Further to my deal posted on the starting date for pre-orders, CEX have now INCREASED their trade-in prices for the iPhone 5.

I know I was pushing at trolling Apple fans on the previous thread, but all jokes aside, this is now an excellent deal. Previously it was £10/£15 profit, now it's £35/£45/£50 profit.

CEX are offering the following:
---------------------------------------------

16GB Grade A: £565 cash (Any Network)
32GB Grade A: £645 cash (Any Network)
64GB Grade A: £750 cash (Any Network)

These prices are presuming your phone is still in Brand New condition, presuming that the majority of people can't have damaged their phones that much in less than a week.

Grade B prices are lower, but still generate a profit for the 16GB and 64GB models.
16GB Grade B: £540 cash (Any Network)
32GB Grade B: £580 cash (Any Network)
64GB Grade B: £715 cash (Any Network)

Grade C prices will lose you between £30 and £50 on Apple sale prices, but surely you can't have messed up a phone to that extent within 5 days?

Who is this a deal for?
-------------------------------------
The previous deal was used by people who purchased and decided they didn't like the phone.
People who receive these as unwanted upgrades on contracts. Forget eBay/Paypal with their £50-£60 fees, sell it straight to CEX.
People who already own an iPhone: sell to CEX and pre-order another from Apple for delivery in a few weeks.
Those who might have damaged their phones a bit in the first week to a B grade can sell and then re-buy a brand new one from Apple for a small profit and a 3 week wait.
Those who have a phone on a contract: sell your locked phone to CEX and buy a factory unlocked one from Apple instead, a free unlock, brand new phone and £35-£50 profit in the process. This improves resale value as you will have an unlocked phone with an Apple receipt.

Tips
--------
I doubt this will last long, so get in quick! If you place a Sell order online, bear in mind you will have to pay a bit for the insured postage, but the price will be reserved for 5 days if they do drop the prices.

If you plan to sell instore, I still recommend creating a Sell order on the website. If you get into the store and they have dropped the price by £50, you still have the option of selling online. Insured delivery services to this value will always be next day with Royal Mail, so you have 3/4 days from the creation of the order to ship it to still guarantee the price.

If selling instore, aim to get in at opening time. The phone has to be tested, if others get there before you and they have a back-log of phones/consoles to test, you might be given a 2-7 hour wait or even asked to come back the next day at peak times. The price you get paid will be the current price once testing has been completed, so if the prices drop, there is nothing you can do. At opening times, I've been told and by personal experience, they are more likely to have cash for you.

Sell quickly! They will likely have a trigger to drop the price once they have so many in stock. also, this is the second time they have changed the prices, so they might change their minds again fairly soon: it depends on how many people buy and how many sell.

Goodluck!

Just one request: please don't let this deal be flooded with arguments between Android/Samsung and Apple.

I wonder if scuffgate will work in CEX's favour, giving them licence to offer a grade B price?

I'm struggling to figure out how this is a good deal for CEX?

Why are they doing this.

Sure iPhone releases of the past have generated some profit through selling on eBay in the first few days / week or selling to countries who don't have Apple Stores but iPhone availability is better on this release than most past releases and it is being launched in more countries than ever.
pete1993 to oldskoo1

They have sold nearly all of the iPhone 5's they bought in on the previous prices of £540 buy and £595 sell for a 16GB within the first few days after release. They had about 15 in on the first day and sold nearly all of them at the selling price of £595... Because they were selling out so fast, they upped the sale price. Today they've increased the prices to these. They will no doubt still make a profit because of the very small minority of people who will pay stupidly high to get the phone now rather than in 3 weeks. :stuck_out_tongue:

you cannot walk into Apple Store with old dvds/games/consoles/phones etc... and trade them for an iPhone can you, thats why CEX are buying in for more and why people will pay more because its with laying around the house goods, goods that will more than double what CEX paid/traded for..

its a long term thing.

Sort of annoys me as my iPhone 5 came out of the box with scratches and I've already lost £75 because CEX will grade it as a class b product.

Oh we'll roll on my replacement next week hopefully no chips or nicks out of that one.

Mine was the same.. I found an issue with mine also. I had a small like.. pin **** dent to the back of the case (under screen cover) and also, under the lock button if you turn brightness all the way up and look between the phone and the silver band, the light shines through on mine, wondering if I should sell this one to cex (not noticeable unless you know about it), and then buy a new one + i'll have made a profit

There obviously is a market for it then

I'm surprised by the tiny margin they even bother doing it on such a small volume

But maybe they benefit in other ways
LordLardy
25 Sep 12 #10
What if they are selling those in markets where iPhone 5 hasn't been released yet. Surely there's a market willing to pay more than the RRP to get hold of it and to avoid the waiting time

Just thought it was more logical to trade your old stuff anyway and use the proceeds to buy an iPhone from an Apple Store once it has all calmed down.

The O2 shop in Cleveleys has 3 64gb in stock. You mean I could go and buy them on PAYG then take them to CEX for profit? Why would they pay more than RRP when they're still available in some places?

Hit them at the right time and you shouldn't have a problem, aim for opening times. If all else fails, just post it to them instead, they can't reject it on the basis that they don't have the cash as it's the online store and payments are being made via Bank Transfer and Paypal.

I have also been told that CEX staff are under orders to give iPhone 5 purchases higher priority because they are making a quick £60-£90 off each one.

When you do it online, you are at their mercy. They can easily say it is a Grade B phone even if it doesn't have a mark on it, and by the time you factor in the cost of RM Special Delivery, it is not worth it.

If its true though that they are giving iPhone 5 purchases priority then it might be worth a shot.

Staff prob wanted it for him self with discount. Wasn't long ago that some Manchester staff where booking in iPads under a different code which they created on system but set for less trade in values. They would then refund it out and sell it in under correct code and pocket difference. Few shops got court doing this

I've never had a problem with CEX online gradings.

I think the majority of the complaints come from people who over grade their phone themselves and then are annoyed when it's graded appropriately. :stuck_out_tongue:

False advertising by CeX, Crafty goths work at stores. Crap customer services. You can never get your money back if something goes wrong. I had to take them to court once before to get my money back few years back because a PC component wasn't compatible with my PC even though on the box it said it would be. They refused to give refund so I filed a Small Claim.

love it - so true also..around half my office are iPhone haters..claiming they don't want to be a sheep and to buy it just because it's an iPhone. Almost all of them now own an S3 and more are buying by the week..not one of them realises the irony there!

Anyway this looks like a good deal in theory - my problem would be trusting CEX. They never seem to have that much cash in-store (*always* offered their worthless vouchers) and mixed results from their online service. I wouldn't risk that much cash personally.

Similar happened with the iPad 3 launch. CEX had a similar pricing strategy to the iPhone 5, along the lines of £400 buy and £430 sell. Can't remember the exact figures, but CEX staff were using their staff discount to buy them cheaper than the trade-in cash value and re-sell for a profit, repeating numerous times. I know a few were sacked for that one..

Didn't hear about anything in Manchester though. :stuck_out_tongue:

it was when stores could add products to the system manually that where not already on the system, like peripherals a couple of franchise stores caught up in it and corp stores, and arndale was one that was mentioned to me. Another scam that was rife was skimming.

some takes loads of dvds in, staff skims a couple and misses them of the trade in, then waits and process missing ones and pockets the cash/voucher cex did a big clamp down on it, but still goes on

all the stores WILL have £500 to give you, fact. You go in at 9am and offer them an iPhone 5, they'll take it, they've all been told what to buy off the public as priority.

Well I went into the one by Birmingham New Street first thing this morning. They told me some bull about they had no money for cash due to not making enough money yesterday. Asked about CEX down the road, same with them.

They were more than happy enough to take my sealed IPhone 5 for credit note though.....as if I will get them something for basically nothing!!!

I'm tempted. I could upgrade now, sell the iPhone and buy a Lumia 920 SIM-free on launch with no need to mess around trying to sidestep any possible EE exclusivity deal. I'd also put £115 profit away in the process (or not as much as that once the extra £3.20/month for the iPhone contract is taken in to account).

If the Lumia turns out to be not worth bothering with, £565 still buys pretty much any phone on the market.
pete1993
26 Sep 12 #50
Would have had a higher chance at a bigger store. The new street store just sells phones and can barely fit 5 people inside. Try first thing at the main larger Birmingham store instead, or the Coventry store. :stuck_out_tongue:
pete1993
26 Sep 12 #51
Yes, already done it. Testing on the phone only takes 20mins, but if there is a queue for items to be tested, you could be waiting for hours: which is why it's best to get in first thing to you can be first in the line for testing.

More or less, walk in, show them the phone, they will give you an estimate of the quote and explain each of the gradings. They book it in for testing and give you a receipt, most of the time asking you to come back in 20mins/1 hour/10 hours, depending on the queue for tests. You come back after the time period, they tell you what they have graded it at and a solid offer for it. You can chose to accept and take the cash or decline and take the phone back.

Also, extra warning, my local stores don't seem to have Nano Sims available for the testing, so it would be best to take your own along just in case. If it's unlocked, take the Apple receipt.

As to knocking the price down, they will only do that if it's not in Mint condition. Grade A is literally Mint condition, it has any scratches or marks at all, they will grade it down to a B, if it has a large amount of scratching or small dents, or missing the box or some of the accessories, it will likely be graded down to a C. If they don't explain and show you why it's been downgraded to a B, then ask them: likely they have found scratches that you might not have.

Some people seem to have a very low opinion of CEX, thinking they downgrade phones without reason. I'm not sure if that means there are stores out there that deliberately do that, but my local stores have never been like that before. :stuck_out_tongue:

26 Sep 12 #52
Only two experiences with CEX - mansfield store graded a phone as an B, took it to Derby and they classed it as a C - reasons? Missing original accessories as the included charger was a different brand to the phone. No recognition that the inc charger was a brand new sammy one still sealed. I can't see any purchaser being bothered about this so found it a little pedantic, compounded by the fact Mansfield branch weren't bothered about it.

Must have found a store with incompetent staff. Yesterday morning my local bought a 64GB for £715 cash as the prices stated. Not had a problem in Birmingham or Solihull either. £540 was the old price, yesterday afternoon they increased the prices to the ones posted here. Maybe you were just unlucky and got to them as they were increasing the prices, so the system was playing up.

If you have any doubts that these prices aren't right, I was shown the email from head office about the price increase yesterday as it happened. :stuck_out_tongue:

Really bad experience with CeX and trading in high value stuff. (To be fair it's always been ok selling the stuff under £100)

I had a BlackBerry, 6 months old - wanted to trade in due to upgrading to an S3. It had not a single scratch on it, with all original box and accessories apart from 1 booklet (Quick Start Guide). It got graded a C for that. It's a joke.

I also went in the other day as i needed a stick of DDR2 ram fast. Not the cheapest but it was a reasonable price difference to get it straight away - they gave me server specific ram. I went back, they gave me DDR3 ram (listed as 2). Went back again and it was finally resolved. The excuse was "We usually have an IT specialist in who checks over our products, but he has been absent this week". ****, i seen that stick of ram last week you lying piece of marshmellow.

Don't get me started on the 4 day long repeated return trips regarding a ps3 controller charger... jesus.

CeX have an accumulated knowledge between them equivalent to that of my fish.

Hot deal though. Just felt like ranting about CeX

Pete1993 - you legend mate!
After getting a scuffed black iphone 5 i traded it for a white one, this also had a scratch, tiny dent and bled light through the edge of the screen/case, plenty pi$$£d off, especially considering three wouldnt do another swap, now I have £750, wasnt expecting grade A from cex but they put it through, now I can pocket some cash and buy direct from apple unlocked and keep opening them till i find a mint one!
On the other hand i feel apple have really taken the mick, there quality control is non exsistent and that apple dude schiller or whatever his name is saying, scratches and scuffs are normal makes it worse!

really considering sacking iphone and going elsewhere but hated my old galaxy s, not sure if it was android or the cheapy phone but my main thing is iTunes, main reason i love the iphone, decisions, decisions!

However word of warning upon opening up both new handsets in store they came out the box scuffed and with tiny gashes to the aluminium bevelled edge... so classed as B but still got £527 each. Be warned as there's lots of cases of damaged phones straight out the box... closer examination of my own i5 i noticed a couple scratches on that... so of all 5 I've had 4 were damaged out the box!...

Took mine to the glasgow store on friday to be told they had no money, went back yesterday and the person infront of my was selling his iphone 5, thought i was going to get told no money again, but nope they took the phone and tested it, 40mins later went back and it had been graded B, tinyest of wee black scuffs on the corner, looked like a biro pen had done it but i wasnt fuzzed sold for £701 (64gb). Took them about 5mins to get £700 out of all the tills but once they did i was on my way with a smile.

Phone bought with 3 on £42 a month one plan, £109 upfront.
-701 for phone, minus my £96 quidco thats been paid into my account

24 months with 2000min, unlimted internet (tethering included) texts and 2000 3 to 3 mins for £320 basically £13 a month.

Nano sim to micro sim adapter bought and now back to my old iphone 4 which i much prefer.

My dad's posted his iPhone 5 64gb to them saturday, cex should receive today. Tried getting the money at local store but was told they have no money!

What we need to know is how long does it take from them receiving it to the money physically going into our account?

Dad's always been an Apple fan but since the issues with the 5 (ie cracked/dented cases on new phones, not as good as the S3 etc...) he's decided to stick with his 4s till the 6 comes out or when he can get decent c/back on a 5 contract

True BUT at least the iPhone 64gb has at least twice the amount of storage (for apps) of that of the S3. The largest the current crop of S3's can do is 32gb - the external sd card is useless for apps (just for pics/vids/music only now)
