It should work with any of them - I don't know if the WLAN and WWAN aerials are tuned for different frequencies so you may want to experiment by using different pairs and looking at the signal strength.

just an update: I rec'ved mine six days ago. Did not open it as i was busy whole week- just opened it today. I purchased the one with the dents on the cover (£189.99).
The dent is very small so not really bothered. lots of scuff marks on the edges, indicates its been heavily used. also pretty dirty- I am surprised they didnt clean before selling (chocolate stuck underneath, 'LATITUDE' covered in dirt, etc). Feel like writing to their customer services.
Switched on pretty fast, connected to WiFi and I am typing this using the laptop. Overall it looks like its working. Screen and battery is fine.
I am sure if this lasts six months (warranty period) then it will last longer. Hope this was a good investment to give to my nephew for his A'level work.

Thanks for the links you provided.
Respectively for system-builder OEM, server core licensing and an upgrade edition usage. None of these are relevant. Please send more.
Note: these OEM:COA sticker did not specify bit (because they aren't bit specific). I don't believe this is unusual for major manufacturer OEM:COA keys.
Yeah me too.

16 Feb 14#311
2 separate disks, one for 32Bit OS & one for 64Bit OS, as mentioned above the license keys are different for OEM versions versus retail/boxed versions. I have NFR disks that came with 1 key that activates either the 32Bit or the 64Bit version. If you want to upgrade from a 32Bit OEM license to a 64Bit OS you must purchase media & key. There is no free (legitimate) upgrade path from a 32Bit OEM license to a 64Bit OEM license, it does not exist.
In other words trying to use the COA key on the bottom of this laptop to activate a 64Bit version of the software won't work...
The "confusion" appears to be around the OEM version - the key is locked to Bit version, other versions (promotional, NFR, retail, enterprise, select agreements, etc) have different licensing.
If you are being sent 2 disks what key do you use to activate the software?

Chrrye
16 Feb 141#308
You are wrong. :man:
License (in the practical form of the Windows Product Key) in not bit-specific. Hasn't been since XP. I note also here that the listing specifies COA Windows copy on laptop.
Acquire the appropriate bit install media (also doable legally) and you are good to go. Must replace the 32bit version (reinstall as I said in my post).
Nope, and you are only licensed to install 32Bit OS... Anything else isn't legit...

Well this Dell is almost twice as powerful and £50 cheaper, also HP build quality cannot rival this machine, plus this dell is an ultra portable laptop, 2 completely different beasts, it's good you are happy with your purchase, even though the Dell is far superior.

Here is the Dell page for this model for more pictures: http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/latitude-e6220/pd
No optical (CD/DVD) drive on this model apparently. You would be able to pick up an external DVD on eBay for about £10.

Sounds good. So the £189 plus £12= £201.

Also a slightly newer model, or you could get the one with dented lid and buy an external usb dvd drive from ebay but won't be saving that much. I would if your budget allows get him the £250 one with the 1 year warranty included.

If the touchpad software is installed, make sure the tap to click option is disabled, it means you won't be able to use the touchpad to select things but just use the left mouse button which should hopefully solve your problem. Also, if the keyboard has one of the those annoying rubber nub things disabled that as well, as I've known them to cause issues in the past.

It uses the same single cable as the non-backlit keyboards. You simply detach the keyboard cable from the old keyboard and insert it into the new keyboard. Some backlit keyboards on ebay seem to have a cable glued onto the logic board which is inverted and won't work on the E6220 - make sure you order a keyboard with no cable attached.

I also did offer £220 on the same model but with the webcam (instead of £294.99) 2days ago and it was accepted. It was dispatched today. They were selling them for £225 before based on the history and I didn't want to try my luck going lower since the one without the webcam was only 10 cheaper anyway.

As that my last chance I won't be trying now in case seller will start accepting lower offers again later. If someone try and 230 will go through please let us know - as that max I would consider paying for ... yet another laptop I don't really need

lol.. i mean 'nonsense'. Allow it man!! :stuck_out_tongue:
Ultrabook is supposed to have a very thin profile. This isn't thin so not sure calling it an ultrabook would be ideal. It was originally meant to be a business laptop but doesn't matter what we make of it now.
joeyjo
3 Feb 14#169
Actually, because the machine is based on Intel's architecture it's an Ultrabook -
But if we're to use your reasoning, why don't we just call it a computer? Mind you, it's probably because of my dumbness that I didn't even know that nonsense was hyphenated - you learn something new every day :stuck_out_tongue:
msaini

Read the title of the page below and stop making non-sense comments.
The manufacturer has clearly mentioned it is a laptop and you may want to give it whatever definition you want. If you think you know more than the creator, you are genius.
Mind you a netbook is a sub-classification of laptop. A laptop can not always be called a netbook but a netbook can always be referred to as a laptop.
There is an extreme level of dumbness involved in this conversation and I wont waste more time here.

3 Feb 14#161
I don't make the rules, the rules are formed from industry standards. I did say it was a hot deal and voted hot and I'm just trying to help users who may rush in (as I almost did) and end up with an ultrabook instead of a laptop. Of course the seller describes them as laptops - he's selling them! You have to be fast on this site and I'm just trying to save users from buying the wrong thing or from wasting their time. No need for foul language really.

Can we stop posting anything under a 15.6" screen as a 'laptop' please. 12" screen should be called a netbook or ultrabook if you must. Hot though for someone who doesn't mind a tiny screen.

Yes it uses the HDD slot - you can't install both unfortunately with this model. Just buy an SSHD (hybrid drive).
Does the mSATA caddy then use the HDD/SSD position? I'm hoping to install an SSD/mSATA and an HDD, is this possible?
Alternatively, how might I run with a smallish SSD and bigger HDD?

That CPU came out in early 2011 and was superseded by Ivybridge and then Haswell, the latter particularly had/has much better graphics, where the Dell's HD 3000 graphics part, even back in 2011 reviewers were grumbling it was underpowered, even for a business model. CNET said some less than flattering things about it being a dated design but solid and that the keyboard is good, which at least is a plus by me, and I appreciate that most people buy a laptop of this size and business-class because they are on the road, doing mainly office work/surfing and that not everyone needs USB3, etc, etc, or a good screen (though even if movies don't look quite as good on a matt screen, they are much better for avoiding reflections/sunlight glare), but depending on the user who had it before you, some will be looking to buy a fresh battery. Dents doesn't thrill me, either. I don't feel technically that I can vote on this one, unless I find a similar spec old laptop from Lenovo. If you want a used business laptop that is coming toward the end of its business three year replacement cycle turnaround, phone around friends and businesses, as the saying goes. You can't beat free/cheap.

Having both an E6220 and a T410 (with the 900x1440 display), I view both machines as having different merits:
- the E6220 is small, light and very well built (on par with the Thinkpad X which which it competes). The screen is quite poor (small, low contrast, poor resolution), it has no optical drive, and upgrade options are limited, but everything else is good (it is the first Dell machine which rivals with the lenovos Thinkpad X in my view).
- the T410 is bigger, heavier, but with a larger screen (16:10 too, with more pixels). Its DVD-RW unit can be replaced by a second hard drive, which is valuable. There are also many battery options (at a cost). It's processor is a bit slower and older, but not that different in practice. It feels to me to be more of a desktop replacement than the the Dell. While this is a bit like marmite, it also has a Thinkpoint mouse substitute, which I quite like.

1 Feb 14#60
sorry forgot to mention about the 6 months warranty and yes the i5 and win7 stickers next to the track pad are in perfect condition, well mine was, and it is far better than the thinkpad, just look at passmark scores.
Also the battery life does last 5 hours +, maybe your mileage will be different +- a bit, and yep the tiny pimples prob are from plug as the lid is ali, but apart from that it is like brand new.
Also upgradeable to a ssd with ease if you need one, but it is no slouch.
I wanted this for the cpu power and portability, very low power consumption too.
Loving the backlit keyboard, just feels like a quality machine all round.

if you need the same spec (i5) than just use a express card firewire port eg
tho yes the seller most like did install it (to replace data, and if any good zeroed out the drive first doubt it), tho not really the point
he should of installed 64 over 32 since its a better selling point (for those tech wise that care about using all there memory and future upgrade), and at no cost since both version use the same cd key,
instead he just gives his buyers extra work

I sell all of this stuff where I work, the Toshiba is a consumer laptop, very cheaply constructed, I'd go for a corporate one any day, but consumers prefer the looks of the consumer laptops. I sold a T410 yesterday and the customer is made up with it, very well constructed and Lenovo have taken time to skin Windows and add their own useful software. The C50 is a general run of the mill boring laptop, most laptops have more power than the average consumer can utilise now anyway. Go corp I say even if they don't look as nice.

They weigh 1.65 Kg with the 6-cell battery. They really are superb laptops - I replaced all 3 kids laptops with these - they are fast especially with Windows 8.1. If you want to upgrade the hard drive you will need a 7mm drive. There is a slot to install a 3G modem such as the Dell 5560 card which is about £25. The screen isn't super bright but is matt finished so doesn't suffer from reflections. My only real complaint is the small size of the touchpad.

I can't get windows update to work, anyone else had problems with this? It comes up with a service is not running error.
Respectively for system-builder OEM, server core licensing and an upgrade edition usage. None of these are relevant. Please send more.
I have done this multiple times from a COA sticker product key. Both on Vista & Windows 7. It phone activated fine. Why would Microsoft activate if this was a problem/not legal?

Note: these OEM:COA sticker did not specify bit (because they aren't bit specific). I don't believe this is unusual for major manufacturer OEM:COA keys.
Yeah me too.

There is a reason why the Microsoft license training is a 6 week course...
https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/training_accreditation.aspx
Not only is Microsoft licensing bit specific it's also core specific:

I keep forgetting this is HotUKdeals, I just hate the spread of false information and people preaching what they think is true. Hopefully anyone following this will read it up for themselves...
If you need convincing as to the facts please see:

Well this Dell is almost twice as powerful and £50 cheaper, also HP build quality cannot rival this machine, plus this dell is an ultra portable laptop, 2 completely different beasts, it's good you are happy with your purchase, even though the Dell is far superior.

It probably has way more cpu power than he will ever need, so will last for years.
I think you would be hard pushed to find a better laptop for the money, all the best

No optical (CD/DVD) drive on this model apparently. You would be able to pick up an external DVD on eBay for about £10.
Shall go for it? I can see they give 6 months warranty. Is the laptops really reliable?

Also a slightly newer model, or you could get the one with dented lid and buy an external usb dvd drive from ebay but won't be saving that much. I would if your budget allows get him the £250 one with the 1 year warranty included.

Both OOS ATM but they flit in and out if you keep an eye on it.
Tech help is available at 'Newandusedlaptops4u'.
All drivers seem to be up to date but it seems that there is no hardware for it installed - very confused!
mines listed there.
I also bought used "Dell Latitude E-Port Plus Docking Station with 130w AC Adapter " from eBay for £20, so should be able to connect to 2 monitors when it arrives.
When I was restoring a backup to my "new" Sandisk 128GB Pulse SSD, which I didn't use for over a year, it just died at about 50% of restoring. It is not visible in BIOS anymore nor it is visible in any other laptop :disappointed: I'll see if Sandisk Support can help.

if you rename or delete that file, then reboot the pc, auto updates will resume. This file keeps track of the update history and status and if the status cannot be determined then updates won’t run. If the file does not exist (deleted or renamed) it is recreated and it is assumed that updates have never been run.
Only 32 bit cd for me. But does have a webcam.
Edit: Does have 64 bit

I missed my delivery of course was at work.
I wasn't too bothered about lid dents though I've received a unit with spray paint on the lid.
Pretty certain it's going back. Anyone else got a spray painted lid?

Ultrabook is supposed to have a very thin profile. This isn't thin so not sure calling it an ultrabook would be ideal. It was originally meant to be a business laptop but doesn't matter what we make of it now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrabook
But if we're to use your reasoning, why don't we just call it a computer? Mind you, it's probably because of my dumbness that I didn't even know that nonsense was hyphenated - you learn something new every day :stuck_out_tongue:
http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/latitude-e6220/pd
The manufacturer has clearly mentioned it is a laptop and you may want to give it whatever definition you want. If you think you know more than the creator, you are genius.
Mind you a netbook is a sub-classification of laptop. A laptop can not always be called a netbook but a netbook can always be referred to as a laptop.
There is an extreme level of dumbness involved in this conversation and I wont waste more time here.

but I don't think you really wanted an answer did you?

For others, mine did not, but they do have same model with webcam specified in the title although it is £295 but could always make offer and try your luck.
one of the fastest i5's there is.
Shame it doesn't have a built in webcam
How did you make an offer? The link, listing doesn't give the option to make an offer
http://www.ebuyer.com/480300-seagate-500gb-solid-state-hybrid-drive-sshd-st500lm000
Alternatively, how might I run with a smallish SSD and bigger HDD?

all you should think about is eatting that jaja but nvm
How come though the same model E6220 some come with webcam some dont. Or the webcam is mentioned by the seller simply to justify the increase of the price from 220 to 295 because of massive orders as a result of this post? when actually the original list of 220 come with webcam as well
MIne was £800 with standard 3 cell battery and 120gb SSD - it's the SSD which really makes the difference!
Have you put the service tag into the dell site to see what warranty is remaining with Dell?? Should be able to get the keyboard and palmrest replaced easy if you want to make it look brand new again...
While this is a bit like marmite, it also has a Thinkpoint mouse substitute, which I quite like.
link
This is approx 5 x more powerful, but it depends want you use it for, just browsing then keep what you have.
but the only showing 3gb for a 32 bit os, I have read some people see 3.25 others 3.6 etc.
So maybe you guys will get 64 bit os too
Also the battery life does last 5 hours +, maybe your mileage will be different +- a bit, and yep the tiny pimples prob are from plug as the lid is ali, but apart from that it is like brand new.
Also upgradeable to a ssd with ease if you need one, but it is no slouch.
I wanted this for the cpu power and portability, very low power consumption too.
Loving the backlit keyboard, just feels like a quality machine all round.
£900 2 years ago is a big drop, which is why sharing the love since I got some real good deals from other members here, thats what its all about
so maybe the seller does install 64 bit os'es but the OP and the sellers page both say 32 bit
not all systems use the same amount on 32bit os but 3.88 gig is almost there, really going to miss using that extra 120meg ram? doubt it.
Now can't make another offer, fab!
CLICKY Has 1 year Warranty too.
e.g. ebay link
edit:also went in at £210, probably the lowest auto accept, someone can try £209 if they want and report back.
if you need the same spec (i5) than just use a express card firewire port eg
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXPRESSCARD-34-to-2-x-PORT-FIREWIRE-1394a-6-PIN-ADAPTER-CARD-400Mbps-for-LAPTOP-/261218415167?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCards&hash=item3cd1d4b23f
tho yes the seller most like did install it (to replace data, and if any good zeroed out the drive first doubt it), tho not really the point
he should of installed 64 over 32 since its a better selling point (for those tech wise that care about using all there memory and future upgrade), and at no cost since both version use the same cd key,
instead he just gives his buyers extra work
and maybe the chance to find office porno's lol
oh ya that right they dont know how to built computers, stick with the t410 deal
The specs on the Dell look better though.
in installing 4gb with windows 7 32 bit witch can only see / use 3 gb of it
come to think of it so is everyone else here since its not been said already *when i was typing it anyways*
and for 8gb you can do far better than £65 (the speed dont matter since the laptop cant run at 1600mhz so will down grade it)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Adata-4GB-DDR3-1333Mhz-SoDimm-PC10600-204pin-Brand-New-in-Retail-Pack-/131106201460?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item1e8689df74 (4gb £19.95 each) *and dont worry about the last 1 this seller has been selling these for almost a year and relists every few days*
This model takes up to 8gb too (circa £65 - http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Latitude%20E6220)
32 bit Windows will only support 3gb of it however...
seller is not stating config number.
backlit keyboard is optional, so you might have one without.
so you might need to buy new one... also size of battery is not mentioned.
OFFICE - means open office software!
I have since whacked in a ssd too and it is rapid
also would a standard ssd fit inside this? I am think of buying one of those ocz 60gb refurb ones. Thanks

larger screen
cheaper

So if I (or rather my in-laws) can put up with the smaller screen size - but higher resolution - this one is the one to go with ?

The history says it was selling for £224.99
it seems there is 215 laptops left.
Great spec for the money, be hard pressed to find a Sandybridge architecture with 6 months warranty for this price elsewhere I reckon.
[sorry ;-) ]
Heat from me: if portability is more important than screen size, but you need more power than a netbook, these are great.
Great laptop. Nice to use.
