or the 150Mb of data that one gets each time one tops up, be used ?

Does anyone know definitely what the answer is ?

Get the SIM card, top up £10 or £15, this would remain as credit with no expiry if you do nothing else but it won't work as a feel at home SIM. So, you convert your freshly topped up £10 or £15 credit into an 'add on' which means you've converted the credit into an add on. An Add On lasts 30 days and now works as a feel at home SIM so calls, texts and data now come out of your add on allowance whether in the UK or in a feel at home country.. After 30 days the add on expires and you have no credit unless you top up again, and convert to an add on if required.

Just ordered 5 Sims in preparation for Holiday to Spain in August. Not decided if we port our numbers over or just use the Sims own numbers.
Will be interesting to see how 3 are indoors after I left them 3 years ago. In UK 4G is in our area and looking forward to seeing their speeds compared to gfifgaff 4g
preecey to dlozuk
27 Jan 15 #392
Giffgaff/O2 are massively behind in the UK in terms of 3G/4G data coverage and speeds. I am currently an EE, Three and an O2 customer and the data speeds and 4G availability from EE/Three far surpass anything I get from O2. In fact, in many areas I have found where O2 still only offers 2G, EE and Three offer a 4G service.
It just shows how little O2/Giffgaff have invested in their network over the years.
I do hope that, with the recent news regarding a possible takeover of O2 by Hutchison Whampoa (Three), that when and if this takeover goes ahead that existing O2 customers will be able to use Three/MBNL masts and vice versa.

Santa001
23 Jan 15 #383
They can't be charged by their phone company because they are dialling an UK number. Even if you are aboard without (Feel-At-Home) and your friends calls you it has to be you who is charged the roaming charges, not them as they are, again, dialling an UK number. Any mobile provider simply can't charge them because they don't have to know where you are right now. Hope that helps.
Schmutz
16 Jan 15 #382

Say I am in the USA.

My friend sends me a text message.

I have a three contract - feel at home - so I receive the text message / nothing deducted from my allowance.

What does my friend pay to send the message?

Likewise, with calls. Do they pay like they are calling the USA, or does it come out of their allowance like they are calling someone in the UK?

Is this in writing anywhere? I assume they pay like they are contacting someone in the UK...? It has been difficult to get a definitive answer for this.

This is seriously awesome news. The Spanish are so backwards, lazy and peasantile try buying a payg data sim in Spain if you are not Spanish non resident. My Nephew is going to the USA and is on o2.

Am I right in thinking that family members in the UK on Three can phone him Free,
but for him to phone us Free we would have to get him a Three Contract or PAYG Sim before he goes?

Thanks.
yacoboy to Dopple
9 Jan 15 #338
Correct, sir!
preecey to Dopple
11 Jan 15 #360
Hi, unfortunately that is not entirely correct:

It will be free (N.B. when I say 'free' here, I mean that these calls will come out of any inclusive minutes you may have) for any family member on any UK network to phone his UK mobile, regardless of what network he is also on, while he is in the US. BUT, he will have to pay to RECEIVE the call (probably around 90p per minute) if he is NOT on Three.

If your nephew is on Three it will be totally free to receive these calls as well as make them back to the UK (and of course send texts and use data as part of his UK tariff).

To recap, free to call his UK mobile in the US from any UK mobile network, but he will have to pay to receive except if he joins Three. When on Three he can call back to the UK and receive calls from the UK as part of his regular UK tariff.

Hope this clarifies it a bit.

11 Jan 15 #359
Thank you Sir!

So just to clarify: Free for Three in UK to phone him in U.S regardless of his Network out there,
but he would need to take a Three Sim for it to be free for him to phone UK?

Thanks.

As I say on these feel at home threads every time. Set up an account at http://www.18185.co.uk or http://www.1899.com & link your mobile number to it. You then dial the uk access number using your inclusive minutes & dial through to the local number at their very cheap discount rates. Or use VOIP via the data allownace.

Out of interest, what happens if you call a local number? eg a Spanish number whilst in Spain. Are you charged international rate or does it come out of your allowance?
hanif248 to normal
10 Jan 15 #343
You get charged standard international rates, because it counts as an international call.

The calls are only free when calling back to the UK only (because it treats it as a UK to UK type call).

With Feel At Home you are charged exactly as you would be at home here in the UK so if you call a country other than a UK number you will be charged international rates just as though you were at home. e.g. Calling a Spanish number whilst in Spain would cost 46p per minute

with feel at home, what happens when people from UK call you? Does it come out of your minutes?

I found this

"It's always free to receive calls and texts in a Feel At Home destination. Don't forget that when you're calling or texting back to the UK, you'll need to replace the first 0 in the number you're calling or texting with +44."

Can anyone confirm that calls received were not taken out of their minutes? And what does the caller pay? Does it work like a normal call to a UK phone?

But if you are playing the retentions game then you have got to expect the being passed around and interminable conversations, as that is par for the course. Every time I have argued and successfully got my half price Sky deal I have been on the phone for over an hour every time, whilst some Scot talks to me about football and the referendum whilst trying to convince me that he can only give me 20% off.

don't think that's right: you dial 07*** number from US or any other "feel at home" country and it won't connect (unless you have some kind of international "assisted dialling" setting which transforms any number you type into +44).
You really need that "44" code (preceded by 00 in most of world, 011 in US, or just put "+" and you can't go wrong).

I used the Three PAYG SIM with Add-on last year in US (Orlando, Vegas and San Francisco) last year as Vodamoan wanted £5 per day plus charging if going over the data limit. Worked perfectly while there and have used here too as Vodafone in Norwich area is appalling. I cant believe three are the only network with this. So useful. But when I was in Paris last July it never worked... it didnt find anything, it might be because I put a spending cap on my account (i.e. blocked trying to call 0800 numbers etc, blocks trying to connect to data abroad) but a three representative said this wouldnt affect anything, and instead said maybe it wasnt available in France back in July 2014.

Thing is, it was... so nothing really makes sense. Im going to California in March/April and I hope to god it works there for me... I have a new contract now, the £15 pm 200min/AYCE/AYCE/4GB Hotspot. Hopefully it'll be different.

Has anyone used this in the USA? what kind of speeds do you get average/worst/best, and can you use your 4GB Hotspot?

I used this during my study abroad in the US (North Carolina). Had great reception and data connection. I used it for tethering on a few occasions and it worked like a charm. Unfortunately after around the third month I could never connect to the internet (or the connection was very patchy at best). Phone calls works still worked though.

Cannot tell you how convenient it was. Besides the minor hiccup with data, it was absolutely amazing that I could use my phone to call home as if I was still in the UK. Also saved me the incredibly expensive US mobile tariffs :stuck_out_tongue:

You're restricted to 3G and you can't use tethering; can always work around it by using a VPN, but the speeds won't be ideal. Depending on the location you're going to, you might want to manually choose which network you roam onto; at&t and t-mobile vary wildly in their coverage.

It wouldn't work for your mum then as this is one of the stipulations:

Feel At Home is intended for our UK customers who are visiting one of the destinations for short trips, like holidays or business trips. If you only use your plan in a Feel At Home destination for a complete month, and this happens three times within a year, we may have to suspend international roaming on your account, which would mean you wouldn’t be able to use your phone or device abroad anymore. We’d let you know if this were likely to happen. If you spend a full month abroad but some of that time is spent in a destination that isn’t included in Feel At Home, the restriction won’t apply.

I used this in the States recently, and it was excellent. However it still cost me - calling any US number while I was there was expensive. I actually didn't need to call anyone in the UK (I used Facetime over wifi), but even just calling a cab, a restaurant or the airport was expensive. However, it was much cheaper per minute than O2.

However it is completely different in Europe - I found it worked out cheaper to use my O2 sim as data costs £2 a day for an unlimited amount (and was very fast BTW, especially!) but calls within any part of Europe were cheaper, at only 50p for up to an hour. With Three, calls within Europe cost a whopping 18p per minute. So you can call home for free, yeah, but you can't call locally.

So, it depends on how you use your phone. For the USA Three wins for data and local call charges. However for Europe, if you want to call within Europe, it is cheaper to use O2 - data will cost £2 a day and is unlimited (and fast) but calls are much, much cheaper than Three.

Prob 99/100 know this, but for those that don't: calls and texts back to the UK, and internet (max 25GB) come out of your 3 plan - other calls, e.g. local, do not, are paid for separately (though at better rate). Phoning someone else on 3 in same or other feel at home country also comes out of package.

Phone kept switching between AT&T and T-Mobile, worked but although some times quick most often fairly slow, often felt like I had to refresh/reload. Initially thought it might be prob while on T-Mobile, but when started keeping an eye on it found was a prob also on AT&T. Was still very useful, but high expectations of 3G speed left e little disappointed. Did you clearly see that AT&T were better than T-Mobile?

Just a quick question for those on PAYG;

Is it possible to queue add-ons? I just tried to and my one expires tomorrow, but it just kept on refreshing the page. o_O My balance was the same - but ended up saying that I didn't have enough credit available.. I had £15 and was trying to buy the £15 add-on. Is this normal?

I'm going to Three (321) in 2 weeks time, fed up with contracts and minutes I don't use, Will be handy having calls abroad and if I loose the phone no big worry of a £1000+ bill.

Nice one Three!

6 Jan 15 #221
A few things....my main contract is on EE as I get all my call and texts to the UK and to any non UK number included in the plan all included. I can ring/text my family in Portugal whilst I am in France for example and it won't cost me a penny. I have to pay £2 for 100mb of data but I get 4G if available whereas 3 only have 3G deals at the moment.

Like I said earlier, the Internet I have found to be extremely slow in France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. It will not stream video or Skype very well. even Facebook takes ages to load, so surely the deal EE have, where you get call and texts included in virtually all of Europe is fairly good.

I got a mifi device on 3 due to my job working around Europe and I can honestly say the signal is more consistent on my phone (EE) and in my opinion it's worth just paying the £2 a day if I want data. otherwise I just connect to wifi.

Also, when I got the contract on 3 in December, I was told the 30 day thing isn't applicable any more and it seemed to be right as I used it in France 3 days later without a problem. I was also informed that you can only be out the country for 30 days at a time before it disconnects until you come back to the UK. Hope this helps someone.

I have researched into this for a long time as my mobile phone bills were £300 plus a month. I am a continental coach driver and Internet helps me with Google maps etc especially in new places.
This is why I thought the 3 mifi device would be a godsend. I am only passing on information that I was told before I signed up although I do understand it wouldn't be the first time sales assistants have been wrong.

Having asked 3 why the speeds were so slow, I just got told it's because they only have 3G deals abroad. Even so, it should still be quicker than it is. ☺

They just need to fix their web site so new users can register and top up!

Seriously though, anyone getting a new 3 SIM should be aware that their web based registration and/or top up for new customers is going through a bad patch - like it doesn't work at present. Older customers seem to be OK.

Brilliant news! Makes me glad to be on Three.

A little warning for anyone taking their 3 phone abroad for the first time. I recently went to Italy and it didn't work at all initially, I'd read that roaming should be set up automatically if you're a contract customer, but it seems it wasn't for me. Unfortunately, the only way to activate it is to call up. and since my phone refused to pick up any network at all, I was a bit buggered. Thankfully I had a spare phone on a different network with me which I managed to use whilst in Italy to call their number and activate the roaming.

It'd be much better if they'd let you do it through their webpage (MY3), I I'd not had the spare phone, I'd have been a bit stuck.

I've got to say though, I think it's brilliant overall and was actually my main motivation for switching to Three. In Italy, I generally got fairly usable speeds, 2-4mbps down and 1-2 up.

Get a Sainsbury's Mobile sim and your family from here in UK can call you while you're there.
It shouldn't cost you to receive calls in Oman, Qatar or UAE.

See the Roaming Charges.
Receiving Calls, per minute cost is 0p.
Your family/friends will just be calling your UK mobile number issued by Sainsbury's.

Same applies to Saudia Arabia and Bahrain too (but not Yemen).
Looks like a deal with Middle East operators. Odly you still get charged fro receiving calls in most European countries.
Might have something to do with Qatari fund buying a stake in sainsbury's

Three are fab - really ethical. One of my kids is on Three, the other with Talkmobile. On Three if they use up their data it sends a warning text then stops it until you buy a bolt on. With Talkmobile the first you know about it is a huge bill. Three are making some dramatic moves and I hope they are rewarded by gaining some new customers from other networks.

I have been with them for years. Best prices, unlimited data plans, 4G, and now this.

If you're a contract customer, I think you have to be at least 30 days into your contract before you can take advantage. Not sure if this also applies to PAYG.

Just back from a month-long holiday to Australia, and this was ideal. I think they cap you at 1GB a month, but I used about 750MB - mainly on maps, Yelp and Tripadvisor!

I used this in California in September and it was dreadful. Speeds were appalling - almost as if throttled. Have used feel at home first hand in New York in Jan last year, and can say it was fantastic!
I have all you can eat mins, texts and data.
Was so strange landing in Newark and turning ON data roaming, (all the data warnings from Samsung about roaming abroad were concerning) but I need'nt have worried.
From FB updates heading in the Taxi to NYC to weather updates, Google maps, being able to call home, Skype. all the things you take for granted in the UK, was excellent to have use of all this in a different country specially when historically you have either incurred huge bills or high costs for doing so!
You can also keep track of things using the MyThree app if your worried or concerned about getting charged.
Even had a 20 min call with a friend who called me when i was in New York (also on Three) and didn't cost a penny to receive the call.
Cannot recommend Three enough, i think the use of phone abroad is worth the contract price alone!

I wouldn't rely on this fully ... best to have a back up plan in vase yoi can't pick up signal. I purchased a three payg £15 p/m package Samsung gala y s4 mini to take to Miami and Orlando just before Christmas and could only pick up a signal for internet USD maybe 5% of the time :disappointed:

I hope it works when I go in May.

Lasy year I went to Ireland, which should have been covered, and which I had "setup" before going, when I got there it did not work, and guys in Dublin shop didnt know how to help so my phone line was useless over there. IIRC my nunber was temporaily blocked

When I got back Three UK apparently managed to sort out the issue for me, but i havent been to a relevant country since.

However I don't use the phone a great deal and I also like the cheap 321 plan.

Three uses the same 3G masts as EE here in the UK thanks to a network sharing scheme called MBNL.

They each have their own 4G networks though, and the signal with these is not shared between each other.

I used this in Vegas and California last year on my iPhone and iPad and it worked great. I didn't do any speed tests but used it to make video calls through facetime whilst walking up and down the Vegas strip with no problems.

Not only did I get 4G, but it was the first time I ever managed to get 4G on my iPad, as it is an iPad 3 which can't connect to the UK's 4G networks.

Great news.

However, as reitterated above if you have All You Can Eat Data you can "only" use 25GB in these "Feel At Home" countries. Plus no tethering via Hot Spot. Also, you can only use it on a commercial basis and if you use it more than three trips a year they may cap you. They will let you know this beforehand though.

Great service and one of the reasons why I recently joined 3.

Use your phone abroad at no extra cost.

Your device is already set up so you can use your allowance to call and text the UK and use your data abroad at no extra cost. Available in 16 destinations, with Spain and New Zealand coming in April.
With Feel At home you can use your allowances to call and text the UK and use your data and it won't cost you a penny more. You can enjoy Feel At Home whether you're on Pay Monthly or Pay As You Go, using a tablet, phone, mobile Wi-Fi or dongle.

*If you're on Pay As You Go, all you need to do is convert your credit into an Add-on. You can then use the allowance in any Feel At Home destination.

t'would be good to know for certain if the Canaries are or aren't included. Great deal though - just switched to Three a couple of months back after many years with T-Mobile and I'm very impressed with Three's innovative approach c/w other networks. Haven't used Feel at Home yet (however, will likely be in Mallorca and Gran Canaria later this year), but I'm finding Three InTouch invaluable - not aware that any other network has this capability for free either. Here's their terms and conditions. I do remember using tethering briefly while I was in the US last month, but I didn't test it properly due to having wifi in my hotel room. I just wouldn't count on it being available when needed due to their stated terms and conditions, but unless someone knows what system they're using for detection of tethering, it's hard to be sure
paul.jacobs
6 Jan 15 #34
[quote=Schmutz]Thanks for the responses re: feel at home in USA, it is reassuring.

Any idea why I couldn't get it to work in Paris last July (2014)? Possible contributing factors;

Samsung Galaxy SIII - 3G model
Three plan with 300min/AYCE/AYCE/no tethering (£26 a month, with the phone 24 month contract)
I put on a cap preventing any additional costs on top of £26

So, I'm not sure if that cap would have conflicted. I called Three this October to make some enquiries and they explained that the cap can be enabled and you can still use mobile data, and they went on to say "Feel at home was probably not available in France at that time" - which I'm quite sure is not true.

Therefore, I'm left pretty confused about all of this! Only explanation seems to be that the advisor I spoke with gave misinformation regarding the cap and Feel at home go live dates[/b]

When I phoned to activate international roaming, they removed the cap which I put back on when I returned to the UK.
