New current account launching soon, and you can have two of them, so 5% on £4000. Not to be sniffed at.

No direct debits or switch required, £500 a month pay-in.

Key features:

- 5% AER variable interest on balances up to £2,000**.
- No introductory offer period.
- Available to existing and new customers.
- Minimum monthly deposit of £500.
- No monthly fee.
- Register for internet banking, paperless statements and correspondence.
- Transact in branch, online or over the telephone.
- Maximum two accounts per person.
- Switching service available.

Challenging the competition....

- Some other banks and building societies may try and tempt customers with a ‘teaser rate’ only to take that rate away after 12 months. TSB doesn’t. It simply gives customers 5% interest.

- Most other banks demand a minimum monthly credit of £750 or even £1,000. The Plus account requires a minimum deposit of just £500.

- Some banks insist customers do all their banking online. TSB Plus account holders can manage their money however suits them best, be that in branch, online or over the telephone.

- Other banks require customers to shift their direct debits and standing orders over in order to open new accounts and qualify for the best deals. TSB wants customers to experience what it’s like to be part of this new kind of bank so is happy to let them ‘try before they buy’. TSB will then help people move as and when they are ready.

- Most banks limit their best deals to new customers only. The TSB Plus account is open to existing customers as well as new ones.

that's a good offer..

The only downside is 5% credit interest which means you have to leave the 2k in bank account with all your dd etc.

not really a downside if you have 2 grand which i have :stuck_out_tongue:

I don't understand why you consider 5% credit interest to be a downside? The main selling point of this account is the 5% interest. Think of it as a savings account rather than current account.

That's what I'm going to do. Put 2000 when I open each of them, set up an automatic payment that goes from my Barclays account to the first TSB account, then the following day they will be moved to the second TSB account, then the following day to the Santader 123 I also have and leave it there until I reach the maximum 20,000. Afterwards, I'll see what I can do to make more out of my money.

Does anyone know the rationale for needing to open 2 bank accounts to gain the 5% on £4K. Then mess about moving monthly deposits into an out of accounts. Same with other banks. Why can't we just have one bank account with increasing interest depending how much you save i.e. not capped.
I've had to open 4 accounts with different banks to maximise my savings and play this stupid game of DD shuttlec0ck

Dodgy maths perhaps? Should be £8.33 or thereabouts if you have a constant balance of at least £2k. Or, £100 per year per account.

This link shows some variance from what the original poster mentioned:

http://www.tsb.co.uk/legal/current_accounts_legal/plus_important_information.asp

1. There isn't mention of th einterest rate on the link
2. But it does say that interest is payable on a balnce up to £2500
3. It says that you need to pay in at least £1000 a month in order to get interest.

I think those existing customers with the Classic account with Vantage added might have to migrate to this new account if they want to. I can'tr ee TSB allowing a further two of the new accounts.

12 Mar 14 #19
If you will have an average balance of £2000 (ie £2000 in and £2000 out) then this one (or Nationwide FlexDirect, though 5% only for a year).

If you will be increasing your balance by £2000 each month, so you will have £2000 one month, a total of £4000 the next, £6000 the next, etc, then the 123 is better in terms of pure interest amount for the higher totals. A combination of the two accounts would likely give the best returns though.

the best about ISA is the It remains tax free for add long as you have the funds and if interest rates increase again you can do an ISA switch
BustaLinx
12 Mar 14 2 #25
I agree, but the smart move this year - unlike previous years - is to wait and put the money in an ISA at the end of the tax year, ie not until 2015, and earn better interest on those funds in the meantime.

I'll be opening two of these when they become available, but with full awareness that the "no introductory rate" is really no better than there being a fixed introductory rate, given that the interest is variable. Yes, they'll *probably* keep this account rate for two or three years (easier to hold as time goes by when interest rates start rising next year) but they could just as easily drop the rate after a relatively short time if they've miscalculated the attractiveness of this loss-leading account.

Not that I've looked but I imagine it would be hard to beat the Santander 123 account, what with all the cashback and 3% up to £40k

Why dont the banks stipulate that you also have to go into a branch and beg a bank teller for the monthly interest to be paid.

Rbs promised not to close last branchs in a town, but now they are.

My 1st account via internet banking was only activated today.
For some reason, the branch had to see photo ID for the internet created account (even though they opened one account no problem). The bank branch then lost (internet banking say never received / branch say the other people lost it) the photocopies of my ID. Took 7 or 8 phone calls to sort it all out and re-send photo ID only to have it activated today. Chances of that happening to anyone else is slim though  But was a pain. Everyone was helpful on the phones and agreed to call back, nobody ever did each and every time.

My experience has been essentially the same as yours. The Kingston on Thames branch lost the photocopied ID they took from me the day after I completed the online process. I called the helpline on 0845 835 7509 on 16th April to enquire why I'd heard nothing further from TSB. Raj took my details & promised to call me back, but didn't.

I'm not impressed. TSB can stick their account...

25 Apr 14 2 #128
Raj!!! Spoke to him myself - he promised to call back "when the account was activated". That was no use to me because I was calling as the account was not being activated as they had no ID!!! And as the bank sent the ID off over a week ago (and it arrives next day at internet banking), it was never going to arrive. It seemed a very difficult concept to explain to him.

I had to be the one to call the branch back up, back and forth it went. Internet banking refused to grant the application even though the branch had activated the other account. It ended up with me having to phone the branch saying this wasn't good enough, and I emailed the ID to the branch, who then authenticated it (since the woman had seen the ID before), who sent it to the internet banking people again.

Without calling all those times, I most certainly would still be in your position. It seems calling the direct branch phone number is better than the internet banking set up people. Make sure (if you know it) to state who you saw in branch.

Just saw the advert on TV tonight and knew I'd find a thread here. Thanks to the OP for posting and others for the info so far.

I've applied online tonight, account is open. As part of the application I could pick my username and set my password. From this and having the sort and account number confirmed I've been able to login and test sending £1 over from my other account. All seemed fine. Have just sent a larger payment (exact same saved details) and it's taking a bit longer to show up, hopefully all fine or my out going bank being 'over protective'.

What's the difference from what I've described above and my online banking being 'activated'? Does this 'unlock' features such as being able to set up standing orders/DD's etc, as none of the options to do this currently show for me? Thanks.

Thanks. Above message that I highlighted has now been corrected as you confirmed.

When I logged in last night I got prompted to enter my activation code, I didn't have it at the time so said to skip. I now have the code, log back in ....no prompt. No obvious link or way to activate it now - am I missing something?

I just logged in again and all good, got prompted to activate...

Got to say I opened 2 A/Cs with 2k in each, and TSB have been great could not wish for a better run bank.

19 May 14 #146
Good to hear. Do you know if you're still allowed 2 of these accounts as an individual?

Seemingly so.
morgie
19 May 14 #148
Ah yes, found it here...
Mr cool
20 May 14 #149
Yes as you found out since, 2 A/Cs allowed and they even let you swap your cash around to get the 5% AER.
morgie
20 May 14 #150
Thanks. Does a 'back and fourth' just between the two TSB account qualify you for the 5% then, or do you at least have to fund one from an external source?
Mr cool
20 May 14 1 #151
Yes mate it does, they even set it up for me! You can not go wrong.

has anyone had last months interest yet?
morgie
2 Jun 14 #153
No, I don't think it's expected until the end of the day....

"This means we will work out interest on a daily basis at the relevant Enhance interest rate from the second working day of that month and pay it to your account at the end of the first working day of the next month."

Taken from this page.

Not sure how many are still subscribed, but to let you know when I logged into my account this morning I had a message essentially telling me I had to agree to paperless correspondence as well as paperless statements to keep earning the 5% interest. If anyone had asked me previously I thought I already had both of these options. Anyway, might be worth a check. It's very easy to activate, click a link, tick a box, enter your password (oh and of course read full T&C :sunglasses:). Interest for last month was fine. Here's the message:

Thanks for that morgie.
I'll check mine later to be sure.

Just a reminder, from tomorrow 04/01/2017 the interest rate drops to 3% (from 5%) and only on balances up to £1,500, so you may be wanting to find a new home for your (now spare) £500 (or £1k if you had two accounts) and were just taking advantage of the interest payments.

You should have received a letter from TSB on the above last year, but lots in the press too....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/personal-banking/savings/savers-second-blow-in-24-hours-tsb-cuts-classic-plus-rate-from-5/

If you opened your account at the time this post was made, your 5% cashback on the first £100 contactless spend a month will also have finished (on 31/12/2016).
