So you're paying for the brand. It was just a question, i was curious. I own apple products myself, some of their products are what i prefer over another, and cost around the same. But in this situation you can get just as good of a PC for much less money minus the brand name. So no, you're not paying for quality you're paying for a brand name. What a stupid thing to say.

You've clearly never used a macbook. People pay for quality in my opinion, your comment makes it sound like people who use Apple products are stupid for paying more for less spec. They could argue that your being a cheap stake by using a plastic covered laptop opposed to a metal cased one.

Thanks for the heads up OP. Been looking into this over the christmas period and am now ready to take the plunge and replace my 7 year old iMac with a new one.

Just to add my 2 pence worth to the mac/pc debate which accompanies all such posts (this will be my first and last time by the way!). Before buying my iMac in 2008, I had been on the 3 year PC replacement schedule treadmill since my first Viglen PC playing Doom in the mid 1990s!

My iMac cost a bit more than the equivalent PC in 2008 but has been a revelation compared to the PCs I have owned (Viglen, NEC, Mesh and self build) . It cost about £1600 which was about £300-£400 more than an 'equivalent' PC at the time. It's still working as well as the day I bought it but I now need some more beef for HD video editing. It has lasted twice as long as any of my previous PCs and is still selling for £350 on ebay. IMO that's great value.

Oh and I recently went cheep and bought my son a Lenovo laptop with windows 8 installed. I hoped things might have changed...but no...it's all constant updates, warning windows appearing everywhere and software installed that I had no idea I'd installed. I've had to reinstall from scratch twice in the last 18 months! I can see my old mac not making it to ebay

But that's just my experience...for what its worth.

yeah - it's now soldered so can only be done at time of purchase. £160 for the upgrade rather than £30 odd.
I have the standard 5400rpm HD too. Fusion was new then but not worth the upgrade. Only time I notice this compared to my SSDs is when copying several files to USB and watching video at the same time. Otherwise not an issue!

Has anyone had delivery, and if so, what courier?

mine's due today, supposedly from syncreon, however people say they're an intermediary and pass the final leg of delivery on to another courier
tracking info hasn't been updated since dispatch and i'm worried I'll miss delivery and it will be taken back to an exotic depot in the middle of nowhere.

I had delivery from UKMail yesterday for my order - was for an iPhone though, and they delivered to a neighbour.
DennisG
9 Dec 14 #437
think it counts as custom, however not custom enough that they have to go back to the drawing board.
you were right to go 16gb btw, I got 4gb in my 2012 model but in those days you could add your own ram so i got it for about £30 from crucial. 16gb i7 mac mini is a workhorse!! a great HTPC but also works a charm hooked up to 2 thunderbolt displays.

my product wasn't ready for dispatch at the time the finance was approved (iPhone which was at the time 3-4 weeks wait!), however I've had dispatch confirmation on the weekend with suggested delivery date of today, but very little info following on from that. most tracking services from most companies have a final stage (out for delivery), contact numbers (would ideally like to re-arrange for when someone is home) and are generally run by the guys who deliver, not by the guys who co-ordinate the logistics as an intermediary!
i'm delaying going out, but have to leave soon, and won't be back until the friday. if I can't get the new phone in my hand by the weekend and free up the old one, my private sale might fall through and i'll be stuck getting rid of it on risky, expensive eBay

Have only just come across this HDUK link.
I do not buy Apple products because..

1) The one £30 apple product I did buy back in 2009 (i-pod shuffle) which required me to download i-tunes completely destroyed the multi sound track libraries created by my video editing projects. Deleting i-tunes was to no effect as was a system restore. it took me over 3 months of an hour or so a day to get back where I was.

2) I object fundamentally on Apples closed source/hardware/OS policy

3) Apple hardware is not up to the the standard offered elsewhere. e.g. Many people think the description "Retina Display" is something special. It is purely a basic resolution standard that is far exceeded by displays on other equivalent size devices which also give higher contrasst and brightness.

This really depends entirely on what your job as an 'IT Pro' entails, though. For myself, working in IT for local government, there's categorically no way I could adequately get my job done using a Mac. However, as you say the best available tool is whatever works best for the situation. All this ridiculous bickering over PC vs. Mac is a waste of effort.

I don't see the appeal of buying a macbook for thousands when you can get same spec PC for much less. Are people paying for the brand or lack of knowledge AKA they think because it costs loads of money, it must be the best?

I think with Apple your paying for the system as opposed to the general hardware. Their os runs flawless. I am not a fanboy but I currently own an iPhone 4, I also have a PC gaming rig and gaming laptop. Sorry to say both windows machines have had some sort of hardware/software issues in their lifetime (something which would be unlikely on the mac)

Obviously, there's so many things that can go wrong with a PC, I mean there's so many different combination of components - but I do agree in terms of spec you can get a better spec PC for the money - but with that you may get conflicting hardware issues along the way.

In addition I think macs have the edge for graphics work etc? So depends what ppl want to use it for really.

Pretty sure they're paying for the build quality, trackpad and the OS. All which even decent Windows laptops suffer from. And the fact that it retains its value is a bonus a lot better when I come to upgrade it, something I wish Windows laptops had when I came to selling my XPS 5 months after I bought it.

You make the common geek mistake of confusing specs with performance. At all tasks apart from gaming, the Mac is the best performer and it does it with less specs. It also retains its value for longer enabling high resale prices to find new tech

To be honest, like most have used Microsoft systems for their computer needs however I have recently bought a specced mac book air and after getting used to I wonder why I didn't change sooner. Macs are so much more intuitive to use in my opinion. Also I'd pay a similar amount if not more to get a similar specced ultra book from the likes of Samsung.

As someone who is trying to buy a high end laptop for the last month and having gone through the most expensive HP Envy 15 and XPS 15 and returned both because of quality issues (the HP screen was extremely bad and the XPS did had the coil whine + it would shut down when it was under stress), I would say that Apple might be the only company that makes quality, high-end laptops. I won't accept that a new laptop has quality issues from the moment it's unboxed and needs to go back to the manufacturer to be "consumer ready"

I haven't taken the plunge yet to get a MBP, because I would like to be able to upgrade some of the components it in a few years (I have a 7 year old Dell 1520, which I've upgraded with more memory and an SSD which still runs fine for any kind of office work and some light coding). The other reason is that I might want to run Linux on the laptop (no OSX... Linux).

I think I'll try with the guys at PC Specialist to see if they have something good... otherwise I'll happily jump to the dark side of apple.
robinbowes to RyanBest
5 Dec 14 #410
This is actually not the case. I priced up an equivalently spec'd laptop to a high-end mbp recently, thinking it would cost less - it didn't.

I'm an IT Pro. I spend most/all of my working day at a computer (I work remotely, from home). I choose to use a Mac because it is the best available tool to get the job done.

Cheers Chris - Only 1 year as well.. Might be worth contacting Apple. Let me know how it goes.

As for the others asking about mac vs pc. You pay a premium if you require a certain range of products and consistent workflow. Useful if you are using mainly Apple products. I have saved many hours in faff using Apple products. I consider my time valuable so I factor this into the purchase. If you have a lot of time or don't find the Apple products save you time, then I can see why they would be overpriced for you.

Apple products are not perfect. I have Mac products that have slowed down and I then buy the latest. They do have a better resell and better longevity though.

To be honest, it's what most of the people I work with find... and they are self-professed Mac fanboys! We all find them equally slow over time. They just tend to prefer the OS, whereas I much prefer how clean Windows is compared to the messy Mac OS. Each to their own, really. :-)

You'll find a comparative Windows self-build about half the price/60% of the price of an equivalent Mac, FYI. Good luck on the new build!

I have never heard anyone say they get equally slow over time....maybe slightly slower but the difference between a fresh install of windows and 6 months down the line is very noticeable, not sure about macs tbh. I agree, apple computers do get viruses but nowhere near the amount that you can get on windows system. Least with apple computers you dont get updates everyday like you do on windows

Also....i am a windows user, always have been since win 95. Tempted to get into macs but could never justify the cost plus its a large outlay if you dont like it. Sometimes better the devil you know than the devil you dont!!!

But if this pc packs up...i will look into the cost of rebuilding another pc, and a cost of a mac
gizmo2501

I've no beef with the premium laptops they do, they use exceptional materials in the cases etc (and that does come at a price whether it's a top end Dell, Samsung or Apple. It's Mac desktop solutions I find ridiculously overpriced compared to the upper end PC competition on a like-for like spec comparison, even when using premium components from Asus, MSI and Corsair.

Apple are the ultimate marketing machine, selling style above all else (at an unhealthy premium).

In case anyone in here has a 0% credit card etc. and are travelling in the next few days it might be worth checking out the prices for the macs at the Dixon's travel stores - they are doing fab offers right now - just picked up the MBP(MGX92B/A) for 1182 which retails at 1399 on the Apple Store right now and even after student discount seems to be 1203 - so still a saving of 20 quid or so - plus possible 20 pound in heathrow rewards vouchers.

And in case you have Amex worth trying the FourSquare + the voucher as well as 1% Quidco listed here - you are potentially looking at 1182 - (10 (for the four square cashback) + 20 (in Heathrow Vouchers) + 10 (of the PDF voucher code + 10 (As I believe the Pc World/Curry's offer via Amex might apply here? + 10 (1% of quidco cashback)) - 1122 - if all of them work out and I did my maths right

All of this of course assuming you have the money to spend in one go on an Amex card.

I used to buy refurb top-end Dell laptops from the Outlet. Over the years I saved a fortune. Then I needed a MacBook because I had a project that required a Thunderbolt port - no other reason. My plan was to buy secondhand, use it for the project, then sell it on and get another Dell.

I still have the MacBook. It's exceptionally well-built, the battery life is great and the trackpad is better than anything else I've ever used. Specs aren't actually the most important thing about a laptop, the interface and the battery life is typically more important, unless you're after a gaming laptop or some other specific use-case scenario.

I'd prefer a Windows laptop (I use Parallels quite a bit actually) but as things stand, my next laptop will be a Mac.

Cameron583
3 Dec 14 1 #386
I disagree that you're paying for the brand. At the time I bought my MacBook with retina display for 870 pounds on eBay brand new from a shop, it was the only laptop that could offer me the following at the price:

Ability to manipulate projects I was working on on Logic 9/10 on the go
9 hours battery (and a real 9 hours, not the quoted battery life that I've never achieved on Windows laptops). Most likely due to system resource management on OS X.
Great audio quality from the built in headphone jack compared to that of many other laptops
Incredible screen - glossy over matte any day for me.
Seamless integration with all of my Apple services.
A premium build quality
A trackpad that's half decent, unlike the rubbish plastic ones often found on laptops

Sure, it's not perfect, but it's pretty damn close for 870 pounds. Again, at the time, no laptop running windows offered anything close to this, and still doesn't (with the exception of Logic, of course, which is only compatible with OS .

So yes, sometimes people pay for the brand, but that's not always the case. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference. Specs vs the whole package. Personally, I'd pick a 5K iMac vs an equally specced windows machine every day of the week, simply for the display. Even Dell's new 5K display requires 2 displayport connectors, which can cause screen tearing even within the OS. Even though it's only '1K' more, it's almost twice the number of pixels. 8294400 vs 14745600, or 8.3MP vs 14.7

Yes the group hug and all is pretty dopey in my opinion. However surely if you buy something and two versions supersede it with no changes then surely your purchase is still valid?

Also not many Mac users upgrade year on year and the product ranges certainly do not refresh twice in a 12 month period so to be fair your comments are simply incorrect.
PCs on the other hand change configurations much much more in a 12 month period than any apple product and it is important to compare like for like. So comparing a £300 Packard Bell to an Apple Ultrabook is not a fair and like comparison. Compare Ultrabook to Ultrabook and refresh schedule of these.

Went to go for the 0% finance simply for simplicity.
Declined?? Very odd as literally took 0% out with curries in June for a £2,000 TV although paid it off after a month as didn't want it looming over. Thought I'd just put the Iphone6 on finance yet declined even though I work employed and self employed have zero debts or poor credit ratings! Pretty naffed off as this will no doubt go against my credit rating what garbage.
If I knew that I should have just bought the phone outright which im going to do now.

Well that's a constructive response :/

Buying things on credit is almost always a bad deal, no matter the rate of interest. If you can afford it and want it, then buy it. If you need the financing you are on the never never.

No Windows notebook on the market can compete with Macbooks. Plain and simple.

The only people who argue against that, are generally the angry 15 year old nerds who can't afford anything other than the hand-me-down PC their Dad gave them to play Runescape on.

I don't own a Macbook either. Used to, but I generally see no real use for a notebook as my lifestyle doesn't really require it.

Infact the Galaxy Note series pretty much packs all my mobile computing needs into one device.

When it comes to desktops however, steer clear of Apple. They butchered the iMac line with their obsession with making anaemic devices. One of the many reasons so many people have genuine hatred for Apple these days (and not that fake "me too" hatred that so many sheeple share).

If they actually focused on innovation instead of shaving off another 1mm every year then they'd practically own the consumer tech market.

For those after a 6+
There was a 3-4 week lead time yesterday morning.
That went down to 2-3 weeks during the afternoon
and now it's 7-10 working days
I tried chasing stock in-store but the finance is online only

A few things to be aware of depending on what you're buying

Mac Minis now have RAM soldered on to the motherboard so your only option is to upgrade at time of purchase. This negates the price saving over the previous model (I bought RAM from crucial for about £30 rather than £160!!!). It is the best HTPC imo and a definitely under-rated item (especially if you already have a TV and keyboard/mouse).

Don't buy 16gb storage for an iOS device. Seriously!! Everyone I know rams their phones full of apps, music, mail and photos (iMessage and whatsapp storage size swells, especially if you download and save locally all the silly forwards from all the groups you're in). Don't even get me started about 8gb phones.

Bundle Applecare+ in with your order if you want to spread the cost of it. It gives you 2 years accidental protection (for iPhones it's £79, not sure about other devices). They'll replace damaged devices (water damage, cracked screens etc) for £55 excess (max twice). You can buy this after as long as it's within 60 days. There's no student discount on phone applecare+. The old applecare is virtually redundant now because of EU consumer law

Look at sites such as smartfonestore and see how a grade A device compares to your purchase. iPhone 6+ is £789 new or £630 from them!! The only thing stopping me was the fact that it is currently out of stock, not sure how often they'll come in, and it's likely it's over 60 days old so maybe not insurable by applecare+ That said, there are some great savings to be had, especially on older gen devices, and I think they have (from the evidence I've seen, and my one experience as a customer), an excellent/trustworthy reputation. I'd be wary of buying from anyone who isn't of an equivalent reputation.

Just spoke to Apple regarding my 0% finance order yesterday evening for my ipad and macbook pro.

According to Apple, although the delivery date is set for the 4th December 2014, it is subject to change as the finance needs to be fully verified and this can only occur once it is sent to them via Barclay's.

She is confident I should have the products by Friday evening but not likely tomorrow now :disappointed:

Do you have to be on Vodafone?

£16.50 for sim-only is what's making contract more appealing there. If you can find something suitable for around a tenner then this 0% deal would be cheaper (i.e. you'd save £156 if the contract was £10).

Not gonna go looking for sim-ony deals, but Giff Gaff do 500 mins, unl texts and 1gb data for £10 a month?

I really don't think mortgage questions would affect the decision, as I said no as well ... all you have to do is ... say all that is correct as they do a credit check and all credit history is already being maintained. if you have a mortgage, I would advice that you do mention that as eventually they will know ...

3 Dec 14 1 #361
Your calculations do seem correct ... if you're not bothered about the 24 months contract and have no plans of changing phone in the next 2 years, I Would recommend going for the contract instead ... But I would like to suggest one more thing, in case you're getting an iPhone 6 ... Go for the 64GB option ... and here's the reason why !!!
The new iOS 8 takes approx 6-7GB of your space, which leaves you with approx 7-8 GB and to be honest, with your pics, applications, very soon you will start getting No Space Left messages and believe me, that's a pain. It's better to go to a higher memory phone since you'll be using it for the next 2 years

Hope this helps

I want to get a iPhone 6 but in a dilemma to either buy this and get a sim or get it on tariff over 24 months.
Getting it on tariff seems to be cheaper by my calculations.
Can anyone confirm the following in case my maths is not quite right?

Contract
iPhone 6 16GB = Free (using USwitch code)
Vodafone Tariff 600 mins, unlimtd text 1GB data
£34.50 x 24 months
Total = £828

or

Apple 0%
iphone 16 GB = £539
Vodafone Sim Only Unlimitd min, text & 1Gb data
£16.50 x 24 months = £396
Total = £ 935

I'm not really interested in unlimited mins and would be happy with just 600.
Also not bothered about having a 24 month contract

Thanks

No PC World is 0% too on Apple (excluding Iphone). But you have to pay £25 fee so there is an additional cost if its the same selling price. However PC world / Currys run £100 cashback and other discounts from time to time that may make it cheaper than paying full list price at Apple if its on sale at the time.

For PC World/ Currys you pay 10% upfront then dont get asked for anything else until end of 12 months when you have to pay remaining 90% + £25 or go onto the 24% interest payment scheme.

there's a tentative wait as you're not informed of the decision by email but are sent a password and have to log in

i remember this time last year I had real buyer's remorse after buying my MBA but it turned out to be a great decision.
have the same feeing this year - but spending about 70% of the price of a laptop that will last me 5 years on a phone that will last me 2 is probably a touch too far.

PayPal Credit - 0% (http://store.apple.com/uk/payment_plan)

Do people still believe this stuff?
A) its widely reported most apps inc photoshop / office apps actually run faster on a bootcamp/windows setup. So OSX is slower
B) £ for £ there is no contest in performance.
C) Buying a mac for any design related work is just a bad choice for a number of reasons.

good reasons to buy a mac? they look nice + resale value but thats about it...

My personal experience of the warranty is that its worthless. Last mac i owned was an late 2010 imac it developed a backlight fault but despite literally 1000's complaining of the same issue apple just ignored it and wanted to charge me about £400 to fix it.

I ended up fixing the issue by placing abit of folded paper under the screen.

Definitely i7, it is powerful enough to watch TV and you don't have to buy a licence. My ISP plus, er, no MinusNet might be reading this and throttle my speed FURTHER. No, it depends what you use it for. If you use it for simple surfing, go for i5, But if you are a budding musician or a developing graphic designer or a up and coming architect, go for the most powerful machine you can get so that your machine is a bit more future-proof - if there is such a thing in the world of technology!

Why are you even here on a thread where you're likely to bump into us "lowlife cowards".

And for what it's worth, you bashing them for not supporting external display mode on the new retina iMacs - I guess you don't understand the technology behind it. These were made before display port 1.3 was finalised. Displayport 1.2 doesn't have enough bandwidth to drive the iMac's 5k panel. It's just not technically possible. Now that display port 1.3 has been finalised, the next version will probably support it again, however, it won't work with any current machine or graphics card because, guess what? It'll need display port 1.3.

Do us all a favour - hit close on that tab, and keep your hate for another place.

I would comfortably say that unless your usage requirements are going to change substantially, the 2.8Ghz will still be more than enough in 3-5 years time. I am an enterprise software developer (mostly Java) so push my MacBook pretty hard, I also use a variety of Adobe Creative Suite applications and music production software. I am currently (happily) using a 3-year old MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz i5 (8GB RAM). I will be upgrading in the new year, but the main benefit from doing this will be for the improved screen and to reduce the overall depreciation on this model.

However, it's of course up to you at the end of the day. If you'll lose your education discount within 3 years, then maybe go for a higher model just for the increased saving!

Whatever you decide, you're making the right choice going for a MacBook, you won't regret it (not sure if you use Mac already?)

I criticised the new iMacs inability to act as an external display and some loser came out of the woodwork with his 2009 laptop trying to defend the company's honour.

Same happened with Nintendo threads where criticism of the wii u had them call you a fanboy (when I own every nintendo console).

The thing about modern day branding is often mediocrity will latch onto an ideal because it makes them feel their little pointless lives are somehow made more meaningful by latching onto a brand. It's universally regarded apple fanboys are some of the saddest creatures around. My advice is just not pipe up about anything about these two companies however valid and sensible your point may be (and it is). The followers (and that's the most apt term) will have no qualms about tearing you apart over it completely ignoring the fact you have a right to own your opinion on here or anywhere for that matter.

If all fails they will run to the mods like lowlife cowards do. Rise above it. They're not worth it.

Anyways to the point, this is as decent a deal as it gets with apple however for those looking for an alternative consider a credit card also. Just keep up with your payments whatever you do.

Just my two cents: as a computer scientist I spent countless money on Windows machines that I kept clean that only lasted a couple of years each. After my battery died in my last windows laptop a few years ago during an important piece of work, I went straight to town and bought a macbook out of frustration and have never looked back - the performance difference is enormous and its as fast as when I bought it - worth the money. And just so you don't think im biased - I prefer Android for mobile

You are right, the stuff I do will not be heavy - browsing, torrents, AV, Multiple browsers, printing software, dropbox, backup software, laptop to tv software, torrents and a few others.

I assume the 2.8ghz would be fine for it but if I want the macbook to last 3 years, would the 3Ghz processor be better for me to last them 3 years?

This is why I love having a MacBook at work, our "IT Support" company (outsourced) don't have a clue what to do with our Macs so leave us alone. Let them install all their slow bloaty antivirus etc on all the Windows machines. I assume of course you're referring to managing the systems rather than Apple as a supplier.

Question for Apple users, I'm looking at the following spec:

Specifications
2.6GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz)
16GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Intel Iris Graphics
User's Guide (English)
Apple Remote
AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac mini - Auto-enroll
Accessory Kit

Questions:

1. Is the memory increase better than going for the fusion drive?
2. Would I regret not getting Apple keyboard and mouse (both wireless) or would normal ones be fine?
3. Is the media remote worth getting? I plan to use to play music and video
4. Is AppleCare worthwhile and reliability an issue after the 1st year?

Above spec works out £762

Help! I just went to purchase an iphone 6 plus on finance, and when i went to the payment section i clicked on the 'finance' tab and it popped up with billing contact and address, made sure this was filled in and then i clicked continue! Then confirmed my order and all went through fine but it still said the order total was £619 and mentioned nothing about paying £50 a week???

My dad next to me was on his laptop and tried to do it, but he had to fill a whole credit check out with many questions whereas i didnt have this???? Spoke with an apple advisor online who could not help me so i've cancelled it for now as i really dont want 600 quid going out of my account!! They said i should have to do a credit check once id placed my order but my dad hadnt placed one before he had to do???????????

Very confused and i just want an iphone! Can anybody help?

That's a fallacy with regard to the graphics work edge comment, it used to be because of exclusivity with regard to software that was superior for Mac, the playing field is level now, but I'd argue more in favour of a tailor made PC (price + performance) and the flexibility of components available.

Macs are well made, there is no doubt about it. OSX is pretty good, and there are now a wealth of software options as the user base continues to increase. But even though I have an Air and use OSX/Macs for work, I just find them lacking. I can do so much more with my Win 8 PC at home. I can do all the same things as my Macs (work and laptop) and more, plus I can chop and change the config as and when I want for a fraction of the price.

I do believe that the Macbook line is the best Apple offer in terms of build quality and spec for spec with rival PC laptops. You just get the best deal there. The 5K Mac is a joke though for the price, better off opting for the Mac Pro if you can afford that, and intend to use it for it's intended purposes. I think many will want it and have no need or use for a 5K screen, it's meant for editing native 4K video with full UI elements too, meaning you can preview the full video/pic output at the same time as editing in real time.

2 Dec 14 #239
I recently paid £1,200 for my 13" Retina MBP after years of avoiding OS X as much as possible over the years (I'm a professional web developer). I have a 2 year old laptop which cost £700 and is noticeably more powerful than the MBP, but in my opinion, the cheaper laptop doesn't compare as a robust portable machine for my profession. The MBP is superior in these areas:

Portability (it's barely bigger than the MacBook air and is easily carried single handedly in a sleeve)
Build quality (the touchpad is the best on any machine I've used)
Terminal (unless you're a developer this may not be relevant to you)
Battery life (>9 hours vs 3)
Silent (unless I'm casting a video to my Chromecast)
{The Retina screen is nice but I can easily go back to a normal high-definition screen}

Personally, I prefer Windows' experience. However, as a machine that I carry about day-to-day I think the 13" MBP is in a league of it's own, despite the cost.

Comment

The thing is most people who buy an imac will not even be considering an upgrade in two years as the software will still be running sweetly.

Pc users upgrade much more frequently than Mac users, not because they want to but because their hardware struggles much more quickly and they need the upgrade.

The Mac and OS X ecosystem run and last much more efficiently than a PCs.

So keep upgrading with your £600 saving every couple of years and see how long it is before you are behind.

Pears and apples really
Buying Mac means getting OS X. Something you can’t get elsewhere. This is where great power of Apple comes in place – you buy computer with integrated OS, something you can’t get anywhere else with Windows or other OS
It’s all down to personal choices. I prefer to have my mobile and computers in perfect sync.

Oh yeah, one more thing to mention between OS X and Windows... try upgrading your OS.

I'm not talking about incidental patches, I'm talking next version upgrades.Having seen both sides, I would have to say OS X is a better end user experience than Windows.

"When people talk about Apple's support, it is awesome but they won't care at all as soon as your warranty finishes."

That's why there's a warranty period. But do name a merchant/brand that cares about the customer after the warranty expires? Most will either charge you expensively, so you end up bringing it somewhere like the computer shops on Tottenham Court Road and have them fix it for less.
PhilAMurray

Get's to something when one of the deals of the day is paying full retail price for Apple hardware. Suppose it makes things a little more affordable for the fanboys.
klabnix
2 Dec 14 #228
When people talk about Apple's support, it is awesome but they won't care at all as soon as your warranty finishes.

I'd quite like a mac, but mainly for working with photoshop, so I can't really justify the price. A new windows laptop would probably do everything I need and it is handy being able to watch blurays.

imac screens do look great though, but that may be just that they are so bright compared to mine. More than 1080p on such a small screen, I'm not sure I'd notice the difference.

They'd probably have a brand new mac out the moment I buy one too!
CPatrikC
2 Dec 14 #222
I managed to pay about £700 for a dell 15 7000. That's a metal cased laptop. Sure it's a brick, but with an i7, 8gb RAM, and a gt750m, it'd cost much over twice that for a mac book with similar specs. For some of us, we actually prefer windows too! So when Mac owners drivel on about their high and mighty OS, most people don't really care. And I'm happy with just 1080p.

The size thing alone is a huge point that is overlooked by so many mainly because a lot of laptops now are used as just home computers and not taken outside or or a commute on a regular basis. MBPs arent for everyone they are designed with portabilty and usability on the go a huge factor and forsomeone on the go they are amazing bits of tech.

KillFelix
2 Dec 14 2 #208
Couple of things spring to mind:
- Portability. The MPB is half the physical size of the Acer, and a whole kilogram lighter -but granted the Acer has a larger display and BD Drive

- Screen resolution - MBP: 2880x1800, Acer 1980x1080
- Support - Apple support is second to none and you can drop into an Apple Store easily since they are everywhere.
- Battery Life - MPB 8 hours, Acer 4 hours
- Value retention - in a few years the Acer will be worth around £300, the MBP will fetch around £700
- Quality hardware, inside and out. People say they are the same but they really aren't.
- OSX

There's ups and downs to each of course. I've always said Apple products suck on paper but excel in real world usage, and PC's the opposite.

(was 2.5 year old) showed them the letter and they said ok it coved but to get it added i have to phone apple care to add it. (the latter did not say i had 2 do this not sure if this is normal or just an issue with me)

No - he's said he's paying for the quality that the brand represents. PC laptops of equivalent quality hardware-wise are around the same price, and if you don't believe me, open up a Macbook Pro next to a "just as good of a PC" laptop and try telling me they're the same.

It's not just the specs, it's the synergy and efficiency that's present because Apple controls both hardware and software from inception to production - this is where you get the "it simply works" feeling when you start (and continue) to use OS X or iOS.

I've played with DOS (and later on Windows) since I was in 5th grade. I have some certifications on Windows. I even dabbled in Linux for awhile. And it's great if you want to be constantly tinkering with your toys. But as others have pointed out, Windows is a hit and miss the last few years. As OS X is Unix based, the platform is much more stable and robust than Windows. I've had Windows laptops and computers for a long time, from different vendors. All suffered similar issues: vurises, slowing down, crashes, BSODs.

Some people actually do value the stability, robustness, and efficiency more than anything. And this is where Apple shines.

This is a bit of a myth in my opinion. I own a Mac Book Pro 15" with the following specs:

15" screen with resolution of 2560x1600
Intel i7 2.2ghz quad core processor (with turbo boost to 3.4ghz)
16gb of DDR3 1600mhz RAM
256gb SSD
weighs only 2kg and 8 hour battery life

I challenge you (or anyone) to find a laptop with these specs or better for less than £1600
djmackie2000
2 Dec 14 #168
if you can find a educational link for apple or a student this will add 3 years warranty and also get your apple product cheaper.

i done this and saved around 200-300 on my macbook pro and got £100 apple voucher. with 3 years warranty (apple care). macbook pro is 2.5 years old and took it in to apple at the weekend to find some issue ( power connection port was burnt out and some damage to the scree. total cost would of been £500-600 but covered under warranty)

I guess to each to his own. We've had a Macbook in the family for two years now, and I can say that I am impressed. And this is coming from a hardcore MS fanboy who grew up on every single version from DOS 6.22 on a multitude of hardware.

The Macbook is just as fast today as on the day I bought it. Also the battery hasn't run down either. And this is comparing it with a top of the line Dell XPS I had, which became slow over time and the battery just gave up after the first year. And yes I paid just as much for the Dell.

So I think two things Apple got right beyond the brand: the hardware and the OS. And this offers a very good synergy. The Macbook doesn't slow down just because you installed an app. You don't need to worry (too much!) about viruses. It makes life easier. And in this day and age, I value that over tinkering and tweaking.

Microsoft on the other hand makes it so flexible that it requires a fair amount to maintenance and knowhow to keep the OS in shape. Again, it's horses for courses.

PS: If you need a laptop in the corporate (MS dominated) world, you'll find out quickly that Apple can be a headache to manage.

I recently book a Macbook Pro 13" (I work in IT, and am an ex-software developer so I use the machine frequently) to replace my PC. The hardware DOES cost more for a PC, but for software and portability I couldn't find something that would stack up against the machine I brought for the same money. Horses for courses, but I think the laptops are great pieces of kit; having to buy accessories for basics such as an ethernet connection, however, is not something I'm so enamoured with.

It's not solely down to your salary, it will be based on your credit rating, which has a number of different factors including previous loans and agreements held.

I doubt very much that 98% of people will be turned down.

If they only accepted 1 in 50 applications it would be a pretty much a waste of everyone's time offering this at all

Let's put a different spin here:

1. Those who cannot afford to shell out a big amount irrespective of reasons
- installments are a great way of being able to get these items otherwise possibly out of your reach, assuming you can afford the monthly payments. This deal is made even better because you don't get penalised (via the interest rate of the loan) as this is a 0% interest. You pay at retail cost but spread across a number of months. Period.

Scenario: you want the 64GB Wi-Fi iPad Mini 3 at £399 (let's round it at £400 to make calculations easier)
- so cost spread over 12 months, you shell out £40 a month, or spread it even more at 24 months and pay only £20 a month. At ZERO interest, then for the average employed Joe, £20 a month sounds affordable, versus shelling out £400 in one go.

2. Those who CAN afford it
- yes surely for those who can pay for example, £400 for the iPad Mini above, in one go, it still makes sense to take advantage of a ZERO interest deal. Again, you can pay £20 a month for the next 24 months, but you can potentially earn interest off the rest of the money if you paid in installments.

Scenario: you have £400 for the iPad, but go for the installments. So month 1 will be a £20 payment, you still have £380 left. Assume a savings account pays 2% annual interest, the £380 left would earn you something like 60p in interest. Yes it may not mean the world, but compound this with other items on installments at 0% interest (e.g. fridge, tv, blu ray player, you get the idea), and you're roughly earning money versus giving it to someone else via a non-0% interest rate loan.

It's one thing not to be able to afford something (like perhaps a Range Rover), versus not to be able to afford something in one go.

Heat for the find though, and hopefully it helps someone make their Christmas happier. :-)

OS is a debatable point. Apple used to be light years ahead but now there is little between iOS and Windows. What you typically get from a Mac is a marginally more coherent and efficient system which is a little more innovative as a result.

I would love to get an iMac one day but whenever it comes time to upgrade the PC I can never quite justify it despite being into music production and the likes. I'm a bit more tech savvy than your average Joe though and am quite happy to get my hands dirty with PC's. If I was the sort that couldn't be gassed with that then something from Apple would be well worth the extra outlay.

OSX is nice, but not credit nice. What benefit are you really getting over a windows machine at a quarter of the price? The **** thing will still be a pile o crap which wont run the latest OS in 3 years. With no decent warranty offered in the ridiculous price you will be even more **** when it dies after 3 years. I cant believe that people still believe that they dont get viruses, don't have blue screens (Technically true because it isn't blue) and that they don't slow down eventually the same as a PC. Free OS updates? You just paid 2k for a machine!

But wait it does come in a $120 touchy feely aluminum case! Like a tank with a fiesta engine.

That said if i had £800 burning a hole in my pocket, and really had NOTHING better to spend it on (Life, Holidays, Cars, Presents, food....) and i wanted a machine for poncing about going online, or pretending that i can create music. Its at the top of my list. Not kidding! now that you can double click on the top of a window to full screen it in 10.10, i actually quite enjoy using one casually. My rage is gone (Up until i want to play a game).

But seriously since 10.10 i don't hate the product, but i do hate the price, especially as they are sitting on BILLIONS of dollars and the best they can offer people is 0% finance. What a kick to the face that is.

It actually works out slightly cheaper as well. You get to keep money in your bank account for longer, thereby earning interest (say 3%?).

Ok not a huge saving (and even then not actually 3% because the amount you are getting interest reduces each month!), but still...anyone buying should put it on finance if it's 0%.

I know this may be silly question but can you pay off more than your usual payment back one of the months to lower the remaining cost? Or pay off in full whenever you feel?

Between my personal and work tech I have a mac, windows 8 laptop, windows xp laptop, ipad, iphone & an android phone. I know which i prefer but thats the point, its which I prefer.
If you want to buy Apple then 12 months interest free is not a bad way of doing it, if you dont want to buy Apple then don't but accept your opinions of the brand have no relevnce to the deal and move on.

Do HE purchases still include the 3 year Apple Care?? That was an absolute godsend when I last bought on this deal...
monkeyhanger75

I find that as long as I keep itunes off my PC it runs like a dream. Do Apple engineer PC versions of their bloatware to run especially slow with a huge resource hunger going on in the background?

12 months 0% is too long for Apple products, whatever you buy will have been superceded by 2 versions that offer almost no improvement over the old one by the time you've finished paying for it. I witnessed the clapping in of the first customer walking past the Apple shop in the Metrocentre on Sunday, after the staff had all finished their "group hug" just prior to opening. Hilarious!

I've taken out 2 credit agreements with apple in the last 2 years
Last year I took out an iPad on 10 monthly installments
This year iMac on 12 monthly installments

As long as your responsible and make every payment, it is no different from buying it outright and I prefer it this way!

I got to this screen for the iPad mini 3 64mb, but once you choose Barclays, it just wants you to agree to the Ts and Cs which completes the sale (no options for financing appear). Don't really want over £400 coming out of my account this morning....

I can't understand why folk need to comment on products they dislike...at the end of the day I run both android and OS X via a iPad,I also run macs.
Coming from a PC tech engineer of over 14 years it's not just build quality it's the whole way the OS X gels with the hardware.
As we all know windows loves to bloat itself up after a while and windows 8!... What a joke that is.
So no your not paying for the name and also if and when you come to upgrade your apple product will give you a great return unlike your PC that will have to be given away!
Just saying how it is :stuck_out_tongue:

I bought PC about 6 years ago and it's still pretty good. All I changed was a graphics card. That's a part of PC which you use for gaming. And gaming is... ah... forget about it..

I'm sorry but this is so untrue. I'm still running an i7 950 from 2008 which runs anything I throw at it at max settings that will keep me going for more years to come and I haven't even overclocked it. People upgrade their PC's out of love rather than necessity by being enthusiasts. Much like cars. I think Apple products are cool but it would never be my first choice. There are also many premium build quality Windows PC and Laptop systems to choose from that I would sooner pick if I wanted a sturdy metal enclosure.

Thanks for the heads up OP. Hopefully they'll do this when the 6S is out. I like the i6 but can't justify paying over 500 for a device with a small amount of RAM that could become a problem with future iOS updates.

I didn't buy a MBP for the brand name or build quality, though build quality did play a part. I bought it for OS X, battery life and for the Apple customer service should anything go wrong. You didn't just 'ask a question' you said something about people lacking knowledge and assuming it's good because it's expensive which comes across as a tad patronising and unnecessary. Same could be said for your lack of research into the good things about Apple products. Not saying these are a better buy than Windows tech (I'm a windows phone user) but I cannot stand patronising people that talk down to people who invest in Apple products.

Put an order in for a macbook air.site takes you to barclays financing but doesn't offer 0% payment option, only the 14.9%. Didnt go through with finance application but order still stands so will have to ring apple tomorrow to see if they can offer it with the finance deal.
