I ate these noodles as a late night snack. Throughout the day I had only consumed things that I eat regularly. This pack of noodles (which I brought because of the very cheap price of 39p) had made me wake up several times in the night and vomit. I am not sure if I got an unlucky packet but, needless to say, I will not be buying this brand of noodles again. My immediate reaction to first tasting the noodles was that they were very salty but had a weak chicken flavour. I do like salty noodles and I always add salt to my normal noodles (batchelors) but this was another kind of salty. I ate the whole thing because I was quite hungry and I thought I better not waste the noodles. This experience has put me off eating noodles. I am not quite sure of the sell by date but, I will be contacting Tesco ( the store I brought these from) to explain my concern.

Koka noodles are about a 7 out of 10 in my books - perfectly edible and obviously excellent value at 25p, but in absolutely no way are they the "best noodles ever" like some people (including the OP!) claim. They're probably the best you'll get for 25p (though Maggi's 5 packs for 99p run them close), but start spending more per pack and you *will* find nicer noodles.

It just takes a lot of experimentation, which most people aren't willing to do. Like a few people have said, Ningshim's Shin Ramyun (or the Kimchi Ramyun if you want a less spicy version) is clearly a superior noodle product to any of the Koka range and can be found in UK supermarkets for 65-70p (order bulk online and you can get it at 50p a pack if you order enough).

As for how you cook them, instant noodles are a fast food item, so I cook them the fastest possible way with no washing up afterwards. So that's noodles into a disposable plastic bowl (or a re-used Pot Noodle pot!), add sachet contents, then boilng water from a jug kettle (saucepans are for losers!), stir with a disposable plastic spoon until all noodles are no longer crunchy and then eat with spoon. I do not drain the water because the broth is half the meal and pouring it down the sink is frankly ludicrous!

It's not dissimilar to how I prepare my Pot Noodles (who leaves their Pot Noodle to go cold like the moronic instructions tell you to?!)

I slap mine in a pan, pour boiling hot water from the kettle on them, turn the gas up full for about 2 minutes, drain and add the flavor when about 90% of the water has gone.

Does anybody cook them differently? :face_with_monocle:

i tend to do it the same as a pot noodle and just cover them with boiling water then leave for 5 minutes

Where do you get these? I've seen the pot noodle ones of this brand in Asda and I get them often. Very spicy!

Pretty sure they weren't 70p a throw when I last got them though.

I saw a program where they took a load of people who reckon they suffer from bloating or sweating or whatever when they have msg to two restaurants, chinese and italian and surveyed them. They did show symptoms after the chinese meal and none after the italian but it turned out to be a trick and the italian food was the one with msg in it.

People who did genuinely did have reactions, of which there are very very few compared to the number who have psychosomatic reactions did have reactions to naturally occuring glutamates.

Whoops, my mistake. Yes, Singaporian. Bought so many of flavours on the shelves at Chinese supermarkets, my tastebuds have gone into overdrive to the point forget which one is which comes from. There's just so much on the shelves these days, you don't know where to start.

My favourite noodles. Oh, and there's nothing fundamentally wrong with MSG.....

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the World Health Organization, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, MSG is a safe food ingredient. The controversy about MSG, however, arises from a number of anecdotal complaints since the 1960s about adverse reactions when consuming foods with MSG. The “MSG Symptom Complex” or the “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” includes symptoms such as headaches, flushing, sweating, numbness, chest pain, nausea, heart palpitations, and weakness. Still, researchers have not found any conclusive evidence that links MSG to any of these symptoms, though it is acknowledged that a small minority of people may have mild, short-term reactions to MSG. In addition, scientists cannot explain why natural glutamate, which is present in cheeses and hams, has not been associated with any symptoms, when the natural compound shares the same chemical properties as MSG. Although the stigma of this additive may still persist, the use of MSG and other related glutamates are generally perceived by the scientific community to be harmless.

I like to crack and egg or two into my Koka curry noodles. And sometimes throw in some meatballs (or fish/cuttlefish/shrimp/lobster balls) in for a bit more bite in my noodles. Oh, and extra curry powder makes the whole concoction taste that much better

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy these once in a while in particular those from asian supermarkets but there must surely be a failing in your diet if you can go through 30 of these over good fresh home cooking which is far more flavoursome than instant noodles?

I love koka, they have lots of flavour.
I am voting cold as these have always been 25p per pack in my local (just bought them yesterday) and I don't think a price increase is a deal.

What about it?

Has there been any MSG epidemics in Asia, or any evidence at all, to suggest that eating even the tiniest amount of the stuff is bad for you?

Like most things, if you over indulge it will probably be bad for you but perfectly fine in moderation.

It's just scaremongering to stop you buying 30p noodles and opt for a £5.00 ready meal instead.
CherryPickrr
31 Mar 13 #26
Absolutely right, sir. It's called "double-blind" test. MSG has been proven to have no effects even in large quantities even when tested against self-claimed MSG-sensitive groups. Shot themselves in the foot.

Not until you'll realised when you visit Asian/Chinese supermarkets as they will most certainly have a much larger range of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Singaporian, etc noodles on offer which you can buy in individual packs or whole box. In some cases, flavours that you may have never heard of. It's worth trying. Koka is Vietnamese.
