I went through a very convuluted process of complaints to the customer service team and was put in a mega shunt between various departments including VIP Sales all based in India. Ended up writing a complaint letter to Michael Dell and Tim Griffin (CEO/VP), and then the matter was picked up by the exec complaints dept (again in India), who despite yet another protracted engagement were only willing to offer 10% discount on a new order - which meant that the XPS 12 was still way out of my affordability.
Dont waste your time, energy and sanity complaining. Its really not worth it. Indian staff are driven by process which they love soooo much and are unwilling to break out of. And the indian exec complaints team are so up their own a**e they think they are doing you a favour and are the gatekeepers to god! I can say this as a British Indian with large amounts of experience dealing with off-shore teams and indian businesses. Dell it appears have chosen India as a back/front office esp for customer service as the whole experience is so frustrating and exhausting that eventually you give up and succumb to their demands.
Best option is to learn and move on. I shant be purchasing from Dell again regardless of how good an offer it may be. Any company that fails to invest in a live order system that only lets you buy what is in stock, and is willing to cancel so many orders and upset potential customers doesnt deserve my hard earned cash!

Reviews are a bit mixed but most complaints come from the solid keyboard and it's responsiveness but there's plenty of praise for the screen (image and responsiveness) and style.
If you're wanting a tablet that becomes a laptop on the odd occasion, it'll do you very nicely.
If you're wanting a laptop that becomes a tablet occasionally, you might get frustrated with the keyboard.

If you use Office, this, but if you're planning on typing a lot, the keyboard is not great so maybe neither.

The keyboard seems to be the big issue, similar to the Surface keyboard, no moving keys, just touch sensitive, definitely an issue for some people, i suppose could use a separate usb keyboard. Perhaps the screen, carbon fibre and metal construction make up for it.

I own a Nexus 10 tablet and a HP 14 Chromebook. However, I was thinking about giving both of them to my girlfriend, as her laptop died and she doesn't own a tablet. I think that the Dell XPS 11 would be a fantastic replacement for both (despite not running Android). It definitely justifies the price point though, in that respect.
Also, I'll be dual-booting Ubuntu (or an equivalent Linux OS), which will be extremely useful, for many reasons.

I tried one some time ago..
Keyboard is better than first gen surface solid keyboards, but not as good as the touch type ones.
Its ok if you just want to enter a web address but writting much is tough..
That said it acts as a fantastic case cover for the screen. and the performance from the unit is fantastic.. I would MUCH rather own this that say the new Ipad Air 2.. Ok its heavier but its a fantastic unit when used in two hands.. And for those wanting one handed tablets surely a 7, 8 or even 9" is way better.
Highly recommended if you don't need a digitizer..
I now own a Surface Pro 3 which I love and just use on screen keyboard. But I require a pen.. So hence why I did'nt keep this.

21 Oct 14#114
I know absolutely squat about laptops, is this one worth buying? I've read that the keyboard is pretty useless but could you not attach an external one? I have a budget of around £350-£450 and wouldn't mind getting a laptop that can turn into a tablet, but if not then a proper laptop which has at least an I5 processor as a Lenovo one I have right now is incredibly slow.
Another really general question, is it worth buying electrical goods around this time, or would prices go down further pre-Christmas (or Boxing day) or should I wait till the January sales?
Thanks in advance guys
hospital349 to yuiodf
21 Oct 141#115
For home use, you could most definitely purchase a bluetooth keyboard and use it instead. Carrying around both the XPS 11 and a bluetooth wireless keyboard, would be pointless and diminishes the point of it's overall form factor and it's portability though.
You could hold out... as Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are on their way (in November) and then Christmas and January sales, thereafter.
I base the overall heat of this deal on original price, overall savings, build quality of the product and the fact that the XPS 11 could be used as both your daily laptop and tablet. The 128gb version is priced at £351.90, which is still cheaper than most other 10"+ tablets (whether it's a Surface, Surface Pro, Samsung or Google Nexus tablets). This is before you take into the consideration the amount of storage space you get (which is usually 32gb-64gb in other devices), the overall build quality, or the fact that it doubles up as a laptop. Also, for the budget-minded, saving between £500 & £600 (depending on which model you buy), really makes you feel like you're buying something of great value.
I don't think it's a bad deal, whichever side of the coin you look at, even if it isn't the most perfect of bargains, to some.

Really surprised to not see a single person mention buying this for the quality of the screen, that would be my main reason for buying this over almost any sub £800 laptop.
Lots of negative reviews on this product at the time it came out but I think most were a hate for the keyboard and frankly at it's original price you could have bought a MacBook Air. At this price and for something this small and light (with this screen) I don't think there's much that comes close.
Mentos to deeinlondon
21 Oct 14#126
Not much consideration given to screens on this forum unfortunately. People tend to focus heavily on the silicon despite many gaining little advantage from yet faster silicon when they haven't been CPU bound for years :/
At this price point you will NOT find a screen to come close to this in any laptop. And that should make this a no brainer, but IMO it's crippled by the keyboard and weight. As a laptop the keyboard isn't upto scratch. As a tablet it's too heavy, despite dell suggesting it's primarily USP is as a tablet. IMO anything approaching 1KG+ should be considered primarily for laptop use and therefore DELL should have equipped it with a decent keyboard.
Devices like this are almost there in achieving convergence, but I think most (if they are honest) will still be better off sticking with discrete devices.
At RRP I wouldn't contemplate it, but at this price despite the above I'd be tempted to roll the dice despite the above advice, DELL should take it back worst case. However be sure to properly appraise the keyboard and weight (in tablet usage) within the return window.

Mentos to LadyEleanor
21 Oct 14#131
And then when you find its too heavy you can remove the case and keyboard or get a lighter case, you can't do that with this. I use mine without a case (just a sleeve for transport) and at ~600g it's borderline for extended use in the hand.
Review. Mainly positive, the keyboard being a compromise to allow that tablet operation mode. It really depends if you want a PC or a toy, this being PC.

Going to wait on a deal for something similar with the 4200 cpu in it as I would quite like to do a bit of gaming on such a device. This looks like it just doesn't cut it for gaming (for example, it scores half of what the 4200 variant scores in 3dmark).
If you have no intention to play games on it though, this looks like a good deal.

Hmm, then you'll end up with the same issues Surface has in cooling/powering a 15W (25W turbo) TDP APU and killing both battery life and hitting thermal limits.
The Y or Core M are still far more powerful than anything in 10-11" form factor - I think you're comparing PC games with iPad/Android equivalents that are not the same complexity level to require the same levels of resources...
Maybe something like an updated Alienware M11X? But even R3 was 2kg, had a loud fan, and 64Wh battery did not last long gaming...

Same, ordered last night and still no confirmation email. They advise to wait five days before contacting them
For curiosities sake, I contacted Dell, through their chat interface, just to check how long it would be before receiving a confirmation email, as well as a delivery estimate. They said it usually takes 24hrs-48hrs, from the initial purchase time, before receiving this information.
I hope this gives some of you a little peace of mind. :smirk:

Good info though I'm not sure you need to remove the battery to replace the mSATA, maybe as a precaution to disconnect the power source. Also SSD is usually hidden by a sticky black label.
For those feeling brave, replace the thermal paste with something better (after cleaning CPU/heatsink), it has made a big difference to XPS 13, 14 and E74xx Latitudes I played with. It may also allow increasing the turbo TDP short/long term levels and time in turbo without hitting thermal throttling/shutdown.

I ordered mine on the 17/10 (only with the 50% + the 10% VIP). Order was confirmed on the 20/10 and the estimated delivery date is 12/11 (more than two weeks). I think all of you that are ordering right now be aware that you are going to wait a lot. I ordered the 256Gb model.
I also read plenty of reviews: bad keyboard, slow (compare to others like surface).
But the screen compensate everything else and has other advantages like 2xUSB, full HDMI, easily accessible (for me the biggest problem of surface)
Hmmm, putting my small petty hat on, I think this should be coincidentally.... if it were being ironic your middle name would be something like "Sitley"

Actually it works pretty well, sims 4 would be pushing it, but it quite happily chugs along on many modern games at medium to low settings. It will struggle at that resolution but there are chocks of indie titles it will happily play.

24 Oct 14#239
If you look at the German hukd pages you will see exactly the same situation as here: orders placed on 16th or later have either been cancelled or are still in pre-production status. Nothing seems to move. Upon enquiry in 'chat' the reply was that DELL had encountered a bottleneck in production. We just have to wait for the cancellation or a resolution of the bottleneck...

Has anyone that has spoken to dell been given refund details? If they really hold our money for a month I will not be happy.
hospital349 to DealFinderBG
25 Oct 14#241
Spoke to Dell about my money being refunded... Technically, Dell never took money from my account to begin with. My order was cancelled and no money was taken.
However, when a payment is made, for a short time before the money is transferred to the respective merchant, the money is readied and put on hold by the bank. When the order is cancelled, the bank keeps that money held for a certain amount of time, before it clears back into the account.
In my case, my account balance reads £415 more than my cleared funds. The funds exist, but the bank is holding them until the cancellation verifies and the bank processes it, so that it goes back into cleared funds.
Right now, the only option is to wait. It's annoying, but there's not much to be done. Being trapped in a financial limbo is annoying. I blame Dell, not the bank. Dell should've really honoured the deal. If manufacturing and parts was the issue, they could've at least put a 1-2 month delay on those orders and gave customers a choice to wait... rather than right-out cancelling them, without notice. I read on another page, that someone received an email that explained that they didn't have enough UK/IRISH Keyboards to manufacture devices for every order. Again, I would've waited patiently, if it was as simple as a stock issue. Too late now I suppose. Unfortunately, won't be purchasing from them again.

Took me about 10min to get used to it. Basically I need to hit it harder than I usually would (I prefer that rather than adjusting sensitivity) and that's about it.
It is no match to a regular keyboard when typing a lot, but it was never suppose to be.
If I'm going to type really a lot, I'll use a different machine or hookup other keyboard, but it's perfectly adequate for casual use, e-mails, a small documents etc.

So finally opened mine and it is a fantastic machine.
Love the screen and the build quality is excellent. Fairly straight forward and simple to setup.
I bought it for what it is, a laptop/tablet hybrid. I will mainly be using the machine with touchscreen and the keyboard is good enough to enter small amounts of text, like typing emails, web addresses etc.
If you need to type much more then you would need to do it on a different machine.
I'm pleased with this purchase, especially at this bargain price!

I'm jealous of you all. Mine went into production, literally this morning. I ordered it on the morning of the 21st.
However, my delivery date has now changed to the 24th of November, the day I go on holiday (the main reason I ordered this). Do you think they will upgrade my shipping type, so I get it a day or two before hand?

Had mine a couple of days now and can honestly say it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.
Quick tip for the so-called dodgy keyboard:
Press the F10 key.
Set the slider to the lightest touch sensitivity possible.
Press okay.
...and it should work perfectly. Cheers :sunglasses:

Does the lit power adaptor tip mean anything, does it change colour?

Nope, it's always lit when plugged into the wall.

Can anyone advise as to what the viewing angles on theirs are like? Mine is like a TN panel with the colours fading as soon as you move it off the vertical or horizontal.
And the screen generally looks a bit washed out with no punch to it
luke997
15 Nov 14#308
It's an IGZO panel, as in ipads. Angles not as good as IPS, but a lot better than TN.
Color reproduction is very accurate, but you can adjust it for more punch in the graphics properties.
Catman99
15 Nov 14#309
I should add that I bought mine on eBay when Dell cancelled mine. I think its defective as the video reviews show the angles are very good like you say. Maybe my screen was broken and replaced with a TN panel or just defective. Sometimes eBay is not so good.....

Thank you OP...
Anyone bought a case for it yet?

Thanks guys :-)
I ordered a couple of cases, however this Belkin one I ordered looks the most promising for my needs:
Its only £5.50 and has a compartment at the back to carry the charging cable. Will see when it arrives.
Would be good to know what others have ordered...

For my experience I don't like the ones with a zip. They scratched some of my devices in the past.
Does someone know if is it possible to set battery charging thresholds? as the battery is not "easy" removable I would like to set thresholds to increase battery lifetime.

I received the Belkin one I posted earlier. Its excellent, the internal is lined with a fleece material.
It opens from the top, if you were to place it in portrait like an envelope. There is some internal lining the protects the Dell from getting damaged on the Zip.
The external pocket is handy for storing the charger. For £5.50 you cant go wrong.

I have this issue as well, button seems to be pressing itself, albeit as time goes, less and less often. Maybe glue curing or something.
I got round it by disabling windows key in the registry.
Anyone has an issue with the volume rocker? One side is OK, click activates it, other side requires significant pressure, and there's no clicking feedback, like stuck microswitch or something.
It's not big deal as I don't use it, but wanted to find out how others have it.

DELL XPS 11 Wont Turn On
Anyone else having major problems just trying to get your Dell XPS 11 to turn on?
According to the BIOS the battery is fine but more often then not the XPS 11 won't turn on at the first try - sometime it takes 10 attempts to turn it on.
This seems to be a common problem with all DELL Laptops - so much so they have made multiple videos on YouTube to say the problem is Static and to remove the battery for a while BUT you can't do that on the XPS 11
a_zerty_guy
19 Apr 16#337
Hey there,
if you manage to turn it on, can you try to launch the ePSA dignostics mode, by pressing F12 when the logo appears?
Most issues with this model were linked to a faulty samsung mSATA ssd, but you can't rule out a faulty power issue of course.

26 May 16#338
So my DELL XPS 11 won't turn on - I was told under EU Law All Goods are covered by 2 year warranty
I have contacted DELL and they're trying to tell me the Laptop is from the USA so only 12 months applies
Any help?
The website said DELL UK, The laptop actually has written on it Limerick Ireland and there's a UK based address on the order form
I think they're taking the mick to say it's from the USA and so 12 months only. I'd never have order this laptop if I thought it was coming outside of Europe, simply for the fact I might have to pay import tax on it.

For the 256gb SSD model, you're saving nearly £600.
I watched an hour of reviews. Just to summarize what you're getting and reviewers general experiences:
XPS 11 comes with an i5 haswell processor, 4gb RAM and an Intel HD 4200 dedicated video chip. It's a relatively powerful machine, especially for for it's price range.
Screen is of magnificent quality. Beautiful Quad HD, with superb viewing angles.
Solid state drive = Faster booting times, as well as speedy reading/writing, etc. They're generally much more expensive to purchase and recommended, over all other hard drives.
Stereo speakers, situated both sides of the laptop's base. Sound quality is great, especially for it's size.
The device is really thin and ultra light (for a laptop/tablet hybrid).
360 degrees flexibility. Can be used as a full fledge laptop, or tablet.
In tablet mode, keyboard and trackpad sit underneath and are disabled.
Keyboard has had mixed reviews, due to design issues. It's a touch keyboard, without clicky-touch feedback. Keyboard isn't ideal for folks who want to type a lot (big essays, word processing, etc) - Dell have stated that this is first and for-most a tablet and secondly, a laptop. That being said, this device runs Windows 8.1 and takes advantage of Windows 8.1 legacy applications (not restricted to tablet apps).
Gaming is moderate. I viewed somebody playing Mass Effect 3 on it (Playstation 3 graphics) and it was chugging along quite well on medium-high settings.
Battery life lasts between 6.5 and 8 hours, depending on usage, due to the processors low power consumption capabilities.
The build quality of the device is phenomenal, in all of the reviews I read and watched.
There's a SD card slot, for additional storage. I own a 128gb SD card, which I purchased for £30.50, if you fancy a storage upgrade in the process: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Komputerbay-Secure-Digital-Extended-Capacity/dp/B00CX8SJDM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1413843635&sr=8-6&keywords=128+gb - I highly recommend it, despite it's obscure branding.
Don't let this deal go. If you're on the fence, get off it and buy, unless the keyboard design is a deal breaker, which it might be for those editorialists and writers, out there. A bargain, nevertheless. :innocent:

This ruins an otherwise superb laptop.
Was about to order the laptop as it ticks many check boxes.
If you're wanting a tablet that becomes a laptop on the odd occasion, it'll do you very nicely.
If you're wanting a laptop that becomes a tablet occasionally, you might get frustrated with the keyboard.
Or register for the VIP club for a 10% off code which will probably work out better.

Thanks - the one I fancy is £649 so 10% off will be nice.
Other person who replied is guessing rather speaking from experience.
Will be crap for latest fps games but that isn't what you asked
iPads are good for internet use & games.
Windows tablets are a compromise in terms of fluidity / ease of use but give you access to professional software and peripherals.

256Gb model is
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&l=en&cs=ukdhs1&kc=&oc=cnx9p03
The 'slow' processor seems to get some good benchmark times when running more modern tasks.
I would take the overall scores with a pinch of salt though as the reviews were written when it was nearly 3 times this price!
Amazing machine
Edit: Following this link it actually does work. Cheers! http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&l=en&cs=ukdhs1&kc=&oc=cnx9p02

Do I really need it? That's another question :P
But at least they took it back - I hear even worse with other manufacturers...
As others have stated quite clearly......the keyboard is terrible. No point in getting something that requires so much effort to use.
Very solid item
This, nexus 9 or alternative?

Can get the i7 version for £790 instead of £1079 currently.

Decisions!
EDIT - Then I read this http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/ultraportable-laptops/53266/dell-xps-11-review/page/0/1
Also, I'll be dual-booting Ubuntu (or an equivalent Linux OS), which will be extremely useful, for many reasons.
Might buy it try it out, send it back if im not happy, £20 charge which is ok.
Another really general question, is it worth buying electrical goods around this time, or would prices go down further pre-Christmas (or Boxing day) or should I wait till the January sales?
Thanks in advance guys
Lots of negative reviews on this product at the time it came out but I think most were a hate for the keyboard and frankly at it's original price you could have bought a MacBook Air. At this price and for something this small and light (with this screen) I don't think there's much that comes close.
XPS with these sort of specs (screen especially) for £351... Absolute bargain, blows out of the water most of the gear even at twice that price.
Dave
Review. Mainly positive, the keyboard being a compromise to allow that tablet operation mode. It really depends if you want a PC or a toy, this being PC.
Yes windows 8.

£478 plus delivery though there is a 5% off code....
Might as well buy the £350 version an upgrade later.
Preliminary Ship Date: 17/11/20141
...I keep watching this date slip. glad I got my order in early!
Got a Note 3, 9" Nook hd+ tablet and a older XPS 1530 laptop with T9300 . Hardly use the nook (note 3 does the job 95% of the time) and the 15" XPS is a bit of a beast though its just browsing/downloading at home mainly... Will i miss the 15" screen going to 11"???
If you have no intention to play games on it though, this looks like a good deal.
Lets see if it goes through
Lots of info, including service manual.
I hope this gives some of you a little peace of mind. :smirk:
For those feeling brave, replace the thermal paste with something better (after cleaning CPU/heatsink), it has made a big difference to XPS 13, 14 and E74xx Latitudes I played with. It may also allow increasing the turbo TDP short/long term levels and time in turbo without hitting thermal throttling/shutdown.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
any 1 got config link for 256 gb HD?
Thanks in advance.
just wondering if you got the 256 gb link
I also read plenty of reviews: bad keyboard, slow (compare to others like surface).
But the screen compensate everything else and has other advantages like 2xUSB, full HDMI, easily accessible (for me the biggest problem of surface)
Only joking though!!!!
Definitely expired even if the configuration link is still live

no cancelation .... (yet)
Dell and Scan appear not to have a real time or even daily automatic stock system.
Shocking in this age for companies selling IT equipment.
I rang Dell and got the old Indian call centre shuffle.
Dell didn't even get their own phone number right on the cancellation email!
Anyone had any cancellations like this from Apple?
If apple put an offer like this they will have so many orders that they will have the same problem as dell.
I used to order quite a lot of dell stuff in the past but stopped after they lost my order. Doesn't seem like their systems have changed in years.
Will have to see how Ms office runs on an iPad air.

I found this out (and much more), from this link: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20140522190735AAAwYCW
I imagine they'll tell me it's been cancelled, but an email just hasn't been sent.
Did you check the "Classic Site" (tab bottom LH) ?
I actually had never seen that tab before...and I run a business through paypal...explains a lot
Thanks

Feedback from Germany: those who ordered on 16th around 15:00 hrs (14:00 GMT) moved to 'in production' with a delivery date of 7/11. Some who had ordered somewhat later were informed of a production stop due to missing parts, viz. shortage of display panels.
Also got an invoice as they've charged my card.
hopefully those whose orders haven't been cancelled should start to go into production soon.

Machine in fantastic, this was best laptop deal I've seen/had in a long time.
It is no match to a regular keyboard when typing a lot, but it was never suppose to be.
If I'm going to type really a lot, I'll use a different machine or hookup other keyboard, but it's perfectly adequate for casual use, e-mails, a small documents etc.
I forgot to mention about the screen - totally agree with you, it is absolutely fantastic, blows out wife's XPS 13 1920x1080 out of the water...
However, my delivery date has now changed to the 24th of November, the day I go on holiday (the main reason I ordered this). Do you think they will upgrade my shipping type, so I get it a day or two before hand?
Quick tip for the so-called dodgy keyboard:
Press the F10 key.
Set the slider to the lightest touch sensitivity possible.
Press okay.
...and it should work perfectly. Cheers :sunglasses:
And the screen generally looks a bit washed out with no punch to it
Color reproduction is very accurate, but you can adjust it for more punch in the graphics properties.
From those of you that have recieved it, any idea what that means...
Thank you very much for this perfect deal ukhan!
Thank you OP...
Anyone bought a case for it yet?
I ordered a couple of cases, however this Belkin one I ordered looks the most promising for my needs:

Its only £5.50 and has a compartment at the back to carry the charging cable. Will see when it arrives.
Would be good to know what others have ordered...
I've ordered one this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck%C2%AE-Ultrabook-Envelope-Protector-Compatible-13-3-Inch-Grey-MP1300/dp/B00JO70ZDW
It's double price (£12.50) but has really good reviews, felt outside and soft flannel inside. And and matching extra bag for the charger.
Does someone know if is it possible to set battery charging thresholds? as the battery is not "easy" removable I would like to set thresholds to increase battery lifetime.
I ordered this one from Amazon Marketplace for £11.50 in the used section... but its actually brand new
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004WIZBH8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
Its for Macbook Air but it fits just about... The quality is really good...
It opens from the top, if you were to place it in portrait like an envelope. There is some internal lining the protects the Dell from getting damaged on the Zip.
The external pocket is handy for storing the charger. For £5.50 you cant go wrong.
do you have the issue with sensitivity being reset when powering on from standby?
Also, yesterday I experienced this weird issue where the windows touch button on the glass pressed itself each time I closed the laptop - a re-start seemed to cure it but anyone else had this issue?
I got round it by disabling windows key in the registry.
Anyone has an issue with the volume rocker? One side is OK, click activates it, other side requires significant pressure, and there's no clicking feedback, like stuck microswitch or something.
It's not big deal as I don't use it, but wanted to find out how others have it.
Anyone else having major problems just trying to get your Dell XPS 11 to turn on?
According to the BIOS the battery is fine but more often then not the XPS 11 won't turn on at the first try - sometime it takes 10 attempts to turn it on.
This seems to be a common problem with all DELL Laptops - so much so they have made multiple videos on YouTube to say the problem is Static and to remove the battery for a while BUT you can't do that on the XPS 11
if you manage to turn it on, can you try to launch the ePSA dignostics mode, by pressing F12 when the logo appears?
Most issues with this model were linked to a faulty samsung mSATA ssd, but you can't rule out a faulty power issue of course.
Any legal recourse?
