An absolute bargain compared to the Bosch Multitool which is around £70

An incredibly versatile tool, allowing the user to saw, scrape, sand and cut with the same piece of equipment.

All accessories attach at different angles to increase the tool's versatility
Cable: 2m, BS Plug
25 piece accessory set includes sanding paper, saw blades, scraper and dust adaptor
No-load speed: 15,000-22,000min-1

I bought one of these yesterday am. I wasn't sure how popular a buy they were likely to be with Joe Soap. Fein are the company who invented it and held the patent(s) until they expired fairly recently. Therefore, Bosch et al are all now jumping on the bandwagon.

Buying electrical goods of any sort these days from any source is a complete minefield whether it be TVs, fridges, computers or power tools because there is so much outsourcing and sub-contracting taking place, as well as OEM. For example, if you are concerned about computer hardware reliability and thus insist in buying, say, Apple, rather than Dell, I can tell you it would be waste of time because all the capacitors on the MBs typically come from the same Far East supplier and component MTBF is just a number on paper.

If you buy a Bosch fridge, why pay more for a Siemens which is just a Bosch 're-badge'? Rumours abound that the Bosch fridges are assembled in Poland and the Siemens ones are made in Germany but if all the components come from the same Far East sources and it is component quality that is the crucial issue what the hell does it matter (much) where the parts are put together, like an Airfix kit? Yeah, tell me all about QA and all that, blah, blah, blah. As for your Braun electric toothbrush, well, that brand is exclusively owned and controlled by GIllette Inc, an American company, so none of your excellent 'German engineering' there. And don't get me started on the Skoda/Seat/VW/Audi (Porsche/Lamborghini/Bugatti) thing. You want to tell me the VW/Audi group is not exploiting the economies of scale from their component suppliers? VWs have a high resale value partly due to the unwarranted myth about their reliability that even the TUV organisation does not recognize. Fine if you just want to buy a VW because you want to get a better second-hand selling price than you would for an equivalent Ford but that might be negated right from the outset by the fact that you will get significantly less discount on your new buy from the VW dealer than you will from the Ford man.

In the end, all you can do is look at your circumstances, look at your bank balance, look at the facts that you know are facts and act rationally in accordance. The rest you will have to put to chance. Personally, I wouldn't EVER buy a Bosch power tool simply because I do not regard them as VFM, that I would be paying seriously over the odds for the snob-appeal of the brand name and the cost of their expensive marketing campaigns and probably the outrageous leverage costs of whatever capital venture fund possibly now owns them. Just pop along to the Argos or Amazon web sites to get a flavour of what some Bosch power tool owners moan about them; at best nothing special.

I happened on this pointless argument because I am right now trying to ascertain what other manufacturers' accessories or third party accessories may fit the tool. I think the Bosch ones may but I will probably not buy any because they are seriously over-priced. However, I may take the Aldi tool over to B&Q and try to assess whether the Bosch accessories they sell (all two of them!) fit. IF I think they do I will try to find what other third party accessories fit the Bosch. As a redundant aside the tool was supplied to Aldi by Batavia GmbH which I expect are just an importer of Far Eastern goods. The support website cited in the accompanying documentation consists of a home page and not much else. MAYBE that is what you are SUPPOSED to be paying the premium price for but there are no guarantees there either, based on my experiences.

With a bit of intuitive 'googling' I was able to find out who the Far Eastern manufacturer is and I am sure if I could be *rsed, a bit more googling would lead me to who else distributes this tool in Europe/UK under THEIR brand-name (Draper? Silverline? Einhell)? which might also lead me to a source for suitable accessories.

On the subject of the Aldi three-year warranties some people are getting confused by your legal rights under the Sale of Goods Act (SoGA), which Trading Standards (TS) et al have an interest in, and warranties. The latter are a private contractual arrangement between Aldi and the customer. Aldi can make the terms of that whatever they want and the customer agrees to that by paying for the goods; offer to chattel, offer to buy, agreement to sell, and all that. TS will only be interested in enforcing the terms of SoGA, not the warranty; you are on your own with that.

Here endth the diatribe.

Stevenage ALDI had sold out but still had lots of the accessory sets at £9.99 - they kindly phoned around to save me a journey and there was one left at Hatfield ALDI yesterday. In the end I bought one at ALDI Biggleswade that had been discounted to £15 in the reduced section. The accessory sets had also been reduced from £9.99 to £5 so even bigger bargains to be had...

Hi I bought one of these tools last week, and was amazed at how easy it is to use and cut butt joints, I have a very large range of tools and this is up there with my Bosch tools, I rate this tool 10/10, its 300 watts almost twice as powerful as a Bosch, even got my wife to cut out a joint in 2x2 perfect fit.
My only small complaint is the two pegs to hold the cutter, they have been set to deep, only salutation is to get a small drill, tap it out and replace it, that's only if it ever slips off, Aldi has sold out of them, I would buy a second one, and also for Christmas presents. Super Tool worth every penny. a must for all DIY men and women. Best tool of the year.

That appears to be the exact opposite of what is needed for this tool, afaik it fits bosch(the same fitting as this aldi) blades to other tools. I've yet to see anything that fits other blades to this aldi, though I'm not sure you would want to as bosch blades are cheaper than other makes.

I think it may have been a loss leader, there was only room for about 8 of these in my local store, by 8:30 half of them had sold.

I don't think thats true about Trading Standards. If a company offers a free extended guarantee its legally binding. Often shops take advantage of consumers who lack understanding of the law. The 3 year guarantees often exclude fair wear and tear so if a power tool is basically worn out within 3 years you get nothing. Guarantee's are abused by less honest members of society for example builders buying DIY grade tools and then making use of guarantees that often exclude professional use. I think powertools are one of the most difficult products to claim on for this reason because of abuse of guarantees.

Bosch are some sort of charitable trust or something where most of the profit is ploughed back into the business but also the original family gets a small slice as does certain charities. Personally I think a lot of Bosch products is great quality and worth the price plus you get backup with accessories and spares.

Lots of uk companies (Draper, Argos, Screwfix, Silverline, Sealey) as well as german companies like lidl and Aldi operate as importers of power tools etc from China into the uk selling much the same items just repackaged slightly for each company.

great tool if you are a floor fitter (makes cutting door frames just above the floor level much easier). I have two of them, first one is fein (very expensive and blades cost a fortune), the second is green (DIY range) bosh (average price and affordable blades) - both do the same job! I will definitely buy this one from aldi , from the pic I presume it takes the same blades as the bosh one.
thanks op, good deal.

From my own personal experience aldi suck with warrantys, when the time comes to take it back if it brakes, the company that suppliers them will be none exsistant!

I baught http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/tevion-dvd-multimedia-micro-system-270559#comments nearly 3 years ago, it broke rougly 5 months ago called the helpline number, the number was dead, called another number being told they would call me back, but no one called, went into the aldi store where i got it and they couldnt care less and they told me to call tevion again, found someone who knew something about it and turned out it went into liquidation and tevion had nothing to do it with. So i wouldnt count aldi's warranty for ****.

I'll defo check this out. I too have the Bosch unit and has been an excellent buy. As others have stated the blades are a bit on the expensive side but there are more manufacturers producing compatible blades now so not such an issue. I recently bought a case from Amazon with compatible blades - not the same quality as the bosch ones and slightly smaller in dimensions but at around £25 for 9 blades was worth a punt.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002SHR3MQ

As far as this deal goes I agree with many previous posts in that generally Aldi tools have been of a good quality. This looks a great wee bit of kit and for the plunge cutting ability alone are worth the purchase.

Nice spot OP.

You were done. Your contract is with Lidl, not with the company. It is up to Lidl to replace/refund. If they want to send it off to some company to be not fixed, that's up to them. Well the Wiki link in post #33 has a Bosch universal adaptor and lists several other brands, but I cannot see the brand name of the Aldi one to judge whether it is truly 'universal'.

OK the brand seems to be WorkZone, and isn't listed on the Bosch 2608000468 packaging, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work on it as I presume Workzone is actually made for Aldi by someone else, and may be one of the other brands listed.

NB It can be had for £5.75 from Fleabay.

it's maybe okay for you to say it's not a bosch but what about all the people out there that can't really afford to spend that money on a bosch one so they then go for this and it has warranty so i would say its worth that money if you were needing/looking for one.
gari189
14 Oct 11 #25
I have the Bosch. If you regularly do DIY these come in very handy for some awkward jobs (eg door trims or plunge cutting skirting in-situ) but the sanding function is very poor compared to orbital sanders. Buy it for the cutting but not for the sanding......

14 Oct 11 #24
This is surely worth the money even if you were to just use it as a cutter, same as a cast cutter. Safe cutting is the way forward. A Fein is over £200 so this must be good value. Aldi stuff is good quality, usually has a no quibble type returns policy and normally comes with a manual that includes re-order details for parts. Nice

I think it oscillates up and down, I too wonder how good this might be, is it meant for scraping paint or wallpaper?

I do like the plunge cutter though, very useful when cutting close to a wall/floor etc.

As for Aldi/Lidl quality, they are fine for the DIY'er, if you want Bosch/Makita etc, go pay those prices and be a professional.

I've never had an issue with their warranties on items (not that I've had many issues, a broken zip and something else which my menory doesn't care to remind me!), either refunded by post or returned to store (after calling CS to find out what they wanted me to do).
Midway
14 Oct 11 #20
The scraper blade and the other tools oscillate from side to side about 1.4 degrees at very high speed 15,000 to 21,000 rpm, so just under 3 degrees, total movement this gives the multi tool the ability to cut sand and scrape etc.

I have the Bosch equivalent, which is a great tool, but I've also bought Aldi tools in the past and they have always been good quality and worked well as well as having the bonus of 3 yr warranty, which you dont get with the big brand names.

I bought a sort of similar tool from either Lidl or Aldi made by Park tools, a electric chisel/scraper and its one of my most used tools. Fantastic value. I doubt this compares to Bosch though. Bosch have their own range of basic chinese quality tools under their Skil brand and I would guess this tool would be at that level.

If you buy a product with a 3 year guarantee in a shop you are entitled to take it back to that shop for the 3 years if it goes wrong. They may try to get you to send it off but they have no right to force you to do so. Clearly if they have instructed you to send it away to some third party who has not repaired and returned the product they are at fault and you would easily win a small claims procedure on that basis against them.
