I was looking around for a laptop before the new university year starts as my current one have started acting up and found this pretty quickly. I then searched about even more with this in mind and I really struggled to find anything close to these specs for £700, let alone £604!

This is the "Top of the range" 15R but it currently has an extra £100 off compared to the others which makes it the cheapest of the range!

It is only this price until the end of the 28th I believe. Edit: Now extended to the 4th!

6 months interest-free credit available as well!

Specs:

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3632QM Processor (up to 3.20 GHz, 6M cache)
Windows 8 64bit, English
15.6in Full High Definition (1080p) WLED with AntiGlare
8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
1TB Serial ATA (5400RPM)
32GB SSD for Caching
Blu-ray Disc BD-Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
2GB AMD Radeon HD 7730M
Backlit Keyboard and Multi-Touch Pad
2.76 kg

Should manage most games on medium quality. (I hope)

Great price for new, but I'd personally still look for a dell outlet one for comparison, as often you can knock a couple of hundred off and still have a warranty (not for everyone, just an additional suggestion).

Have fun trying to get the AMD Radeon HD 7730M to run all your games. It's such a hassle, the intel 4000 graphics card will run everything by default, which is not indicated anywhere by Dell. For spending so much ££ you'd expect it to function normally out the box. Don't be tricked into buying this poo.

Absolute rubbish. I have this laptop and run AMD WHQL or the new betas and every game has worked perfectly so far. Make sure you configure the game in the catalyst control centre to use maximum performance ie the dedicated GPU and you're good to go. I have mine overclocked to 690 / 930 and it will run a games at 1366 x 768 like BF3 on a mixture of medium/high and the odd thing at ultra. GRID 2 virtually maxed except AA. Play around with the settings especially things like shadows that hit a GPU hard and you will be running 30fps + no worries.
The only downside I have found with this laptop is the battery life(not gaming as obviously this is a drain) and its a bit of chunk.
ApolloVirtue
24 Aug 13 1 #13
You have to use AMD switchable graphics to manually indicate you want the software to run at high performance. It's a pain in the ass and I don't think it's been working well. If you enable high performance with steam and check your system properties on steam, it still shows Intel 4000.

I have a 17R SE which has a 650m in it which is comparable to the 7730m, the not automatically switching issue only happens when you use nvidia drivers straight from nvidia and not Dell's, which is a bit of a problem. If you want to use the latest driver like me then all you have to do is use the customisable hardware button on the top right and set it to the nvidia control panel, when you click the button, the panel pops up and all you need to do is click high performance nvidia and not auto or built in Intel. Takes 5 seconds to do before playing a game, so not a deal breaker really.

I was going to order a 15r se from the outlet and found one fore less than £400 I think, but it had a standard screen (not 1080p) which is consistently slated in reviews as being poor.

Yes, this Dell laptop comes with a webcam. I'm using the same laptop as we speak - a Dell 15R SE (7520).

Dell always have voucher codes to use, here is the Official Dell UK Voucher Code page for future reference. The only advice I can give is, if your laptop hasn't been shipped, maybe you could quickly phone Dell to cancel your order, and then just re-order on the website again using the voucher code. Good Luck!

I wouldn't buy a dell tbh :/ I bought the top of the range XPS 13 and it broke within 10 months. I wasn't worried initially because it was within warranty but then I discovered a Dell warranty is a hollow warranty.

An engineer came out twice and even screwed the screws in wrong and stripped the thread off the laptops screw holes. Dell refused to help and told me I was lying about the issue. I battled it out for 2 months and even emailed Michael Dell himself, before eventually giving up and buying a new laptop, just under a year after I spent £1300 on the Dell.

I definitely will not be buying a Dell ever again :disappointed:

24 Aug 13 #31
Sorry but i disagree. Its a wonderful laptop and a very powerful graphics card. The problem that you are facing is due to the driver. Just update the driver and you will be fine.

I was playing NFS Run on this just half an hour ago on HD 720p - All high butter smooth. And you don't have to set anything manually. AMD Switchable graphics kicks in whenever you start a game or a high graphics utilisation program like Video editing.
Also, it provides you manual control in case you want your browser to use onboard graphics all the time or similar applications.

Just update the driver to the latest mobility driver and this laptop rocks

The screen is also matte so is amazing even in a bright room  Backlit keyboard doesn't come by default but you can add it if not available. as its very helpful when gaming at night.

You're welcome. Phone as early as you can on Monday (the closer to 8am the better), I'm not even sure if they cancel orders over the phone, but if they do; you will need to be quick. Also, if you do cancel your order, be 100% sure there is another one in-stock for you to order (in-case their system doesn't update stock numbers properly). As the worst scenario would be, you cancel your existing order, and then try to re-order and then find out there is none in-stock or the price has gone up. :disappointed:

Good price, but I bought this exact same laptop over a week ago refurbished, for £499.

Word of warning for anyone looking to get this laptop, it has the worst touchpad known to man, barely usable, just read the online reviews.

However it does have a built in webcam and is one of the most powerful laptops I have ever used, doesn't overheat like I feared it might and runs many AAA games at 40 - 60 FPS on very high settings.

I agree dell has to have the worst touch pads known to mankind. My dell inspiron i7 has a bad touchpad, got two replacements immediately after purchase, first replacement was even worse than original. Second replacement was not much better than first. Gave up as engineer said that's how dell touchpads are! The replacements wasted a few months of mine. Everyone who had used the touchpad comments how crap it is. It is worse than even my 11y old Compaq laptop touchpad. There are numerous online complaints about the crap touchpad which I only saw after buying the damn thing. Never again buy from this crap company. Although some say the xps range has different touchpad. I have yet to see any laptop with a worse touchpad than that of inspiron. The rest of it is OK but build quality isn't great as flex is there on the whole to bit all along the touchpad and keyboard and often pressure on the other areas can trigger the touchpad.

Everything is great about it other than the charger, which is so bad that it takes the laptop from an 8.5 down to a 4.5/10. How Dell have managed to invent a charger that persistently falls out is anyone's guess. I'm on my 6th charger.

I thought about the 17r but since these graphics cards are pretty weak, I read that it was better to be able to run games at the native resolution on a smaller screen than having to turn down the settings or resolution for a bigger one. Not sure if that's true or not.

It really isn't. I know plenty of people who suffer from the same problem and this isn't my first Dell with the issue.

25 Aug 13 2 #45
Here's a video on the issue with 141k views:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI7DBtZg-QQ

Or here's something from Yahoo answers:

We all must be using our laptops incorrectly. The occasional 3 centimetre movements I make must really take their toll after 3 months of usage. Every other laptop (that isn't a Dell) has a charger that connects properly to the charging port. Even the technicians Dell have sent round tell me that the charger is heavy and will eventually become loose.

I'm never going to buy a Dell again unless I can can check the charger in-store.

I bought the i5 (without bluray) from the outlet for £400. Seems a solid build, but it's not really been used much so far as it's for 6th form use at school for my son and as a gaming back up when his desktop goes wrong (and I don't have time to fix it).
This can be converted to a mini-SSD card version, but requires taking apart and inserting a different card to accept the mini-SSD. I'll do it when I have some time.

Major problem with the Dells has been children carrying them around with the adapter and cracking the charger inlet- maybe this is why the charger falls out. Had to replace this on 2 laptops so far. Dreading it if my daughter's (main culprit) XPS 13 goes the same way!

No, Not a DELL!

I bought this same laptop (Inspiron 15r SE) and when I tried to update the hdd to SD after 7 month, I found all four of the screws which were supposed to secure the HDD to laptop were missing.

So I contacted dell and they told me they'll have to charge me for replacing the screws because "the warranty is void because I opened up the laptop".

So I asked them am I not even allowed to open up the laptop to install RAM, new HDD, etc and they came back to me saying they can't do anything because I have been using the laptop for more than six month and because I don't have any proof that I didn't loose the screws myself!

Basically they told me I should have found out the internal screws were missing within the first six month of ownership and also at the same told me the 1 year warranty is void because I opened it up myself !!!

They were also arrogant enough to tell me that "NONE of their products come with ANY parts missing" because they have a "industry standard quality check" before shipping their products.

Oh the laptop which they sold allegedly as brand new was definitely not new. A lot of the screws inside were stripped, if they weren't missing in the first place.

These laptops ARE assembled by a bunch of monkeys, I believe....

AVOID DELL like the plague, just my two cents...

I have this laptop and it does have weird driver issues.

Mainly with the switchable graphics. Even with the drivers from dell. Because the windows update updates the intel hd graphics and somehow fudges the 7730 drivers.

Cant count how many times ive reinstalled them. Because you end up using the latest catlyst drivers from amd anyway, seems to be every time a new game comes it dosent play well until a new beta driver designed for the game comes out.

Tomb raider for me was the most hasstle. Next time i wont be getting one with amd graphics. Has the nvidia one before with my old gaming laptop had them optomus switching in it. No problems what so ever everything ran as should

Have no idea now a days tho. Personally if ur gonna go the gaming route do yourself a favor and just build a desktop for the price this is, you can get something that performs so much better.

Just purchased one with the 6-month interest free loan. I'd been thinking about spending roughly this amount on a laptop for a while, but was struggling to find anything with this range of features.

There's also the 17r on offer for £599 (£130 off) which appears to be a good deal as well. The main differences are obviously the 17r has a bigger screen (both are full HD, anti-glare), but the 17r only has a i5 processor while the 15r has an i7, the 15r has a blue-ray player while the 17r doesn't. On the plus side for the 17r, it has a slightly higher rated graphics card.

Those msata cards are for faster caching of data - regularly used data gets put on the msata drive to speed up access. It sort of acts as a fast tempory store between memory and the hard drive as I understand it. It's not used for storing the OS and is not accessible as a drive.

£499 was only for those in the Employee Purchase Program anyway, it was £523 for everyone else. Plus the one he linked to doesn't have a blu-ray drive nor a backlit keyboard judging by the description. I would probably opt for saving a bit more money than a blu-ray drive but as you said, no time machine. :disappointed:

Dell laptops are made in China, not Poland. Only certain desktop and server products are manufactured in Poland.

Some systems are now bulk shipped and stored in a central hub, which means they are available for next day delivery, but not his particular model.

I searched around a fair bit before settling for this laptop, and could only find one other with an equally as impressive price to features ratio. That's the MSI CX61 available from saveonlaptops.co.uk, although it is slightly more at £699. But for the extra money you're getting a better Haswell processor along with a better graphics card as well. I have no idea about the build quality though, and don't know what the company selling them are like. But other than that, I think this is just about the most powerful laptop currently available in the UK for the price.

I got pretty much this exact model (7200 rpm 750 gb HDD instead of the 1TB 5200) from the Outlet back in about February. Cost me £490 if I remember correctly.

Thoughts - personally I think its rather good build quality wise. It does however, have its quirks:

1. The bluray drive often doesn't register a CD in the tray. This could be a dust/dirt issue but as I rarely use the drive having to give a quick blow over the optics every now and again to get it running is no big deal.
2. In sleep mode it has an annoying tendency to becmoe completely unresponsive if left for a couple of days. I tend to just leave my laptop on for long periods of time. My monitor USB powers a few things so I dont want to power it down and I want sleep mode to prevent burn in or pixalation issues, Its another minor thing and possibly a Windows 8 quirk
3. The graphics. On the whole it works very well. Especially now that the drivers seem to have settled in. In the early days, games like Football Manager looked utterly honking. The game just didnt detect a 3D card and couldnt be forced into a higher performance so the 3D match would regular look mince. There was no consistency either, sometimes it worked, other times it didnt. Most games let you force the card into action by just manually setting a higher level of detail and the card holds up pretty well with what Im chucking at it. Dishonoured is a recent one that springs to mind and played pretty smoothly.

I remember a few quirks with the touchpad too, like the keyboard being inresponsive when using the pad but there are easy fixes for that when you Google it.

Anyway, like I say, very happy with it. Ive bought plenty of laptops in teh past that came with many more issues than the above. And for the price, even at £600, you're getting good bang for buck.

ok lets get to the grit of this laptop i have had mine for 3 months now and here the low down

this laptop for the money is serious equipment its lovely looking lovely screen fast and can perform any task with ease only let down very slight by windows 8 lol

the only downside is the amd 7730 discrete chip now its not the gfx thats the problem im running tomb raider and fifa 13 at full res and metro last light at full res with high settings and black ops 2 at high with 720p this chip is very very good

the only problem is the drivers dell include a set which works but are old and struggle so when you update the intel driver and then the amd driver it borks the switchable part then when you get it right it auto updates from windows who still have an old intel driver so it messes it up again

heres the solution

head over to leshcats lab (just google) and d/l his whql 13.4 driver which has both intel and amd built in use the driver cleaner to delete your current drivers follow the instructions careful . then install the leshcats

then make sure you disable auto updates in both windows and driver instilation this stops them updating .

you will then have everything working and able to set which program uses which card

to those that say it dont work then you dont understand how it works this is a discrete chip and only kicks in when it needs to ,

ie if your playing a game then if a part of that game is low res or maybe cut scene the intel 4000 will do it but then if it gets tense and lot of action the 7730 kicks in

it works on all games including steam and origin even though it shows the intel4000 as your primary

a way to test this is download gpu-z and select the amd7700(this is what it will show) then click the render test and it will run showing you amd card clocks kick in and the temp rising for the 7730 and not for the intel

Bought an 702 I7 17" a couple of years ago, great spec and with codes best price around with spec. Yes they are made in China and it was great watching the tracking as it came across Asia. Names of countries I never knew existed. When it arrived noticed the PSU was very busy so did chat on line and a replacement was sent next day. Never had a issue with it. Would I buy dell again, most definitely if the price was right.

I got this laptop but i5 for £435 in December, at the time the time I had the opportunity to get the i7 without bluray and backlit keyboard for around £500. At £600 I think it's still a excellent deal and you won't find anything close at that price but I do think it should be around £500 now. What you get in the outlet is a fairer price.

I'll always remember the shocking treatment from Dell a good few years ago when I tried to get them to fix the widely publicised overheating issues with the 8600m GPU.
Must've taken 20 emails to them before they finally sent someone out to it. It worked fine for a few weeks then started happening again. (shutting down after 30 seconds of any GPU intensive action)
My mum got an otherwise fine laptop out of it at least, which is still going strong as long as you don't attempt to play a game, so it wasn't a total loss.

I probably would still buy another Dell, as that was more Nvidia's fault to begin with, but I'd have to really research it beforehand!

I got this a month ago for £500 from the Dell Outlet.

As stated already in the thread, the graphics card is a pita.

I've set program's to run at high performance, but in game benchmarks etc, still state it's using the Intel 4000 card, not the stand alone card. Saying that, played a few games on max & it's worked a treat, so no idea what it's actually using.

I've installed the free classic shell on it & it's even better than windows 7. Win 8 also incorporates a fast boot, so your PC will boot into windows in around 5 seconds.

Updating the GPU drivers caused it to crash though & disable the stand alone card. I had to re-install the older ones from the intel site & re-boot to get working again.

All in all, brilliant PC, but I would save myself £100 & get it from the Dell Outlet - that is updated daily around 2:10pm daily, with this model & spec on it everyday

Have fun

My son has started using this for gaming when away from his pc. The driver was updated though the Dell website and it works perfectly. Hmmm maybe I read the credit agreement wrong this is what it says: This is a 36 month agreement payable by a document fee of £29 payable on the date we approve this agreement and then either by a first instalment of £25.93 on 07/03/2014, followed by 34 monthly instalments of £25.93 payable on the same date of each succeeding month and a final instalment of £25.93 payable on 07/02/2017 OR one single payment of £628.57 (including Administration fee) Payable on or before 28/02/2014 (special offer date payment) If you exercise your right to make the special offer date payment an Administration fee of £25 applies.

So this looks like to me that I have paid the £29 Document fee when I ordered it on my debit card and if I want to pay it off within the 6 months I then have to pay another £25 Administration fee !!

By the way I used the code for the discount and it says total amount of credit £603.57, so it looks like the Document and Administration fee are not classed as "interest".

Mine is in the shipping stage and although it is a very good deal for the price, in feeling mild regret that I didn't go for the inspirion 17r SE at £599 (less with discount code) The 17r has a bigger screen which is also full HD, an added subwoofer, a numerical keypad and a better graphics card. It does lack the blu-ray player however and also has a lesser i5 processor, but since I'll mainly be using this for web browsing, multimedia and gaming, that wouldn't matter too much. The i7's really only make a big difference if you're doing some serious multitasking or video editing etc. The better GPU in the 17r trumps the better CPU in the 15r for gaming I think.

Oh well, I shouldn't have rushed in so quickly. Regardless, I'm still looking forward to getting the 15r as it's still a really nicely spec'd budget laptop. I'd just recommend to anybody considering this to also check out the 17r SE version, especially if your main consideration is gaming and multimedia.

My old man has stated he wants a laptop for photo editing and web browsing. Budget is £600 which covers this 15se and 17se. From the look of it the only difference is screen size and chip i5 in the bigger 17" and i7 in the 15". Anyone willing to nudge me in the right direction (or even push me in a completely different one)?
touchyandalou to superdry09
2 Sep 13 2 #153
How good are his eyes? Bear in mind that on a 1080p 15 inch screen, text can appear quite small, especially on certain websites. If that's a consideration, the 17r may be the better choice. If not, the 15r has a better processor and provided your dad isn't a gamer (the 17r has a better graphics card) then the 15r would probably be the way to go.

But having said that, these are fairly highly spec'd for budget laptops and will probably be a bit of overkill for what your old man wants to use them for. I'd imagine you could save a hundred quid or more and still get him a machine that sits his needs. I'm no expert but somebody on the forums at notebookreview.com could advise you better.

5 Sep 13 #174
Hi ucakpam,

Both the John Lewis laptop and this Dell laptop seem a bit of an overkill for your needs in my honest opinion; especially considering the fact that you don't want to use the laptop for gaming. You could probably get a laptop for under £400 for your needs, this deal (link below) would have probably been sufficient enough for you - even though it is now expired.

Samsung Laptop Link

Also, remember, if you purchase a laptop with a Full HD Screen (1920x1080) on a 15.6" screen or so, you will very likely find everything to be quite small, especially considering the fact that you say your 'eyesight isn't that great'. In these circumstances, you would have two options, either buy a separate large monitor and attach it to the laptop or just buy a lower-priced laptop (as I mentioned earlier) which should come with a lower screen resolution, like 1366x768 which will probably be much better for reading and your eyesight.

If you have any more questions or need more detailed advice, feel free to ask me.

I have this laptop and as previously stated a lot of issues with drivers, widi etc for me. I also had to get the disk drive replaced on day 1. On your point tho, the network card is crap. Really poor connectivity when every other device I have works fine. As disappointed to find it was only single band also (didn't do my homework had just presumed). Overall I wouldn't recommend it and will be putting it down to experience and selling it at some point down the line

I'm not a hardcore gamer but I also had troubles with my Dell laptop. It used the Intel graphics card for everything, to the point where I started to wonder if they even had put the other graphics card in! Requires alot of messing about to configure correctly.

Would have liked to have seen a 7200 rpm hard drive in a 'Top of the range' Inspiron Dell laptop like they have had in the Vostro range for quite a while now.
Orville to Robbo11
5 Sep 13 #189
With the in-built 32GB SSD you will not really notice the difference between 5,400 and 7,200 hard disks. 7,200rpm are faster, but they are also noisier, run hotter, consume more battery, and tend to have lower MTBF's (they die quicker). 5K HDD's are better suited to laptops than 7K HDD's.

I've resorted to using a homeplug with ethernet for the time being because the wireless card/connectivity is so bad. I have bought various routers to tinker with as projects but will likely buy a usb network card to solve the issue and a wireless homeplug as well. Wouldnt go with dell again personally.

Movement on my delivery tracking. Apparently being delivered today when the invoice had delivery date of 12th Sept.

Re. 32GB SSD - The sales rep I spoke to didn't seem to think that it came with an SSD and to have one would involve taking out the BR drive, but then again they did seem dazed and confused. It wasn't like I was asking them really technical questions either. However, if it is delivered today, I'll update over the weekend.

Right, needing a bit of help with this switchable graphics thing. I'm still downloading from Steam so haven't tried it on any games yet, but I've been running Can You Run It and each time it only detects the integrated graphics. I've set both java.exe. and chrome to high performance in the catalyst control center already but still getting the same result. Anyone able to shed some light onto the issue?
jk12324
6 Sep 13 #212
Nvm, CYRI is just limited in its function. I downloaded the FFXIV:ARR benchmark and the first time it ran using integrated graphics as well. I changed everything related to it to high performance in the catalyst center but it was still showing as intel 4000 so I thought it wasn't working. However when I ran it again, it was a lot better than the first time so it was obviously using the card while thinking it was still the intel graphics. I've just concluded that some software will have trouble distinguishing between the options but as long as you set it to high performance in the catalyst center, the card will be used. No biggie.

1. Windows index score rating doesn't recognise the graphics card?

It's a switchable graphics card, windows index uses the intel card, not the independent one.....
jk12324
8 Sep 13 1 #225
I think it is detecting the card because it's only "Desktop Graphics" that gets a 4.8 but "Gaming Graphics" get a 6.6.

I'm having a different problem with the wifi. It works fine then randomly it just loses internet access. It detects the signal fine and that, but just says "No internet access" under the name of the network when you hover over the bars. The only way so far I've found to make it work again is to turn flight mode on and off again. I'm in two minds on whether to contact Dell about it, cos it seems like it's a known problem with the network card judging by a few other posts here and it doesn't sound like something they could fix.

My one came with 15.8.0.5 which is dated April, but when I get Windows to search for an update it tells me it is up to date? :S

The problem I have with it is that it loses internet access even though it remains connected to the wi-fi signal. You won't be able to get a battery big enough for long gaming sessions. Gaming runs the battery down super fast in any laptop, it's just something best done while plugged in.

I like to run my games in 1366x768 at medium instead. :P The low settings look horrible in some games (Gotham City Imposters for one). It's able to run Left4Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 at pretty much everything maxed out and still running smoothly in 1920x1080 which I'm super happy about.

Received mine quite quickly. Nice laptop, but heavy if this matters to you. The Intel wireless card was disconnecting randomly until I downloaded/ ran the latest driver (now it's perfectly stable, not one drop out so far). All in all a nice product (full hd screen looks great). Battery will of course suffer with this sort of power but I don't mind. Has anyone else still waiting for this to arrive had their order unceremonially cancelled?

Been waiting for 3 weeks, was told by email last week there was a delay, that was ok by me as I guess there where a lot of orders on this, then this week I've gone to check it and the order is cancelled. No email or call notifying me about it, no info what will happen with my credit deal that I signed up for etc.

I talked to customer services this morning, they didn't seem to really know what happened or why, and said someone would call me about maybe offering an alternative. I then got a call back just now and they basically want me to reorder either at the same price for a far lesser spec or the same spec for near enough £200 more :S

Mboora you need to get back on the phone and really push them on this as they are messing you around, get them to match or beat the system specs (you may have to help them by finding a model number of a slightly better base model then they'll add all the upgrades) then get them to match the price you've paid, it may take a few phone calls but keep calm and firm with them (don't shout or swear at the operator it will almost always get you nowhere) and keep pushing them to match what they already sold you.
