Here is a link to the replacement tip shootomanUK found but on CPC not ebay.

Not to worry. Have some heat anyway as its a great price.

Are they rebadged, though, or just copies made to look as if they're made by Bosch? Their car charger seems very much like a CTEK, but it most certainly isn't.

I believe this is a rebadged Bosch soldering iron, and as such, you might want to try seeing if Bosch have spare tips.

I've done quite a lot of research on park side tools and it appears they are rebadged bosch tools. (like make 'Site' tools)

It bears too much of a resemblance to turbosquid.com/3d-…897 to be a coincidence!!!

This is an excellent buy IMHO. A big fan of Antex soldering irons however this particular offering from Lidl seems very well made comes with a good length of flex to and from the variable temperature base / soldering iron stand, has two bits and comes with two small coils of solder. Ideal for the occasional electronics repair - re-capping motherboards, PSUs etc. etc. Excellent value for money. Voted hot.

They are good sizes. The screwdriver blade is great for those bigger jobs.

I find the sponges that come with even £500 soldering stations are crap. The ebay ones are better, if you don't fancy taking it back.

I got my brother one of the cheap adjustable Maplin ones a few years ago. My brother tells me it serves the purpose for his needs, and he uses proper temperature controlled irons where he works.

It replaced his two fixed wattage Weller irons, plus he no longer needs to borrow my Antex iron. I've also borrowed his on occasion to use in preference over a fairly cheap, and very, very nasty/dangerous 50 watt iron I own.

I must admit I do marginally prefer my Antex to his Maplin iron, but it is not always the right power for the job.

I don't think it is really. A 25W standard iron will likely be better. I don't see the need for temperature control if it isn't thermostatic, and having the bulky base station is annoying when soldering away from a workbench. Regardless of what people say, it feels incredibly wasteful buying a soldering iron with only two tips.

19 Jan 13 #79
You are putting a lot of effort into posting about how many, maybe 10 posts here, trying to get everybody to share your opinion. You stated your opinion once, should be enough.
Now let people buy a £9 product with 3 years warranty, from Einhell, quite a reputable make.
The ALDI one I got has also screw-in tips, and I bet they will match.
Do you have the specific item? I have the one from ALDI for 2 month, paid £6 for it, so more then a few weeks I can report it is very good. I have another one, the cheapest chinese soldering iron I could buy ten years ago and the tip IS FINE.
It will last for years and years used for any kind for occasional DYI. If you use it for hours everyday means you have some kind of business repairing, and obviously you might go for something professional, which can cost up to £400 as already mentioned here.
Replacement tips? I will just buy another one from Aldi or Lidl, since it would be cheaper then buying replacement tips for the more expensive soldering irons/stations mentioned here, IF EVER NEEDED, but since my 10 y.o. tip is in perfect condition, I doubt I would ever need to replace it in a decade.

What? I've never seen a dimmer for less than 100W, and no common soldering irons are greater than that. If anything, the dimmer just would do nothing with a low load.

"I got one of those a few years ago. The heating element burned out very quickly so I took it apart. "

Did you?
Seems to me to be far more sensible to use the 3 year warranty.

Whatever the 'truth of the now' , they are still good value and a step up from what most people have.
pete_l
18 Jan 13 #75
I got one of those a few years ago. The heating element burned out very quickly so I took it apart. There was no temperature control, just a light-dimmer circuit (triac) that allowed the user to vary the power to the element.
With that iron, you could either have the temperature low and not break it, or you could turn it up a bit to the point where it would actually melt lead-free solder and wait for it to die.

18 Jan 13 #74
I don't get this forum at times, when you post useful info like Paolo has people get ridiculously defensive or even downright abusive about it.

Just because it's cheap does not make it a good deal, he is right that you cannot get tips for this, one of the reasons when it was on sale before I returned it.

Worth getting the temperature controlled ones from Maplins instead when they are on offer for like £14.99 (but don't quote me on that price)

For what its worth, it appears to be a PARKSIDE PLS 48 B1

Instructions here:- https://www.kompernass.com/admin/view/manual/ec5149a7ee70b5d427583e62430d766b.pdf

The dial is calibrated in 100 °C increments.

Product video in German here:- http://www.lidl.de/de/PARKSIDE/PARKSIDE-Regelbare-Loetstation-PLS-48-B1

I haven't found a source of spare tips yet, though you could try emailing the service centre. A couple of spare tips for my 25 watt antex iron would cost almost as much as this, so even if I can't find replacements, I wouldn't consider it a deal killer.

17 Jan 13 #69
Of course not, but with a soldering iron the last thing I'd think about when buying is getting replacement tips.
It's going to be use very infrequently so should last years and years, it costs £8.99, anyone buying this and intending to use it everyday ought to get a better one.
geekystar
17 Jan 13 #68
This seems like a good buy at this price. 48W should be hot enough for all electronics soldering work.

Regarding the tip issue, I have a very cheap 50W iron for many years and the tip is still ok. So it may not needs frequent replacement at all.

If it's temperature controlled (which I believe is not), it can easily be converted to PID control if you want the temperature to stay precise.

Personally, for fixing stuff.

Lot's of electrical items break due to bad solder joints. Apoligies if you already know, but essentially, the metal that keeps electricty running through something stops as there's no contact. Re-flowing (heating up) the solder often fixes it.

Going beyond that, you can somethime see a burnt out cap, buy a replacement & solder it in place. For me it's better than binning something. I managed to get another year out my Dishwasher with a little tinkering.

I have never replaced a tip on a soldering iron. Usually before that happens, I've either broken the iron or melted through the cord.
The tips DO last ages if you a) keep them clean - use a sponge thing to clean them, solder (rosin) is corrosive I believe? and b) dont leave them on longer than you need to.

17 Jan 13 #56
They need replacing regularly ? That is not correct, because it depends on how much use it gets!
One tip would last you for years, maybe 5 years if you use it once a month, as 99% of people here will anyway.
I am not sure why some people right in big capital letters do not buy and such, this is a very good buy, as most things from Lidl and Aldi. I bought the one from Aldi, that comes with a range of tips for wood carving, but it does not have the power regulator.

Treat the tips properly* and they should last a decent time.

Anyway, £8.99 for two tips and a free iron, that's cheaper than Weller tips!!

Chances are, the manual will give you info on where to buy new tips.

*Don't scrape the tip to clean it and don't use one of those paste 'tinning' pots you can buy because they contain acid that can rot the tip. Use only de-ionised (Battery) water on the sponge, not tap water. If it gets really dirty then RS (and others) sell a special tip cleaner that doesn't damage tips (Best way to describe it: It's like a brass scourer mounted in a metal ash tray)

Agreed, they know roughly what the temperature would be at certain voltages at room temperature. No way is this temperature regulated
jasee
17 Jan 13 #48
I see, I've not seen one like that. Obviously you wouldn't get accurate control of the temperature, it could be almost anything
mikerj
17 Jan 13 #49
What do you mean? I would honestly be surprised if it has any form of temperature feedback, either a simple thermostat style or PID type electronic control, since it is just too cheap. Even without this it's still perfectly useable for most non-critical jobs, but the tip temperature will only be very approximately what you set on the dial and will vary depending on ambient temperature and the size of the job you are soldering.

For instance Maplin sell this 50Watt temperature controlled solder station for £19.99 and it definitely is not temperature regulated in any way. A basic temperature controlled solder station from a well known brand such as Antex or Weller will set you back around £100 and from Metcal maybe £400 or so. I'm not suggesting anyone goes and buys one, simply that it's probably too much to expect the Lidl soldering station to have similar features.

Do you take a glue gun back because it has run out of glue sticks? Or a cutting disc off a grinder when it is worn down?
MikeLondon

Going_Digital
17 Jan 13 #44
The tips are not covered under warranty, they are consumables. They need replacing regularly, so if you can't get them you have to throw the iron away and buy another, not exactly the best way to go about things really. Most Irons have spare tips available for a couple of pounds.
MikeLondon
17 Jan 13 #45
It is very unlikely this has a thermostat.
john306
17 Jan 13 #42
I don't know you so why would I take your word for it that they are rubbish.
The cost is only £8.99 with 3 year warranty so why worry about replacement parts?

I will only use it infrequently so I'm sure it will be a good buy.

Thanks op heat added
MikeLondon
17 Jan 13 #43
Don't do this it is dangerous, the light dimmer can easily have a lower wattage. I used to work for maplin, those were actually not bad.
Going_Digital
17 Jan 13 #40
In this case you do get what you pay for. The funny thing is people often buy a cheap iron like this with the idea that they are just a beginner so don't need to spend much on an iron. The trouble is it is counter intuitive, as a beginner is far more likely to destroy things with a poor iron and then give up in frustration.

Soldering isn't terribly difficult but it does take some practice to get good heat contact with both surfaces to be joined and to know how long to hold the iron in place etc. I'm not suggesting spending a fortune, but a nice small handled iron with a good quality tip does make the job easier and the availability of replacement tips is essential if you plan on making much use of it.
pete_l
17 Jan 13 #41
I'd be very surprised if there was any sort of temperature control. These cheap adjustable irons typically just have the equivalent of a light dimmer circuit that controls the power to the element.

17 Jan 13 #36
Jasee - the only way you can adjust the temperature is by varying the power. This is true for thermostatically controlled irons as well, they just tend to do it by switching on and off.

I've not seen a sub £25 thermostatically controlled iron.

Trolling, as I understand it, is using inflammatory language to provoke someone? Like calling someone a troll for instance...

I'm giving honest advice using my experience of the product. Simple.

Now - where's your useful input on this specific 'deal'?
mikerj
17 Jan 13 #34
Power is very easily adjustable simply by changing the voltage across the element. You can do this with a standard fixed power, non-thermoststic soldering iron using a light dimmer switch.

If this really is thermostatically controlled it's a good deal, there are plenty of cheap temperature adjustable soldering irons that are not though (Maplins were selling them for a fiver a couple of years back).

I'm sure he's not that much of a bodger!

For the person who said the handles too large, may be your hands are too small :-)

For the person who said Solder thing = desolder pump. Although in some circumstances 'desolder braid' might be preferable.

Soldering electronic components usually requires a soldering iron of about 25Watts. If this 45W iron is only switching on/off rather than adjusting the voltage, it may be too powerful for delicate stuff. Although possibly better at removing components.

As long as you regularly add solder to the tip, remove it with a slightly moist/wet sponge (that's what it's for!), then add clean solder to the tip again as you're using it and always leave the tip with clean solder on it's surfaces before switching it off, then it'll last for years. Never sand, file or scratch the tip to clean it.
