Just grabbed one of these crackers from Currys - Android 4.4, quad core Intel 64 bit CPU, front facing Dolby-added speakers, full HD 1920 x 1200 IPS screen, 2GB RAM, Micro SD... Yes it's more or less the same spec as the Hudl2 but the screen is far brighter and the battery lasts longer too. It's also damn slim at 7.9mm and only weighs 300g.
They also claim something called Infinity Screen, meaning like the iPad Air 2 and such, the screen is bonded to the covering glass. Whether this is the truth I don't know but it looks fantastic and feels as close to the touch as my iPad Air 2 does, so they've done something right.
Online voucher IPADTAB20 brings it down online, or ask instore and they scan a barcode to knock £20 off.
Versus its nearest rival, the Hudl 2, its lighter (300g vs 410g), thinner, brighter screen, longer battery. Hudl 2 however does have HDMI, this doesn't, plus it has cases ready to go.

You could try, but whenever I ring up ITV and tell them I fancy watching 'Goodfellas' or maybe a bit of 'Buffy', and would they be so kind as to put it on for me, do you know what they do? Do you? They laugh. That's right, they laugh right down the phone at my invisible face. Apparently (and I got this from a manager) I don't have the authority to reschedule shows on the fly. I complained and told him that I think I should get better value for my TV license fee, but he said the BBC got it all anyway. Then he hung up. Disgraceful.

I had a quick play on the new hudl2 in tesco and it lagged on the home screens with alarming regularity...
if this tablet is similar this wouldn't really be an upgrade over my current nexus 2013 would it? it's still silky smooth.
OP Just wanted to say thanks, that's a great price and product and considering i'm on various tech sites every day, this one managed to slip past me. Coupled with the Code and VAT back this is a great deal and worth it for the battery over the Hudl 2.

Just saw this today and I was really impressed with it. It's really the best deal out there by a long shot, only missing feature is that no major custom ROMs support it yet. Also, no custom fit covers with keyboards or other accessories yet.

30 Oct 141#56
done some googling and seems not at the moment, but someone has already hacked a hudl2 to run win8/android dual boot so since it has an intel chip can't see why not in the future.
You have the same 3g tablet as me and if you look at my previous post I was tempted to get this newer version but resisted.
The reason is I flashed my Lenovo 3g version with the A8-50HV firmware and I now have a full functioning phone/tablet that I use a '3' pay as you go sim card with all you can eat data and I can make phone calls on.
gunark to JCLARSSON
30 Oct 14#37
There is a forthcoming 3G version of this if you can wait.
I can understand that. However, with the ubiquity of this Atom chipset and it being 64 bit and therefore Lollipop compatible, I can't imagine we will be wanting for ROMs for long.
How do you find the tablet speed ways?
Where do you get the update
was it hard to update.
Would you recommend this tab. The one i have ordered is due tomorrow.
Thanks in advance

Looks good and I'm very tempted. anyone have an opinion of this compared to a 2014 Asus Memopad 7 inch?
Why would an 8mm think 8 inch tablet make any difference to one that was 10mm thick. I always wonder about how much better battery life I could have got with the thicker tablet, though obviously a bit heavier.
skykid3
30 Oct 14#49
yeah, I want to think thats the case, BUT its not guaranteed, I am tempted to buy though
I imported the official A8-50 folio case from Amazon US for £14.40 including delivery. It is much slimmer and less bulky than the two different unofficial ones I got from Amazon UK.
I can see a picture of the equivalent case for the S8-50 on the Lenovo UK page for the S8 - under accessories - but no official part number etc yet..So, if this becomes available I would definitely recommend if you want a good compromise between protection and bulk.

There's a suggestion that the S8-50 has a better battery life than the hudl2. This review says it has a 4290mAh battery, whereas the hudl2 has a 5710mAh battery according to this teardown. Is the S8-50 just more efficient in terms of energy usage? 4290mAh seems quite low in comparison to the competition.

I would love to get one of these for £100 - but for me the selection of ROMs available for the Nexus 7 (2013) is what makes it great and still one of the best tablets around.
Just had a check on xda-developers and there doesn't seem to be a forum for it, will owners of this therefore be stuck with whatever Lenovo give them?
I'd love to jump on this, but that's stopping me!
PS - OP does it have GPS or nay?

I think the Nexus 7 and the Nvidia Shield are confirmed at the moment, unknown for most others.
NVIDIA Shield is a great replacement for the Nexus 7, as it has most of the hardware the Nexus 9 has.
It comes with a 64-bit chip and yet a 32-bit operating system. There is no doubt they have done this in preparation for Android L. So I would be confident in saying Lenovo will release Android L 64-bit for this device.

I would say if it's a recent device and the manufacturer is decent the likelihood is they will, normally the barrier to upgrading the OS is that the hardware isn't well equipped enough to support it.

Just had had a look in store and noticed 3 things;
1- doesn't seem to have GPS built in
2- I don't think the screen size is any bonus over my nexus 7
3- curry's staff really haven't got a clue about anything lol, the kid that offered his assistance tried to tell me it's 3g and the SD slot doubles up as a sim slot hahaha
yes it was click and collect and i showed them the web page but no luck that was until i got home and called customer services, told them about my problem and they told me to return to the store as the code is valid for in store too  anyway to cut a long story short the manager was still being awkward on my return and refused to honour it that's when i asked to call customer services who confirmed the code as valid for click and collect and also gave me another £10 off for my troubles.

Just got 1 from my local currys\pc world Liverpool. No problems getting the £20 code in store, they have a staff circular\memo about the offer so all stores should be fully aware of this offer and accept the code in store. Looks a bloody decent screen after checking out the display model to.

31 Oct 14#193
Went into Currys and there are 3 models all lined up next to each other to make things confusing two models had the £20 off label but THIS model did not!
A8-50 wifi and 3G HAD the label,
S8-50 did NOT have the label, but the shop assistance punched it into his till and said £20 is definitely applicable,
For what it's worth, the S8 is so much nicer than the A8, the sharpness and quality of the screen is noticeably better on the S8, also the weight is lighter and the aesthetics. S8 has edge to edge screen, whilst the A8 has the nasty thick border all the way round.

Just got mine at Leeds (the last of 4 in stock, the other 3 were reserved). They only seem to have them in black (the picture on the box is yellow, but it says ebony on the back). Just had a look at this in Currys PC World Swansea (Morfa).
The doughnuts have the wrong model on display! While the label is correct (the S8 at £149.99 and detailed the correct specs), the actual device on display looked and felt inferior, and had a much lower display resolution. The actual model on display above the S8's label was an A5500 with Android 4.2.2 with a MediaTek processor. Stupid fools. I really wanted to have a look at the S8 before deciding whether or not to replace my aging, laggy Nexus 7 (2012).

I've have just been to Currys and they told me I was mistaken (this was the manager). He said "Lenovo dont make an S8" .... but they do an A8 with 3G which is the one they have on display. £149.00
He reckoned I had got my model numbers mixed up with the Samsung Tab S.
I asked him to write it down and check it out for me ... he said he was a bit busy but would do it later.
Too busy to deal with customers ... I said " I wont be here later" and left.
Think I've made my descision, it's going to be a Tab S when they drop.... but not from Currys !

Lenovo winter vatback terms:
"12. Payments will only be made to the individual who has purchased the product and whose individual name appears as the recipient on the proof of purchase invoice."

The model does NOT have an hdmi connection as IT checked mine as soon as I got it home. Funny the conflicting spec details from Lenovo then. But they did the same conflicting spec sheet with the yoga 2 10" tablet to where the Lenovo website stated the memory of the wifi only version was 32gb when in fact it shipped with just 16gb. So at least 2 new tabs Leveno are mis advertising the specs for.
Was concerned over the screen size for this but the full hd screen suits the size very well and far outweighs a bigger lower res screen and looks so much better than my partners few weeks old Lenovo 10" 1280x800 tab.

Just saying, but most batteries have to have a few full charge/discharge cycles to reach capacity... my old hudl lasts around 5-6 hours at least for watching movies and gaming, web browsing thrown in... that's 5-6 hours straight by the way, not a few hours here and there. You may well have had a defective hudl 2, but unless you used it for a week or 2 and charged/discharged you wouldn't know for sure.
Anyway, tempted by this deal... but may hold off for a bit to see whether it'll get lollipop update... main reason being I want a tablet that will have a longer lasting battery between charge cycles, lollipop is supposed to introduce a lot better app performance in relation to battery drain. Will wait to confirm this with my moto g before taking the plunge for another tablet.

Do not buy any tablet running on Kit Kat with no known Android Lollipop upgrade.
Android Lollipop will revolutionise the universe. It is the best Android release since Android releases. The best at taking your data and putting it on Google servers since Google were invented. The best at taking all your information and selling it down the river since dodgy as f*ck looking CEOs were invented. But I digress. If you have Chrome/Miracast and this tablet is compatible with either then I don't think you need to worry about a mini HDMI out. However, if you don't wish to have Chrome/Miracast or your tablet doesn't for whatever reason support either then you need HDMI out for connecting to a screen. I have a mate at work who has Chromecast at home but when he goes on holiday he takes the cable with him and if the TV in the hotel room as HDMI then he'll connect it up for the kids watching films.

It happens using even simple apps, apart from that the Wi-Fi is really weak on this tablet and there's no automatic brightness adjustment. Shame as it looked like a very very nice deal. It isn't just my tablet as others reported the same problems elsewhere.

On our receipt it states "coupon" for the £20 off than state any kind of offer from Currys as such for the £20. Coupon, I assume could also mean or be claimed that a gift voucher\coupon was used for the "coupon" showing on the receipt?.
Either way they are 2 separate issues, 1 a retailer offer nothing to do or connected with the manufacturer and the other a manufacturer offer nothing to do with connected to the retailer. So can't see there being a problem myself. But reading that these vat back offers are hit and miss to getting the money back anyway, would not be surprised if Lenovo try to use it as a get out. Small claims court for me if they do.
Also, a couple of issues with this tab, hopefully nothing to be concerned over. Fully charged it yesterday and went on it for about 30-40 minutes last night. Only this morning the battery level is showing just 32%!. That can't be right after no more than 40 mins use after a full charge for a claimed 7 hour battery life. Do Lenovo tabs take a few charges to reach full battery capacity or should they be at full capacity right away?.
Also do Lenovo tabs usually totally shut down than go into standby after being idle for a while?. As twice my tab seems to have totally shut down than stay in standby which I find highly irritating if it does that by design. Apart from that very happy with it upto now.
mecheekymonkey
1 Nov 14#266
Cancelled my order this morning. Not much response from Lenovo forum about the issues raised. I'll let it settle for abit b4 giving it another consideration
Hmm, seems my reporting of my tab shutting down for no good reason a while ago looks to be a known issue then seeing as a few users have reported it. Wander what Lenovo have said on the issue as clearly its a known fault on some units?.
Still not found any reports to the other issue I reported on here earlier of the fully charged battery having dropped to 32% overnight after no more than 40mins use.
If the self switching off continues over the next day or 2 and I have to return it to currys as a defective tablet, how the hell would I and others prove to currys that it completely shuts down at random if left idle for a while?. As its hardly something that is likely to happen or be able to be demonstrated to a sales assistant in store if it needs returning as a defective unit.

You hold your finger on it and then a trash box appears on the top to drag the icon into, BUT that will also un install the app. Lenovo launchers dont have an app drawer so your only other option is install another launcher or put your unwanted icons into a folder.

I was going to return my Hudl 2 and order Lenovo, but I think I will hold on until there will be some more info on the issues you guys reporting. Hudl 2 is already rooted and mod scene for S8 is non-exising ATM. The problem in waiting for a hopeful or assumed firmware update from Lenovo is it would take time if it does not currently exist. And by waiting more than x days means currys are unlikely to refund the money for a defective unit and will either offer a replacement or a credit note.
Going to check if there is an update for mine later as I never checked last night as so still has the firmware it was shipped with that may well have been updated by now. Otherwise if shut down again when I get back home I'll be calling currys to report a problem to see what they say about returning it as a defective unit.

All guys who have problem with s8-50 did you tried update it to latest firmware?
dave9946
1 Nov 14#278
Wasn't running anything at all, it happened twice when simply left idle. The first time it shut down was yesterday when I left it on charge before going out. But the fact I simply plugged it in to charge, switched it on to check it worked but never set up the tab at that time (as was going out) could have accounted for that if it auto shuts down after a battery charge if the tab is not setup?. The second time was when I left it overnight, again idle not running anything after I had set the tab up and trying out youtube, iplayer and a few other things. Might be nothing but going to see over the next day or so as it seems ok left idle now just being on standby.
Just wanting to fully run the battery down now to give it another full charge to better test battery life as I was concerned how much the battery life dropped overnight, from a full charge to 32% after no more than 40 mins use and left idle overnight.
jamgin
1 Nov 14#279
Doesn't sound right dropping to 32% so quickly. I've got one ordered and will report back on issues once I've had a play
dave9946
1 Nov 14#280
I've now updated to the latest firmware to see how things now go. These issues may well as suggested simply be firmware related and the newer available firmware might help deal with it.
Could watch the live black hole wallpaper for hours, really shows how good and detailed the screen is. For which I feel some of the detail would be lost on a same res but lower pixel density 10" screen. I can see how 8inch screens are now becoming the more preferred size for manufacturers as I feel in many cases they work better depending on the requirements of the owner.
dave9946
1 Nov 14#281
Well the battery usage indicates Screen-38%, WLAN-38%, Tablet idle-9%, Android OS-5%, Android System-5% with the others 2% each. In fact as I typed this on my phone the Screen has gone up to 47% usage of battery power which is concerning a little.

Quite a few reviews saying it has a tendency to shut down suddenly for no apparent reason:
I think if the available firmware update does not fix any issues being had most folks are jumping to simply returning for a refund, might be something to keep in mind.
irradiated
1 Nov 14#285
i guess it depends how much youve used it dave, its 47% of the used battery not 47% of the total battery charge if you see what i mean
if its only been on 5 minutes then its not much actual power, if its been on hours then its a big jump
dave9946 to irradiated
1 Nov 14#287
My guess is it reports the percentage of how much battery power used has been used by which part of the tab?. But whilst the screen had a sharp rise as I posted during a post above that also has to allow for the other battery using components of the tablet to adjust and using less on say the browser would assumingly adjust the usage levels in other areas without those other areas really being used?.
The wifi and screen seems to account for most. Currently running as screen 54% of currently used battery charge used whilst WLAN is currently 25%. I guess its correct the screen using the most but concerned on how that level rises pretty much before my eyes as its rised to 62% of the currently used battery charge as I finish typing and post or in 5 minutes.
I really need to drain the battery, do a full charge and run say a video in a loop to get a rough better idea of battery life as the initial charge might be the issue I wander and so a full charge from a empty battery (50% charge upon unpacking) might help.
But as the stated battery is 7 hours I'll not be happy with anything less than 5 hours general use.

i nearly went for this deal to the point where i reserved to collect at pcworld. ...then i came across Samsung tab pro 3 16gb for £209 (£20 off when you quote ipadtab20 in store pcworld), if your thinking about a quality tablet hold fire before you buy this lenovo 8" as for an extra £80.
I played with lenovo in store having reserved both lenovo and Samsung and I'm not kidding for 80 quid more the resolution and build quality are night and day. I'm writing this on my new tab 3 pro and it's beautiful.
your budget may not stretch or you don't want 10" but if it's because you didn't know the tab pro was reduced from £449

Hooe this helps from someone who set out to buy lenovo but was very very happy to part with the extra £80....on a side note you only have till Tuesday to get the extra £20 off

I fell for the tab pro too but hated it, really wasn't much of a step up from the Lenovo and didn't have that ludicrous value for money feel, despite the reduction. That and the screen was merely decent (back light bleed, colour uniformity, OS lag). Plumped in the end for a tab a 8.4 due to Currys not seeing eye to eye on a refund and, while having an amazing screen, the Lenovo is nearly as good in terms of hardware and for nearly a third of the price.
dave9946
1 Nov 14#292
Well the pixel density are fairly close so not as night and day as claimed as I viewed the very same Samsung unit myself yesterday and upon close inspection there is little notable difference. Like tv's easy for currys to up brightness and contrast levels to better "display" there more profitable tabs over other better value ranges. Go back and set brightness and detail levels to the same and then compare. As display store levels are rarely a true indication of quality.
Tried two whole days to resist it! Then one whole day researching the option, best android tab on the market :innocent:
user3907
1 Nov 14#296
Bought it today and was very happy with thickness, weight and screen colours. But during the fist hour of usage I started to spot extremely frustrating random screen brightness drop (like ambience light sensor is working... and this model doesn't have one). It drops from 100% to 40% and doesn't respond for further adjustments until something happens again and it's back to normal. Does someone has similar problems? Is it a software or hardware issue? I really want to keep this tablet, because it is a joy to use, but defiantly with total brightness control.

By the way this tab (possible problems aside) is also very quick at downloading via wifi, installing and being able to open apps unlike other tabs I know of. Not sure how power hungry the game is but Revolt 2 looks and plays as good, smoothly and graphically impressive as Mario Kart on the Wii, just far better res of this tab. Might try a few old skool emulators on this as well as higher end android games to see how good it is as just a games tab alone.

There be a hack online for the dell venue pro 8 where you remove the back and stick a thin sheet of copper between battery and back cover, it helps massively with cooling allowing the bay trail to remain at the higher 1.8 clock speed which allows for better gaming performance.

Whilst I've had zero issues with my tab, no random shut downs or anything since setting it up and doing any updates, 1 issue still concerns me a little and like Friday night (was left on charge sat night) that's the issue of how much the battery change drops overnight. Pretty sure the battery level was about 60% last night, this morning it stands at 32%!. The graph seems to indicate a steady decline during the night yet the Tablet Idle usage only accounts for 3% of the total battery charge used which makes no sense seeing as it appears there has been a reduction of 28% in the total charge overnight.
Has anyone else noticed a similar thing with there tab?. I feel I may be missing something than a problem itself as all was fine using the tab during the day yesterday with certainly no big drops in battery charge before left idle last night as was probably about 60% charge remaining after being used for a few hours which is in line with hours use per charge.
DarrylJohn to dave9946

Make sure Wifi is turned off when the tab is in sleep, that'll be the biggest drain.

I know there are lower and higher quality settings for the BBC i-player, but its hardly the full hd programming we can get on non android devices.
Are there any known fixes or workarounds to force the BBC i-player etc to play via a browser or a compatible browser that will work to play full hd programming via the browser itself on full hd tablets?.

Thanks, going to give it a try tonight, though not really a problem with my phone weather the wifi is on or not, but will try anyway.
But in checking, the wifi only accounts for 13% of the used battery charge with the screen being the biggest culprit at 55%, with tablet idle just 3%. Supposed to be 16 days on standby so something is getting missed here. The only thing I can think of it that going into settings and apps it appears that even though I have closed apps after using them that some don't seem to have fully closed or shut down. Angry Birds for example, even though not played at all today is indicating its still running and the "Force Stop" icon is still lit to force the game to stop even though its not loaded and not played today. Could something like this stop the tab going into standby\sleep properly I wander?. Pressing the "Force Stop" icon gives the message "if you force stop an app it may miss behave".
Somewhat confused as don't get this on my android phone or with the other tablets we have. But will be sure to switch the wifi off overnight to see if that helps in any case.

Think I'll stick with my trusty Nexus 7 (2012). Yes, it can get very laggy, and my model is one of the earlier ones with a creaky screen on the left hand side, but I've used it every day since I bought it in August 2012 and it has never let me down. When the lag becomes unbearable I just reset the damn thing and it's as good as new (admittedly only for a few months).
I'll now wait for the price of the Nexus 9 to come down before considering an upgrade.
Started charging it with battery at 13%. An hour later and it's at 24%.
That's no use to man nor beast.
Switched off Wifi connection but charging just as pathetically - only up to 37% after an extra hour.

Yes Currys are patently unhelpful unless you can demonstrate a physical issue beyond doubt. If not, tough sweater meat.
The font size issue is also present on the Tab S 8.4, as its down to the resolution. You could root it and change the PPI but beyond that it's an Android scaling issue.
dave9946
4 Nov 14#390
Well whatever I did yesterday or if that 2 Battery app did its job sure seems to have solved the problem. Went to bed with 93% battery power, woke up with 92% battery power remaining.
Still not 100% its directly the wi-fi itself as the wi-fi alone being on should not be the cause of a 25%+ reduction in battery charge overnight when not even being used and just sitting idle. I mean this is KitKat, supposed to handle these things better right?. My guess is its these bloody apps that you have to give permission or do by default to access the contents of the tab etc and its been doing so constantly at night time?.
Either way it seems sorted and probably not a tablet issue but more a nosey app access issue. Is there any app available that monitors remote access of apps accessing the tab and its contents as would be good to remove any culprit over nosey buggers of an app.
dave9946
4 Nov 14#391
Actually many of us have been able to simply go in store and pay to get the discount by either reserve and collect or simply mention of the offer online. 1 person mentioned that the £20 offer was even promoted in there store and with me the store.mentioned they had a circular\memo about the offer to accept it in store.
Probably down to individual store management and there inability to pay attention to internal memos etc. As some stores and currys customer services have confirmed the offer applies instore too.

Is anybody getting any screen brightness problems?
I picked the new tab up yesterday and done the software update straight away
If used on full brightness when the tablet does any intense work and it gets warm the screen dims to about 50% and stays like that for a few minutes then brightens back up.
If i go to the brightness settings and lower and then increase the settings it sometimes comes back at 100% and sometimes I have to wait for a few minutes.
I ran the antutu benchmark test on full brightness and by the end of the test it was dimmer then i let the tab rest and it brightened back up.
The rear of my tablet above the lenovo signs gets pretty warm/hot is that normal on these because my older A8-50 stays cool.

Picked up one of these yesterday from Argos. Hunting around for a tablet for 12 year old daughter was giving me a massive headache. I'd narrowed it down to 3 devices, all 7"-8" but then she said she wanted a 10" tablet like her friend. AAARRRGH!!
Getting a decent 10" tablet proved to be even more problematic. So I took the plunge and went for this.
I've just spent an hour setting it up with some games and getting her Google Play account up and running. It's much faster and smoother than I expected. The speakers are the biggest surprise, though. They're loud! She's not going to need headphones with this, except so as not to disturb the rest of us.
It feels pretty solid as well. And you get a £20 voucher from Argos as well. So I'm pretty pleased with it. Think she will be too.

I've just returned the one I bought yesterday to pc world Aintree Liverpool and what a nightmare that was !!
I posted a question above #394 about the screen dimming to 50% after playing games for about 40 minutes and the tablet getting hot at the rear.
Pc worlds first response was this tablet is not designed for playing some games so its normal to overheat and shut the screen down to 50% So I told them that they are basically telling me the tablet is not fit for the purpose it was made for, they then wanted me to give them my daughters google store password so they could try a game themselves for 40 minutes to test if i'm telling them the truth about the screen problem.
It was only after I started raising my voice and demanding an apology and compensation for my time if I was to wait while they tested it they decided to gave me a refund.

I used to work in Currys, and they understand both sides of the story, but the onus mostly lays with DSG for not trusting their staff enough to make an informed decision. The biggest problem is most of their staff aren't informed or care to know, and are either dizzy kids who aren't motivated enough to train and do their job properly, or arrogant management who believe they're always right. JL's policies are a lot more forgiving, but they tend not to be any
On the other side, you generally get misinformed customers who don't do enough research on the purchases they make. Since tablets are mini computers, they can have a feck load of things that can go wrong. Fortunately, with the right hardware, they are usually fixable with updates.
I bought one myself, and it kept restarting. I applied the update, and now it works (for now). The battery does get warm, but on thin client tablets with a minimal frame on a hi res screen, I know enough to expect that sort of behaviour, but YMMV. If it started to burn, or get unreasonably hot, then that's an issue. As for the screen dimming, I'd contact Lenovo support to see if they're coming up with a patch for that, since it's likely a software issue.
No offence, but for something like this, I'd employ a little more patience before returning it.

1. High accuracy, use gps, WLAN & mobile networks to determine your location
2. Battery saving, use WLAN & mobile networks to determine your location

Not sure what my issue was with the battery charge, but installing that 2 battery app or whatever it was mentioned yesterday seems to have sorted everything. As fully charged it yesterday, spent a little time on in last night, only lost 1% of the charge overnight, been on it for an hour or so today, watched 90 of streaming tv and still have 60% battery left. Either the wifi or apps using the wifi (than the wifi itself) that you have to allow to access the tab that has been the problem. So an app to deactivate or restrict the wifi when not in use seems to have solved things.
No other problem at all besides that after running the update. And even if knowing all this in advance I'd still go and buy another if we needed 1.

The problem with waiting and being a bit more patient is if its not a software problem and sorted by a fix in a few weeks pc world would have wanted to 'try' and fix it themselves or even worse ship it off for god knows how long to the manufacturers.
The other problem is updates are not always reliable, for instance I have the older version of this tablet the A8-50 3g and that worked brilliantly until the last two updates and now two of my most used apps (tv catchup & filmon) no longer work even after deleting and re-installing them hence the purchase of this tab.

Just picked up on from the cambridge store, for people wanting other colours (like me) i asked the staff and said i can return it within 21 days without a problem as long as its in the original pack and UNOPENED. So you can literaly swap for a different colour which is supposed to be with currys around 2 weeks time and also the benefit is that if lenovo dont update anyone on the release of android 5.0 lollipop then I'll simply return this and go for another one.
Just sharing my opinion and experience. The guy at currys himself was cursing their system saying they weren't given enough training to deal with problems. Tried the one they had on display and it was snappy, quick and awesome display hope its not misleading to the actual one.

I wanna change my rate, Currys is the company you really need to get away with.
I bought two on Friday. One is fine. The other one smells bad, and then develops random screen flashes.
I brought it back to Currys for a refund.
But all the currys employees insist that I have to reproduce the faulty for refund!
It's not my fault that the pad is not working properly.
How the hell am I supposed to spend all night staring at the bloody screen to capture the mini seconds splash?!

Well i think its was clearly obvious what i was referring to, if the product had a developed a fault with it. Obvious when you break the seal, the goods are used. But, and under consumer law, you are entitled to a refund if they are not fit for purpose.
Clearly from your statement, you don't understand consumer law. An example of this would be when i purchased a few items from pcworld. 1 external hd caddy. This after using it less than a week burnt out. I took it back and got a refund for my money. Under your theory, this wouldn't be possible.
I think you need to either brush up on your consumer law, or rewrite your sentence, so it makes better sense.

Blimey, calm down mate! I'm not on currys side,I'm just saying the experience I had with them - hence "in their opinion" - and it was just that, you have to show the issue or it has to be sealed. I dont stand **** from no one, and anyway, you cant kid a guy who knows all the tricks in the box. Your likely to find yourself on the losing the side. I am not bragging before you think, i am trying to help people stand up for there rights. If the product is faulty, they may simply ask what was problem. Only because there are allot of non technical mind people who buy from there, and it is genuinely a user mistake. For the more competent people, and people in that line of field, can baffle the sales men with science, who ends up agreeing with you. Thats my experience anyway.

I am lucky enough to capture the flash dim of the screen on video last night.
After literally staring at the screen for longer than 1 hour.
The flash showed once in half an hour time, but not showing for another 15 minutes.
I have to capture a 15 minutes video and chop it afterwards because of the irregularity when the flash will appear.
My point was, putting customer through these kinds of pain is not a big business like Currys supposed to operate.
To ask me to demonstrate the fault is practically calling me a LIAR!
AND I DONT like that!
ShaunnyBwoy
5 Nov 14#447
Calm down, it's only an advert! Asking for proof is not calling anyone a liar! Generally speaking, you'd be surprised the amount of times customers return "faulty" goods that work fine after reading the manual, or grabbing a manufacturer update. I don't agree that it's the onus of the customer to prove their product is faulty, and up to now, they still haven't found an effective way of dealing with this.
DSR laws should be applied to high streets if they want to restore lost trust, but since gov are a backward bunch, they appear to be strengthening the likes of Amazon with their actions (or inactions). First parking charges around Town Centres, and then tax laws and consumer protection regulations not being applied.

dave9946 to ash786b8
7 Nov 14#474
Its almost certainly related to the wifi in 1 way or another as I posted the exact same issue last Saturday I think it was when I noticed the battery charge had dropped by over 25% overnight just left idle despite the specs saying it lasts 16 days in standby.
Using a wifi management app such as 2 battery manages wifi on the tab and only switches the wifi on every 15 minutes at night just to sync and check for updates etc. Doing this as suggested by someone else resulted in just a 1% reduction in battery charge overnight.
My own guess is when installing apps you typically have to give permission for the games servers to look at and access the tabs contents etc and this is probably what may be happening and thus keeping the wifi connection open and active.
Watching video, I can get probably about 5 hours (keep meaning to fully test video streaming to check how long per charge), just surfing several hours, gaming probably about 5-6 hours at a guess depending on how power hungry the games are. The spec does state just about a 7 hour usage per full charge. And as someone else also pointed out your supposed to fully charge and discharge the battery a few times before it reaches its full capacity.

Interestingly and in no way being negative towards this rather fine tab, having been playing the processor heavy GT Racing 2 games for a few days and getting XBMC up and running on mine I've noticed a drop in battery charge quite quickly. Playing GT Racing 2 & streaming with XBMC I find I probably can't get much more than 3 hours. Of cause the stated 7 hours battery life is always going to be the optimum figure and probably can last that long or even more if lighter not so esource heavy games or just surfing & listening to music etc.
I guess it could be said a minimum of 3 hours and upto about 7 hours usage per charge. Video streaming via BBC i player etc, I, think I'm looking at about 4-5 hours for me. But charging, I have found it to be ok myself.

dave9946
11 Nov 14#491
Even I'm starting to grow a little frustrated at the battery charge lasting far less than the stated 7 hours under some circumstances and so am running some tests to verify for sure.
The tab has been charged several times now (from below 10%) so should be at the full capacity that a few charges are said to be needed in order for the battery to reach optimum performance. But I've noticed that as said for the GT Racing 2 & XBMC & even BBC iplayer I'm getting far less than the stated 7 hours.
Sure, I know we can never expect the full 7 hours from resource heavy applications and gaming. But it seems from reading reviews of other tabs including other Lenovo tabs that typical battery tests also include playing 720p footage in a loop to test video playback. This is suggested on better brands to get somewhere in the region of 3/4 of the stated battery charge for video playback which seems reasonable. In which case this tab should give in the region of 5 1/4 hours video playback to be reasonably acceptable for video playback based on a 7 hours usage per charge. A little less than that could be disputed as still acceptable. A lot less than 5 1/4 hours could be seen as highly unacceptable and misleading in the stated usage in hours per charge. Even half (3 1/2 hours) the stated usage per charge for video playback could be seen as totally unacceptable and miss representation and fraudulent advertising of a product and its abilities etc. More so if its not stated under what typical usage the manufacturer tested the battery to give and state the usage per charge.
However, having just done a test timed 720p video streaming for 20 minutes the battery usage dropped 9%. For a full charge this should be 220 minutes or 3 hours 40 minutes. Of cause the wifi during this time is also constantly being used than simply being "switched on" so could be seen as acceptable under such circumstances. But running such a test under and for a full charge will be more accurate as I will do later.
But I also have a downloaded 720p program off the BBC iplayer and so later will test that with wifi switched off for a test period of 20 mins and a full charge to to see how that goes.
Could be nothing and totally not realising how long I'm using this tab for per charge. But in the absence of any reviews properly testing battery charge usage I guess its down to us to test.
irradiated
11 Nov 14#492
dave, for anything that states 7 hours id knock 20% off at least as its done under test conditions with everything set just right, take the 7 hours with a pinch of salt
in real world testing i can get 5 hours no bother so to me its good but like most things you do get what you pay for and higher priced tabs will often give better battery life, for the money, this is great
lp47
11 Nov 14#493
I think also having slightly below average battery life is a trade off that you have to accept when you have such a thin and light device. Obviously a larger, heavier tablet will have better battery life, but when it comes to an 8 inch tablet that weighs and measures what this does, I think it's more than acceptable.
Edit: Thank you for posting your findings though. I'm still curious to find out the results from the non Wifi playback test. I'm personally experiencing roughly 50% reduction in battery after about 3 hours on screen time from normal use (browsing the web, reading the news etc).
dave9946
11 Nov 141#494
To be honest, I'm not to bothered by even the stated 7 hours battery life as such. Because as said its a trade off between light and thin and battery usage per charge. Though in all honesty I'd personally prefer slightly thicker & heavier tabs but better hours per charge instead.
But test conditions aside, I'd still have thought it reasonable to expect in the region of 75%-80% of the stated and claimed usage per charge for moderate usage application and would be happy with that hence my testing just to see. As in many cases in the home I could easily just leave it plugged into the charger most of the time anyway.
My second test of offline video (wifi switched off) viewing with a 720p program for 20 minutes resulted in just a 6% battery usage. This works out about 5h 35mins which I'd say is pretty decent for 720p. And certainly in the region of 80% of the stated "test condition usage" which few could really complain about.
I have also done a second online streaming test with what seems to be an SD than HD program from the BBC iplayer and that came back with the same 6% usage for the 20 min offline test using 720p footage which was a little surprising and good to see as the wifi would use quite a bit of that 6%?.
Pretty happy with my test results upto now. But I want to do some full charge testing with video to see if the full charge test results give the the same reflection of what a 20min test suggests or what any difference might be either way. Will then move onto gaming tests later in the week when I have time as that will need constant attention and usage.

It's my first tablet, and my impressions are very positive. Inevitably people having problems will be overrepresented in discussion forums, as people tend not to come back if everything is fine. So thanks again to Dave for balancing out that selection bias. On my part there are no screen problems, very minimal rubber smell, all fine.
I'm using it as a glorified e-reader, mostly for pdfs/epubs, with some rss reading/email etc, on almost the lowest brightness. It looks like I'll get 8-9 hours of battery like this, almost all going on the screen. I fully charged it before usage, have wifi on, but deleted some apps.

Well I'm only posting on my test findings in the absence of any such info elsewhere as such. As for me real world testing and results count for more than manufacturer stated specs as far as battery charge goes. Sure, most know they will unlikely to ever achieve lab condition stated charge times, but it certainly gives a more realistic expectancy of the battery life per charge if tested in typical usage enviroments.
I tried a full battery charge video streaming test yesterday with a 720 hd footage after my original 20 minutes sample test the other day. But yesterday I had problems streaming 720 hd footage for some reason and suffered several disconnections in the streaming. To add to that I had to stop the test anyway after 3 1/2 hours. But when I did stop I still had 26% battery left which in theory gave a battery life streaming 720 hd footage of about 4 hours 40 mins which is not to bad for a stated 7 hour battery.
But I was not happy with the test conditions and ran a second test today after finding some stable 720 hd streaming footage on xbmc.
This time it was very stable through out the test and the results were very surprising which may have helped by very few disconnections this time. With a fully charged battery streaming 720 hd footage via wifi, by the time the battery charge died & shut the tablet down I had got 5 hours 30 mins out of the charge.
Granted, the headphones was connected and the volume on low for most of that but I doubt that will have made any real difference. The screen brightness was about 45% which for me personally is pretty much the lowest I'm happy taking it if watching films & TV on it. Others might prefer the brightness higher (myself included if connected to the mains or with test results in mind) and others might be ok with it a little lower which of cause affects how much charge you will get out of the battery. But I'm more than happy with the results for streaming via wifi alone and hope to try via downloaded 720 with the wifi off tomorrow for a full charge with the same footage if I can for which I'd expect an offline test to last longer still, maybe in the region of 6 hours+.

Has anyone found any gel/rubber cases for this, I want to give it to my kids for xmas, but lack of cases is a major worry, need to return it this weekend if not. No point keeping it if it will get destroyed quickly
Anyone got a view on how sturdy it is? Bash proof?

More testing results today on this tablet as the bad weather kept me at home all day.
After the last test I timed the charge time which took 2 hours 45mins from completely flat to fully charged. Not to bad but a little slow these days I thought for an 8inch screen tablet. But hay, what I know about charging times is nothing, just an opinion.
Right, I've done an offline video playing test today. I did not use the intended same 720 hd footage as yesterdays online streaming test as I intended for reasons I probably don't need to go into. But I instead used a dvd quality rip of the daughters Toy Story dvd instead as I had that to hand. But I will possibly still do a hd offline streaming test as part of a further different test next week.
But today's offline (wifi switched off) video streaming test with a dvd quality video rip seemed to be heading for expected results based on yesterdays test of between 5 1/2 hours and 6 hours. And to be honest the rate and steady pace at which the charge seemed to be dropping first indicated the battery would be totally flat within 5 hours 45 mins usage which by 6% charge remaining still gave this indication.
Then by 4% remaining something strange strange seemed to happen that was totally unexpected and defied logic of sorts. By 2% charge remaining I had been looping the video for 5 hours 45 minutes and had only dropped 2% of the charge in about 20 minutes. I then fully expected the battery to die within several minutes at the very most which I feel would be impressive for playing video on a 7 hour lasting battery charge on a rather budget tablet.
But no, it kept going and going past the 6 hours at the very most I'd have ever have expected the battery to last playing video. By the time the charge dropped to 1% it had been playing video non stop, screen constantly on, 45% brightness for 6 hours 10 minutes. Sounds quote impressive eh?. But wait, that last 1% kept going and going and going totally defying what you would expect out of the last seemingly remaining 1% or so of battery charge. Past 6 hours 20 mins, past 6 hours 30 mins!, buy the time the battery died and the tablet shut down that last 1% seemed to have lasted a good 45 minutes and the total time the video ran for was an amazing 6 hours 55 minutes on constant offline video playing. Near enough the full 7 hours battery life per charge the manufacturer claims it can last for.
That's pretty much a full hour more than most of the test indicated I would ever likely get at the most. These results will probably mean another similar test will be required to verfy this 1 as being accurate than an unlikely fluke.

For what it is worth I phoned up and they said it would work. It had vat back on shelf label.
Return it if it doesn't, there is a small window to do that even if you opened it and had it delivered.
It depends if they say when you log the cashback claim if it is valid or not I guess.
I bought two, I will be annoyed if they don't!
Also worth noting Currys/PC world is the only place that sells it atm
And while trying not to sound like dave9946 (though his reviews are legendary) it is also worth knowing that whilst it is mentioned in the FAQs it does not seem to be in the T&Cs. Which suggests its not actually true and they are trying to put you off

Academic for me as the £20 code has expired, but I'm sure I read somewhere that you don't get the VAT back if you've used a voucher code. Hope it works for everybody. I'm still considering this as I missed out on the o2 refresh Nexus 7 deal.

16 Nov 14#514
Hoping the VAT back works as i was overcharged at first then the stupid guy refunded the whole bundle and re-priced it correctly so hope lenovo are fine with it.
Also a serious question to you guys who already have it regarding the battery is that I've noticed once the battery goes below 15% after a minute or two a warning shows up and the battery DROPS to 0%!!!! Its so so so annoying!!! Hope someone has something to say about this if not this thing is going back for sure! Anyone else had this problem?
dave9946 to muktessh
17 Nov 14#516
I suppose it depends what your doing when this happens and if the same thing happens when watching video?. But whatever I very much doubt this should be happening like this as I've certainly not noticed it here. But I mention watching video as last Friday I got about 45 minutes of video watching out of that last 2% of battery charge which was rather odd.
dave9946
17 Nov 14#515
With the vat back offer I don't know about others but my receipt states "coupon" for the £20 off than states any kind of offer. So I fail to see anything on the receipt that Lenovo can use to refuse the vat back?. "Coupon" I assume could also mean as part payment a gift voucher, a gift card or 1 of the several high street vouchers you can use in such stores.
ShaunnyBwoy
17 Nov 14#517
Hmmmm... it's a slight concern with that, thinking about it. I'm hoping in the last 2% of battery, we're not completely depleting the battery, as that will damage it in the long run. My first thought was that it would give users more of an urgency to charge if the battery reports to be running low, and if it is the case rather than depleting the LI cells, then it's rather clever.
Time will tell.
dave9946
17 Nov 14#518
The thing is, at what point of that last 15% should the charger be plugged in?. When testing on Friday I got about 4 or 5 warnings about the battery level once it reached below 15% that I noticed. But I never thought that letting it totally die could damage the battery in the long term?. But in saying that barring a handful of tests I doubt I ever will be letting the battery totally drain down to many times.
But the notice I got before the battery did die when testing on Friday was something about the battery was now empty and the tablet will now shut down. And if fact rather that simply just going off due to lack of charge the tablet auto shuts itself down in the correct manor as if I physically shut the tablet down myself. So possibly still a slight charge to protect the battery even when there is an auto shut down due to an empty charge?.
ShaunnyBwoy to dave9946
17 Nov 14#519
Typically, if you can see the shutting down screen before the battery finally dies, it might be okay. Mines has died a few times, but I wasn't around to see if this was the case. Generally, the batteries should be topped up, so there's always plenty of juice in them.

I just installed a newly released update (build number TABS8-50F_S000164_141103_ROW) and it appears the DPI scaling setting has been changed. Fonts and icons are much bigger and easier to read. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have noticed this at times especially with video but with no light sensor and no adaptive screen setting that I can see I would hope this would go away with an update or I'd be having words with Currys. I didn't mind the scaling before although some text and menu elements were tiny. I think the update has improved usability and most importantly battery life, as before it I thought the battery life was pretty dire which compromised the whole package. It does seem to have resulted in the OS not really taking full advantage of the high resolution screen and some elements like the copy and paste menu do look horrendous.
I'm hoping Lollipop does come relatively soon and brings all this together and we'll have a nice little bargain here but failing that root and custom roms could unleash it's full potential. It still doesn't seem to have come out in many places or even have many reviews yet.

Well I'm lodging my vat back claim tomorrow as its now been 21 days today I bought but want to give it that extra day just to be sure they don't try to claim its the day after that counts as day 1 as it was later in the afternoon I bought. Yeah, I know it shouldn't make any difference the time of day bought but just piece of mind so they can't reject the claim on any such basis. Will be well chuffed if I and the rest of us get the vat back as it will make this tablet a even greater bargain and buy.
By the way, still no problems with the brightness for me and always seems fine. But I have set my brightness level to about 45% so might not notice any issue as much anyway. But also hoping Lenovo are working on and getting the Lollipop update ready for this tab.

Ok more boring testing news, running tests again after the recent update to see if anything has changed battery charge life wise. Well not really any noted changes video playback yet except I wanted to redo some offline video streaming testing after last weeks offline test gave what I feel to be an amazing constant 6 hour 55 minutes odd of offline video streaming from a stated up to 7 hours per charge manufacturer claim.
Same offline conditions this time, just above 50% volume and about 45% brightness. But this time I used a 720 hd film file. Last weeks offline test was only a dvd quality 750mb file, but this file was a 1500mb 720 hd file. I knew I'd be highly unlikely to get anything like the same timed result as I was playing a file double the size of last weeks test and of a higher resolution to. But despite that I still managed a decent constant 6 hours 20 minutes of offline 720 hd viewing before the battery level shut the tablet down.

Loved this tablet, great screen and so easy to hold. Had to return as it really struggled with playing TV content downloaded to watch offline. Think the iplayer app and 4OD apps are not 100% compatible as content would play then stutter and freeze before crashing the app...not great when you travel a lot and want stuff to watch. Also started to have a few battery issues where would take forever to reach 100% charge then suddenly plummet to zero and switch itself off... hopefully they can iron out the gremlins as it deserves to do well... If anyone is interested in a leather flip case (magnetic close and auto off) plus 5 remaining screen savers for an S8 then will be happy to sell them on... looks like I may go the Samsung route where there are enough out in circulation that the apps are all fully up and working.

If you want to quick fix for the latest screwed up update they pushed to change the resolution similar to 960 by 460, follow the below instructions:
1. Root the tablet as per the provided link in Post #547
3. Open up Root Explorer, navigate to system-> open build.prop -> go down to where it says ro.sf.lcd_density="Number here prob 320" and change the number to 240 -> click save and reboot.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything that goes wrong with your tablet, ensure to only change the field specified in the build.prop otherwise you risk boot looping.
pjjames55
22 Nov 14#559
Rooted mine using the method above and set the lcd density to 160 but this caused a boot loop.
Restored mine back to and earlier version of the rom, re-rooted and this time set the lcd density to 240, this time no boot loop and the display is back to how it was before the last update. Hopefully they will have a lollipop update soon.

I've noticed a few games and apps seems to lock and close at random. It doesn't happen to often and doubt its the tablet as such as I've had the same issue with at least 2 other tablet brands in the past. The only downside with android, loads of different hardware configurations etc is bound to cause some issues and that is the only thing the ipads have over android.
With the vat back, it will be interesting how they will do that on my receipt as it sates the price at £149,99 but states the £20 off as a £20 coupon below the price. I guess it will depend on how they see or class a coupon as there is little way they can check or confirm if it was a gift card, gift voucher or a part credit from a returned item etc.

I got mine validated and accepted last Saturday in the end so pretty much just within there stated time limit. Like others also a stated long up to a 4-5 week wait for the actual payment!. Seems a little crazy to me to take 4 weeks to make payment then 5 days for the transfer to show!. Thought account to account transfers were instant pretty much?.
I guess we will all get the vat refund more to the end of those 5 weeks than the more reasonable 1-2 week wait. Still, an extra what, £20 back?, for this £130 tab will sure make it an even better buy.
By the way, any news on the Lollipop update yet for this tab?.

Just a question for you guys, im starting to notice my tab doesnt keep charge for very long 1-2 hours and when it gets to 20% it drops to 0% straight away. Also when i put it to charge it charges slowly at first then jumps from 40-50% to 99% in an instant. Anyone else had this problem?

26 Dec 14#622
Yes loads have in this post. I have too after just going giving 2 to my sons. I have reduced brightness and done a software update. Will also download a battery App to manage usage. Waiting to evaluate after a couple of charges.
Had: it too long to return it
spacemanzx
26 Dec 14#623
You've not had it too long if it's faulty. I'd say keep them at least until the (hopeful) lollipop upgrade and if it doesn't improve you can return it within 6 months as faulty where the onus is on them to prove it wasn't an inherent fault.
rolstherat
26 Dec 14#624
I went in on the 23rd to exchange it and they said as I had it over 30 days they could only send it to be repaired on a 28 day turnaround. Not the thing to do on the 23rd Dec eh. I did test it when I got it briefly!, but I was setting it up prior to wrapping.
I have to say Currys customer service is rubbish

Any advice please
I have got 2 battery on, but not changed the default settings except adding the screen filter, reduced brightness and installed latest software update, and but I used up 48% of battery in 1hr45 of you tube streaming, does that sound low? What else can I do?
Thanks

28 Dec 14#626
hi, I find that the info displayed for the battery life is not very good. It is not linear. I find that I can get over 5 hours of streaming hd video. I also find that the last 10% lasts very long. I do tend to keep it on charge every night and it has never run out of power yet. I am not sure if it is software, hardware or just the charger unit but the charging graph seems to be differing rates at different times. I have no real problems with it as I keep it well charged.
Hope this helps.

4 Jan 15#630
That is interesting, actually have to return mine tomorrow as the screen has been having issues for some time - fading stripes that go across the screen depending on how it is rotated (as I am after 30 days looks like I will have a first experience of the dreaded Currys PC World customer service).
rolstherat, could you possibly share what Currys told you?
rolstherat
4 Jan 15#631
They offered a refund or replacement on one as the battery was not lasting long at all, I bought 2 for my kids for xmas. Then they said that there were non left in the country and they were unlikely to be getting any more in as they have been marked for discontinuation. But they said this was not uncommon as lines can change up to 4 times in a rolling year.
I went away with ideas on how to test it further with plan to take it back, but was able to order another from them online, so I can definitely get a refund now and have a replacement.
Thats about it really

May be nothing, but like a couple of others ive now also noticed a drop in battery charge\usage in the last week and its becoming more notable. With just a couple of light games (Hay Day & Coin Dozer) and half hour of surfing ive gone from a full charge to 66% in less than 1 hour. Still not done the most recent update yet, will do that and run a couple of new video tests for battery charge times compared to my original and take it from there. Also im noticing 1 side (battery side or graphics chip side?) of the screen can get hot to the touch which is also concerning, but will keep an eye on things over the next few days.
As for returning it for a refund after 30 days, think its pretty much **** for currys to say no refund has to be a manufacturer repair outside of 30 days. Sales contract is between customer and retailer and NOT the manufacturer and therefore NOT a manufacturer issue to deal with via the retailer after 30 days but 100% a retailer issue for at least 12 months. I love pointing these things and the sales of goods act to companies etc when store staff try to blag refusing a refund or replacement over a refund. Pretty sure on a faulty\failing item (even after 30 days) that cant be replaced that even a store credit not can be refused.

21 days for Currys actually. After sales customer service is not their strong point. Or prices. Or expertise.

I have been really concerned about the battery life, 2hrs on some apps, 4 hrs streaming over wifi, having tested it on a number of occasions
Now I know you get what you pay for and these are seen a great value for the spec not that I know much about tht sort of thing. But I did not find out the battery strength, whch looks quite poor.
I sppek with Lenovo and they said that 2hrs was reasonable for an entry level tablet. I think its a case can you live with it like that. Not sure teh scope for a refund, but the product now seems discontinued.
Can anyone advise on the best settings to use in the 2 battery App please?
dave9946
9 Jan 15#639
Not to sure on the 2 battery app myself as ive more left it on the default settings myself. But my screen brightness is set to about 45%. Sounds very odd if Lenovo have said 2 hours battery life per charge is acceptable for an entry level tablet. On face value this tablet is a couple of levels above an entry level tablet. Argos Bush tablets are entry level and claim 4 1/2 hours battery life, and probably give at least 3 hours+ for general usage. This tablet is somewhat above entry level and claims a 6 hour battery life so should give about 4 hours general usage per charge minimum easy I'd say.
My previous tests in the early days with video playing gave 5 1/2 hours to 5 hours 50 minutes playing 720 hd video with wi-fi switched off. So if that has now dropped by any notable level after less than 2 1/2 months then it sure does indicate a batery issue. But some early issues I had indicated 1 problem with mine MAY have been connected more to the wi-fi and connected running in the background apps etc draining the battery may have been the cause than the battery itself.
Problem is at what point can you claim a failing and faulty product against the original lasting charge against manufacturer usage claims?. Currys would no doubt claim "so what, 2 hours is reasonable". But against a claimed 6 hours per charge and if a person has noted a drop in battery charge by as much as 50% in less than 2 1/2 months usage?. A gray area, but I wander how the sales of goods act applies when a product technically still works but gives more like 1/3 of the claimed battery charge and you report a failing battery issue?.
But going to run an offline video test to so on my tablet at least.
dave9946
9 Jan 15#640
Offline video test has given me 5 hour 50 mins of constant 720p video playing, so zero change in battery life sinse Octobet when using offline for video viewing at least despite online usage giving a reduced battery life in the last week or so . So whilst I've had similar issues as some with battery life, in my case at least, the issue may well not be directly to do with the battery itself or soley the battery but more other factors, probably related to the wi-fi in 1 way or another.
Maybe people could switch the wifi off and see how that affects battery life using apps and games not needing the wifi?. Or go to settings and apps and force stop all the games and apps that whilst you close still seem to remain open in the background!. As often these games and apps are probably still connected to the internet and sending tablet info and data from your tablet to the game and app developers. What, you never realised that most games and apps require you to allow the developers full access to most things on your tablet as a condition of download?. That could certainly affect battery life if such games and apps are connection junkies chatting with developers etc, but by no means certain of cause.
Heat issues for me again, the top part of the tablet (the Lenovo logo end) continues to often get rather hot which I'm sure it never used to?.
rolstherat
9 Jan 15#641
By poor app usage battery life was while wifi was off as it was when the kids were in the car. Closing apps does seem a problem as they seem to be on in the background, but persuading the kids to force stop is not so easy

I bought a genuine Lenovo folio case for mine. The site I bought it from had all the colours that the tablet came in. At under 20 quid posted, was a bit of a bargain. Nice rubberised inner that holds the tablet at differing angles and it also has wake and sleep when opened or closed, even came with a screen protector. Bought it from http://www.alzashop.com/ and arrived in a few days.
Love my tablet and does what I wanted it to do with ease. Just waiting for my cash back and I'll be a happy bunny having only paid £107 for it, bargain.

They also claim something called Infinity Screen, meaning like the iPad Air 2 and such, the screen is bonded to the covering glass. Whether this is the truth I don't know but it looks fantastic and feels as close to the touch as my iPad Air 2 does, so they've done something right.
Lenovo is also doing VAT back on purchases from Currys so brings it down to a measly £107 - https://lenovo-offers.com/uk/en/pages/winter-vatback/

With vat back it's 107.
Why would an 8mm think 8 inch tablet make any difference to one that was 10mm thick. I always wonder about how much better battery life I could have got with the thicker tablet, though obviously a bit heavier.
https://lenovo-offers.com/pages/winter-vatback/qualifying
I can see a picture of the equivalent case for the S8-50 on the Lenovo UK page for the S8 - under accessories - but no official part number etc yet..So, if this becomes available I would definitely recommend if you want a good compromise between protection and bulk.
Stick to ARM, Intel are still a few years away.
Well at least they won't mix their tablets up by accident. Doesn't seem like this is THAT much better anyone, this chip seems to be roughly on par with the Snapdragon 600.
If the battery life is better than the Hudl, it could be a winner. Also interested to see how those front facing stereo speakers perform.
Shame SD card is limited to 32GB on this and the Hudl.
Anyone know what the Lenovo launcher is like? how close to stock? Also what are Lenovo like for firmware updates?
This is nicer looking and will perform better though.
Yes there's a casting function in the display prefs
work in progress, not finished mod.
Of course Lenovos own website usefully doesn't have detailed spec
Where are the people saying it has no GPS getting this info from?
silly business people with no minimum sense...
Just had a check on xda-developers and there doesn't seem to be a forum for it, will owners of this therefore be stuck with whatever Lenovo give them?
I'd love to jump on this, but that's stopping me!
PS - OP does it have GPS or nay?
Regarding ROMs - it's very new so naturally there's very little happening. It's a popular chipset though so it may well have some in the future.
I wished I'd picked up the Yoga 10 HD+ but this could be a decent alternative.
It's a real shame because I'd love to give this a go, but I just think it'll be severely hampered by Lenovo's OS that I'll regret replacing my N7 (2013) with it.
I'll pass for now, hot for those who don't care about custom ROMs etc. though.

if you were talking about the nexus 7, the answer would be a certain "yes" which is why despite being a year old, it's still a better buy for some people.
NVIDIA Shield is a great replacement for the Nexus 7, as it has most of the hardware the Nexus 9 has.
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/tablets/3543872/lenovo-tab-s8-hands-on-review/
It comes with a 64-bit chip and yet a 32-bit operating system. There is no doubt they have done this in preparation for Android L. So I would be confident in saying Lenovo will release Android L 64-bit for this device.
You linked to the older A8, which is not Intel.
I'd be very surprised if this didn't get Lollipop. Its probably more of a when it'll get it and Lenovo are a pretty good Company
Few free Apps as well.
Hi this link: http://www.gsmarena.com/lenovo_tab_s8-6681.php
Suggests it has GPS and can take a sim card. I'm guessing this gsmarena link is misleading?
Thank you. I was hoping that someone would have some experience with both. I have the A1-840 FHD and it has 2GB ram. Unfortunately it only comes in white but unlike the Lenovo it is closer to stock android.
1-(1/1.2) = 1/6.
Conflicting posts on thread.

I am hoping to get 2 Hudls for the kids for Christmas. I'm going to stick to the plan because of the Hudl's child safe profiles, bright colours and accessories but mainly because we have enough Tesco clubcard points to boost them and get the Hudls for half price (£65 each).

You only really need an hdmi if you're gaming, otherwise use a chromecast....
"12. Payments will only be made to the individual who has purchased the product and whose individual name appears as the recipient on the proof of purchase invoice."
Last time I bought something instore from PCWorld/Currys I just received a normal, nameless receipt. They might try to decline a claim for that. Something to bear in mind.
Update: Should be fine, see comment #218.
Was concerned over the screen size for this but the full hd screen suits the size very well and far outweighs a bigger lower res screen and looks so much better than my partners few weeks old Lenovo 10" 1280x800 tab.
Mine does not have a sim card slot - the one I got from Currys is a S8-50F which does not have data/voice (there are other models which do).
Mine does not have an HDMI slot, just a USB one.
Android Lollipop will revolutionise the universe. It is the best Android release since Android releases. The best at taking your data and putting it on Google servers since Google were invented. The best at taking all your information and selling it down the river since dodgy as f*ck looking CEOs were invented. But I digress. Don't buy this tablet, until they announce an Android Lollipop release. It will change your life.
Specs and price look great though...
How does it stack up to other smaller tablets?
if you had made/ do make a complaint about his incompetence (not very managerial like), you could have got an S8-50 for less than £107!!
thats what i was just thinking...but i've yet to see an Android upgrade incentive
U need to compare it with retina 2.

Q. Can I take part in this promotion and use a discount code?
A. Unfortunately not.
Do you think this refers to a discount code on the Lenovo website?
There's not that much in them right?
When I had a go of the Hudl2 in Tesco a few days ago, I found its home screen to be very laggy when swiping left to right. The app drawer was smooth enough, but the initial lag was more than enough to put me off.
And after reading these best buy reviews I think I made the right decision http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-s8-50-tablet-16gb-black/8731458.p?id=1219362863870&skuId=8731458
Looking forward to any reviews from people who already bought Lenovo, how warm is it getting during gaming? Currently I class my Hudl as extra heater - good for winter but annoying
Enter code IPADTAB20 at checkout for home delivery orders. For reserve & collect orders please ask in store.
Not available in conjunction with any other offers.
Hurry! Offer ends Tuesday.
Going to check if there is an update for mine later as I never checked last night as so still has the firmware it was shipped with that may well have been updated by now. Otherwise if shut down again when I get back home I'll be calling currys to report a problem to see what they say about returning it as a defective unit.
Iv'e had mine about an hour, just setting up, youtube and a couple of games and all seems well. Very nice screen and sound. Def needs another launcher put on it though!
Just wanting to fully run the battery down now to give it another full charge to better test battery life as I was concerned how much the battery life dropped overnight, from a full charge to 32% after no more than 40 mins use and left idle overnight.

I think if the available firmware update does not fix any issues being had most folks are jumping to simply returning for a refund, might be something to keep in mind.
if its only been on 5 minutes then its not much actual power, if its been on hours then its a big jump

Hooe this helps from someone who set out to buy lenovo but was very very happy to part with the extra £80....on a side note you only have till Tuesday to get the extra £20 off
im going to go looksee this levono tomz, in this throw away society why spend more as itll only end up in the dump soon, as it stands itll do me proud
Another poster managed to remove the back cover if he/she still about is there much room did you notice, and do you fancy a trip to your local diy store.
Really interested to hear how widespread the crashing problems are among other users.
On a side note, has anyone managed to obtain the Intel App Pack?
http://appack.intel.com/curryspcworld/#/home?lang=en
I keep getting 'Invalid Master Key' errors, having tried with and without the leading zeros on the receipt.
I have used both and the Hudls speakers are also a lot poorer.
But value for money the Lenovo.
About crashes try to disable app called "Security HD" since I've done it yesterday Its all better
Only one small problem is that I cannot delete the icons from home screen or remove any bloat ware on it.
Very fast, very sharp screen, great price.
This promotion is valid Sept 25th 2014 to January 29th 2015. Claims must be made by March 5th2015.
There are 3 Intel App Pack options available, depending upon which product you buy:
a. Tablets: All Intel based Android tablets & Android 2-in-1s are eligible for the Intel App Pack - Tablet
I've put in a support request, will update when I hear back.
Also on the Sky go tablet app the voices are way out of sync.
I have reinstalled all the apps but none work properly.
I may return my A8-50 and buy an S8-50 if they work perfectly.
very snappy performance and the screen is great
well worth the money and i struggle to see why youd pay more for the same size screen
Its a shame my A8 is flawed because its a 3g version.
But to be fair the website does state "For reserve & collect orders please ask in store".

Thanks for cover link Aspillite. Anyone found any in different colours? Will be easier for kids to differentiate, less chance of war breaking out in house. Thanks in advance.
scroll down to 'box contents' clearly suggest earphone and its a small thing but seems very misleading. Ps thanks for your replies guys.
Settings - Wifi - Network (look for 3 dots) -Advanced - Sleep (something like that).
I would like to get a 64 gb card, but I am a little concerned about it working
Found the user and maintenance manuals on the Lenovo UK website. It lists the hardware specifiaction on page 23 of the maintenance manual. Hope this is useful.
Lenovo S8 50 Manuals
I want to buy one today and have emailed Lenovo technical support asking whether the OS will be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop which I understand is to be released sometime this month. I also asked whether it has dual band Wi-Fi which would be a bonus but not a deal breaker if it doesn't.
Quibbles:
Microphone doesn't work,
Sticky residue on part of screen,
Sound profile cant be saved properly so annoying vibrations when typing etc.
Managed to turn off the typing sounds and vibration by going into the keyboard settings and doing it in there rather than the sound profile.
Not sure if this is what did it, but in the Google app (you'll have to install this) settings, I went to Voice settings and put a tick in the Bluetooth headset box even though I don't have one. Mic works fine now (even after I went in and removed the tick.)
Are there any known fixes or workarounds to force the BBC i-player etc to play via a browser or a compatible browser that will work to play full hd programming via the browser itself on full hd tablets?.
Should be an update available to take you up to a Build Number of TABS8-50F_S000146_141010_ROW
Waiting for my tablet to arrive. Will see if any of the issues mentioned in this thread appear
Also apps like 2 Battery helps a lot, I set a night mode where the wifi goes on only every 4 hours starting from midnight, it stays on to do a sync and then it goes off again. So at 8am my mails and stuff is there
I'll now wait for the price of the Nexus 9 to come down before considering an upgrade.
That's no use to man nor beast.
Switched off Wifi connection but charging just as pathetically - only up to 37% after an extra hour.
One question though, has anyone figured out how to use the lock screen wallpapers for the main homescreen?
To clarify, the reserve and collect doesn't qualify for the discount, but pay and collect does. So does paying in store for home delivery. clear? As mud...!!
Does anyone know how much available memory there is out of the box?
The font size issue is also present on the Tab S 8.4, as its down to the resolution. You could root it and change the PPI but beyond that it's an Android scaling issue.
Probably down to individual store management and there inability to pay attention to internal memos etc. As some stores and currys customer services have confirmed the offer applies instore too.
I eventually got them to apply the discount, although it took 3 of the team to figure out how to apply it. There is a bar code that they have to scan to deduct the £20.
The Argos one is the older version A8-50 and not this newer S8-50 that has a faster processor and better screen and it weighs less as well
I posted a question above #394 about the screen dimming to 50% after playing games for about 40 minutes and the tablet getting hot at the rear.
I won't be making the same mistake again!
I have not heard a thing back from them yet.
It does not feel right
On the other side, you generally get misinformed customers who don't do enough research on the purchases they make.
There are three options under mode
1. High accuracy, use gps, WLAN & mobile networks to determine your location
2. Battery saving, use WLAN & mobile networks to determine your location
3. Dvice only, use gps to determine your location
No other problem at all besides that after running the update. And even if knowing all this in advance I'd still go and buy another if we needed 1.
not fussed either way but its always nice to get something for nothing, id be more upset if i didnt get the vat back
The other problem is updates are not always reliable, for instance I have the older version of this tablet the A8-50 3g and that worked brilliantly until the last two updates and now two of my most used apps (tv catchup & filmon) no longer work even after deleting and re-installing them hence the purchase of this tab.
Just sharing my opinion and experience. The guy at currys himself was cursing their system saying they weren't given enough training to deal with problems. Tried the one they had on display and it was snappy, quick and awesome display hope its not misleading to the actual one.
I had to return my S8-50 because the screen was dimming and flickering when watching movies and playing games so now I cant use skygo again on my old tablet and have to wait a month.
But seriously as far as I know not many tablets can mirror to a chromecast at the moment.
Thanks
I bought two on Friday. One is fine. The other one smells bad, and then develops random screen flashes.
I brought it back to Currys for a refund.
But all the currys employees insist that I have to reproduce the faulty for refund!
It's not my fault that the pad is not working properly.
How the hell am I supposed to spend all night staring at the bloody screen to capture the mini seconds splash?!
From what i read you can just quote this, and they should accept that. You probably spoke to one of the monkeys that knows nothing about consumer law, or electrical equipment
Currys/Pc world are the pits when you have a fault.
Personally in future I'm going to avoid that shop like the plague.
Thanks, anyway.
I am.glad I was able to record the flash.
I'll have a second look tonight and if it's as bad as I remember I'll try and sort out an exchange. If they won't play ball I'll have to DSR it.
Mine has been returned to pc world because of a dimming and flickering screen fault.
DSR laws should be applied to high streets if they want to restore lost trust, but since gov are a backward bunch, they appear to be strengthening the likes of Amazon with their actions (or inactions). First parking charges around Town Centres, and then tax laws and consumer protection regulations not being applied.
And yes, it will go away after 2-3 days, for my case.
Just leave it at some ventilated area, it will go away faster.
havent used it long enough to give it a proper test.
ordered a case from fleabay and a 3M Vikuiti MySafeDisplay Screen Protector.
meant to be a xmas present to myself but finding myself wanting to use it now.
The same sales guy when I bought it served me again.
He asked his supervisor, didn't bother to look at my video and refunded me directly.
I insisted to show him the video, not wasting my 2 hours staring and some serious video editing on my phone.
thankfully i don't have a smelly tab but the wife thinks im stranger than normal
Its still unopened, but I have been thinking that an HDMI port is actually quite useful to me.
I will probably wait a few weeks to see if lollipop appears for Hudl2 or might break the bank for a Z3 compact
But a decent pack all the same and GT Racing 2, wow, worth the near 800mb download and the free game credit code is going to be very handy.
Also is there any way to return to standard google launcher? And do I have to have root to uninstall the security software? Thanks!
I couldn't get the code to work in GT Racing 2 but not sure if I mistyped it or was trying in the right place?
Haha... You'd think you would redeem it on the google play store, since it goes through that for purchases.
I'd be more wound up if they don't pay out on the vat back offer myself as that aught to be some £24.50 odd if paid on the £149.99 price tag.
I guess it could be said a minimum of 3 hours and upto about 7 hours usage per charge. Video streaming via BBC i player etc, I, think I'm looking at about 4-5 hours for me. But charging, I have found it to be ok myself.
think i'll try out hudl2.
However it is buggy as anything with constant freezes and just has a feeling of coming short of true good manufacturers despite a bargain price. Any thoughts if this will be better ?
But in the absence of any reviews properly testing battery charge usage I guess its down to us to test.
in real world testing i can get 5 hours no bother so to me its good but like most things you do get what you pay for and higher priced tabs will often give better battery life, for the money, this is great
Edit: Thank you for posting your findings though. I'm still curious to find out the results from the non Wifi playback test. I'm personally experiencing roughly 50% reduction in battery after about 3 hours on screen time from normal use (browsing the web, reading the news etc).
Will then move onto gaming tests later in the week when I have time as that will need constant attention and usage.
you must have better things to do with your life than sit and test the battery life in various scenarios before then reporting back to an online forum in intricate detail, no one cares, hate to break it to you
Edit: just to make the power button last longer.
And real life out of the factory typical consumer conditions test results are certainly more reliable & scientific than manufacturer laboratory test conditions that seldom tend to recreate real world typical use conditions that far matter than lab test conditions that the consumer is never likely to be able to recreate in the home. Which do you think the average consumer and owners of this tablet would find must useful?.
And I do have better things to do with my time thanks for asking, any testing I have done is when I have had spare time and based on issues and concerns raised by others as well as myself in this thread that they have had concerns about if you care to read than troll. Its about actual owners giving actual real world feedback.
mind you it could have been worse, least he didn't say 'well what do you expect its not an apple'
Anyone got a view on how sturdy it is? Bash proof?
Which suggests its not actually true and they are trying to put you off
Also a serious question to you guys who already have it regarding the battery is that I've noticed once the battery goes below 15% after a minute or two a warning shows up and the battery DROPS to 0%!!!! Its so so so annoying!!! Hope someone has something to say about this if not this thing is going back for sure! Anyone else had this problem?
Time will tell.

I know it is only one benchmark but it seems the Lenovo S8 50 is quite a bit better than the LG G Pad 8.3.

I'm hoping Lollipop does come relatively soon and brings all this together and we'll have a nice little bargain here but failing that root and custom roms could unleash it's full potential. It still doesn't seem to have come out in many places or even have many reviews yet.
By the way, still no problems with the brightness for me and always seems fine. But I have set my brightness level to about 45% so might not notice any issue as much anyway. But also hoping Lenovo are working on and getting the Lollipop update ready for this tab.
you'll need google translate, and you need to register to download the files
there is a twrp recovery on the Russian site but i have had no luck installing that yet
theres a custom rom here http://lenovo-forums.ru/topic/9941-lenovo-s8-50lc-tablet-%D0%BA%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F-%D0%BF%D1%80%D0%BE%D1%88%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%BA%D0%B0-life-v01/
but until i get twrp for my stock backup im not flashing custom rom
but it says the rom will flash without twrp?
but you may lose root after update but you should just be able to root again
Same offline conditions this time, just above 50% volume and about 45% brightness. But this time I used a 720 hd film file. Last weeks offline test was only a dvd quality 750mb file, but this file was a 1500mb 720 hd file. I knew I'd be highly unlikely to get anything like the same timed result as I was playing a file double the size of last weeks test and of a higher resolution to. But despite that I still managed a decent constant 6 hours 20 minutes of offline 720 hd viewing before the battery level shut the tablet down.
1. Root the tablet as per the provided link in Post #547
2. Download Root Explorer here
Restored mine back to and earlier version of the rom, re-rooted and this time set the lcd density to 240, this time no boot loop and the display is back to how it was before the last update. Hopefully they will have a lollipop update soon.
If anyone else runs into the same problems, details for downloading a recovery image can be found in the link below..

Anyway, are others only claiming from the £129.99 or £149.99?. I claimed from just the £129.99 as I noted mention in the detail of excluding other items not part of the item or promotion and feel they might use that to reject the entire claim if I tried on the full £149.99 and leave me unable to resubmit the claim to reflect the paid price than asking price. Not worth the risk for a few extra quid.
Ps: the apps are actually open but wont show as i tried it with twitch and the stream was on as soon as i reopened the app. Thanks.
My receipt showed that I got the Curry's discount so this didn't cause any issue with regards Lenovo paying the cashback.
Smoooth and painless. Well done Lenovo

Your Lenovo VAT cashback claim has now been validated. You will receive your cashback payment within 28 working days of receipt of this email. Please allow up to an additional 5 business days for bank transfer processing.
wow takes up to a month for them to pay you..
Hope this helps as they did accept my pdf receipt
They usually do. But in my case, they only had attached conditions for return pdf file. Must be a system glitch.

none of these numbers can be found anywhere i look?
any tips?
all sorted now, didnt know there was a winter one, i was using a generic one i guess
thanks for that
I guess we will all get the vat refund more to the end of those 5 weeks than the more reasonable 1-2 week wait. Still, an extra what, £20 back?, for this £130 tab will sure make it an even better buy.
By the way, any news on the Lollipop update yet for this tab?.
Had: it too long to return it
I have to say Currys customer service is rubbish
I have got 2 battery on, but not changed the default settings except adding the screen filter, reduced brightness and installed latest software update, and but I used up 48% of battery in 1hr45 of you tube streaming, does that sound low? What else can I do?
Thanks
Hope this helps.
rolstherat, could you possibly share what Currys told you?
I went away with ideas on how to test it further with plan to take it back, but was able to order another from them online, so I can definitely get a refund now and have a replacement.
Thats about it really
Hi Mate
Do you use headphones, do you think that could be making a big difference on battery life?
Cheers
Love my tablet and does what I wanted it to do with ease. Just waiting for my cash back and I'll be a happy bunny having only paid £107 for it, bargain.
