One thing I always forget about when I'm buying stuff is student discount. Sometimes student discount won't be of much value as there are usually better offers elsewhere, or there are other voucher codes floating around which make items cheaper than they would be if you were to use student discount. If you’re smart though, you'd be surprised by how much of your precious money you can actually save by taking advantage of student discounts and doing a little maths before you buy things.

I thought the information within a database that I compiled today would make a great post on here so I’m going to post it. I know many people on here are a huge fan of mega threads (e.g. the booze one) so I thought it would be nice to create a 2014 mega thread of student discounts across the UK. I know this post won't benefit everyone, but I'll leave this here for reference and update it throughout the year for the students on here. Some of you may even be able to suggest discounts that I’m unaware of :)

To find a particular retailer / discount:
CTRL + F (Windows)
CMD + F (Mac)

Enjoy!

What utter load of rubbish.

Without 'students' how would we get our next generation of doctors, nurses, paramedics, nurses, lawyers, teachers, scientists, entrepreneurs, accountants, architects, engineers etc.?

They'll pay their taxes after graduation and they'll be able to pass on their knowledge to the next generation.

Your sincerely,

Dr Karlie88 (previous medical student who studied at University and got loads of student discounts for 5 years).

The military drains the economy, whilst students (eventually) boost the economy. Student discounts are given as incentives to study, as most students have little money. What good is 10% off Pizza Hut in Afghanistan?

1 Jan 14 88 #45
Students get degrees and go into higher paying jobs, meaning they end up paying more taxes then they originally would have without education. Supporting people to become educated should be a priority rather then supporting people to fight.

I never really understood this concept. Why should troops get discounts over other people? They have a full paying job! Firefighters, nurses etc defend our country with risk to themselves too and surely should deserve the same special treatment.

Yep, I didn't go to uni and I've stabbed 22 people. It is inevitable that if you don't go to uni you'll definitely end up stabbing someone. Leave it out.

90% of students go to uni for an easy ride and achieve nothing but a piece of paper. The amount of people with degrees who still do the same part time job they did when they were younger is maasive. Although now they do it full time.

Students face massive fees, £9,000 a year just for tuition and on top of that they have living costs and accommodation. After the student loan you're left with about £200 for the year to spend on other things. Like food. Last time I checked the troops got a wage and a choice to join. Hot deal from me.

So joining the forces is a choice, but becoming a student isn't? Flawed logic.

You may not agree with how the Government deploys our armed forces, but we sure as hell should support the men and women that serve us in many, many ways (not just fighting).

A choice to join the military? So students are forced to become a student and get those debts are they?

Interesting.

Anyway, it is all bullcrap - fact. It shows that regular Joes get mugged off. If companies can remain profitable by offering discounts to students, military, NHS staff, OAPs then they can offer them to everyone.

Lol, student discounts aren't given as an incentive to study :-P. Why do businesses care whether people study or not! It's not like all discounts are government subsidised.

Student discounts are given purely because it allows companies to price discriminate and charge people with less money lower prices so they continue to buy their products without having to charge everyone lower prices. It has nothing to do with equity and fairness, it's purely a tool for companies to make more money

I'm a student and these discounts are rubbish. They're just bait to get you to waste loads of money at their store. The only reason students are 'poor' is because they waste all their money.
Tuition fees are paid by the government and you only have to pay them back when you are earning good money so the increase in fees has not affected students at all.

1 Jan 14 #83
Wow I wasn't expecting this to go so got on here - was expecting comments like "not a proper deal" etc. haha :stuck_out_tongue:

Glad some of you appreciate the post though! The point of this post was to point out that you can save a lot of money if you play the game right when you actually need to buy something, and not just for the sake of it. By this I mean that you may be able to save more money using your student card than using a voucher code or cashback.

As for the whole student argument thing... Yes SOME students are lazy and only go to University for the "best 3 years of their lives" if you get what I mean. This day in age a degree is the only way to go though as there is a major shortage of jobs and there's no promise that you're going to get a long term job instantly after leaving school (this is from experience and I have friends who have been 'stuck in a rut' for over a year now as they just don't know how to pursue their career). I have to say that I find the comment about students ruining the country a bit blunt though - you do realise that a lot of the medical research done in this country is done by high ranked universities right?

And yes I will continue to update the list in the future. I have just noticed some typo's in this post as well as I had a few beers last night before typing this out. Will correct these now.

Happy new year all!

I think Students are brilliant and deserve all of our support. The simple reality is that without a Uni degree in today's Britain, you will have a very difficult time landing anything other than the most menial, unstimulating and low-paying of jobs. Some of us have greater ambitions than that. Also, while I don't wish to disrespect the troops, they don't really contribute to the economy. Students do, tremendously.

You seem critical of people that work at McDonalds. A job is a job at the end of the day, and good for them. As for the loan, it now has considerable interest on those that can repay the loan - so they recouperate their money anyway (Inflation + 2% I believe). And this is a deal for students, not student bashing.

I think you'll find the majority of money paid to us from taxes is actually a loan -- i.e. we pay it back. If they want to give us discounts, that's up to them.

For every student working at McDonalds I very much doubt there is an equivalent earning 150k. I imagine it's more like 1:100.

I really don't understand why this has got so political. It's up to the retailers to offer discounts, this website is designed to identify said discounts. Retailers know that discounts buy brand awareness and they figure (probably correctly) that it's good to get future higher earners on board early.

Immoraliste to niqbal870
1 Jan 14 #171
Not really.

I think the majority of the population, who do not have a university degree, can question why tertiary education isn't subjected to full market forces (thus wiping out the viability of 'Mickey Mouse' courses, or the option to doss along, not plan for a career, and then default on your loan due to low lifetime earnings, with no consequences). Why should the guy or girl who went into a trade or job at 16 feel they should subsidise the education beyond a secondary level of people who want to enter high-paying professions and industries?

Obviously it's a policy decision deemed to be in the best interests of society as a whole, but I don't begrudge those who have not been to university, and gone on to be net tax contributors, from taking exception to this.

University fees need to be increased still further in order for students to have significant enough incentive to demand that their courses are providing the skills that high paying employers require, and to determine that the vast majority choose degrees that have the greatest chance of providing them with greater earning potential. Incentive to join courses that lead to vital, but low paying, public sector work would be provided by bursaries funded by the relevant government departments; other than that, I don't see why students shouldn't pay their way in full.

Personally sad to see haters... Its the system not the people that should be hated... Students can be poor, I worked to help fund my degree fees and left with big debts but there are a lots of mommies and daddies supporting the majority of students at my uni.. which if the students on here are telling people to look at stats, then looking at that stat you can see the point the non students are making.. LOL... If students are that hard up how can so many be seen on the town eating out, holidays and drinking most nights?!!? - maybe all the discounts they are getting!! LOL I guess they see themselves hard up when compared to mommy and daddy monies... The Army deserves it in my eyes as much as students, they do get a wage but most cannon fodder are on 18K a year and risking their lives so we can have the freedom to study etc... what about TA ?? They get no wage...do they not deserve it?!?!

Just so you know, while statistics can be used to mislead, without statistics, the world would be a much worse, much more unsafe place to be. Statistics is used to for example:
- Predict the likelihood of flooding, and the occurrence period (I.E 100yr flood etc.)
- Determine adequate sample sizes for drug testing to determine whether or not certain effects are flukes, or if the drug is likely to cause negative effects in general populations.
- etc, the list could go on forever.

Yes you could argue that they don't provide factual data, but they provide a measure of data that would otherwise be impossible to quantify, and as such allow progression at a much faster rate. Testing a drug on everyone would be impossible and impractical, whereas working out a representative sample size that could quantify the drug as safe is both efficient and in 99.999% of cases, enough to show the true effects of that particular drug.

Its also worth noting that bookmakers use statistics to bring in a lot more money than you do. Not bad for something you call rubbish?

On the argument of students v military I would have thought it would be obvious. The military is a paid professional career. The military discount was/is given as recognition, not because they in any way need it. Students however do not have much money, and thereby offering these discounts will likely tempt students into such places, where otherwise they would potentially not go,

And yes, they could offer the student discounts to everyone and still make a profit but why would they? The discounts are used to lure students in. If nothing was discounted specifically for students it would defeat the purpose. Also the companies would all lose a lot of profit... The working man has money to pay full price. The student does not. Do not try to equate the two.

Yours sincerely,
Humble Student

I done things the wrong way round, I joined the army at 17 and done 12 years service. I left for family reasons to bleak job and career prospects. Both groups are deserving of discount anyone who's been to the USA will see the discounts that they offer the armed forces and sometimes their allies, (Disneyland was free for British soldiers). Student discounts offered aren't generally for daily necessary items and I would imagine or in place to "persuade" a student to part with some of the limited cash they have. Great thread btw.
Matty1255
1 Jan 14 #178
Fair point but most of the discounts in this thread are for things I would consider luxury items to the average working person, things like days out at theme parks, fast food, branded clothes, mobile phone contracts, I'm all for discounts on public transport and places like staples but since when does a student need discount at mulberry's or topman.

Great effort OP, heat added. Did you know UGG Australia offer 10% off through Unidays? I didn't see it on the list.

Student haters need to get a grip - not every student is a spoilt brat sponging off their parents for three years at party central, in fact they are the minority. I do a long commute for two days at uni meaning 16 hour days and I work 4 days a week plus private study for my course, so I'm actually less lazy than most of the population and the only person subsidising anything is my fiancé, who works two jobs.

Though this will no doubt get lost within the posts by military worshippers, student (and military) discounts actually have nothing whatsoever to do with those groups of people being "worthy". It's economics - pure and simple. Why on Earth you think someone like the CEO of Amazon or Apple places students on a pedestal I have no idea!

The discounts exist as a way to attract those groups into the store and spend money - nothing more, nothing less. Students are a particularly popular group to target in this way as they generally have a high proportion of discretional spending (i.e. on clothes etc.) and often won't be brand-loyal. This is also the reason why banks hand out huge interest free overdrafts to them - get them early on and they'll likely be a customer for life.

1 Jan 14 1 #198
Oh Sarah- don't be offended by some people and their ignorance. You're replying to someone who has no clue about how students can finance themselves through their studies. I took out a student loan and am happy to pay it off by doing a hard day's work which is the same as many other students. Others work to earn the money which pays off their tuition fees. That gilly is probably just bitter about their own failures

It's worth noting the Amazon.co.uk 5% isn't off everything, it's off the following: Books, CDs, DVD, Jewellery & Watches, Grocery, Personal Care Appliances, Health & Beauty, Shoes, Tools, Lawn & Garden, Automotive, Kitchen & Home and Pet Supplies. some students train in the UOTC (University Officer Training Corp) such as myself, who are hoping for a career in the army , as an officer. So not necessarily students before military. In addition, the benefits such as reduced healthcare, free glasses and dentist, railway travel are benefits of being in the army. To the comments about Armed forces, there is this https://www.defencediscountservice.co.uk/ an official discount service too, as similar for students. Heat for this post, effort alone and helps students. My daughter is at University, gets no help, grants are non existent, she only has the 3 x 9000 as a loan and her living allowance is also a loan, not grant which does not cover all her costs, we top her up. So students need all the help they can.

Think logically people here. How does the military drain the economy? If it wasn't for the military show of force the UK being a tiny island that wouldn't of conquered a 1/3 of the world in the past making the UK it's wealth which stands today. If it wasn't for all the victories we would be no richer than lets say and African country trying to just survive. Just to let you know I pay taxes and national insurance (around £700 per month!!) as well as all my money going back into the economy which to say the majority of students haven't contributed yet and actually drain resouces by having to borrow large lumps of money with possibly never having to pay it back if they fail to achieve I think it stand at 23k a year?

You could add to the list:

Computer science students get full MS Visual Basic Studio software FREE. I've heard you can also claim a free Windows OS license.

Computer science students also get a free 3 month trial of Marmalade and an extended 3 months if they release a prototype app within that first 3 months.

HP online give you access to a Staff & Student discount store, with 10% savings on New laptops and computers. You need to register with your university email address.

Again for CS students, if you register as a Xbox developer MS will send you 2 free development kits (Xbox consoles).

Register as a developer for Windows app store and release an app to get a free Windows phone from Microsoft.

Although I agree with you, but I think sellers are not thinking from this perspective.

They are looking at Client Lifetime Value. It's a very smart move to attract customers from Uni with small discounts.

1. Shopping habits you had in your young adulthood like a lot other things can stick with you for the rest of your life, so the client retention rate is very high.

2. Because students with Uni degrees are more likely to be better payed in future. It's always easier for business to get a bigger slice from a bigger pie.

But anyway, enjoy the discounts while you can :-)

According to a FOI request - the majority of NHS staff are immigrants. And before I get jumped on like some kind of daily mail reading right wing extremist nut... I actually think that's a good thing. They have a hard work ethic, zero sense of entitlement and don't suffer from the 'gimme' attitude that British students seem to - as highlighted by this post. Plus, skilled migrant labour is MUCH MUCH less of a drain on the economy (again - as highlighted by this post)

Unfortunately, while we do have tremendous talent in this country, it is far cheaper to employ a trained Dr from overseas. It isnt fair, and I don't agree with it but that is simple economics. With the money it costs to train a someone here in Britain through A-levels, 5yrs of Med School and then their T1 and T2 years, you can employ a trained Dr from - say - Bangladesh and pay their salary for about 9 years - at which point you then 'break even' and have no financial gain/loss... however for that investment you'd then have an inexperienced and newly qualified British Dr or a Bangladeshi consultant with 10+ years of clinical exposure.

If it advertises 10% off for students - eg a clothing store - go the checkout first and ask if they will give you one. Your money is the same as the student in front of you and a business would be bonkers to turn it down.

Student discounts aren't about altruistic it is sound business sense: every business wants customers who will have the highest disposable income. Anyway, they don't even ask for a student e-mail address when you sign up, just your uni's web address. Anyone can just go on, paste a random uni's website into it when signing up and they'll get a 3-year license as well, not that I'm suggesting it.

Jack Wills discount is only on full price merch (non-sale) and NOT valid in Outlet Stores (Bicester, Gunwharf etc).

Students can receive 15% off Jack Wills product in store with any valid student card, by displaying a Student Beans mobile voucher on their smartphone or by displaying a valid UNiDAYS verification page on their smartphone. Offer valid in all UK & Ireland stores, excluding Outlet locations (Bicester Village, Gunwharf, Halifax, Kildare and Kilver Court) and Jersey store.

Discount can not be used on sale items, combined with any other offer, other discount and/or transfer to previous purchases.

The British Army prides itself on educating it's personnel, I for one am an example of that gaining a HND in electronic engineering and a BSc(Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography during my time in. Not all aspects of the military involve fighting, believing that only shows a lack of education from yourself. Having a degree in some random subject does not instantly give access to higher paying jobs also.

I believe students should get discounts, they are skint after all and every little helps. I just hate Squaddie bashers. Soldiers today are not the soldiers of yesterday.

Yours Tom ex-Student (twice BSc and MSc) and ex-Bootneck & student discounts are not given as an incentive to study, businesses are targeting young people while they are choosing to buy goods and services for the first time to try to make them loyal to those particular brands for life so that the business will have a long term revenue stream - there's nothing altruistic about them at all (although that's no reason not to take advantage of them when you can)

15 Feb 16 1 #336
Dear xxxxx

Thank you for your email received 14 February 2016.

I am sorry to hear that your NUS student card does not work on our site. I can confirm that unfortunately we do not accept NUS student cards anymore for our Arcadia branded sites. We do still honour student discount, however it is via a different method.

For future orders I would advise using the Student Beans codes or the Unidays site as advertised on our website. All you would need to do is sign up, verify your student email address and get your student discount code instantly.

Please be advised these codes have an expiry time and you must be signed in to both the student beans site as well as our website for the codes to work.

If there is anything further I can help with, please do not hesitate to contact me by replying to this email address.

Thank you for your patience.

Kind regards,
sabros

The military first brigade make me laugh..students aren't getting paid a full time wage, hence why they're offered reduced prices, plus they (or some) will eventually put plenty back into the economy.

I know! I missed out at Clearwell Caves and mines this weekthe student discount wasn't advertised on the tariff board but the group behind us asked and got £1 off admission . I went back and asked retrospectively but was told once I had bought the ticket I couldn't have the discount. What made me laugh at the helicopter museum near bristol I showed him my student card to get the concession price and then he wanted me to gift aid my admission money. I said "I don't pay tax, I'm a student" ! Anyway both venues were worth visiting with 9 and 7 year old boys

How can you say the military is a drain on the economy, its thanks to the brave men and women who put themselves in harms way that the economy is where it is at the present time. They go through things that are unimaginable to you and I am sure you wouldn't want to face in your worst dreams. People have given up their lives to protect this country and to give people the right to live as they do. A lot of those that have served in the military are some of the most experienced and respected people in their fields from Dr's who have served in the front line saving service personnel's lives and using treatments that are only now being used in nhs hospitals. They also have to deploy for months at a time away from loved ones, partners, children, brothers, sister and that's if they are lucky to return and all the while get 20 mins a week allowance to phone home and talk to those they have left behind. No internet due to security threats, where as I am sure the longest you have been away from a family is a term at uni or a few weeks away on holiday with friends. Bare a thought for them and all the while they are away they are still paying tax and national insurance to the government yet you students who I applaud for continuing to gain an education and better yourselves have the gaul to say that the military are a dain in the economy or don't deserve anything. I think you should possibly considered exactly what they have given up to allow you to be where you are today, and be thankful you can be given all these benefits, and I think the armed forces need a bit more respect and should be shown this with some discounts awarded like students. If you feel I have been to harsh then I dare you to join the armed forces and serve and see how you feel afterwards.

I know it was supposed to be renewed at start of September but there was issues and instead the previous code got extended until yesterday - which was no good to me as I'd already used all my promo credit up. This was due to issues they were having. Hopefully they will get it sorted out though, as it was definitely my most used discount and I renewed for three years because of it a few months back.

2 Nov 16 #364
You're an idiot. You must surround yourself in very exclusive circles. Hardly anybody from my school went to uni and most people I know have highly paid, highly skilled, and highly rewarding jobs, without a degree!

Also soldiers contribute massively to the economy. Why do you think local communities get upset when a nearby base looks like it might close? Because all those soldiers prop up the local economy by spending all their money there.

And not only that, us students once we graduate and get into work pay a higher tax rate due to the extra from the students loan company (to pay back the tuition fees over time).

Although saying that, there is a clause that if the "debt" is still there after when the person is around 50 then it gets waived. I know some girls who take their studies, get married and never work again (implying they would never pay back the tuition fees), there should be a law in which case that tax gets passed onto the working husband.
