Choose a shirt, suit, tie and shoes... all for £75 + £5 postage. The deal got quite hot last time, plenty of choice and sizes too. I did notice the site going quite slow.

I've had a suit from these before. It's fantastic. Much better quality than other suits of the smae price in other stores.

Not sure why everyone is saying these are crap. Probably because they want to "fit in" and "sound cool", and possibly because they were attacked by suits when they were children?

This is a decent, inexpensive suit. If you had enough money to go around spending thousands of pounds on suits (as some people in the comments appear to) you could buy these to wear once and then chuck away.

If you're a normal person though, and you don't have a lot of money and don't have a job where you need to wear suits often, then these are ideal. Obviously if you wanted to, you could spend your life savings and sell your children to buy an organic, 100% free-range-spider-silk suit, hand-made by monks in the mountains somewhere, and yes it may be of better quality, but you could say the same about any clothes. For example, you could wear a carrier bag, or a normal shirt, or a designer shirt, each with a different price tag, but as long as you're wearing a shirt it doesn't matter. It only matters if you want to laugh at the poor peasants in the street while you ride past in your fancy suit and limousine, using £20 notes as handkerchiefs. In that case, why are you on a website that aims to give deals on stuff?

You not liking people using extremes is hardly important. Even if a thousand people came here and complained about me using extreme examples, it doesn't matter, because these suits are canny for the price.

People were complaining about the quality and about how they're cheap and I was using hyperbole in reply to exaggerate my comment. For the price of £75, these are good suits. If they cost £200 or £300 or more, then you would probably expect better quality.

I'm not "justify wearing a cheap suit" just saying it's ridiculous to complain that a fairly cheap deal for a fairly decent suit is crap because you could spend more money and buy a better suit. Or occasionally, if the stars align and luck is at your side, you can get a decent suit reduced in price to a more affordable level. Relatively speaking, this suit may not be great compared to more expensive suits, but compared to those of the same price, they seem good.

Just because a hypothetical future suit may be reduced in price, and it is the right colour (e.g. not grey if you want brown or something) and you manage to find where they are selling them, doesn't invalidate that this was a fairly good deal.

It's like someone saying "Shop-brand beans are reduced down to 15p" and you complaining saying you can buy better beans if you pay a pound, or if you wait 3 years (oops, my apologies, you don't like exaggeration) then some shop like Asda or Morrisons might reduce spaghetti hoops or beans and sausages down to 16p, so you have to keep an eye out.

It seems like you're the one with issues, specifically with 1) exaggeration, and 2) people discussing the actual deal

I picked up a £250 RRP Ben Sherman Kings for £59 today at suitdirect in Livingston designer outlet so it is possible to get a decent item at this kinda money but obviously you need to be lucky with sizing in these places. Point is it is possible to root out a suit bargain if you try.

So he's going to get married in a £75 suit and £190 shoes?

It just don't make any sense. Any style those shoes bring will be lost due to the poor quality of the suit.

Check out my deal here if he still hasn't bought it yet. MUCH better quality: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/howick-tailored-suit-75-98-delivered-was-250-house-fraser-1250925#post14841633

If money is a problem then do what some other people said: buy a decent suit that's reduced or on sale (e.g. Marks & Spencer, Debenhams etc) rather than paying for rubbish like this that actually clearly looks like rubbish.

I think slaters do suits from £49 to £350 and I am pretty sure they do tops brands such as aquascutum too. Good deal for one of the cheaper end suits when the alterations are free.

We are gonna try out slaters, as per recommendation from a few people at work, getting married in september and my htb needs a suit...... its how you wear and carry off the suit that can make it look good, And really if we get a suit for this price, it makes his £190 shoes slightly acceptable.

Maybe a noob question, I have a nice 100% wool suit jacket, but I haven't needed a suit for a year and a half and in that time have added about 10kg of the good kind, it now won't fit over my shoulders.

Are they easy to take out, or if I bought a £200 suit now and found I'd outgrown it in a few months/years can can't, that doesn't sound like a very sharp investment.

I agree but i hate when this site helps to promote fake bargains on rubish products. Like you said, this is no different to a supermarket suit.
Alfresco
21 Jun 12 #82
No. I'm sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about. Because something's expensive it doesn't make it a rip off. Making a profit isn't a rip off either, it's business.

Clothing retail usually works on a mark up of x2.5 So a retailer would buy a suit from the manufacturer for £100 and sell it for around £250. So the cost was £100 plus 20% VAT. Total £120. A full price sale of this suit gives them a profit of £130. Take away free alterations, staff costs, general running cost etc, not to mention that the retailer pays for their stock up front whether they sell it or not and is lucky to have even half of a seasons stock sell at full price, profits are absolutely minimal. Left over stock is then sold in a sale to claw back costs and clear the stock that didn't sell. It doesn't matter what price points you are trading at, the same profit margins apply. The reason you rarely see discounts of more that 50% is because 50% covers the original cost plus VAT of the product.

A fake sale is a product that costs the reatiler £20 and is marked up to £100 so it can be reduced to £50 making people think that they are getting a bargain when the retailer is making a full mark up on cheap rubish products. If it was genuine left over goods at reduced prices being sold at half price, they would have limited supply and be making NO profit. It's because people are ignorent to this that genuine quality shops are percieved as expensive and are closing down and we have huge overproduction of cheap disposable goods.

I really can't believe all the idiots on this website!

" I'd pay more for a pair of socks" etc etc. Lets not forget that there are also people out there who would scoff at your Austin Reid, M&S or Ted Baker suit so it is all relative.

You all need to stop voting on wether or not you would wear it, and start looking to see if its a good deal. TBH for £80 you could get a complete outfit from any supermarket or Primark so in my opinion it's not a good deal for what I would classify as a supermarket quality suit.

Everyone keeps waffling about 100% wool suits but in my opinion they wear very quickly, and are not practical if you wear a suit everyday for work on building sites, plant rooms etc. Unlike a good pair of shoes that can be re-soled, when suit trousers reach the end of their life the suit is no more. This type of suit has it's place (and not just for court appearances as some muppets have suggested) and as a consultant engineer I would use them for site vists etc. I would not however wear one to make a presentation to a blue chip board meeting.

We get the same "class" banter when anything like this is posted (including watches, cars, holidays, food etc) and people need to stop being so shallow and realise that not everyone can afford, or desires, the same quality of product, if there wasn't a market it wouldn't be on sale!
isitwineoclock
21 Jun 12 #80
No, Austin Reed charge an exorbitant amount over the year to have a sale at a realistic price. tempting customers through the door who think they are getting a bargain, when in fact, they are getting a good price for a suit, thats still expensive and excessively marked up. its called Marketing. Same as Slaters. they are are massive company with the ability to supply suits cheaply. We all know these £75 suits are not "top" quality, but they are still better quality to some people who can perhaps ill afford to spend much more to dress nice for what ever occasion they may be needing to dress up for!!

i think youll find when the suit supplier is selling the suits, they can come in sort of unlimited supply, tailored for you.

a bargains not a bargain unless you need it, and there are some people out there who cant afford to spend much more, but they still look alot smarter than some others who would roll up with a man a burton job on.

i personally would spend a bit more and get a better suit, because i could afford it, but if i couldn't, i know where my £75 would be spent.

21 Jun 12 #76
Absolute nonsense.
I do agree that a well fitted and well made suit is an investment. However, these cheaper suits are well suited (pardon the pun) to office wear. I've had woolen suits wear away at the backside of the trousers from sitting down on office chairs. No such a problem with the cheaper ones. I've had a couple of suits I've paid £40 for from Tesco (albeit in a sale) and coupled with a decent shirt and tie you'd never know the difference.
I also have a Hugo Boss suit that I like wearing when travelling on business but no way would I wear it most days as it wouldn't last too long.
Alfresco
21 Jun 12 #75
Fair point but all shops have at least 2 sales a year. Austin Reeds sale is genuine. Good quality suits with good discounts starting around £150 - £200 for the suit. This is a suit, shoes, shirt and tie for £75, so closing down or not, just don't expect much because realisticly you shouldn't even be able to buy a half decent jacket for this price.

Everyone likes a bargain but genuine bargains don't come in unlimited supply with a choice of sizes and colours.

Fake Bargain = Cheap Rubbish.

Lol, this type of thread can just go on and on......and on. Nobody is right - everyone has an opinion.

That said, I do think dar72 has some weird negativity about people wearing suits!! To the point that it almost seems obsessive lol. I am an accountant (average pay I would say) and can't imagine what clients would think if I walked into a meeting without at least a pair of trousers, a shirt, tie and shiny shoes!

As for IT 'support', I wouldn't expect our IT guy to come in with a fancy suit on, he's on the floor half the time trying to fix computers! That said, a smart pair of trousers, shoes and shirt cost no more, if not less than a pair of jeans, trainers and tshirt! So - I would rather the IT guy wear the trousers etc.

And as for cost - it is a fact that cheap suits look cheap and this CAN be bad. I try and buy all my work stuff in the Next sale (which is online practically all the time!) Forgeting the jacket for a moment, I often pick up their Italia leather shoes for £30, 100% cotton shirts for about £14, smart silk tie for about £5 and a pair of decent quality trousers for about £20. You don't always need a jacket if you have a smart/casual coat so you could get what I have just listed for about £69!

Lol. So you would trust anyone dressed in jeans and a polo shirt that calls you mate? I think you would do well to reevaluate your technique in identifying a liar.

Politicians etc. have historicly worn suits for the same reason you say you wouldn't trust someone for wearing one, because public opinion was that someone in a suit is professional. Public opinion is changing so these same people are dressing more casually. The clothing isn't the criminal and there are more scientific ways to manipulate peoples perceptions than clothing.

A better rule for life is, never trust ANYONE in the public eye.
dar72
21 Jun 12 #67
No, not everyone in a suit is a liar, a lot are just conformists. What I'm saying is, it gives the impression that someone isn't trustworthy, even if it's a sub-concious one, because people in suits are always affecting people's lives in a negative way. I'd never buy from someone in a suit, if a salesman comes up to me in the town in a suit, I ignore them and walk past, if someone in normal clothes approaches me, I might listen before politely telling them I'm not interested. I have a similar attitude to people calling me "sir", I'm not a commissioned officer of HM Forces and I don't have a knighthood, nor do I want either, calling me sir is an insult and a pathetic attempt at trying too hard, probably to cover up for something.

A suit is the outfit of a criminal, people in suits are criminals and it's a perfect example of how capitalism is a failure and always will be, what someone is wearing doesn't matter, it's what they do that matters. Oh well, at least the enemy identify themselves to us with their suits, if they all dressed normally we wouldn't know who the criminal scum bankers are!

Suits aren't comfortable, they don't look good (come on, be honest, they look stupid). It's funny watching all of the overweight businessmen sweat like pigs in summer in their stupid outfits.

A good rule for life is, never trust a man (or a woman) in a suit.

Alfresco
21 Jun 12 #63
I'm pretty sure Slaters are closing down. This seems like an attempt to make a bag of money before they close. Slaters are a class business but are not known for selling such poor quality suits. I'm guessing future "free" alterations or even returns would be out of the window. There are plenty of cheap rubish suits on the market so don't be fooled because this is from Slaters.

Plastic Suit, Plastic Shoes, Poly Shirt and Tie for £75. Good price if it's all you need but you'll get what you pay for.

Ps. The brand name is their own so they can have it put into any suit that they sell.
RoyalVilla
21 Jun 12 #62
I'm sure this is just an attempt to troll, but
If someone came to an interview wearing these clothes I would be happy that they'd presented themselves in a professional manner. My main concerns would be their enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and their ability to fit well and help help achieve collective objectives.
If this is what you can afford, then fine. Having said that, if you're going to wear suits regularly for work I'd recommend getting the highest wool content you can afford and initially having 2 suits to wear in rotation. A second pair of trousers is also a good investment. Look out for sales - M+S are good + they sell the trousers separately. As you can afford more you can start to look at suits with canvas construction (as opposed to fused). Buying good quality, Goodyear welted shoes can also be a good investment if cared for and worn in rotation. Good deals can often be found if you're patient. The value of this deal might not buy one of the shoes I'm wearing today, but they could last 15 years+.

Slaters suits are very good.Hard wearing, good service to boot.
If you want a suit at a cheap price, then this is great value, you could also spend £20, £40 more and get a cracking suit that lasts years. they have a massive selection.

but, it you want to be daft, pop next door to Austin reed and they will gladly take at least £450+ from you for the same suit. (unless it sale time when its more affordable, but they still have the same suits more expensive!)

My Father in law has an old skool austin reed account, and my husband get a suit or two now and again from them, at sale time, i like them though, they look good, but so do the suits from slaters next door at half the price. there isnt as much choice and they are very very much overpriced. Slaters sell church shoes, they are so much more expensive than next door at Slaters.

If you can afford to spend a but more, then get a more expensive suit, but for those on a budget, or have to wear a suit every day, isnt it better to have a few cheaper suits to replace frequently when they are done in, or a more expensive suit thats worn to the bone day in day out to get your moneys worth out of it. i know who would look like Rab C Nesbitt . Fur coat no knickers!

some people have to be sensible with money, not everyone can afford to pay over the odds. Its like M&S - the chicken all comes from Moy park - and its all packaged and sent to Tesco, co op, M&S in a different wrapper.

Good deal for those on a tight budget or if you don't want to spend a lot because you rarely wear a suit. You wont get a better fitting one for the same price (thanks to the FREE alterations). For all those talking about this suit being cheap etc, erm... that is kind of the point of it. well done for pointing that out.
If you want an better quality suit, go into a store and ask to see the better quality suits!
Nobody is forcing anybody to buy a cheap suit just cause it's on offer, but it is nice to have the option to get a well fitted suit & good service for £49.

Here's what I'd do...

£110 100% wool suit from here:
http://www.slaters.co.uk/charlton-gray-jn732826-suit-19

M&S Outlet regularly have Autograph suits for around the same price.

Then shop for shirt and shoes from M&S Outlet and TK Maxx.
I got a pair of Autograph Italian leather shoes for £25 from M&S last month.
There were tons of very good shoes from their M&S Man range for the same price.
I got a Savile Row shirt from TK Maxx for £8 in their clearance section.
That theoretically leaves you £7 to find a silk tie from somewhere to get everything for £150.

Almost twice the price of this deal admittedly, but if you're not on an uber-tight budget and want to feel confident in what you're wearing, it's worth doing.

LMFAO! Because I'm in IT I must smell and be single? Women have never been a problem, been with my current partner nearly 5 years now. Don't smell, eat very well (had gammon, haggis and pasta last night :P), but I also cycle a lot and don't snack. I also don't wear a suit, even a £50 one, so no fear of static. I'm a senior developer, not a repair guy.

I care how I look, to my own standards. That means not buying something because its in style or has the correct label on, but buying what fulfills its proper function. I spend more time hiking/camping than I do in suits, so they are a kind of pointless investment. Plus I'll never get a job working for Ray Davies in the suit I do own, which is a good thing.

EDIT: You seem to have me pegged as comic shop guy off the simpsons, but slim. I'm sure you are aware that fat people sweat a lot more, and therefore are more smelly? :P

Well that speaks volumes if you are an 'IT geek' and dont care how you look (personal hygene? Girlfriend?)

Maybe if you spent a bit more of your time eating properly rather than playing wow, you'd fill out a bit.

Word of advice, dont stand too near any of the PSUs to your PCs in your £50 suit. The static charge may arc the whole building out.

Never paid more than £50 for a suit! OK, it was a £120 one in a sale, but thats not the point. But why would I, I've not worn a suit since I had my interview for this job over 3 years ago. I'm an IT geek, and I don't see customers anymore, so who needs an expensive suit? If I wore one regularily I'd want a good one, but like an awful lot of the population I'd be lucky to wear one once a year.

As to all the hah hah, you look poor comments, I'm not. I just have seriously different priorities, and bragging I have money by spending silly amounts on clothing is not one of them. I'll happily spend £250 on a jacket that is waterproof and breathable and packs down very small in a rucksack without really caring about how it looks, but I won't pay more than £50 for a suit jacket just because it allegedly looks nicer.

Just for suggestion. If you have about £200 to spend on a decent suit, check out Austin Reed's sale. You can get an all wool suit from £150 and their suit are decent for high street retailers. Marks and Spencer make good suits too (make sure they are 100% wool) and they are sometimes on sale. Austin Reed is what I suggest though. But remember, you will most likely need to get the suit altered to fit you and the alterations are not free.

2 good suit is better than 5 cheap ones. You should be getting a navy and grey and you are all set. They should be 100% wool.

Slater is good for their free shortening alterations. Their CS sounds knowledgeable but in the end, they are there to make the sell so don't trust them too much. I bought a suit 2 sizes too big on me when I was young just because their salesperson who was over 50's poor suggestion. Now I know better and research on my own before I buy anything expensive.

What a stupid post. I can't stand it when people argue using extremes. So the choices are a £75 suit or one costing thousands? Yeah, that's what we've been talking about. Nothing in between whatsoever. ####'s sake.

You've made a massive post with an attempt at a humorous rant over something that has never been said. Far from people suggesting to buy better suits having issues, I'd suggest you're the one with issues here. That long, rambling post was unprovoked. Basically it sounds like you're trying to justify wearing a cheap suit to yourself.

A good suit is priceless. One that fits well, made of quality material and well tailored will look good, feel fantastic when worn and make you feel comfortable. They will also last and wear well. Same goes for a decent pair of shoes, ones that can be resoled and reheeled will last years and save you money in the long run. Barratts have some Loake on sale at the moment, well worth a look.

Like it or not the way you dress and the clothes you choose to wear is a statement to the world of who you are, who was it once was said 'clothes are the furniture of the mind'. For many people clothes simply demand some effort, for example would you attend an important business meeting in a cheap suit and cheap shoes? Not advisable if you are trying to promote the quality of your goods or services to a potential customer. Its common sense and simply call it standards if you like to dress as well as you can for a given occassion, a cheap suit will look like a cheap suit, in other words you cant make mutton look like lamb.

Fact....we all make our buying choice's according to the depth of our pockets and if you are on a tight budget and need a suit with the trimmings included then arguably yes this is a very good deal to be had. However, if money is no great constraint to buying a good or excellent quality suit with a really nice pair of pair leather shoes you just wouldn't bother with this deal, why would you? Who would choose a bargain basement suit unless they really had to? That's like saying....well I can easily afford the Maldives this year but really Benidorm should be good enough.

A suit is a suit is a suit. Only wear them if you have to, price & quality doesn't matter.

Great, a suit, now I can look like a criminal!

I wouldn't give anyone a job if they're wearing a suit, if they feel the need to wear such a ridiculous outfit, they must be trying to make up for something like a lack of real skills. Also a suit gives someone the image of being untrustworthy, think about it, people in suits rip people off and lie to them all the time, politicians wear suits and they're liars, why would normal people want to wear them?

So people wouldn't recommend these shoes for a prom? I have a suite already, just shoes I need, and £12 seems good?

i do agree the plain black suit looks awful, but one of the pin striped suits looks really nice.
dean_brfc
20 Jun 12 #31
Just anywhere really. I always have a quick look in the sale section for suits when I'm out shopping for clothes. If I find one in my size that I like then I'll get it, I know I'll need it at some point. Think my last one was from Topman with 70% off.

I bought a cheap suit once when I had my first interview and wouldn't do it again after buying better quality ones. Thing is I don't want to pay much as I rarely need them.

Unless you desperately need one now just wait for the sales, you can pick up a £200 suit for this price if you're patient. I've got 2 nice suits and paid this amount.

Which sales are these? I'm fairly new around these parts so I'm not really aware of any imminent price drops that can be expected on suits.

Agreed. And manmade is a bad thing? Saville Row might disagree - though I accept that the manpower on this is more likely to be of the Far East variety. But I still think this is a good deal for those who can't afford better and need to make some effort to dress for work.

The problem is cheap suits tend to look like cheap suits and you can say much the same about shoes....this is clearly a great deal if your budget is tight but if spending isn't a particular constraint I can't imagine why anyone would choose this.

They do make some really good 100% wool suits over £100.

Top quality!

If you only spend a decent amount of money on one thing, spend it on a suit. A well fitted suit cannot be beaten, some cheap nasty manmade one is not worth your cash.

I have had quite a few Charton Grey suits from Slaters and they are good quality, hard wearing. I would recommend them. If you live near I would try inside, they are very helpful and friend, excellent customer service.

The trouser sizes are based on the suit size -6, for example choose 40R and you will get 34R in trousers.
