B & Q in store were pushing Verve multi purpose compost 3 x 60 litre bags (180 litres) for £12. Stacked close were Verve multi purpose compost 125 litres at £5.98.
So by buying 2 x 125 litre you get 250 litres for £11.96. Equating to an extra 70 litres for 4 pence less!!!
(I know the 125 litre sacks are a lot heavier, but if your on the bus its the same problem!)
I don't know if this is classed as a deal but a 'heads up' anyway.

Look out for growbags too.
They often work out a lot cheaper than bags of compost even though they contain the same thing.

Last year they were a Tenner for three bags from what I remember. I've also spotted the massive difference in getting the bigger bags.

Good price but poor reviews last year.
The topsoil is very poor too after they changed to the verve brand.

Thanks, I plan to do some planting of bulbs I picked up for £1 in b&q at the end of the summer.
Any suggestions for cheap plant pots that I can use before I build my wooden planter?

Go to an independent garden center and support small businesses. I used to work for an independent garden center and we offered 3 x 50L bags of levington compost with John Innes for £11.99, brilliant compost and better than this rubbish

I absolutely agree! I bought a big 125l bag fort seedlings and will NEVER again. I've been pulling put chunks of plastic, what looks like bits of shoelace and huge sticks! next time I will buy a better quality brand without solid lumps in! (however, I did buy because it was cheaper than the 3 for £12!)

I think it's still a great compost, yes it has changed but that is inevitable in order to reduce the peat content, however still retains water better than most others on the market. What do I choose 3 x 50lt (150lt) for £11.99 or 2 x 125lt (250lt) for £11.96 hmm I wonder! :man:

You'd be mad to buy this rubbish. Dry, lots of bark lumps everywhere etc.

If you've got room to grow plants you've got room for a compost bin then it's quality stuff and free.

Not really. I've a big (ish) garden and compost everything I can including 'bought in' waste (veggie peelings etc) and it takes years to get even 125l of good compost.

Our local tip gives out free compost that's made with the garden waste that people take there. Might be worth checking your local to see if they have the same sort of scheme.

This site also will let you know if your local council has any subsidised items such as compost bins and water butts:
I always get mine from Lidl maybe not the cheapest at £1.99 for a 35L bag but it is good quality peat compost and with the smaller 35L bags they are a good size for handling

i used this last year when i moved in to a new house and i dont know if it is poor quality or the huge amount of clay under the lawn/garden that made it appear worse as nothing would grow! Need to have another attempt this year if anyone can recommend any good deals for quality? i know there are a few comments on independant garden centres but there arent many/any in and around Carlisle?!:smiley:

I am a very keen gardener and I also have a allotment this is the worst compost I have ever used bits of wood stones plastic paper went to B Q to complain all I got form the garden manager was you have got a bad bag wont be using it again shudder to think what is in the other bag in other stores of B Q Danny

In my experience Verve compost now consists of plastic bag particles, wire, string, lumps of wood 8cms long, silverpaper, stones in excess and is not what I would call garden compost. More likely recycled household garbage.

I bought a bag of multipurpose compost today and I was so disappointed it was as dry as sawdust making it impossible to get wet . The plants I've bought are wonderful I've bought so many I was delighted with them.

Stopped using this over a year ago, I was sure it was killing my plants, stunting them at best! B&Q used to sell one of the best multipurpose composts on the market but obviously sourcing from recycled compost, probably from the councils and who knows what that contains in addition to the plastic and stones?
