Good price for a double kit, and great if you want to add 3 or more - 1 Day Only promotion - Don't forget your WHOPPING 1% cashback from the cashback site of your choice...blurb:

TP-LINK's Powerline adapter TL-PA211 takes advantage of your homes existing electric wires to transfer data while transferring traditional power. That means, with no additional wiring required, users can simply plug the TL-PA211 into existing power sockets and establish networking infrastructure in a flash. With high-speed data transfer rates of up to 200Mbps, you can enjoy HD video streaming, online gaming, VoIP or any other high bandwidth intensive tasks all at the same time now.

Super Small Design
With the new ultra-compact housing design, TP-LINK TL-PA211 is much smaller than most other 200Mbps Powerline Products. At just 30mm thick and with its high quality, elegant white shell, it almost blends in completely in front of any power outlet and additionally can be placed anywhere in the room.

Up to 200Mbps, 300 Meters
With advanced HomePlug AV technology, TL-PA211 provides you stable, high-speed data transfer rate up to 200Mbps on a line length up to 300 meters. Together with the built-in Qos and powerful AES encryption, TL-PA211 is such a good choice for a whole home solution to connect all network compatible devices--from computers and game consoles to set-top boxes for IPTV to printers and NAS hard drives--and supplies them with broadband Internet.
The PLC connection is transmitting the data through the electric wire between two outlets, so it at least requires two PLC adapters plugged into the outlet to transform the data streaming. With twin pack design, the starter kit ensures to establish a Powerline network for the first time.

Power Saving Up to 65%
The TL-PA211, a new-generation Powerline Adapter, with its logical practical product designs and sophisticated Power-Saving Mode, it now consumes less power when compared with existing Powerline Adapters. When there is no data transmission or reception occurs over a certain period of time, it will automatically switch from its regular Working Mode to Power-Saving Mode that will reduce the energy consumption by up to 65%*.
*Actual data will vary because of the network conditions and environment factors.

Anyone know if i could mix this with a different branded 85mps plug?
martyj999 to jools2001
12 Oct 11 #5
I asked that question before and was told no, not backwards compatable with different transfer rates, could be wrong though
dmm1000 to jools2001
12 Oct 11 #19
no - 85's and 200's cannot interact on the same network

BUT- you can set up any number of 85's (2+) and any number of 200's (2+) on the same mains ring - creating 2 separate networks where the 85's "see" the 85" and the 200's "see" the other 200's - but different speed plugs wont "see" each other on the same mains ring (or network)

Great deal
I wonder if someone could answer a couple of queries I have on this subject?

1. I currently have a pair of Extra Value 200Mbps adaptors, has anyone actually got experience of running mixed brands of these. I have heard people say it should be possible but no conformations.

2. I have 4 components (TV, wii, media player & Blu ray) around the TV that I would like to link up to my router in another room (powerline adaptor already connected) . I would only utilise 1 connection at a time. Would the best approach be to get a single powerline adaptor and attach that to a separate 4/5 way router or is there an alternative.

What you need is a switch. Plenty of cheap ones on eBay or tech websites like ebuyer, scan, etc

I don't know a lot of about mixing homeplugs but I do know that all aren't comaptible with each other as different manufacturers use different specifications. There's currently no industry standard like there is for wifi devices.

Hi, I've read the description and I'm still not sure. Seen them come up before but don't want to waste money on something that won't really benefit me. Can I just plug one of these in to get a more even broadband speed for playing online games?
martyj999 to mightykaboosh
12 Oct 11 1 #8
I have noticed the gaming on my asus 200mbps adapters to be more consistant but not vastly improved - with the wireless connection I WILL have more stutters than with the adapters but the overall performance for the most part stays the same - the main benefit is a guaranteed connection at all times and a better performance at a greater distance from the router.

From what I have read most of the 200mbps adapters should be compatable but the BT/Comtrend adapters are not
MrWani to mightykaboosh
12 Oct 11 #9
These do not impact your broadband speed, but allow you to make a wired connection from your router to your console (or other equiptment) by utilising your in house eletrical wiring rather than running a network cable. You have an adaptor at each end and a network cable from the adaptor to your equiptment. A wired connection will usually be faster and more stable than wireless so yes would improve gameplay but not beyond the your original broadband capabilities

im a bit confused ! Is this item a plug and play which gives you internet access of a speed of 200Mbps ??
RichArab to STi_prodrive
12 Oct 11 1 #17
It gives you connection speeds up to 200mpbs on your home network. Your access to the outside world will be constrained by the speed of your actual connection to the outside world. You plug one adaptor into your router using ethernet cable and then into a wall socket. Then other adaptor(s) on the same electrical circuit can be plugged in and connected via ethernet cables to other devices e.g. television, printer, xbox, etc.

May be a silly one but have to ask - will it work with lets say 6-way 3m long extension cable or does it have to be connected straight to the wall socket? And if it worked as one of many devices on that cable - will the speed be affected?
martyj999 to Paq
12 Oct 11 #20
From my own experience you should be plugging these directly into the wall socket for best results, they just wont work with an extension lead with any form of surge protection.

In most cases wireless 802.11n is much faster (I have read up to 7 times faster in some cases) than using powerline adapters especially when they are connected on different wiring circuits (most houses have atleast 2 circuits usually upstaires and downstairs circuits) so if you were planning on connecting between a router downstairs and a device upstaires I would consider wireless rather than powerline adapters.
Spies to Sirez

Wireless in my house used to be fine, but as of late it's gone really really terrible, it seems like when I'm using my xbox and turtle beach headphones it kills my wireless bridge (which is already weak signal). I've tried all different channels and I get the same problem.

So in an attempt to resolve this I'm going to connect my two routers together and have 2 separate access points at each end of the house.

Is there any technical difference between buying the twin pack, and buying two singles ? Or do you need to start with the twin pack, then you can add singles on top ?

I also have mine in 4 way gang sockets at both ends one on an upstairs circuit one on the downstairs. Have streamed DVD quality films (4GB files) from my PC to a DLNA compatible TV with no problems. Also plays YouTube videos no problem. I have no idea if the speed is reduced by the use of adaptors and dont care as long as it works. Note neither gang socket is surge protected as I'd heard that may be an issue for the signal.

I'm currently using the Extra Value adaptors but note they are big units and take up 2 sockets. Hopefully these are slimmer, for a bit more you can also purchase pass through sockets so you don't lose one.

I have the problem that wireless N simply cannot transmit 1080p Hd content directly from my server in the average house even with the best kit.

This seems the solution to connect a HTPC to the server without trailing cat6 cable.

Problem is they're not gigabit so surely 100Mbps is the highest transfer speed - Ok suitable for the task but the newer 500Mbps are they going to be faster and be therefore more future proof for streaming Higher quality HD content

Doubtful, buy some from eBay / Amazon, they're about £1.50 for 1/2m

Thanks OP, ordered 2. I've got Comtrend ones at the moment and they don't give me my full connection since I upgraded to 30MB Virgin and they're massive so think it's time to try some new ones out!

P.S. Like most powerline adapters these are only 200Mbps between the units, once it gets to your actual device it can't go over 100Mbps as they only have 100Mbps Ethernet ports on them, and most people will only use Cat5e cable that is rated up to 100Mbps too.

These powerline plugs are HomePlug AV compliant (Upto 200Mbps). How much you require all depends on how much bandwidth you utilise on your internal network i.e. how many people are going to be streaming stuff at the same time/transferring data simultaneously.

Blu-ray raw data tops out at ~53.95 Mbps, so unless the signal and/or hardware is rediculously poor, an 802.11n connection should've had no problem streaming it smoothly. I've managed it on an 802.11n and 802.11g connection before. Granted, on the latter I had to stop everything else on the PC to ensure it was stutter free.

200Mbps plugs will allow ~3 people to stream blu-ray quality data at the same time, with allowances for others to still transfer data over the network if required.

I've been using these powerline plugs for months now, and not had one single problem. I get an average throughput of ~190Mbps. The massive plus of these over the others on the market is, they don't get overly hot, thanks to their power-saving mode. Even the ones that are on constantly for weeks at a time don't get hot to the touch, which is always reassuring for longevity.

To confirm, the TP-Link TL-PA211Kit (Set of two plugs) does indeed come with two ethernet cables in the box, although they're only short.

Pairing Instructions

Plug two into sockets next to eachother and turn them on.
Press and hold the pairing button on the bottom of plug 1 for ~6 seconds, then release - The power symbol should begin flashing.
Press and hold the pairing button on the bottom of plug 2 for ~6 seconds, then release - The power symbol should begin flashing.
Once the two plugs have paired, the powerline LED (symbol that looks like an arrow) should light up solidly, as well as the power symbol.

To join a third plug to the network, plug the third plug into a socket near the other two.
Simply press and hold the pairing button on the bottom of plug 3 for ~6 seconds, then release - The power symbol should begin flashing.
Press and hold the pairing button on the bottom of plug 2 ~6 seconds, then release - The power symbol should begin flashing.
Once the third plug has paired with the other two, the the powerline LED (symbol that looks like an arrow) should light up solidly, as well as the power symbol.

Repeat for plug 4,5,6 etc. Once the plugs are paired, you can move them to whatever socket you wish.

To remove one, or more of the plugs from the network. Whilst the plug is turned on, press and hold the pairing button until the power light goes out momentarily (~10 seconds) and release.

- TP-Link TL-PA211 User Manual (PDF)

- Latest version of WinPcap (Required to install the Powerline Utility)

- Download the Powerline Utility
*Allows you to rename the plugs
*Check throughput speeds
*Add the passwords for each plug, which then allows you to set all of the plugs to a private network name of your choosing. Just incase your neighbours are using the same plugs too, wouldn't want them accessing your network now would you? :stuck_out_tongue:

i have a dell laser printer that can run on either USB or ethernet cable.
I keep the printer in my room, but if I am downstairs and want to print stuff I msut come up, plug in the printer to laptop and print.

If i bought one of these, would it mean I could plug my printer directly into it via ethernet cable and then anything I print anywhere in the house will be recieved and print of its own accord ??

13 Oct 11 #97
You would need to buy two. one to connect to the router and one in the upstairs room connected by it's ethernet connection to the printer.
The big advantage of a network connection is if you are using computers using windows, you do NOT have to turn on file sharing on the computers that you want to print to it.
Also, of course, any computers connected wirelessly to the network will be able to print to it.

Not sure if i want two of these.

Looking at a flat yesterday and the internet only works in one telephone socket, plugging the router/phone into another socket with the filter doesnt work, so i cant reach the router from where the pc will be.

I have a laptop and a pc but the pc is not wireless enabled, i have a alfa networks dongle and the router will only be a short distance away on the same floor, im tempted to just leave it at wireless but i must have reliability, i will be using the pc for betting/trading so really need the connection to be reliable.

It'll depend on your router and other parts of your wireless environment. However, I'd say that wired connections are almost always more reliable than wireless. If you wanted the most reliability, you'd buy a £100-200 router and run Ethernet cable from it to your PC. However, these would be a sensible compromise I'd say.

 As routers go, you've done well there then :-). I'd imagine that you shouldn't have any stability problems with the router itself! Not sure about your wireless dongle - I can't find many support pages for Alfa networks. I'd still maintain that a wired connection would be more reliable though. Running it under the carpet should be fine. Alternatively, as I suggested before, these HomePlugs are generally pretty good too. It *is* another item that could possibly fail, but I would trust these more than most wireless setups for a solid connection.

Well i bought it because it was a deal on here.
It has a few issues which i need to look into, just dont think its as secure as it could be as yet.
Got WPA2 on it with long key, plus ethernet and wireless MAC Filtering but not sure about the hardware firewall part of it.

Alfa networks stuff is used be alot of hackers/network pen testers, got excellent range, detachable attenanas etc, so ive got a panel and a 5dBi omni directional ariel for it. Can pick up 50 AP's when its on the window ledge.
I say its a 'dongle' but its a usb wire going into the device which has a detachable ariel.

Got my 4 from Amazon this morning less than 24hr after ordering.

They work fine will the 200mbps zyxel ones I am replacing plus a generic cheapo 200mbps plug from ebuyer.

I am getting rid of the zyxel ones as pointed out they burn out pretty quickly and are becomming unreliable.

I am currently getting 193, 152, 116 & 112 mbps out of the 4 received....Considering thats through 2 consumer units and several floors with long runs of wiring thats pretty good I would say.

The Zyxel ones I have replaced were only giving 70mbps - 90mbps respectively and were meant to be 200 mbps plugs....A couple of them were a few years old and the other 2 were malfunctioning and would drop off after an hour or so use.

So these seem to be a big iimprovement. They are also much smaller than the other plugs and have the power saving functionality that has been discussed so should hopefully last longer.

They also have good compatability with other homeplug standard 200mbps plugs.

I would turn off dhcp on the router and manually asign ip addreses to everyone. Also don't make the gateway *.*.*.1 ! Also use a subnet. Don't broadcast the wireless network name, hopefully you have changed it from it's default name.
But I'm curious as to why you can't make these adapters work. The usual reason is that your house in on seperate phases of the electrical suppy, but this is usually in a very big house. (They won't work between phases)

Is there anyone watching in case I have a question?

Well as expected its a total technological 'up.

Put both boxes side by side on a gang plug. Held button in for 6 seconds on box A. Then to box B held in for 7 seconds. Moved one box downstairs and connected to xbox with the ethernet cable. Connected upstairs box to the router.

Because I didn't know how to make it a private network I renamed the network "oneuponedown" and chose "set all devices" only to get a message "some devices could not be added to the network". The message before submitting "set all devices" says something about having changed passwords but I've not changed any passwords.

The xbox downstairs cannot connect to the internet.

Both boxes show the same lights...power on
ethernet port is linked (don't know what to)
but the middle light 'powerline led' is out, which means its not connected to the powerline network whatever that is.

on the main tab unsurprisingly I get some techno BS where it says something is connected to a homeplug device but at the same time it says "0 Powerline devices detected".

Don't worry, I did exactly the same the first time around.

The 'Powerline LED' indicates if the two plugs are paired on the same network, so from what you're saying they didn't pair successfully. They need to be on the same network in order to communicate, and so that the plug(s) that are not connected to the router have a path to the internet via the one connected to the router (Effectively one long ethernet cable made up of your internal wiring. If they're not paired, it's the same as someone cutting an ethernet cable in half, there's no connection to the end point)

When you're pairing the plugs:

1. Press and hold the pair button on the first plug for 6-8 seconds (Don't hold for longer otherwise you'll end up resetting the plug, which effectively won't do anything. Normally it would be used to unpair a paired plug from a powerline network) and release, the 'Power LED' should begin flashing on and off.

2. Next, press and hold the pair button on the second plug for 6-8 seconds and release, the 'Power LED' should begin flashing on that plug also.

3. The two plugs are now searching for eachother, as soon as they find eachother the 'Power LED' and the 'Powerline LED' will flash on and off momentarily then become solid. This means the two plugs are now paired on the same 'public' powerline network and recognise eachother (You've just created your long ethernet cable which you can move all over the house)

The 'Ethernet LED' will be on if you've connected an ethernet cable to the plug, regardless of whether it's paired with other plugs. It will flash on and off when data is being sent.

The table below (Put together from the manual) shows what the LED states mean:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6099/6307049379_2484954088.jpg

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before you can set the plugs to a private network, you first need to pair the plugs onto the same 'public' powerline network. Then you need to enter the password for each plug on the "Main" tab of the utility program. The passwords are written on the underside of each plug, and they're individual to that plug.

So the steps to set follow are:

1. Write down the passwords for each plug.
2. Successfully pair all of the plugs together onto the same 'public' powerline network.
3. Connect a PC with the utility program and wincap installed to one of the plugs, and make sure the rest of the plugs are plugged in and turned on.
4. Open up the utility program, wait for the autoscan feature to detect the plugs (Note: It won't detect the plug you're using to connect with, see my edit below)
5. Left click once on one of the plugs when it appears in the window at the bottom.
6. Click the "Enter Password" button, and enter the password including the hyphens (It's case sensitive too)
7. Repeat steps 3 & 4 for the other plug(s)
8. Go to the "Privacy" tab.
9. Enter a name of your choice in the "Private Network Name" box.
10. Click the "Set All Devices" button.

EDiT

Another thing you'll need to do is, when setting the passwords for both plugs, the utility doesn't show the plug you're using to connect to the network in the bottom window, so you can't set the password on that plug. An easy solution is to set the password on the other plug that is showing in the bottom window, then plug in the one you've just set the password on and connect your PC to that, plug in the other plug which you were just using to connect, and then that one should show up in the bottom window of the utility so that you can enter the password for it.

Hello ClubLife, thanks for your help.

Bottom line is I think they are working.

Previously when i paired them I then put one downstairs connected to the xbox and the one upstairs I connected to the router. I still don't think it made it clear in the instructions about this, but I have followed your instructions, to connect one to the pc and then put in the password for the non-directly connected unit and then swap them over and put in the password again for the unit that had been directly connected. The utility seemed to accept everything without flagging any problem.

Why I say I 'think' they are working. I could connect the xbox to xbox live (thats an online thing) but got some error messages (still looking into them) in the connection status screen. I also swapped the xbox for a humax set top box with humax portal installed (thats an online thing too - youtube & bbc iplayer) but I couldn't get the portal to come on I went through a few menus and applied settings in the internet connection menu but no joy. When I put the Humax back in my room it wouldn't come on their either anymore. Crap.

I swapped the xbox for a laptop and did a speed test. I got a longer ping 125 (vs direct wired to router @ 85) but the UL and DL speeds were ok and similar.

I will post this now because I came on Hotuk deals to see if you had replied a few hours ago now and have been messing about with tp-links and the xbox and humax since. I will just try to get the humax running again in my room and continue looking into the xbox error codes.

Thank you for your help. I think it was definately the the swapping over of directly attached tp-link units that made the difference.
Meathotukdeals
4 Nov 11 1 #141
Humax is now ok. Apparently to access the Humax Portal the Humax need to have a working aerial fitted (something to do with getting a time and date in order to launch some software). When I was trying it I didn't have the aerial connected.

Xbox also Ok I think. Read all kinds of ideas. Turned off router etc made no difference. I fell back to putting the xbox direct into router and got the same error codes. So whether they are indeed errors or not they don't seem to be caused by the TP-Links.

So all in all everything seems to be working.

Thanks again ClubLife.

No problemo, always happy to help  Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions or problems.

Regarding the errors on the Xbox, have you forwarded the ports in your router for the games you play etc? I know from personal experience how much of an improvement it makes in gameplay/connection to servers/voice chat when forwarding the ports required for each game/Playstation Network on the PS3. Even with UPNP switched on, some routers just plain fail at doing it automatically.

If not, a great place to start is www.portforward.com. Also searching the game publishers FAQ for the required ports is a good one too.

Hi ClubLife,

I don't actually play online. I was playing a lot of Gears of War 3 and Epic sometimes introduce a new variable if you are connected to Xbox live - even on a free account (silver) and even if you are playing alone. The last one was pumpkin heads on characters but before that it was changing weapons on maps. I do look at Xbox streaming videos and DL demos. While things seem ok for this use I'll leave the router settings alone - my mood dips just thinking about it.

Ahh btw on the QoS Simple Mapping am i right in guessing 'online gaming' biases the throughput for speed but not quantity and 'Audio/Video' biases the throughput for quantity and not speed?
ClubLife to Meathotukdeals
5 Nov 11 #144
Pretty much, yes. It prioritises data, which can effect quality.

Selecting 'Online Gaming' tags each piece of data related to online gaming arriving onto your home network with a 'Fastpass ticket' if you like (Similar to systems used for queue jumping at theme parks), meaning it gets a higher priority than data related to 'Audio/Video' & 'VOIP', so it'll arrive at its end point quicker than the other two. Gamers prefer lower ping times (time it takes for data to travel back and forth between two points, also known as latency) so that if they're playing an online shooter, they see the enemy that millisecond quicker, and can get the first shot in (Although hardware plays a part in this also, but that's irrelevant here :stuck_out_tongue:)

Lag is related to high ping times/latency, which can effect gaming, audio/video & VOIP data. A recent example being the newest battlefield game. The voice communications are extremely choppy, resulting in people not being able to communicate properly, ruining their gaming experience e.g.

Player says: "You only hear bits of what I say"
Team mates hear: "Yo..on...y...hea...r...bits...of...wh..t...I....sa..y"

If you stream a lot of video/audio to that particular computer/device in your house, you'd select 'Audio/Video' on the homeplug connected to the computer/server storing the audio/video, and the homeplug that's connected to the device you'll be streaming the data to e.g. WD TV Live, so that your movie/music doesn't stutter/skip when the network is being used heavily by other users.
Meathotukdeals
5 Nov 11 #145
Thanks ClubLife. Would applying the 'Audio/Video' rules be via the same as initial set up (plug one homeplug direct to pc and setup the more remote plug then swap homeplugs and repeat) or, now they are set up, do I just highlight each plug in the Utility (one in the upper window and one in the lower window) and then go to the QoS tab and apply from there?

LOL I'm sure this will be my last question! :smirk:
ClubLife to Meathotukdeals
5 Nov 11 #146
You need to connect your PC/laptop to the homeplug you wish to change the QoS settings of, run the utility and set the QoS to the desired settings, then you can move that homeplug anywhere in the house.
