Rarely does Illy get discounted so thought I'd bring this to your attention:

Spotted this in Morrisons. Good price as usually ~£3.50 for the 125g

Is £5.89 elsewhere from what I gather.

Both ground and espresso varieties were available in the Leeds (Kirkstall) store.

Decent deal for the best coffee you can get on the high street I think.

But and its a big but, if you like decent coffee check out http://www.ravecoffee.co.uk and buy some proper fresh roasted coffee. It is sooo much better than supermarket stuff you will never want to go back.

And for the people sayihg oh cold deal I can get a kilo of coffee for 5p in my local Crap-O-Mart well that great but it does not stop this from being a good deal on illy coffee!

This is a great deal for Illy, pity there are no Morrisons in Northern Ireland.

Hot price, Illy is pretty acceptable coffee in my book, i've never thrown any of the cannisters they come in yet, too good, they deserve a second life! ..good screw tops, makes for excellent value as a reuseable container.

Hot, great deal. This is £5.89 in local Sainsburys and everywhere else. Off to buy a couple of cans, should be high as a kite tonight!!

Really good coffee that is standard in many coffee shops. As has already been said the cannisters are brilliant for storing things in. I buy other coffee and put it in them and then in the freezer to keep coffee fresh. Because coffee has a lot of oil in it doesn't freeze.

Do you know if the beans are reduced as well or is it just the ground coffee?
jhw
6 Jan 12 #7
It's still overpriced, even at £3.89.
Newbold to jhw
6 Jan 12 #9
It is. There are much cheaper alternatives which are as good, or better. One of them is even in a tin.

Buying branded coffee beans is a mug's game.

Lovely coffee at a cracking price but can't beat Lavazza.

I love the taste of illy, more so than Lavazza. Heat added, great price

Nice coffee but ridiculously overpriced. Especially compared to the Sainsbury's Lavazza offer on at the moment.

Hot price.

Prefer Lavazza myself.

It's ground coffee beans, innit?
Tesco's cheapest does me at LESS THAN half this "reduced" price!
Can't immagine this tasting 2 or 3 times better.
Gotta be cold for me.
Iced! In fact!

I used to think this was nice until I bought fresh beans and ground them myself. Night and day people. Try these guys if you want genuinely good coffee http://www.coffeebeanshop.co.uk/index.htm

I'm with ya on that one. Beans are miles ahead of pre ground. Like Costa Cofees beans myself, along with Lavazza but might pick some of this up myself.

Why do people vote cold because they don't like the brand or because they prefer kwik save's no frills budget equivalent?

That'd be like saying all I drink is cola so this is cold for me...

Any way rant over, great price for a great coffee... Hot for me (even though I prefer cola)!
conradish to james52
6 Jan 12 #17
Don't see a mention for "Kwiik save". Lavazza is a quite comparable coffee and under £3.00 as a standard price. Often on offer for less. I quite like Illy, but never buy it because its stupidly expensive, even with the offer here, I agree with others, still overpriced.

Good price, heat added, but I agree with the comment that Lavazza is nicer! The standard Lavazza Rosso is my favourite...

Just go to a proper coffee shop where they tell you when the beans were roasted on the bag. Grind and drink within 2 weeks.

If anyone thinks this is a bargain they need. a lobotomy, and a spell in the loony asylum. Morrisons are not cheap, and their ground coffee is as dear as Harrods,- if you want cheap good coffee, in fact an excellent coffee go to Lidl, the every day price is just over £1.50 for 250grms. B M Home stores are even cheaper when they have stocks, last year they were selling Regal Ground Coffee for 79p which is normally £2.50 upwards.

Grinding your own beans is of course the way to go. However grinding them right takes practice. And grinding is not always practical. We have a coffee machine at work but I don't think the sound of a grinder would be appreciated. However at home I always grind right before use.

Not all beans are the same, even if they are all arabica. They have been roasted by the time they get to you. How this is done, and how they are then packaged, and what are the timescales involved, will affect the taste of the final product. Analogy - there are people making wine from Merlot grapes in both France and Bulgaria. The results are not the same.

Lavazza is a perfectly good every day coffee, I don't dislike it. But it is not as good as Illy. That is not to say Illy is good value, usually it is not. I don't buy Illy very often because no matter what they are doing to it, they cannot warrant £6 a tin. However it is very much worth the smaller premium at £3.89 so I will be stocking up.

anybody know a good cheap fine ground coffee?
Newbold
7 Jan 12 #29
Isn't the real point here that, much like sausages, everybody has their own favourite coffee? Some like Illy, some like Lavazza, and some like other blends.

I use beans from various suppliers - all dramatically cheaper than Illy or Lavazza, but every bit as good. Some of the blends are even created to taste exactly like Illy or Lavazza and (unsurprisingly) they do - at a fraction of the price.

If you want a branded coffee, that's fine. But you pay a big premium for the brand and all its advertising - and you can get almost exactly the same coffee blend for not much more than half the price with a little very enjoyable research.
Pluun to Newbold
7 Jan 12 #35
I agree......almost.
I've tasted some naff coffee in my time.
So I don't find thwe thought of trying diferent coffee "enjoyable".
As I agree with you about dear "Named" coffee, I just started at the cheapest on the shelf and "viola!" as they say in France, I found one I like early on.
As I am happy with my choice there is no way I will spend "waste" more on premium price coffee.
As I said before "It's only coffee beans". :smirk:
And as I have also said before, it's the "Emperor's new clothes" :smirk:

It is fine ground, isn't it?
Otherwise just buy some beans and take them to a local (independent) coffee shop and tell them exactly how you want them grinding and they'll do it

7 Jan 12 1 #32
No matter what you drink this is a great deal. Illy is a fine tasting coffee....Try the Black label, way better than a lot of other brands. As for Lidl and other cheap versions...yes cheap, but the strength and taste can not come anywhere near.

7 Jan 12 #33
Good deal this, I am loving the people critise this deal but have posted links to other websites that the coffee is more expensive and that doen't even include postage.

Bare in mind with this coffee the tin it is stored in means it is kept fresh for ages.

Loving the "I can get a bag of beans off the man down the street for 50p", doesn't mean its good!

My questions to OP:
- Is it beans?
- Was there many more in Kirkstall? Its only down road, might pick some up (Don't want to venture to the gimmer fest if theres none left or is ground)
cristoff to feeder16
7 Jan 12 #36
Just the ground and espresso when I was in there, got up late today and was meant to go in and stock up on some more.

There were loads left as most people in all honesty will still just buy cheap coffee...
MassiveBongFace to feeder16
7 Jan 12 1 #37
I know what your saying but I did say I think this is a decent deal and the link I posted was not supposed to be a deal just may give some people a chance to buy some fresh roasted coffee.

Not everyone buys everything purely on the price. Sure its not cheap but coffee for me is one thing I really enjoy and I like to buy and enjoy the best I can

7 Jan 12 #34
I've not tried the coffee sold in Lidl, is there any particular one that's best to try?
Newbold, what's your suggestion then for beans to give something similar to Illy & Lavazza then?

Just back from Morrison's where I bought the Illy Espresso and a pack of the Lavazza. I doubt I'll buy it the former again at the price, but I thoroughly enjoyed the cup I've just had.

I think it's the ground coffee only, didn't notice any beans?

Are some coffees massively overpriced? Yes.
Does that mean they are all the same? No.

At £5.89 this is a massive rip off. At £3.89 it is only a minor rip off. Since I like this product but won't buy it full price, that makes this a hot deal for me.

always wanted to try some of this stuff but didnt want to pay the full price so picked some up yesterday.

atleast the tin will be useful

Right.
I've tried it and I like it and so does my neighbour.
I bought the Rich Roast one in a red/brown packet and I use two rounded scoops (tablespoons?) per mug, not per mini, silly, nancy-boy coffee cup.
Mind you, just because we like it, doesn't mean you will but I prefer to test something costing £1.79 than something at £3.89.
Good slurping !
