Heads up... Just had the latest B&Q leaflet come through the door. The 430, 340ER and 370 models will all be reduced to £87 for 3 days only (24th-26th May).

Amazing price for the 430 which is usually £176.

I've got one of these, paid a lot more than 87 quid though :disappointed:.

It's a good lawnmower, the box fills up pretty quickly, but it cuts the grass well and seems to have plenty of power.

Sickner, just got one of these last bank holiday for the discounted price of £125

My rotor doesn't not spin round freely. (or have i missed something on assembly) ?

Is this normal ?
Biker Jeff to InTheKnow444
21 May 14 #22
I assume you mean it doesn't spin freely when turned off..... if so, that is normal.
The motor will have some friction when its not switched on.
rellymr
21 May 14 #21
I've got one of those and the handle just randomly snapped last night as I cut the grass. Was only the 4th time I'd used it. Thankfully I've still got the box and the receipt so it'll be going back to B&Q for an exchange tomorrow.
Biker Jeff
21 May 14 #23
This is a blinding deal...... tempted to get it myself, even though my Rotak 34 is still working fine after 3 years.
The 34 has never really been big enough for my fairly large garden as well.
InTheKnow444
21 May 14 #24
thanks, I have a black and decker rotary mower which does spin freely, this one is very hard to turn when cleaning the rotor
Biker Jeff
21 May 14 #25
Its possible that your B&D mower may have a brushed motor, this is maybe why it spins freely..... The Bosch Rotak mowers have brushless motors, which are superior motors and maintenance free. A brushless motor does have a fair bit of friction when not switched on.

Edit..... saying that though, the motor shouldn't be hard to turn. You should be able to turn the blade with your hand with ease.

Razor_777
21 May 14 #27
Nah I've got exactly the same lawnmower (brilliant by the way!) - its very hard to turn the rotors. Doesn't seem to affect performance in the slightest.
Common Sense
21 May 14 #28
Does it have an option to mulch, like the Qualcast? Far quicker to cut, as it saves emptying grass box.
pcplod to Common Sense
21 May 14 #29
You can get a mulcher attachment as an optional extra. Can't remember how much they are but I think it was less than £20.00.
Biker Jeff
21 May 14 #30
I have the Rotak 34 and while you can feel the resistance of the motor, I certainly wouldn't call it 'very hard' to turn the blade by hand.
Maybe there's more resistance on the higher powered motors on the bigger Rotak's like the 43.

matt101101
22 May 14 1 #32
I do believe so :stuck_out_tongue:

Even so, it really is a fantastic mower; much better than the cheap, crappy petrol one it replaced. I looked at the battery powered version, but it was just too expensive for a tool which, in reality, doesn't get used that much.

22 May 14 #36
I bought one last year, the blade is quite 'soft' compared to Mountfield mowers, and the motor blew within 4 uses, COLD sorry, save you pennies, the reason for such a reduction is to shift them quickly
Besford to urban_junk
22 May 14 1 #39
Ah, YOU got the faulty one - we all wondered where it was!

Seriously - one faulty item under warranty (if indeed it was the product's fault) does not make a poor product. I don't think there is any other product on HUKD which attracts so much praise when it is listed. Mine is now into its 4th or 5th year and still going strong. I shudder when I think of the years I struggled on with a dreadful Flymo not realising such good products as this existed.

I bought the 370ER last year, didn't use it until this year, had trouble with the power switch cutting out and was surprised as Bosch are usually an excellent brand. I took it back last night and B&Q confirmed that the power switch was indeed faulty. They added that they have had more Bosch returns lately than ever before. They swapped it for the newer 370ER, it looks a bit different and apparently it folds up smaller for easier storage. I received a new receipt and will now register it with Bosch for a 2 year guarantee so I am very happy with B&Q's service. I am now, however, unsure about Bosch and hope that this decline in quality does not extend to their other products. I have always held German engineering in high esteem and hope that this is not a widespread phenomenon.

22 May 14 #58
i have a 16ft wide rear lawn,just done a quick caculation (16 x 305 divided by 430 ) that would mean
walking the length of the garden (30 ft) 11 times --- if i bought the 370 version it would mean
walking the length of the garden 13 times ------ so if i cannot get a 430 then a 370 is no great
hardship. ----- I have been using a similar design, an old Flymo RE300 which takes 16 runs,
so i would be happy with either.

The guy at B&Q said they would be the same,so thinking about it he probably meant as the
op said 'all the same price' and not all half price.
cockseye
22 May 14 #59
just reading the reviews for the rotak 430 and the 370 on the B&Q site the main criticisms seem to
be the flimsy grass box,the short lead and someone was complaining that the mower in the box
wasn't the same as the picture on the B&Q website, apparently there are 2 versions with the same
model number but one is inferior to the other ------- might be worth you checking these reviews as to
know what to look for.
matt101101 to cockseye
22 May 14 #60
The grass box is fine, a bit of a b*stard to fit together IIRC and it fills up quite quickly on the 430, but it's sturdy enough, bearing in mind it's only to hold cut grass.

I do have to use an extension cable to reach the back of the garden, but that's been the same with every electric mower we've had. No idea if the cable on this one is actually any shorter than the others.

I don't know anything about the different versions with the same model number, so I can't really comment on that.

I got one today  went in for the paint on offer, it wasn't there, but noticed that they had all of the prices market up put one in a trolley and then saw the chairs weren't on offer but prices were wrong way around, asked someone and they said the offers didn't start till tomorrow and they normally put the sale material up the day before?? Anyway they shouted at someone and they came over and said it did start today and they would come with me and put it through the till. Then they checked the leaflet and it was tomorrow  Girl on the till said she wasn't looking forward to tomorrow as she was the only one in and it would be manic.

They didn't seem to have many of the 430s but lots of the smaller ones, lots on show may be 30 of the smaller ones.

As its all of the models you could probably get one from John Lewis and price match.

Don't hold out much hope of getting one of the chairs, probably only had about 40 in store so probably wont bother.

Just been into our local store expecting mania but no. Dead quiet. Staff said it was very busy when they opened but no one at tills come 9.45am.....
Having said that I found the last Rotak 430 box on some very empty pallets. I always wanted one of these & I got the bigger model 43cm metal blade & 1800 watt motor.
Cheers Op have some heat.

Update 25/02/16. Very pleased with my 430. Very powerful 1800 watt motor (I guess in future they won't come this big in view of global warming) which cuts through long grass with ease provided the blade is sharp. The only downside is the metal blade is relatively soft so don't use the lowest cut unless your lawn is billiard-table smooth (or like me, you'll be replacing it.) Still an excellent buy!

I love it when guys like B&Q and Amazon go head-to-head in the battle to give this stuff away. I wonder if Flubit will keep it up now that Amazon have it on backorder. Bring it on! Bish bosh.

Just picked up a 430 for £87.. Very happy thanks OP

I feel for those who trecked to B&Q and queued in the rain at 7am. Ideas for what to do with a second mower that I didn't mean to buy but was finally too weak to resist, anyone? Shame it isn't the ride-on kind.

Just bagged one at Leeds store, 2 more left after mine but none on shelves. They're in storage so you have to pay, then collect next day.

Thanks OP √

24 May 14 #149
It is the Rotak 370 which is different to the picture shown on the B&Q website,
the photo shows the same design as the Rotak 430 but
i think it is the Rotak 37 which is sold on Amazon and Argos which is the same design
as the Rotak 430.The Rotak 370 is designed by Bosch especially for B&Q and
doesn't look as Robust.
(if you look at the Rotak 340 on the B&Q website, the 370 looks like this)

Edit:- After reading Biffo's post #152 , i am even more confused now.

24 May 14 #150
I've ordered off Amazon @ £87 but got a funny feeling they will cancel the orders. Wouldn't be the first time they've done that.
sreddar
25 May 14 #151
They often cancel orders you place with marketplace sellers (offer gets allocated to the wrong product) but have they done this with their own offers too?
Biffo
25 May 14 #152
The display model was a 370 ErgoFlex, a smaller version of the 430 but the boxes are all 370ER. Just returned mine for a refund.
cockseye
25 May 14 #153
I actually had the very last Rotak 430 (1800 watts) in my hands ready to pay,but changed my mind,it might have been the biggest bargain but too big for my needs so i gave it to a couple who had a 3 lawns compared to my 1 -------- I think i will go for the Rotak 37
(1400 watts) from Argos, alright it is £22-99 more but with £10 Argos coupon brings it down to £12-99 more but it will be to the
Rotak 430 design which i prefer.

Ordered 43ergo Saturday morning from Amazon and delivered Sunday morning at 9:30 and it's all setup and ready to go!

Tried Flubit with last weeks 34r for £69, but they dicked me around and cancelled my order due to running out of stock. So won't bother with Flubit again but glad i got this better deal, smokin hot!
cockseye
25 May 14 #155
I cannot find the Rotak 370ER on the B&Q website so was this a sharp practice by them to advertise the 370 Ergoflex
but substitute it for the Rotak 370ER for the promotion ------- this was what stopped me going for the 370 yesterday as
the picture on the box was not what i was expecting.
geordie7
25 May 14 1 #156
Just tried out the rotak 430.
In my view, no way is this worth the rrp of £170, although lightweight, too much flimsy plastic, and metal thickness of the tubular handle frame is a concern. £87 is about the right price for this.

This replaced a 13 year old Orion machine purchased from Aldi for £55. Just about all steel construction, heavy, one piece plastic grass box, and the tubular handles show no signs of weakness. Corrosion ( holed) through the steel base, but otherwise never given any trouble to this day.

Will see if the Bosch lasts 13 years, but I doubt it.

Just used my 430 on a large garden
More than happy with it
Grass box a little on the small side
Great mower

Had to make a few journeys & phone calls & speak to the store manger (long story about staff incompetence) but he managed to find us one hidden on a top shelf in the store  Very happy, great mower, great price!

430 sold out in Southampton. At £87 I would have bought one but they were gone in less than two days. Plenty of 370s left.
BSS1
26 May 14 #160
The 430 model SOLD OUT in all B & Q stores round my way. They still have 370's in stock for £87.
cockseye
26 May 14 #161
But the wrong 370's look at the photo of the B&Q leaflet on post #63 and they are not what are offer in the store.
Look for the Ergoflex handles as per the 430 model with the front black cowelling. The height adjustment is next
to the wheel and there are 5 positions, not 10. The grass collection box is in 2 parts held together with a red clip,
it's a little bit more flimsy than the one shown in the picture.

26 May 14 #162
Flubit have just cancelled my order. Absolute ********, won't get one for £87 now.
sreddar
26 May 14 #163
Sorry to hear that. Not the first time they have done this sort of thing either or so I hear.
Liverpool_Bear
26 May 14 #164
Thanks, it's alright. I rang them and got the spiel about "dependency on their suppliers" etc. They responded to my demand within two hours and I responded to their offer within 30 minutes. It then took two days for them to cancel my order, in the meantime B&Q ran out of stock and Amazon ceased price-matching. We're hoping to move house soon and will need a better lawnmower as our current garden is tiny, and we will have to upgrade the mower.
deanos
26 May 14 #165
Flubit also cancelled my order for the 40
eslick
26 May 14 #166
Wonder if they make some of these in china like the other models, our is tough plastic but grass box isn't as strong but then neither is the one on our old Flymo and suppose it's only to told grass. Wasn't too concerned about the handles until I tried to pick it up by the middle won't do that again. Ours was made in the UK. Good mower but 2cm cut is a little though for our lawn probably should have started with a higher cut before creating the tramline down the middle of the lawn
Liverpool_Bear
26 May 14 #167
Don't understand why it took so long. Had they cancelled on Saturday then I could have got one from B&Q.

Does anyone know which Lawnmower is better Bosch Rotak 430 Ergoflex or Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex currenty on Amazon for £99.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00SBN0OBS

According to Which.com Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex is a better Lawnmower.
HappyShopper
20 Apr 16 #172
Without knowing the criteria for the Which report, the comparison tool on the Bosch website suggests the main differences are a more powerful motor, larger cutting blade and bigger cutting box on the 430 so your choice will boil down to whether you have a need for the additional power - i.e. how big is your garden.

If it is average size, then the 370 will suffice.

However, if B&Q have the 430 on offer again this year for a similar price to the one in this deal from last year, I'd get that as the additional power can come in handy, regardless of garden size, when cutting really long grass.
