Ok, first of all I am Romanian therefore biased. A few considerations, in no particular order.

I live the UK but grew in Mioveni, Arges county, where the massive Dacia factory is. My father worked at Dacia for something like 35 years and was always proud of this. I know the factory intimately.

The factory itself goes a long way back (1966!) and the area is all built or related in one way or another to the car industry. Since being taken over by Renault, everything (and that really means everyting) has been modernised; all build processes are similar to the ones used in any other modern car factory.

The romanian car market is composed by almost 50% Dacias. There is a reason for that: cheap to buy and to service, parts are peanuts, plentiful and the cars are built to take the often rough roads. Most of the petrol engines are built to be converted to LPG for only a few hundred pounds. Almost ALL the taxis in Bucharest are either 1.4 petrol Logans converted to LPG or 1.5 diesels. Simple and reliable (wait to see 1.4 petrols run all their life on LPG with 500k km!).

To conclude, I think it is unfair to say that they are bad because they are built in Romania; however, the RHD Dusters are built in India and the discussion is different (see the Dacia forums for more info)...

Yup, buy a 20K car, drive it off lot, lose 5-7k right away, then another 30% after 3 years, OR buy a 9K car, do the same maths, you will come out ahead as long as it's reliable and cheap to fix.

Ain't the badge more of a fashion statement? But tbh skoda is backed by vw which a company who have a good reputation and known for German reliability so I guess it ain't as bad as having Dacia backed Renault who are best known for... Good reliable electronics... Good engines... Comfort... Reliability... Good build quality and material... Oh wait no they are not known for any of those xD (owned one and trust me you don't want one unless life has been bad to you and you are struggling so badly)

There might be value in the bottom of the range model and never selling it!

The worst thing about it is that this a relatively old car, it was first pressed in to service in 2006 or so, it was a third world car to start with and now its an old emerging market vehicle.

I have been on the Dacia test days and over all I would have thought a punt at one of the van to mpv type efforts that's a newer and had better engines might be worth a look in if you were considering a mode costly model.

If you have travelled a bit you might have seen this badged as a Lada, Nissan, Renault and probably all sorts of other things over the last 8 years!

Lot of car for the money, but I have to say it's a damn ugly looking bus of a thing. Still hot though, if you are just after an A to B car to chuck the family in I can't see how you could beat this.
£300 option for Sat Nav isn't too shabby either (when you consider others charge £600+ for it on their cars), adds bluetooth, steering controls, USB connection too.

I have a Skoda Octavia VRS, and its the best car I have ever owned! Estate boot is massive, the car is not overly wide, great for a family as its full of cubby holes and clever ideas... oh and it shifts too, leaves many other cars behind if required. Internal build quality is good, with a German look and feel, OK its not Audi quality, but its not real cheap plastic by any means.

Bought from new (end of the MK2, Blackline) it has been great, one gripe is the soft paint work - need to sort something out with Garage.

I've got 2 Skoda's myself - a 2010 Fabia Sport and a 2002 Fabia estate, both 1.9tdi engines, no DPF either. I easily get 50+ mpg on short runs and long distances, best being 63mpg on an average speed of 80mph. Cracking cars, reliable and value for money for money !

I can vouch for that, had a grand scenic which has done fewer than 60,000.miles. Three failed window regulators, complete dash failure, clutch costs minimum of £1000, cam belt had to be changed as they're prone to failure over 50,000 miles, drain holes in wings blocked flooding it, changing a bulb is a very time consuming. Car creaks and vibrates. Truly awful

£7k for a new car is a snip, no matter what brand or the perception is. Myself I like more performance and trusted car manufacturers but with warranty etc you'll be well covered with this for a few years. Would make a decent family car (checking safety ratings ofc) for those who need one sharpish and need extra space. The horsepower won't matter a jot if your more concerned about your family and not getting off first at the lights. Gotta be hot. Any chance of a new Audi at the same price?...
Oneday77
10 May 14 #50
Even if you treat this like a van and trash the crap out it. If it's worth nothing in 3 years time, it's lost under £200 a month. Less than several lease deals that have cropped up here.

I've slagged Dacia before, hate the Renault parts bin idea. However an estate at this price for a growing family on a tight budget, what can go wrong in 3 years?
toonarmy2000
10 May 14 #51
they are jointly made by renualt and nissan they have the nissan qashquai engines in them i am interested in one myself but the mileage what they are stating is in fact not true, you will be roughly getting 55 mpg depending on how you drive the car.

VW group have taken the best bit off the audi and vw and incorporated them into the skoda all you have to do really is look at the no 1 taxi in the uk and theres your answer Skoda never owned one yet but still looking. The second hand value says it all really I was shocked at how much they hold there price. If you look at the superb its got all the Audi extras fitted as standard. Great cars cannot fault them. People just relate to the 1980's but even then they was untouchable on the rally circuit there fault then was they were rust buckets.

When I read all the negative comments I wonder how many of these people have actually looked at a Dacia Logan or even driven one?. I bought a 1.5 diesel Logan in December 2013, done 3500 miles, the car has never missed a beat and does anything from mid 50s to 76.mpg. OK the car does have one or two annoying rattles but nothing serious, can anybody say that their car which cost perhaps double doesn't have the same?.You may go out and pay 15k to 25k for a car with a badge that everyone will recognize but after say 3 years when you go to trade in what do you get ----- peanuts probably, so when I trade in my Logan what will I get compared to someone with the badge? probably peanuts too,but I will have lost a lot less than than them, so who is the mug? I rest my case!!

I'm in total agreement with 63logandriver. As already mentioned, this debate went on and on the last time a Dacia was posted. I own the Sandero Diesel model which has now covered over 10,000 miles without a hitch. Also spoke to the local Dacia dealer about oil/filter parts and he commented that he had not heard of one bad report about any of the Dacias taken in for servicing. As I commented in the last Dacia debate everyone checking out this deal should ONLY listen to those that actually own one and knows a bit about the marquee and not the absolute uninformed numpty's that that post an utter load of useless drivel. In fact this website is beginning to hack me off with posts from contributors that don't own the product and therefore make some outlandish statements about the products posted. Fair play to renault but sick of seeing dacia's everywhere. They're bland. They're cheap but everyone knows it, and I'm not saying image means anything with a car but I think this is a step too far in terms of literally making a car a workhorse. They shouldn't just be to go from A to B. Cars are meant to be fun! Did the UK really, really need another brand with the sole marketing point of cheapness?

10 May 14 1 #86
I'm not interested in one of these cars at all ... I just read all the comments to see if anyone was going to refer to the Zafira!

I've no idea how they compare, but I bought one of the zafiras for 9,500 in December 2012, and the same car, same reg, used, is still selling for £8,500 from the dealers, but without the 100,000 mile lifetime warranty, year's insurance, year's road tax and year's breakdown cover I got -- and servicing has cost a grand total of £79 from a main dealer.

Just in case anyone's interested, since there's some good Zafira deals around now, and they're for the 1.8 rather than 1.6 that I got and for a bit more there are diesels this time as well, there weren't when I got mine.

Something to compare anyway, and might be interesting in the light of some of the comments above about depreciation.

Also, a quick thumbs up to Bristol Street Motors in Crewe -- they gave me the black metallic paint, full set of floormats, and 1/2 a tank of fuel, all included.

Finally -- the zafira I got came without a spare (just a pump and some foam), but the space for the spare wheel is still there underneath, and a local garage got me the fixings, the tray, and a spare Pirelli with alloy from a breakers and fitted it for £140 all in.

Hope that helps someone!

Cheap cars can be a false economy, I bought a 1996 Daewoo nexia saloon (horrible car) , 18months old for £5k, parts got quite expensive when the car was discontinued. Ended up selling it for £600 in 2001. Depreciation of this car was high. Compared with the 2003 renault clio I bought for 4500 in 2006, parts are still cheap and still runs well (drives better than my company car Astra) I could now get £2k for it privately (only 31k on the clock)

I'd personally avoid these cheap foreign cars and go with a 2nd hand known brand that has been mass produced so parts/aftermarket parts are cheap - from experience.

As the owner of a Skoda Yeti, I can say that all you have to do is look inside a VW to see many of the same bits.
I even watched a film the other day where a VW Passat had the same Sat Nav unit.
I could have spent another 8 grand to have a VW with the same spec, the VW would have also deprecated faster too and cost more to service. Can't see the point of that.

Neither can owners who responded to the Auto Express Driver power survey

Sometimes it's best to speak from experience, you gain more credibility that way.

You obviously know nothing about Dacia. This is a new car with the latest Renault/Nissan/Dacia floor pan and the latest engines that are all eco compliant a lot of other companies use Renault engines and that includes Mercedes. Whilst the design is not going to set the motor industry alight it's pleasant and inoffensive and keeps the cost of spares down ( £375 for a replacement headlamp, not with a Dacia. ) and this is reflected in cheaper insurance.
The name game in different countries is used because of what sells in their market, i.e. in Russia Lada sells because that is what they produce and all that the Russian working class could buy, but the days of making different quality cars for differing markets has now disappeared now that Renault is at the helm.

think you should look up dacia rusty on google. one had rusty arches at 3 weeks old

buy it.keep it 3 years till the warranty runs out.give it away. still only cost you £45 per week.cant be bad. sell it after 3 years and a little bit bonus.....

11 May 14 #103
If that's your plan, you would be better off leasing something at least half decent.
j4p
11 May 14 #104
yes but if you lease it there is no bonus at the end of the deal. and quite often charges are incurred for damage etc.

Well I have the diesel Sandero version and its been fantastic to drive and own. Apart from having a couple of fuel pipes replaced due to a cable routing error at the factory end its been as relable as you could wish in a car. My front tyres managed almost 25,000 but my back ones are hardly worn.Would have no hesitation in buying another Dacia model in future

The Indian built Dusters (which we get in the uk) do occasionally suffer from rust which isn't ideal.

I think the Logan we get is Romanian built and doesn't have the same problem.
63logandriver to Dr Zoidberg

Just thought I'd update my opinion on my 63 Plate Dacia Logan.Well, its nearly 3 years old and what problems have I had? --------NONE. I have just turned 27000 miles with no problems whatsoever, never been back to dealers for any warranty claims. Serviced every year with nothing extra needed. Had to buy 2 front tyres at 26000 miles so cant complain at that. I have driven regularly up and down m6 to visit relatives and never missed a beat, always returning anything from low to high 60s mpg. As for the annoying rattles which I first complained about they have gone!!. So as its coming up for 3 years old and 1st MOT I intend to trade it in, what will I be buying? BMW, Audi, no I am going for another Logan!!!
soldierboy001
11 May 14 #107
That was a problem on some earlier Indian built Dusters that has been rectified and as I understand from customers on Dacia forum all cars affected were either rectified, exchanged at no cost to customer or a full refund given. Try getting that service from Ford etcetera.

To all you pretentious gits commenting on this, it's £7K!! For that amount if money you are not getting a brand new VW, Range Rover or BMW. As for reliability it's brand new and there is this thing called a warranty, if it breaks down you bring it back and they fix it. Don't forget Renault also own Nissan, one of the most reliable cars going. As for the legendary VW reliability the one I had, that cost over £25k didn't like moving out of the garage and was back at VW more times than I care to mention. It was also dull to drive and not that fantastic to look at either. At least you know what you are getting with these new Dacias! Get over yourselves people, these cars are fantastic value for money.

My one concern is it's rubbish ncap score of only three stars I wouldn't put my kids in anything less than four stars plus from the side it looks **** my neighbour has just bought one and the inside is suprisingly well built I guess this would appeal to someone who has no interest in cars so not for me mind you I think the sandero looks alright I would go for the cheapest one they do something appealing about a good honest basic car even though I drive a disco and a five series

You know something?
This is what I like about hotukdeals..people who actually give feedback on their personal experience with a posted deal.
So thank you 63logandriver, your personal experience is much appreciated.
It will be interesting to see how much trade in value you are given for your car.
Keep us updated, and again, thanks

Similar experience on my 4 year old Dacia Lodgy except I got 35,000 miles from my Continental front tyres. What make are yours?
63logandriver
20 Sep 16 #114
Hi thanks for the response, my tyres were Continentals too 185-65-15. when I got them replaced the tyre fitter stated there was still 1000-1500 mile left but as I was going touring I didn't want to risk anything happening.
